8:02 pm
counter—terror style powers to give law enforcement much stronger powers to act early in the same way that they could around terrorism cases, because that's a sign of really the seriousness of this. if we are going to strengthen border security and prevent lives being lost, we have to have stronger law enforcement powers to go after the dangerous gangs. >> president donald trump says the cause of last night's washington, dc, crash between a plane and a military helicopter is still being investigated. and he says our hearts are shattered. authorities in washington say they don't expect to find any survivors after the collision over the potomac river. more than 300 emergency responders are searching for survivors. 64 people, including crew, were on the american airlines flight. three soldiers were on board the black hawk helicopter. at least 28 bodies have already been recovered. the helicopter was on a training flight when the crash happened just before 9 pm. local time. >> our hearts are shattered alongside yours. and our prayers are with you now and in the days

8:05 pm
and since labour took power only a few months ago, more than 24,000 illegal migrants have entered the uk across the channel entered the uk across the channel, while more than 151,000 have crossed since the year 2018 to join the estimated 1 million illegal migrants in the country already. and as gb news home and security editor mark white has regularly pointed out on this channel, most illegal migrants aren't even coming via the channel. they're coming through other routes. meanwhile, the labour party wants you to believe today that it has a new plan today. home secretary yvette cooper has issued a new bill that vows to smash the gangs. it contains powers that supposedly expand counter—terror powers to go after the illegal migrants smugglers, the people traffickers. but we already know that this is not going to work. experts at the national crime agency say that the gangs are simply too numerous to defeat. think about the war on drugs. has smashing the gangs ended the
8:06 pm
war on drugs.7 of course it hasn't. as soon as one group is thrown into jail, another quickly emerges to fill its space. focusing only on smashing the gangs is like playing a national game of whack a mole. it simply isn't dealing with the underlying demand that's driving this crisis, and the lack of an active deterrent. much of the labour party smashed the gangs plan is merely a reiteration of what the tories were already doing, including its special unit, the border security command. but the fine print of this bill is illuminating, just not for the reasons that the labour party think the tories policy on asylum was utterly hopeless. we know that. but one thing the conservative party's illegal migration act of 2023 did do was make it unequivocally clear that it was illegal to cross the channel, and that those who did would not have their asylum claims processed. here's the really big and fundamental point that labour
8:07 pm
don't want you to know about tonight, which is that labour is repealing a large part of that legislation. in other words, labouris legislation. in other words, labour is decriminalising illegal migration in this country. the economist thomas sowell once said that immigration laws are the only laws that are ever discussed in terms of how to help people break them, and that is never more true than ever in modern britain. labour are making it legal to enter this country via the channel on small boats. the new term is already being introduced. it's not illegal migration, it's irregular migration. labour's asylum policy may present itself as smashing the gangs, but in reality it's tantamount to laying out the red carpet on the beaches of dover. as ever, let me know your views via gbnews.com/yoursay or reach me on x at goodwin mj. but i'm joined now by doctor krish kandiah, founder of the sanctuary foundation, to give us his views. now, krish, we know
8:08 pm
what the polling is telling us. the vast majority of brits want this crisis to end. they want to control their borders. they don't want the small boats to keep coming. labour decriminalising, illegal migration essentially today, basically overturning the illegal migration act. more people are going to come, more boats are going to come. that's a reality, isn't it. >> matt, it's good to be with you. i think we agree on a lot. matt, i agree with you that we do need strong borders and that we're not really a country if we don't have strong borders. and i see in labour an agreement with you there too. they are trying to increase border security. they're treating the whole criminal gangs as a terrorist, counter—terrorist movement. they are trying to increase the number of crimes that you can be tried for, whether you're trying to facilitate a crossing, whether you're providing a boat, whether you're providing a boat, whether you're providing a boat, whether you're providing anything that's going to help someone to get across, they are going after the right people. i
8:09 pm
think one thing i would say is by they are focusing on the criminal gangs, the people that are exploiting vulnerable people, many of whom many of whom are fleeing war and terror, many of whom are trying to seek asylum. they are punishing the criminals, and they are punishing the traffickers and the smugglers, not those that have been trafficked, not those that have been smuggled. that's that's such a worthwhile approach. the previous government, i feel, was punishing the wrong people. it's like punishing someone 1501 00:0
