5:01 am
ordered ordered politicians in the us to do it, and sadiq khan did it yesterday as well. but now he says it was a technical error. oh, were you hacked by the chinese government, sadiq.7 anyway, he's going to put his pronouns back so we'll be able to tell if sadiq khan is a boy or a girl again soon. and britain has warned that we need an iron dome to protect against attacks from russia. sorry, but i think the people who want to harm us are already in the country and under the dome. i'm leo carson. tonight i'm joined by simon evans and carrie marks to take you through monday's top stories. there they are. look at carrie, looking like the man from del monte. this is headliners. but before tomorrow's news, let's go to tonight's headlines with aaron armstrong.
5:02 am
>> good evening to you. our headlines. the prime minister says the uk will seek a strong trading relationship with the us as north america moves closer to as north america moves closer to a trade war. mr starmer spoke to reporters while hosting the german chancellor, olaf scholz, ahead of a trip to brussels to improve relations with the european union. while sir keir has been urged to pursue a new customs union with the eu. but he also wants to maintain good relations with the us. >> what i want to see is strong trading relations and in the discussions that i've had with president trump, that's what we have centred on in those strong trading relationships. so it's very early days. i've been very clear since i became prime minister that i do want to reset the relationship between the uk and the eu. that does not involve a return to the european union. we had a referendum here on that and that matter is settled. >> meanwhile, donald trump says any potential pain caused by his trade war with canada, mexico
5:03 am
and china will be worth the price. canada and mexico were hit with 25% import taxes on goods, and there's a 10% tax on china. well, china and mexico say they will implement corresponding countermeasures, and canada has already responded with a for tat 25% on us imports. however, the president has defended the move and denies tariffs will be damaging for the united states. >> tariffs don't cause inflation, they cause success and cause big success. so we're going to have great success. there could be some temporary short term disruption and people will understand that. i had that one in negotiated some of the good deals for the farmers. and unfortunately those deals have been led astray by biden and his people because they didn't enforce the deal. but the tariffs are going to make us very rich and very strong, and we're going to treat other countries very fairly. >> tony martin, who was jailed for shooting dead a teenage burglar in 1999, has died at the age of 80. the farmer was
5:04 am
convicted for killing 16 year old fred barras and injuring another man when he fired his shotgun three times towards intruders. he served three years intruders. he served three years in prison for murder before being released when his conviction was reduced to manslaughter on appeal. let's turn to the middle east, where the city of jenin, in the occupied west bank, has been rocked by a series of simultaneous explosions. israel says it destroyed more than 20 buildings during its targeting of what it described as terrorist infrastructure. local authorities, though, say janine's hospital was damaged in the explosions. israel has stepped up its operations in the occupied west bank in recent weeks, since the ceasefire in gaza came into effect , weeks, since the ceasefire in gaza came into effect, and chinese communities across the country have been celebrating lunar new year. thousands of people gathered in central london earlier to watch a traditional lion dance and take
5:05 am
part in the carnival. the lunar new year is a significant cultural celebration. it signifies the end of winter and the arrival of the year of the snake. that's it from me for the moment. more news a little later. >> for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code or go to gbnews.com/alerts. >> hello and welcome to headliners, your first look at monday's top stories with three top comedians. let's have a look at some of monday's front pages. the telegraph has eu warns trump we will not be bullied. oh yes you will. the times has french tell uk to eat humble pie on brexit. well, what they don't know is humble pie is actually a delicacy in britain. the eye has uk iron dome needed to guard
5:06 am
against russian attack. defence review set to warn. so let's have a look at those front pages, starting with the telegraph and the eu on the trade war with trump. >> yes, it's. »- >> yes, it's. >> it's. >> it's. >> the biggest story at. >> the biggest story at. >> the biggest story at. >> the moment. >> the moment. >> it's causing quite. >> it's causing quite. >> a lot. >> a lot. >> of alarm among. >> of alarm among. >> people of a. >> people of a. >> nervous disposition. yeah. >> nervous disposition. yeah. >> i don't know. >> i don't know. >> how seriously to take it. i don't know whether it is still sabre rattling or. i mean, these executive orders are coming in now at a rate of knots. i had thought he might be taking a negotiating position, but it looks as if china and canada and mexico have already been bit by some, some fairly. yeah. >> really surprisingly harsh. so china with 10% and this is, this is any trade with with china, you know, is subject to a 10% tariff when it comes in and canada is 25%. >> 25% and mexico as well. and they do. of course, america is dependent on canada for quite a lot of its oil. so it's not simply a one way, a one way drift of goods and services. their biggest balance of trade surplus is with china. and they,
5:07 am
you know, they have some levelling up to do there, if that's what they want to do. trump has said there may be economic pain to endure as a result, but he's willing to do that in order to usher in a new golden age, which does sound a bit like steal underpants, question mark profit, you know? but still, i think the idea is that at some point the prices will go up because of the tariffs. but of course, if the tax revenues that they get from the tariffs enable them to reduce income tax and sales tax, then that will level things out and the standard of living might not be hurt that badly. but in terms of europe, the eu is the second biggest trade surplus that america has. but the uk is not. the uk actually has one of is probably the only developed economy with which america has pretty much an exact balance of trade, but very slightly. >> they won't be looking to hammer the uk, which is just as. >> well because our economy find out. let's find out what our special agreement with them really is about. >> shall we? >> shall we? >> i thought it might be an advantage that we're not in the eu right now, because if they're
5:08 am
going to if he's going to punish. >> the eu and. >> the eu and. >> we're out of it, then we should be taking advantage of that right now. and working. >> with could single handedly make brexit look like the most genius decision we've ever made? yes, yes. i mean. >> not planned that way, but yes, take advantage of it. canada is almost certainly it's a form of blackmail, isn't it? he wants canada to come in as an extra state to america. so he's laying this down. and the war that's about the tariff war that's about the tariff war that's about the tariff war that's about to start is pretty much what he wants. yeah. i mean, trump likes i think it's very much his way to cause a lot of disruption. he doesn't upset the apple cart. he's messing up the apple cart. he's messing up the whole orchard this time. and the whole orchard this time. and the world is feeling it. and everyone's looking to win it all. make america great again i don't know, but i do know that right now, america, everyone is staring at america to see what's going to happen next. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> the trouble about it. >> the trouble about it. >> so the trouble with this is that, you know, economics, global trade isn't a zero sum game. so if you, you know, if you put tariffs on stuff from canada, it doesn't naturally, you can't naturally assume that you're going to be able to make the same stuff for the same, you know, with the same stuff for the same, you know
