3:07 pm
bought an extra little sachet of mayonnaise. >> yes, a brave fellow, that's for sure. and as long as they've still got the sausage rolls, that's what i need for my jowls. anyway, it's back to martin daubney. he strikes me as a steak bake kind of fella. >> you're absolutely right, mark. steak bake all day long, my son. now, back to the serious business of politics. because the conservative leader, kemi badenoch, says that immigrants should have to wait at least 15 years before they become eligible for british citizenship. as she announced her first major policy since being elected as the conservative leader. and miss badenoch also said that indefinite leave to remain should not be granted to those who have criminal records, who claimed benefits or even social housing. but with 14 years of tory failure to tackle rocketing immigration, why should voters believe a single word that they say? well, i'm now joined in our
3:08 pm
studio by our political correspondent, katherine forster. catherine, welcome to the studio. now, of course, we are shortly crossing live to kemi badenoch chris, who is sitting down with the conservative leader, to grill her on some of these policies, because the one thing that leaps out about this, first of all, they had 14 years to do this and didn't. and secondly, i might have spotted a tiny flaw in this plan. and that is endless amounts of people can still come to the country. it just means that they they will still be able to claim benefits. they'll still be able to claim social housing, but they won't be allowed to be a british citizen for 15 years. but that won't stop the tide, will it? >> well, yes. and we've waited a long time, haven't we, for some policy from the new conservative leader. i remember back when she did her launch speech. feels like a long time ago. the whole speech, there wasn't a hint of any policy. and we've waited and waited, and now we have this. now, there's quite a lot in here. but as you say, the fundamental issue i think many
3:09 pm
people will think is the numbers of people coming into the country in the first place. she of course, no matter that we made mistakes, is closely associated with that. that all happened on the conservatives watch, and i think many people will just think, well, you're not fundamentally addressing that now. okay. saying to get indefinite leave to remain doubung indefinite leave to remain doubling that from 5 to 10 years, making it tougher to get citizenship and making it that you have to be a net contributor, you've got to not have claimed benefits, not have you, social housing. if you've had your kids educated in state school, that will be taken into account . and that might all be account. and that might all be quite popular, i think fairly difficult to administer, but i think as a sort of easy difficult to administer, but i think as
