>> this is headliners. >> but before. >> but before. >> tomorrow's news, let's go to tonight's headlines with sophia wenzler. >> leo. thank you. good evening. these are your headlines from the gp newsroom. jd vance has warned britain and the eu over what he claimed was backsliding, free speech and democracy. addressing the munich security conference, the us vice president suggested there has been a retreat of fundamental values in europe. vance also praised munich's hospitality, despite still reeling from yesterday's car attack that left 30 injured. vance warned that the biggest threat facing the west is not external, but the threat from within. >> threat that i worry the most about vis a vis europe is not russia, it's not china, it's not
11:02 pm
any other external actor. and what i worry about is the threat from within the retreat of europe from some of its most fundamental values, values shared with the united states of america. >> meanwhile, the foreign secretary has said we are some way from a negotiated peace between russia and ukraine. it comes after david lammy met with the us vice president in munich today, where they discussed possibilities of a ukraine peace deal >>i deal >> i was very encouraged in our conversations about ukraine. all of us have this desire to bring this horrendous war to an end. we share the view that there has to be an enduring peace. we recognise that this can't be. minsk 3.0. this has to be a serious negotiated peace. and there was an agreement that zelenskyy and the ukrainians have to be part of that

negotiated elsewhere. >> donald trump confirmed he had spoken with prime minister sir keir starmer yesterday and agreed to meet with him perhaps in the next few weeks. the conversation took place during a meeting with trump's special envoy, mark burnett, at downing street. it comes after the president announced plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on countries that charge vat on us goods, with £300 billion in uk us trade at stake. ministers hope britain could be exempt. and the southport child killers sentence will not be referred to the court of appeal under the unduly lenient sentence scheme. that's according to the attorney general. 18 year old axel rudakubana was jailed for a minimum of 52 years in january after murdering three girls at a taylor swift themed dance class in july of last year. however, the sentence drew criticism from the sentence drew criticism from the families involved in the attack and mps, alongside calls for changes in the law. those

11:05 pm
>> daily mail free. >> speech is in retreat in uk, warns trump's vp. big story. so yeah. >> vance has given this speech. >> vance has given this speech. >> i found it very. >> i found it very. >> uplifting, actually. >> uplifting, actually. >> it's about 20 minutes long. had a great time watching it. probably watch it. >> did you feel like somebody in a communist country must have. >> felt before the. >> felt before the. >> berlin wall came down? >> berlin wall came down? >> yes. well, i mean, i. >>— >> yes. well, i mean, i. >> haven't had that experience. but that's what i think the lived experience would. feel like exactly. >> like that. it's like the cavalry are coming, you know. he was very. >> kind towards the uk. >> kind towards the uk. >> he said lots of nice things about us, but. >> he also. >> he also. >> told us what we're up to. >> told us what we're up to. >> that's not. >> that's not. >> so good. and he made quite a lot of talking about adam smith. >> connor, the. >> connor, the. >> guy. who was arrested. >> guy. who was arrested. >> for praying near an abortion. >> for praying near an abortion. >> clinic. >> clinic. >> which is. kind of. >> which is. kind of. >> a good way to tell. >> a good way to tell. >> a good way to tell. >> a story, say what's happening and then find an example. >> and this guy actually got convicted. so that's. >> and this. >> and this. >> was for he wasn't even. outwardly praying. he was just. silently praying in his head. so he was this was a literal thought crime. >> yeah. and that's interesting because that's sort of seen as quite a niche issue in the uk because people have been
11:06 pm
brainwashed to hate christians and to love abortion, but to vance, because he's a he's a christian and he cares about free speech, that's an important issue. and it does shame us, i think, as a country. he basically came to europe and called them all commies to their face. this is what he did. he repeatedly referenced the cold war. he referenced ugly soviet era words like misinformation and disinformation. he talked about how sweden was poor on that case of the quran being burnt, and they were weak on freedom of speech. he talked about how. romania has cancelled an election, and the former european commissioner has said that a similar thing might happenin that a similar thing might happen in germany, as if it's a good thing he called them out on that. he called the uk out on buffer zones and silent prayer, and he basically just said to him, look, you lot go on about democracy all the time. but you're not democratic. you're not democratic anymore. you're basically bureaucratic authoritarians and you call them out on it. also incompetent ones, because he mentioned that immigration is way out of control. and he said there's nothing more urgent. >> than. >> than. >> mass migration. yeah. >> mass migration. yeah. >> so he. >> so he. >> basically came and said, look, it's a counter—elite in the us. >> it's a confrontation. >> it's a confrontation. >> very literally, of the new sort of new counter—elite in the us, which is silicon valley,
11:07 pm
combined with trump and doge coming over, facing the old progressive elite in europe. this is completely falling apart and saying, you need to sort get your stuff together. >> yeah. when you when he talks about or when european leaders talk about preserving democracy, they're actually being very anti—democratic. they talk about banning the afd, putting firewalls around any party that might want to reduce immigration, when in fact nobody is, j.d. vance pointed out. nobody has gone to the ballot box and voted for mass immigration. and, you know, 24 year old afghan refugees driving cars into crowds of people. nobody voted for that. nobody wants it. that happened like the day before in the city. the jd vance was was speaking in. and it's funny that, you know, we were talking before the show, these these attacks that we can't even call terrorist attacks. they just seem to be by migrants who aren't enjoying themselves or don't particularly feel, you know, feel alienated. you know, people say, oh, axel rudakubana wasn't motivated by
11:08 pm
radical islam. the saudi guy who drove into the christmas market wasn't motivated by radical islam. this guy in munich wasn't motivated by radical islam. as if that's a relief. but no, that's almost worse because it's like it's just anybody. >> it's very nihilistic, isn't it? i was listening to a paul birch, former counter—terrorist policeman, this week in an interview, and he said it just. >> feels nihilistic. yeah. >> feels nihilistic. yeah. >> and he's not. >> and he's not. >> he's not scared of calling. out radical. >> islam or. >> islam or. >> anything like that. >> anything like that. >> but that was his experience. having worked in it, he said. >> it. >> it. >> just feels. >> just feels. >> oh, these. >> oh, these. >> people have nothing. >> people have nothing. >> they don't want to live for anything. >> yeah, it might even. >> yeah, it might even. >> be worse than that. it might even be. >> someone saying, like. >> someone saying, like. >> this guy did. >> this guy did. >> wait, he went to. >> wait, he went to. >> the gym. >> the gym. >> he seemed like a together kind of guy, but. >> his. >> his. >> values are just completely different. >> yeah. >> yeah. >> there's. >> there's. >> just a hatred of the west, so it might even be nihilism. it might just be, you know, this is seen as some sort of boon in, in the cultures. so yeah, 1571 00:08:51,184 --> 00
