appears to be an act of terrorism. pope francis is in good spirits, eating normally and continuing to receive treatment. vatican sources have said today. earlier this morning, the vatican issued a short statement saying the pontiff was resting in hospital and the night went well. the update on his health follow a statement yesterday in which the vatican said the pontiff was in a critical condition and was showing an initial mild kidney problem. the 88 year old has beenin problem. the 88 year old has been in rome's gemelli hospital since the 14th of february and is being treated for double pneumonia and chronic bronchitis. nigel farage has hit out at sir keir starmer, saying labouris out at sir keir starmer, saying labour is getting desperate after the prime minister accused the reform uk leader of perpetuating what he is calling the dangerous right wing politics. in a major speech at a labour conference in glasgow, the prime minister condemned reform's, quote, dangerous policies and criticised mr farage over his party's employment rights and potential

nhs charges. >> a dangerous right wing politics, even here in scotland, that will say they are the ones who can tilt politics towards the interests of working people. they claim to be the party of patriotism, but their fawning over putin. no, they are not the answer for working people in britain. >> a three year old girl who died in a crash involving a tram and a van in manchester has been named. louisa lulu palmisano, from burnley, died following the incident on saturday. she was visiting the city with her parents at the time. greater manchester police have arrested a 36 year old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. he remains in police custody. in other news, three men have been jailed for people smuggling offences following a national crime agency investigation into a group organising small boat crossings from france to the uk. among the trio was birmingham based

pitsuwan jamil, aged 55, who came to the uk from iraq in 2002. jamil acted as a fixer for his clients, brokering spaces on boats with gangs operating in northern france and collecting payments afterwards. nca investigators believe he was likely behind dozens of cross—channel journeys. and germany's conservative christian democrat party have won the country's election. friedrich mertz party finished well ahead of rival parties, but short of the 30% vote share they had expected. the other winner of the night was the alternative for germany party, who were celebrating a record second place result with just over 20%. the cdu leader now begins the arduous task of forming a new coalition government, and those are the latest gb news headlines for now. more news from me in half an hour. >> thank you. tatiana. now the gloves are off because the former labour mp, mike amesbury,
3:07 pm
has been sentenced to ten weeks in prison after admitting to punching a constituent. the custodial sentence handed to the runcorn rocky, sorry, the runcorn rocky, sorry, the runcorn and helsby mp means voters in his constituency can remove him from his seat. now with a recall petition now, could this be a major knockout blow for prime minister sir keir starmer and indeed an opportunity for the gloves to come off and to get one straight on the chin for nigel farage's reform party. many, many more boxing puns will follow, i guarantee you. now we can speak with gb news political editor chris hope. i'm also delighted to say i'm joined in the studio by the political editor at the independent, david maddox. dave, great to see you've been waiting too long, my friend. but, chris, let's start with you. we expected this to go to court. obviously we expected, i think, a custodial sentence. we may find that mike amesbury appeals. we may find he doesn't go to prison. but certainly an astonishing statement from the labour party came out. will
3:08 pm
there be a by—election.7 well, there be a by—election.7 well, there doesn't necessarily have to be. of course, he's now former labour and it seems the labour party want to wash their hands. and it looks like we might have a by—election. >> yes. it's not in the labour party's hands. it's in mike amesbury's hands. if he appeals against the ten weeks in prison he's been given by for pleading for guilty on one count of assault back in january, last month, in january. he then if he appeals and wins the appeal, there won't be a by—election. he can carry on being an independent mp until the next election, but if he doesn't appeal or if he loses the appeal and he does serve some time inside, there will be a recall by petition. if 10% of voters in this seat of runcorn and helsby want a by—election, there will be one probably, i would say around may time. i'm guessing the local elections could have the local elections could have the same. looking at the timescale about then we have this whole period takes six weeks to run a recall election. kwasi could stand down, quit as an mp. we don't know what he's going to say yet. we're waiting to hear what he wants to say.
3:09 pm
yet he admitted the charge back on the 16th of january. to remind viewers and listeners it was back in october 2024 that labour suspended him. and when he punched a man in cheshire and reportedly said you won't threaten the mp ever again, will you? threaten the mp ever again, will you.7 apparently, threaten the mp ever again, will you? apparently, seeing the footage now of it happening, there we are again. we can't hear the footage on that, i think with some some shouting. but that was happening there. it was a row, i think, over a local road or a local bridge 1528 0
