9:02 pm

it's ten weeks. all you get for battering a constituent. next. >> patrick. thank you. the top stories. nigel farage hit back at the prime minister today after sir keir starmer accused the reform uk leader of the party's, quote, dangerous politics. addressing members in cornwall this evening, mr farage addressed antifa activists who attempted to disrupt the event and he also said free speech will prevail. >> let me give a message to antifa. let me give a message to two tier. keir starmer. let me give a message to all of them. we will not be cowed. we will not be silenced by anybody. we are the british people and we want a common sense government back in charge of our country. we are going to fight for it and we are going to win.
9:05 pm
>> us president donald trump says the focus is on having a ceasefire in the ukraine war as soon as possible. mr trump made those comments in a speech at the white house alongside the french president. he also said the us has had some great conversations with russia since he took office on the 20th of january towards that goal, and that europe should contribute to securing peace. the french president, emmanuel macron, who was welcomed to the white house today, said in the speech we have a shared desire to build peace. the us president says it's to the benefit of russia to make a deal. >> our focus is on achieving a ceasefire as soon as possible and ultimately a permanent peace. my meeting with president macron today was another important step forward in that. i believe that emmanuel agrees with me on many of the most important issues. chief among them is this is the right time. it may be the only time. you know, that's a very interesting and horrible situation and that
9:06 pm
could evolve into a third world war. we're not going to let that happen. >> and finally, former labour mp mike amesbury has been jailed for ten weeks after he admitted punching a man to the ground in his cheshire constituency last october. amesbury pleaded guilty to assaulting 45 year old paul fellows after video footage emerged showing the confrontation. delivering the sentence today, the magistrate said amesbury's unprovoked drunken behaviour was too serious to be dealt with by unpaid work. those are the latest headlines. for now, it's over to patrick. >> for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code or go to gbnews.com/advent. >> it is ten weeks in prison. all you get if you're a labour mp who batters one of your
9:07 pm
constituents in a drunken late night attack. >> stop it, stop it! stop! whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa. hey hey hey hey. >> mike amesbury, who is no longer the labour mp but was at the time even admitted to being the time even admitted to being the mp during the assault. >> yes, i am. yes i am. and you won't threaten the mp ever again, will you? oh, is it mike? yes. are you the local mp, john? the mp7 yes. are you the local mp, john? the mp? the yes. are you the local mp, john? the mp7 the mp yes. are you the local mp, john? the mp? the mp of runcorn? that's what you should be doing round here. he's the local mp, john. >> so, ten weeks in prison, £200 compensation to the victim, £85 court costs and a £154 surcharge in the last few minutes. it's just come to my attention that apparently mike amesbury is going to continue to receive his mp salary whilst he's in prison. so there we are. that's something, isn't it? in reality, it'll probably be back out
9:08 pm
prowling the streets of runcorn within just five weeks or so. but let's have a little look at the judge, shall we? it's tank cram now. mr cram sent a police officer to prison for 20 weeks for making a racist joke in a whatsapp group and then appeared to brag about it, saying, reportedly, this was a police officer bringing the police service into disrepute. so i gave him a long prison sentence. the police were horrified by that. it's the same judge that let the two women who attended a pro—palestine protest with pictures of the hamas paragliders walk free. he said emotions were very high and their lessons had been well learned. shall we compare this to lucy connolly? shall we? she's the wife of a tory councillor who was jailed for 31 months for a social media post, which she actually deleted, calling for mass deportations and saying that migrant hostels should be set on fire. now, obviously the bit about migrant hotels is awful and she should not have said that. but she
9:09 pm
deleted the post. she did plead guilty and she still got 31 months. now i ask you what's worse? battering a constituent or a social media post? now i put it to you that then labour mp mike amesbury. what he did was much worse. mike amesbury has still not resigned as the local mp. and as i just told you, it looks as though you are still going to be paying his salary even when he's in. nick it's ridiculous, isn't it? at the general election, the runcorn rocky and mike amesbury came first with 52.9% of the vote. the man who came second is reform uk's jason moorcroft , reform uk's jason moorcroft, with 18.1% of the vote. since then, we've seen the labour party embroiled in lord alli donor scandal. cabinet ministers accused of lying on their cv. everyone's energy bills are going up again tomorrow, by the way. they'll go up again. starmer's reaction to the
9:10 pm
southport massacre. more migrant hotels. the economy is in a mess. i could go on. so if there's a by—election, could reform win? well, i'm very pleased to be joined now by reform's candidate at the last election. it is jason moorcroft. mr moorcroft, thank you very much for joining mr moorcroft, thank you very much forjoining us this much for joining us this evening. great to have you on the show. i suppose the first question is, are you going to be standing at this by—election then? >> there's no there's been no decision made yet. so and then the actual election has not been called either. so we're just wait and see. >> would you want to though? >> would you want to though? >> of course. yeah. it's i'm very passionate about the area of runcorn, helsby, frodsham and nothing nothing would be greater. but it's up to the powers that 1
