3:00 am
for free speech? i*ve got a shocking development for you relating to non—crime hate incidents are my panel tonight is the associate editor at the daily express, sam lister, landlord and activist adam brooks, and the historian and broadcaster doctor tessa dunlop. 0h, broadcaster doctor tessa dunlop. oh, and in some lighter news, what's going on at this pub? >> you've been feeling salty >> you*ve been feeling salty about our village pub closing down. >> we might be a lulu, but we*re trying to save our pub from being knocked down. along with its rich 400 year history. >> get ready britain, here we go. has keir starmer put diane abbott in charge of the numbers next? >> good evening. it's just gone. 9:00 i*m sophia wenzler with your headlines from the bbc newsroom. donald trump has
3:01 am
confirmed president zelenskyy will visit him on friday to sign a very big agreement. the us president held his first cabinet meeting at the white house since his inauguration last month, joined by his billionaire adviser elon musk. attention quickly turned to the minerals deal with ukraine. >> president zelenskyy is going to be coming on friday. that's now confirmed, and we*re going to be signing an agreement, which will be a very big agreement. and i want to thank howard and scott for the job you guys did in putting it together. really did an amazing job. and that will be on rare earth and other things, i think that. >> he went on to say the united states would not be making security guarantees for ukraine in its deal to end the war with russia, but that europe would. meanwhile, downing street has confirmed that president zelenskyy will meet with sir keir starmer and other european leaders in london on sunday. it is thought that mr zelenskyy is planning to make the trip to
3:02 am
discuss defence. elsewhere, sir keir starmer has refused to say if the deal to give away the chagos islands to mauritius would be funded by the increase in defence spending. the prime minister told the commons that the increase to 2.5% of gdp is for our capability on defence and security in europe, and described the deal being negotiated with mauritius as extremely important for our security. tory mp kieran mullan asked sir keir during prime minister*s questions to give an unequivocal answer on where the money would come from, but the prime minister declined to say where the money for a deal would come out of the increase in defence spending. meanwhile, reform uk leader nigel farage has been in the commons voting on the chagos islands deal motion and has sparked outrage by suggesting we sell it to america. >> would rather see america have the sovereignty of the chagos islands that are corrupt, that are corrupt. mauritius, why
3:03 am
don't we, if we're if we're going to give this up, let's sell, let*s sell. let's get sell, let's sell. let's get a few billion quid for the mauritius islands, for the chagos islands. mauritius has no legal basis, no legal claim. and you know what investment would come that chagossians could go back and get well—paid jobs. i want us to keep sovereignty. but if you*re prepared to give away this country's interests, sell it to america. don't give it away to corrupt mauritius. >> and gary lineker has joined calls for a return of the axed bbc documentary starring a hamas chief*s son. the match of the chief's son. the match of the day host condemned the bbc for bowing to censorship after the broadcaster pulled a documentary accused of blindly spouting hamas propaganda. the presenter, who is due to step down from his high profile role in may, was one of 500 industry figures backing gaza how to survive a war zone and calling for it to
3:04 am
be reinstated on iplayer. the open letter, published by artists for palestine uk, criticised what the signatories said was a racist and dehumanising campaign targeting the documentary. the bbc's board is expected to discuss the film tomorrow. those are the latest gb news headlines. now it's back to patrick. >> for the very latest gb news direct to your smartphone, sign up direct to your smartphone, sign up to news alerts by scanning the qr code, or go to gbnews.com/advent. >> jay review. >> jay review. >> welcome along. has the prime minister fudged the numbers on defence spending? and is he about to bankrupt britain to comply with his beloved international law? so yesterday sir keir starmer said this. >> i can announce this government will begin the biggest sustained increase in defence spending since the end of the cold war. naama. we will
3:05 am
deliver our commitment to spend 2.5% of gdp on defence, but we will bring it forward so that we reach that level in 2027. that means we will cut our spending on development assistance. >> but today that has started to unravel. >> shapps budget. can he confirm to the house that none of the defence uplift includes payments for his chagos deal? yes. >> prime minister. >> prime minister. >> mr speaker, the additional spendl >> mr speaker, the additional spend i announced yesterday is for our capability on defence and security in europe. as i made absolutely clear yesterday. the chagos deal is extremely important for our security, for u5 important for our security, for us security. the us are rightly looking at it when it is finalised. i will put it before the house with the costings. the figures being bandied around are absolutely on the mark. >> yeah, he is not ruling it out is he? he promised £13 billion
3:06 am
more for defence, but that works out at £6 billion in real terms. and now he won't deny that he*ll use the money he's planning on sending to mauritius to surrender the chagos islands as part of that so—called defence spending. in simple terms, instead of paying just for soldiers, tanks and missiles, he might spend that money handing chagos over to the chinese, which will make us less safe. and it would also seem to contradict what his deputy, angela rayner, is saying here. >> no one could have predicted the situation we are in in europe at the moment. and of course, it was absolutely right that the prime minister said that the prime minister said that we had to increase defence spending because the number one responsibility of any government is to keep people safe. it is devastating that we have had to reduce the overseas aid budget. >> yeah. 50 using the defence >> yeah. so using the defence budget to surrender our sovereign territory is not really keeping us safe, is it? deputy prime minister but if keir starmer does that, then that's absolutely shocking. and
3:07 am
many might regard that as his biggest betrayal yet. but the prime minister now faces a huge problem here because this judge, who is a jamaican man called patnck who is a jamaican man called patrick robinson, ruled against britain over chagos. now it seems as though britain is giving up the chagos islands because of a ruling by a panel ofjudges because of a ruling by a panel of judges that included him. ofjudges that included him. okay, well, this is the same bloke who thinks that britain should pay £18 trillion in slavery reparations. in a report he co—authored, the judge claimed that once a state has committed a wrongful act, it should be obliged to pay reparations. the report set out payment plans for the countries involved, but left it up to governments to negotiate what sums are paid. so apparently the prime minister is taking instructions from a man who thinks we owe £18 trillion in slavery reparations. why? so, will keir starmer spend our defence budget surrendering our sovereign territory? and will he choose the ruling of a reparations obsessed judge over britain's national interest? of britain*s national interest? of course, this whole thing could be completely pointless because
3:08 am
the foreign secretary, david lammy, has tonight said that president trump could essentially just veto the whole thing. on a military level and an intelligence level. we're very intertwined with the united states. we struck a deal after striking that deal. there was a change of government in mauritius, and the new government in mauritius had to have time to look at the deal. and there has been a change of government here in the united states. and the united states administration have had time to look at the deal. i still believe it's the best deal. does president. >> trump have a veto? >> trump have a veto? >> well, if president trump doesn't like the deal, the deal will not go forward, right? >> okay then. well, that might be that then. okay. so what's been the point of all this? right. on my panel tonight, we have got the associate editor at the daily express, sam lister, businessman and activist adam brooks, and historian and broadcaster doctor tessa dunlop. thank you very much, everyone. great to have you all on the show. sam, i'll start with you. and so do you think keir starmer has been fudging the numbers on this defence deal? >> yeah, he's clearly been playing games hasn't he? i think
3:09 am
what's interesting is he says the numbers are wild. on how much we are going to give to the chagos islands, to mauritius, to take in the chagos islands off our hands. but then he won't say what the figures our hands. but then he won
