mean, i think it's fair to >> i mean, i think it's fairto say it's gone really as well as it could, could have gone. it'd be lovely to have heard trump actually say we were definitely going to get that trade deal. but the, the, the mood music, the body language has been very, very positive. and let's let's face it, i mean, this is a very big brexit dividend because it*s big brexit dividend because it's he's able to carve us out. he's got a big soft spot for us anyway. but he's able to do that deal with us in a way which he can't do with the eu. and you know that that is extremely. there were two things i wanted to see from today. one was the trade deal and we*re on our way. trade deal and we're on our way. and two was to see them working together to secure that peace in ukraine. and we haven't quite got there with that, but we the mood music is positive and i think that's very important. >> yeah. sean your views i mean there are a couple of quite funny moments for me. we are going to be doing a bit of a blow by blow later on. some fantastic clips are coming out. you know, donald trump there

initially complimenting keir starmer on his suit, which i think was a not so thinly veiled dig at the lord alli scandal, also referencing churchill saying it*s great that the bust saying it's great that the bust of churchill is behind me here. starmer, then the brass neck on the guy coming out and saying, oh, it's so nice to see churchill in his rightful spot. starmer removed the churchill portraits from parliament when he came in, but in the round it was a very cordial, very matey, chummy meeting. >> there's a few things to be said. firstly, those little digs show you just how much attention they are paying to britain. and months ago, on your on your sofa, i said i thought it was a liberty that the labour party went to america and campaigned against trump, but they shouldn't be campaigning against shouldn*t be campaigning against any, any national leader anywhere. and he has been very statesmanlike. people like to denigrate trump and treat him like he he's a child and he's petulant. and look, there's been moments. but today he behaved very, very well because these are people who campaigned against him and he didn't hold it against them. and i think that's important as well. and if we switch on to the trade deal, this is a brexit dividend. because let's be very clear, one of the big points of contention is the car industry, of which we
12:02 am
have little to none. and if we were in europe, we would be now having to face that lumpy situation because lots of european cars go to the states with low tariffs. but when cars come this way, they get very high tariffs. and trump's had high tariffs. and trump*s had enough. he's not he's going to deal with that. and it means that we can deal in a very different arena because most of our trade with them is services etc, etc. and i think that's very, very important. the last thing to say is as well, trump sort of embarrassed all of the european leaders because the thing he did, he tried to end the ukraine war. now, you may not agree with his tactics, but for all of the activity, none of the european leaders tried to end the war. and trump doing that sent a message that, yes, you may not like me, yes, you have disrespected me, but i am now doing yourjobs. and have disrespected me, but i am now doing your jobs. and for those i think keir starmer has done very well today, i will say that he*s done very, very well. he's marching us back into the he*s marching us back into the middle of the conversation. >> yeah, absolutely. well, look, we've got a huge amount of clips to go to very, very shortly. but matthew, i*ll put it to you. the left have changed their tune on

a trump state visit, haven't they? there you are. keir starmer, the man who used to want to abolish the monarchy, by the way, handing trump a piece of paper from the king, saying, please come on over to britain for an unprecedented second trip. david lammy was with him, david lammy on record saying he'd take to the streets if trump ever came again, quoted as calling him a neo nazi sympathising womaniser or whatever it was, sitting there in the in the room with him. so, so what's going on? do labour does not have any principles? >> no. i mean, you know, clearly, you know, david lammy perhaps could have chosen his words a bit better in opposition, but he was very firmly in opposition there. pretty old comments from the first time. the first first trumps first time around. i don*t think he has ever said don't think he has ever said that he shouldn't come for a second state visit. he is the president of our. >> wouldn't have him round for dinner. >> well, the king is going to have that pleasure rather than sir keir. and you get you get rather better catering at buckingham palace or windsor castle than you do at number 10. so look, i think that he*s so look, i think that he's played a blinder today, as i think lord mandelson did

yesterday. the reception, which got things off to a very good start, where he gave perhaps his most relaxed speech that i've ever heard him give. so i hope that peter had a hand in that. so i think i think that, you know, he's he's walked know, he*s he's walked a tightrope really, really well because he was a great answer he gave there when he was somebody. one of the journalists asked him about his views on putin, and he said, my views are well known. well, that's, you know, cause he doesn't wanna embarrass the president. so i think he*s shown president. so i think he's shown that he can shine on the international stage today. >> i*ve got to say, though, the >> i've got to say, though, the tightrope that keir*s had to walk was of his own making. and that's why i think keir needs to go back to the labour party and say, actually, these childish, petulant outbursts are not useful. they put us on the back foot and at some point, opposition or not, particularly if you*re working to be the government, your behaviour is what we have to take abroad to, to get the best deal for the country. because let's be clear, country. because let*s be clear, donald trump, just on a personal level, could have conducted himself very differently. if he behaved how they behaved, we'd behaved how they behaved, we'd be in a very different world. i think people need to. >> just just remind ourselves of what trump said in relation to the churchill bust. i think we
12:05 am
can play that for you now. >> i*m pleased to say that the >> i'm pleased to say that the bust of one of the prime minister*s greatest predecessors, winston churchill, is now back in the rightful place in the oval office, and we're very proud of it. our meeting today and the various breakout sessions we had were tremendously productive. >> it was a subtle dig there at keir starmer. and the fact that, you know, trump's making a big deal about the churchill bust is there. starmer then has to come back and go. it's great to see great to see our mate winston there. in reality some has removed those portraits from parliament. >> oh, absolutely. every time trump makes a little dig, he*s asserting his dominance, isn*t asserting his dominance, isn't he? she*s exactly, exactly the way he is. and i thought it was very, very interesting when he first greeted starmer, he's completely relaxed. of course, he's in his own country. starmer looks really nervous. come on, he says, let's have a photo,
12:06 am
puts his thumbs up. and starmer just sort of stands there looking really stiff. so you know. >> i think it's haunted by the theresa may moment isn*t he. theresa may moment isn't he. when, when, when outrageously i*m defending theresa here. so don't worry. trump behaved very don*t worry. trump behaved very badly with theresa may and putting his kind of, you know, arm or whatever. he did his arm around in an inappropriate way. and taking her hand. >> yeah, i don't i don't really think that starmer has completely shone. i think i think trump has behaved exceptionally well. and i was really surprised to hear trump saying that he would back starmer's appalling chagos. >> well, just on that. so there is there is more to that than meets the eye. and just in the next section, i'm going to play you a clip on this because this is this is quite important. trump didn't wholeheartedly back it. he basically said we need to see more of the detail. essentially, he didn't sit next to starmer, having basically just welcomed him into the white house in front of the world*s house in front of the world's press and then, you know, decide to absolutely shred the chagos dealin
