>> sir keir starmer arrived back in the uk this morning satisfied with a successful trip to washington. it started with some uncertainty with his team and he limiting what they said to avoid saying anything which should offend the notoriously thin skinned donald trump. but the offer of a second state visit to the uk for the us leader was almost certainly oiled. the wheels between the uk and the us, and it's got better on us, and it*s got better on thursday night, with the us president offering a trade deal pretty quickly with the uk, and that could offset the threat of tariffs, with 25% tariffs set to be imposed on eu car makers. but the big question remains over ukraine and the peace in ukraine. i now must turn to the visit here, to washington, to the white house of president zelenskyy today, friday morning. then he should be signing a minerals deal. but what else will be agreed? donald trump, he tells us he wants to try and return some land under russian control to ukraine. but will

that happen? and then the weekend 18 countries visiting london this weekend for a major visit, trying to work out and agree this peace deal with russia? it seems slowly but russia? it seems, slowly but surely, the bloodshed of the three year war in ukraine is ending. but on what terms. >> now did you know that president trump had a real shining to christopher hope yesterday? yeah. and he said, you look like a lovely face. i asked a very difficult question, but you've got a very lovely but you've got a vew lovely smiley face. yes. >> well, there you go. >> well, there you go. >> a special moment there between gb news and president trump in the oval office. anyway, that's the thoughts of political editor at the spectator. katy balls joins us now in the studio. good to see you, katy. it seems that this meeting between starmer and trump was a success. yes. and i think in a way it's perhaps the most positive front page, as keir starmer has had for a long time, maybe since the election, just in the sense that i think we all knew and it was pretty well covered some of the potential pitfalls and problems
6:10 am
when it comes to the labour government and donald trump. and there have been things that have not been plain sailing. if you think about the labour staffers volunteering to campaign for the democrats during the election, you had a practicising, peter mandelson, when he was appointed as us ambassador. so these things have existed. yet on this trip, you saw the love bombing of keir starmer and christopher hope, of course, by the us president. and it also went further than just niceties. there was also some substance that would be very encouraging to number 10, which isn't just to number 10, which isn'tjust the rhetoric of a potential trade deal and tariffs. i think the chagos islands issue is actually one of the most surprising and interesting things to come out of it, which is you've had nigel farage saying the republicans will not go along with this deal about ceding go along with
