6:05 am
your lunch. >> give it another 20 years, then you'll be really in the money. >> yeah. oh, there you go. there's a thought. yeah. anyway, that's the breaking news for you this morning. and the actual news is that the coastguard has called off the search for a missing crew member after a ship carrying toxic chemicals collided with a us military jet fuel tanker. >> while the crash took place on the north sea off the coast of east yorkshire. with emergency services rescuing 36 crew members. >> well, so far, investigators haven't ruled out foul play following multiple explosions yesterday morning. >> well, we're joined now by a principal at south shields marine school, simon ashton. good to see you this morning, simon. and the biggest question on everyone's lips is how can this possibly happen? >> well, i think that's for the that's what the investigation is going to find out. i mean, what we do are dealing with two very modern ships here. and the rules there are specific rules about how vessels conduct themselves in terms of collision avoidance
6:06 am
when they're at sea. and both vessels are required to keep a proper lookout at all times. so what's happened here? the investigators will find out and hopefully soon will come to come to a conclusion on that. >> but but i mean, forgive me, but the jet fuel tanker would appear to have been at anchor. >> that's that's that's correct. and i think the on the face of it, it looks like the other vessel could be entirely to blame for this, but it's never usually that that straightforward. obviously with the vessels on fire at the moment it's very, very difficult for anybody to get on board. but once they do get on board, they'll be able to recover the voyage data recorders, which are very similar to an aircraft's black box, and they'll be able to determine what each vessel was doing. from what i also understand is that it was restricted visibility at the time. you know, there was a lot of fog around. so the bridges on both ships or the immaculate would have had an anchor watch.
6:07 am
and on the salon the bridges would have, should have been manned greater, basically because of the restricted visibility. so the master would, may well have been on the bridge, or there might be an additional lookout on the bridge simply because of the fact you couldn't you can't see anything. >> what do you know? what do we know about these two vessels and what they were carrying? >> well, the sinner immaculate was was, as you said, was an oil tanker carrying jet a—1 fuel very similar to kerosene. and the name itself is used. it's used in aircraft fuels for the container vessel. it could be a number of things, but i understand from the reports that it was carrying 15 containers of sodium cyanide. and i suppose obviously it's quite worrying when you hear the names, the word cyanide in any in any conversation. so there'll be measures taken place by the authorities to make, to protect the people who are who are fighting the fire, who are fighting, who are trying to
6:08 am
prevent the pollution as well. but there will be also emergency response procedures that will be put in place for the cargo that they're carrying. the international maritime dangerous goods code will stipulate the hazards, the dangers and how any potential leak or pollution incidents should be responded to. >> what impact is it likely to have on the coastline? ten miles out? >> well, at this point, at this point in time, it's very, very difficult to say. and i'm not a i'm not an oceanographer, unfortunately. but obviously there'll be the risk of, of pollution washing up on the beaches. obviously we're coming up to easter and if the weather is good, you could end up with oil, you could end up with lots of people going to the beaches and oil on the beaches. but at this stage, i really couldn't say what the what the impact of that would be. we all are aware of what happened with the exxon valdez over in alaska, but obviously that was heavy oil. this is a lighter fraction, so it should evaporate a little bit more quickly than that. so but even so, any oil more quickly than that.
