start off with breaking news. two monorails collided at disney magic kingdom killing one of the drivers. this video just into hln. no other injuries have been reported to sar. a half dozen passengers were reported on the monorail at the time. disney public relations say they will release more information later this morning. we'll bring it to you. it was a special july 4th at the statute of liberty. lady liberty's crown reopened to the public for the first time since the september 11th attacks. the day was wrapped in patriotism, of course, but it also inspired this. this man is proposing to his girlfriend. >> just being able to go in the crown is amazing, being the first group made it especially and being able to propose on such a unique day. >> forth not to have this experience. >> do you have a marriage day yet? july 4th prfr possibly july 4th. >> about 14,500 tickets to the crown have been sold so far.

most of the visits through the end of august. president obama spent his july 4th hosting a party at the white house for military families. now, at that party, the president spoke about iraq's future. last week u.s. combat troops with drew from iraqi cities as part of a security pact. the president said that move is the first step to iraq taking control of its own destiny. because the courage and capability of every single american in iraq, a sovereign and united iraq is taking control of its own destiny. iraq's future now rests in the hands of its own people. as extraordinary an accomplishment as that is, we know it won't be without problems. we know there will be difficult days ahead. that's why we'll remain a strong partner on behalf of the iraqi period on behalf of their prosperity. they took time to celebrate eldest daughter malia's

birthday. she turned 11 on the 4th. the president said when malia was younger, he would tell her the july 4th fireworks were for her. he told the crowd he's not sure she believes that anymore. people across the country use the 4th to stand up against what they consider too much government spending. they call it a tea party, which is the acronym for taxed enough already. they say the president's economic stimulus plan is racking up a huge national debt. they also say his national health initiative is socialism. >> our government has decided that it knows better than the people and the people need to make sure that the government understands they do, indeed, work for us and that we have opinions that need to be heard. >> organizers say rallies in some 1500 cities were planned to take place yesterday. the 4th ended for many with the fireworks display, of course. this was the scene last night in

atlanta, georgia, sight to see. stay with hln as we will have coverage throughout the hour and the morning. not all of the fireworks went off as they should have. just take a look at these pictures from north carolina. two people were killed when this truck here literally blew apart. it was carrying a load of fireworks for a professional july 4th display . three injured, part of the show. investigators looking into what may have caused that explosion. to florida now where the local sheriff said the lightning just came out of nowhere. it hit a crowd of people celebrating the july 4th in lakeland. one man was killed, 18 others were hospitalized. >> we know that there was no rain at the time. there were a few clouds in the area according to the preliminary information we received. but obviously nothing at all

would indicate to them that there was a danger. and as a result, one man died. >> now, whether experts say lightning kills more people in florida than any other state. michael jackson fans trying to win tickets to his memorial will find out today whether they got them or not. organizers say more than 1.6 million people registered for the free tickets online. the winners will get an e-mail after 2:00 p.m. eastern time today telling them where to pick up their tickets. they will be selected in random drawings. jackson's memorial will be held in los angeles on tuesday. the winners will either get to see the event at the staples center or watch a simulcast from the nearby nokia theater. the number of veterans attending this fall could jump by 30%. that's because a revamped gi bill covers full tuition. 60,000 expected to flood

colleges. schools working on ways to help vets make the transition from combat to the classrooms. many offering veterans only classes for students having trouble interacting with people who don't really understand their wartime experiences. some are offering counseling. investigators are trying to track down a suspected serial killer in south carolina whose latest victim has just died. hln's richard lui is in that small town and reports on how the suspect has been terrorizing locals for more than a week. >> reporter: abby tyler, a much loved 15-year-old died saturday morning two days after being shot. the cherokee county sheriff said she is the fifth victim of a serial killer within one week. her pastor remembered abby. >> very vivacios.

she got the faith from her mother, grandparents. she lived that faith for 15 years. a good model for all of us. >> abby was with her father at the family business thursday when she was shot. her father was pronounced dead at the scene. this picture of the family is from her church. the killing began a week ago with the shooting of -- this woman and her daughter found shot. they have released this picture. a while male in his 40s with salt-and-pepper hair. the town is on edge trying to celebrate the holiday weekend under a blanket of fear. taking precautions but also scared, one shop owner and resident told us how his son reacted to the concern of a serial killer. >> he was actually fearful and scared and asked me not to stay up late because he was afraid

that something would happen at the house because of what he hears. it's constantly in the news. people are talking. it's what they have been hearing for the last two days. shall he was fearful. he was scared and he was concerned for my safety. >> when somebody has a firemen at all times up here just for protection. >> do you always work? >> no. just working up here, it stays in my truck, the glove compartment. i do carry it in my car. >> reporter: that's the common reaction in town. as state and federal investigators work to track down the killer. richard lui, cnn, gaffney,, south carolina. nice weather wise. we turn to meteorologist reynolds wolf. you were saying earlier a little cooler today. >> a little cooler and chance of rain in parts of the nation that are really desperate for rain.

in the southeast during the morning hours, intense storms in parts of alabama moving to places like atlanta. certainly desperate for rainfall there. temperatures in the 90s over the past couple of days. today's high for atlanta only going to 80, 74 in washington, 80 memphis. yesterday mid to upper 90s. one of the reasons why we see cooler temperatures is frontal boundary, area of low pressure cruising from west to east. as it interacts moisture for the gulf of mexico, daytime heating, cloud cover, scattered showers, possibly severe thunderstorms. the only place in the nation where we could see storms. front range of the rockies, thunder boomers there. also parts of new mexico back into wyoming, still relatively dry for the west coast. temperatures along the west coast mainly into the 60s and 70s in both locations. 105 in vegas, 110 phoenix, back into dallas 86, 98 in houston and cooler day on tap for austin and san antonio where highs are in the triple digits yesterday. now the latest on your forecast.

a postal worker who defied a bank robber got shot in the face. robert norman at an indianapolis bank when the robber walked in. norman tried to run but found himself face-to-face with the robber. he then tried to grab the gun and the robber shot him. >> god protected me. i could have died. all he did was break some bones and my jaw. the bullet has to stay in my neck. they don't want to take the risk of damaging anything. and i've got a souvenir of this experience. >> even after being shot, norman tried to get the license to the getaway car. police tracked the suspect down after he crashed his car. he is now in custody. the coast guard has rescued a kayaker who has been trying to make a trip around the world. a chopper picked the man up from the coast of alaska yesterday. there is the rescue choerp. the french kayaker called for

rescue after a few days in the rough seas. he became too exhausted to paddle and was treated for hypothermia. he tried to go around the world using only a kayak and a bike. i'm bob cosello with sports. a tragedy rocking the world this weekend. steve mcnair, three-time winner. he was found in a condo shot multiple times including once to the head. the body of a 20-year-old woman whom a source called girl friend nearby. shot once with a gun close by. as to whether it was a murder suicide, they have not ruled out anything but added they are not actively looking for suspects. spent 1 seasons with titans, baltimore raisins. retiring in '07.

consumer reports did a poll of various people who read the magazine and found that overwhelmingly the price is not the price if you'll open your mouth. 83% of the time you'll get a lower deal on a hotel room if after they quote the price you say that much? cell phone? almost as often. when you, when you're given a price quote or rate plan or you're in one, you can negotiate that lower just by asking. nfc, the percent of times people were successful with that? 81%. that's a pretty high number. how about clothing? i never would have thought about this. negotiating on the price of clothing? 81% of the time as well, if you bargain you'll get a better deal. there's product category after product category and service after service if you just ask, you'll get most of the time. i'm clark howard. for more ways for you to save a buck, go to my website,

continuing our holiday weekend from around the u.s. 50,000 runners took part in the peachtree road race in atlanta. it is billed as the largest 10 krace in the country. former president bush spent his july 4th in oklahoma. he spoke in woodward as part of festivities celebrating a local park there. bush joked with the crowd saying he appreciated them giving a retired guy something to do. he also told them what he missed most about his old job. >> i'm often asked what do i miss the most about being president of the united states. well, i can get by with the traffic jams. i sure miss air force one. but i really miss being the commander in chief of such fine men and women. >> the woodward city manager

said it was the first presidential visit to the town since dwight eisenhower who made a brief stop in the 1950s. former secretary of state colin powell says president obama's agenda may be too ambitious and just too expensive. in an interview with john king from our sister network cnn, powell says he worries he's trying to tackle too many big issues at one time and he offered some advice. >> i think one of the challenges president obama has now is that he's got so many things on the table. these are issues that the american people find important. health care and so many other issues. but i think one of the cautions that has to be given to the president, and i've talked to some of his people about this is you can't have so many things on the table thank you can't absorb it all and you can't pay for it all. >> despite his concerns, powell says he has a good relationship with president obama. you can catch more of john king's interview with colin powell today on state of the union.

say they are not actively looking for suspects in the shooting death of former nfl quarterback steve mcnair. boss is here and following the story for us. bob, certainly the tragedy, what's the latest? >> reporter: they haven't ruled out anything, including murder suicide as mcnair's bound was found not far from a 20-year-old woman from a source police called his girlfriend. he was shot multiple times. the woman was found shot once to the head with a gun found nearby. mcnair was 36 years old. more coming up in a bit. breaking news this morning. two monorails collided at disney world's magic kingdom killing one of the drivers. there were as many as six people on the monorail when it crashed. no injuries reported so far. disney plans to release more details later today. we'll, of course, bring that to you. a it was a special july 4th for the statute of liberty.

zelaya is vowing to return today. that could make matters worse for supporters and the people who threw him out of the country. >> reporter: a police chief wants protesters to stay back or risk clashes with riot cops. march organizers try to restrain thousands of working class supporters of ousted leftist president manuel zelaya. we'll die for president zelaya. we've not had a coup for years and we don't want this one now, says this mechanic. pushing and shoving breaks out. protesters are trying to reach the airport and secure a landing site. zelaya is bound to return to honduras this weekend to reclaim his presidency. the interim government ushered in by sunday's coup say it will arrest him. as riot police realize they are

out numbered, the order comes to pull back. before using force we have to negotiate. if we're outnumbered we must talk and try to avoid problems. protesters at this point, security forces are allowing them to go no further. they are trying to keep the terminal building open as long as possible. >> reporter: zelaya's support base is among working class thanks to reforms aimed at reducing poverty. but the business elite and wealthy and middle class, backed by the military, accused him of trying to stage a power grab instead of a socialist state along the lines of his ally, venezuelan president hugo chavez. the new government charged him with treason and in national tv address, catholic archbishop warns zelaya to stay away. >> translator: we think if you take hastey actions, you try to return, it could trigger a bloodbath. please think carefully because afterwards it will be too late,

something to think about. many end up on faraway shores dumped illegally for scavengers to tear apart. a look at how the practice is dangerous for workers and environment. >> reporter: imagine working in conditions like this, cutting apart massive freighters with little or no protective gear, standing in puddles of oil, breathing noxious fumes for a dollar a day. it's a nasty process known as ship recycling. as documented in the film iron eaters, it often takes place on the coast of bengladesh or india, where ships are beached and then left for workers to break down. now action is being taken to try to clean up the process. members of more than 60 countries sign onto an agreement that seeks regulation. getting ships to detail their hazardous waste, pushing for ship recycling to take place at

proper facilities, and looking out for the safety of workers. critics call the new agreement a shipwreck. >> the global response to to th awakening to date and especially this week has been a profound disappointment. >> this attorney and activist says it will do nothing in the near term to stops what's happening on the shores of her maytive bangladesh. >> i was looking forward to an international program that would ensure generators of the waste take responsibility for the management of waste. it doesn't put a ban on beaches which means our beaches will continue to be polluted. >> reporter: but those in the shipping industry say it is a solid start. >> we want to see totally environmentally friendly recycling conducted, done in such a way that the health and safety of the workers is preserved. what the activists fail to understand is the difficult process of putting in place a legislative process that will actually do that. >> reporter: there is common ground though. both sides agree the convention needs to be ratified as soon as

stay with hln as we will have coverage throughout the hour and the morning. not all of the fireworks went off as they should have. just take a look at these pictures from north carolina. two people were killed when this truck here literally blew apart. it was carrying a load of fireworks for a professional fourth of july display. officials say three other people were critically injured. they were all part of a crew setting up for that show. federal investigators are now looking into what may have caused that explosion. to florida now where the local sheriff said the lightning just came out of nowhere. it hit a crowd of people celebrating the fourth of july? lakeland. one man was killed, 18 others were hospitalized. >> we know that there was no rain at the time. there were a few clouds moving in the area according to the preliminary information that we received, but obviously nothing at all would indicate to them that there was a danger.

and as a result, one man died. >> now, whether experts say lightning kills more people in florida than any other state. michael jackson fans trying to win tickets to his memorial will find out today whether they got them or not. organizers say more than 1.6 million people registered for the free tickets online. the winners will get an e-mail after 2:00 p.m. eastern time today telling them where to pick up their tickets. they will be selected in a random drawing. jackson's memorial will be held in los angeles on tuesday. the winners will either get to see the event at the staples center or watch a simulcast from the nearby nokia theater. investigators are trying to track down a suspect serial killer in south carolina whose latest victim has just died. hln's richard luey reports on how the suspect has been terrorizing locals for more than

a week. >> reporter: this much-loved 15-year-old died saturday morning two days after being shot. cherokee county sheriff says she is the fifth victim of a serial killer within one week. her pastor remembers abby. >> very vivacious, very -- a quick smile. she lived her faith every day. she got that faith from her mother, her father, her grandparents. they passed that faith to her. she lived that faith for 15 years. a good model for all of us. >> abby was with her father at the family business thursday when she was shot. her father was pronounced dead at the scene. this picture of the family is from her church. the killings began a week ago with the shooting of peach farmer klein cash at his home on wednesday. the body of a woman and her daughter were found bound and shot. police have issued this sketch -- a white male in his 40s with salt and pepper hair.

the town of gaffney, population 13,000, is on edge trying to celebrate the holiday weekend under a blanket of fear. taking precautions but also scared, one shop owner and resident told us how his son reacted to the concern of a serial killer. >> he was actually fearful and scared and asked me not to stay up late because he was afraid that something would happen at the house because of what he hears. it's constantly in the news. people are talking. it's what they have been hearing for the last two days. so he was fearful. he was scared and he was concerned for my safety. >> when somebody has a firemen at all times up here just for protection. >> do you always wear it? >> no. just working up here, it stays in my truck, the glove compartment or dash. i do carry it in my car. all the time. >> reporter: that's the common reaction in town. dozens of federal, state and local investigators work to track down the killer.

there where temperatures have been in the 90s the past couple of days. but today's high in atlanta today, only 83 degrees. 74 washington, 81 memphis. memphis yesterday was in the mid to upper 90s. one of the reasons why we see cooler temperatures is frontal boundary, area of low pressure cruising from west to east. as it interacts with moisture from the gulf of mexico, daytime heating, cloud cover, scattered showers, possibly severe thunderstorms. front range of the rockies, thunder boomers there. also parts of new mexico back into wyoming, still relatively dry for the west coast. high temperatures today along the west coast that are going to stay mainly into the 60s and seven in both locations. 105 in vegas, 110 phoenix, back into dallas 86, 98 in houston and cooler day on tap for austin and san antonio where highs are in the triple digits yesterday. that is the latest on your forecast. i'm reynolds wolf for hln. a frightened customer made a bank robber angry and the robber wasn't afraid to use his weapon.

three-time pro bowl quarterback who guided the tennessee titans to the super bowl in 2000 is dead. mcnair's body was found on a sofa in a nashville condo yesterday. he was shot multiple times including once to the head. the body of a 20-year-old woman whom a source for authorities called his girlfriend was also found on the floor nearby. she was shot once to the head with a gun close by. as to whether it was a murder suicide, they have not ruled out anything but added they are not actively looking for suspects. mcnair spent 13 seasons in the nfl with the titans and baltimore ravens, retiring after '07. he was co-mvp in '03. steve mcnair dead at the age of 36. it is the men's final at wimbledon today. yesterday another chapter of the williams sister act serena beating venus. in straight sets. venus was asked if it was any easier to take losing to her sister. she said there is no easy to

"we'll die for president zelaya. we'll die for president zelaya. we've not had a coup for years and we don't want this one now," says this mechanic. pushing and shoving breaks out. protestors are trying to reach the airport and secure a landing site. zelaya is bound to return to honduras this weekend to reclaim his presidency. the interim government ushered in by sunday's coup says it will arrest him. as riot police realize they are outnumbered, the order comes to pull back. before using force we have to negotiate. if we're outnumbered we must talk and try to avoid problems. protestors have pushed to this point, which security forces are allowing them to go no further. they are trying to keep the terminal building open as long as possible. >> reporter: zelaya's support base is among working class in honduras thanks to his reforms aimed at reducing poverty. but the business elite and wealthy and middle class, backed by the military, accused him of

well, not all of the fireworks went off as they should have. take a look at theesz pictures from north carolina. two people were killed when this truck here literally blew apart. it was carrying a load of fireworks for a professional fourth of july display. officials say three other people were critically injured. they were all part of a crew setting up for that show. federal investigators are looking into what may have caused that explosion. to florida now where the local sheriff says the lightning just came out of nowhere. it hit a crowd of people celebrating the fourth of july in lakeland. one man was killed, 18 others were hospitalized. >> we know that there was no rain at the time, there were a few clouds moving in the area according to the preliminary information that we received. but obviously nothing at all would indicate to them that there was a danger. and as a result, one man died.

in the headlines this sunday morning, breaking news, one monorail train crashed into the back of another one this morning killing a train driver. that is from officials at disney world in florida. a witness says one family had to be rescued from a damaged train car. it is still unclear what caused the crash. a suspected serial killer in south carolina has claimed his fifth victim. this 15-year-old girl that was shot on thursday died in the hospital yesterday. four other people were shot and killed within a week. now, police have released sketches of the suspect and federal investigators are trying to track him down. mexico wants to arrest more people linked to that deadly day care fire. officials issued arrest warrants for nine people yesterday, 23 other arrest warrants have

two people were killed when this truck here literally blew apart. it was carrying a load of fireworks for a professional fourth of july display. officials say three other people were critically injured. they were all part of a crew setting up for that show. federal investigators are now looking into what may have caused that explosion. to florida now where the local sheriff said the lightning just came out of nowhere. it hit a crowd of people celebrating the fourth of july in lakeland. one man was killed, 18 others were hospitalized. >> we know that there was no rain at the time. there were a few clouds moving in the area according to the preliminary information that we received, but obviously nothing at all would indicate to them that there was a danger. and as a result, one man died.

florida than any other state. michael jackson fans trying to win tickets to his memorial will find out today whether they got them or not. organizers say more than 1.6 million people registered for the free tickets online. the winners will get an e-mail after 2:00 p.m. eastern time today, telling them where to pick up their tickets. they will be selected in a random drawing. jackson's memorial will be held in los angeles on tuesday. the winners will either get to see the event at the staples center or watch a simulcast from the nearby nokia theater. a suspected serial killer in south carolina has claimed his fifth victim. a local coroner says the 15-year-old girl died in the hospital yesterday two days after she was shot. a county sheriff says one man is believed to be behind all five killings. the victims were shot in the small town of gaffney within the last week. now, many people there, of course, ru now terrified.

video shows one monorail smash into the back of a second one. park officials say one of the trains had as many as six people onboard at the time of the crash, but so far no other reports of injury. this morning brooke baldwin with our sister network cnn spoke to a witness who saw it happen. >> there was a complete family on a train coming from even cot, the actual first train, the first car. >> were they getting off easily? did you see ems our emergency crews? were they able to walk away? when we got upstairs, we were there about 10, 15 minutes before the police or fire rescue got on the scene. we got upstairs -- like say, we got upstairs and the doors were open and the family was able to come out. they were shooken up. i guess they didn't know what was going on because you couldn't see forward. and they came out. the kids were crying.
