police make more arrests as they track down the identities of those shadowy figures captured by surveillance figures at the home of a florida couple. judge sonia sotomayor defends and explains past statements. and la toya jackson says she believes her brother was murder. what she told a reporter about how his entourage isolated michael jackson from their family. i hope the day has been good to you so far. i'm christi paul. so good to have your company with us. thanks for sharing. welcome to hln news on this day. we have some breaking news we want to share with you right out of the gate here coming out of the florida panhandle. we have learned that two more people have been arrested in the killings of a gulf coast couple inside their home. now, yesterday police announced the arrest of a fourth suspect,
12:01 pm
gary lamont sumner. police say he's the man on the left in this surveillance video you see here. this was taken at a local store just days before byrd and melanie billings were killed. now, the couple had a growing brood of adopted children. many of them had special needs, as you see in this family picture. police say they were ambushed when two groups of men burst into their home, killing them execution style. ed lavendandera is live from pensacola, florida. so, ed, we have now, what, six suspects in custody overall? >> reporter: it is six total. the latest two arrests that have been made, we don't have a lot of details on that yet, but sheriff's office here in pensacola has scheduled a press conference for i think about an hour away from now where they will announce more details on who those people and what they have been charged with. but what is still unclear at this point is what the motive is behind these murders. surveillance cameras show two groups of men dressed like
12:02 pm
ninjas bursting into the billings' home. two men come from the wooded area behind the house, and three men rush in through the front door. a new minutes later, byrd and melanie billings were shot to death while nine of their adopted children were also inside the house. >> it leads me to believe that this was a very well-planned and methodical operation. >> reporter: monday night, authorities announced the arrest of a fourth suspect, gary lamont sumner was pulled over in a routine traffic stop two counties away. authorities say he's one of the men seen in this picture on the left buying dark clothing in a florida walmart store days before the killings. he's now charged with murder. wayne thomas coldiron and leonard patrick gonzalez jr. have also been charged with murder. according to arrest warrants, patrick gonzalez sr. was the getaway driver in the red van. law enforcement sources tell cnn that coldiron and gonzalez sr. had done odd jobs on the billings property in the past. both men worked as day laborers in the pensacola area. but authorities say they haven't
12:03 pm
positively determined what drove the intruders to murder the billings couple. >> we have identified a motive. a mote sieve robbery. but there are other motes we believe that will develop. >> reporter: the billings' home is filled with surveillance cameras that the family uses to monitor the adopted children throughout the house. federal authorities have been enhancing those video images to learn what happened during the four minutes that five men broke into their home. as for the billings children, we're told that they are being kept in a private location, being cared for by family members and they will continue to do that. christi? >> i wanted to ask you about some other surveillance video. is there any other surveillance video out there that police are kind of combing through right now? >> reporter: well, we asked the sheriff yesterday if it was safe to assume there were other video cameras and other vantage points inside the home that is helping them with this investigation. they said that that is, indeed, happening. we also asked if the murderers themselves were captured on
12:04 pm
video surveillance cameras. the sheriff wouldn't say, if, indeed, that has happened, but federal authorities are going through those tapes, helping authorities here in penls cola enhance those video images. >> ed lavandera, thank you so much. we appreciate the update as always. in less than an hour, as ed mentioned, the sheriff is expected to give more details about the newest arrests in the deaths of byrd and melanie billings. we'll bring that to you live at 1:00 eastern from pensacola, florida, as it happens. meanwhile, let's get to the southwest airlines plane. the company says it's completed immediate inspections on its fleet of 737-300 aircraft. that amounts to nearly 200 planes. well, the inspections were announced after a one-foot by one-foot hole opened up in flight on a southwest jet at 30,000 feet, causing the cabin to lose pressure. can you imagine? the plane carrying 126
12:05 pm
passengers and five crew members from nashville to baltimore had to make an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing and about four rows back you heard this loud rush and your ears popped, and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out. and it was really -- it was crazy. then the oxygen masks dropped, and of course i put mine on as i was instructed, then put them on my kids. so, it was just crazy, though, but especially as a parent you're doing a lot of talking and calming and that kind of thing and how you've never gone through this before. >> immediately, the air bags deployed and started feeling a little lightheaded, and the ears start popping, stopping up, and we immediately began trying to
12:06 pm
put on our masks, trying to adjust them, and the flight attendants went into operation. they did an excellent job. >> now, thankfully, no one was hurt, but a southwest representative says there are no delays nor are there any cancellations due to this incident. just glad everybody's okay. you know, we have this just in. the mastermind behind the largest ponzi scheme ever, bernard madoff, has arrived at a federal prison in butler, north carolina. here's the new video we have, and there he is highlighted. madoff was held overnighted a a medium security prison in atlanta. it's a detention center for prisoners being transferred to other facilities, primarily. now, the atlanta prison once housed charles ponzi, the namesake of financial fraud for which madoff was sentenced to 150 years. madoff's lawyer requests he be locked up near new york so he could be close to his family. that's the latest video we have there. a tough test in day two of
12:07 pm
judge sonia sotomayor's supreme court confirmation hearings. here are live pictures as she's had some intense exchanges with particularly senator jeff sessions. he's the senate judiciary committee top republican. well, the judge repeatedly vigorously defended a 2001 speech where she suggested that a wise latina would more often than not reach better conclusions than a white man without similar life experiences. >> i was trying to inspire them to believe that their life experiences would enrich the legal system because different life experiences and backgrounds always do. i don't think that there is a quarrel with that in our society. i was also trying to inspire them to believe that they could become anything they wanted to become just as i have. the context of the words that i spoke have created a
12:08 pm
misunderstanding, and i want -- to give everyone assurances, i want to state up front unequivocally and without doubt, i do not believe that any ethnic, racial, or gender group has an advantage in sound judging. i do believe that every person has an equal opportunity to be a good and wise judge regardless of their background or life experiences. >> sotomayor also defended a controversial 2008 decision. in it, she and two other judges backed the city of new haven, connecticut's move to reject the results of a firefighter promotion exam because few minorities qualified for promotions. sotomayor argued, quote, this was not quota case or an affirmative action case, and she went to say her decision was based strictly on
12:09 pm
well-established legal precedent. sotomayor's confirmation hearing is live and uninterrupted on our website, so if you'd like to watch more, you can do so at cnn.com/live. for a second time, a hearing over michael jackson's three kids has been postponed, and now we hear the star's mother is in talks with his ex-wife in a bid to get custody of those kids. what we're learning about the alleged deal that could come with a very big payday.
12:10 pm
12:11 pm
well, we could know what killed michael jackson within the next week now. a coroner's official in l.a. says some toxicology results to figure out if there were substances in jackson's body are already in and he says the remaining results are expected either this week or early next week, so authorities are looking into claims that jackson took large amounts of prescription drugs. now, the reporter who interviewed la toya jackson
12:12 pm
about her brother's death is revealing some new information from their conversation. la toya jackson told a london newspaper she suspects michael was murdered. according to a source close to the jackson family "the daily mail" paid for that interview last thursday. the reporter told larry king la toya said her brother was surrounded by people who fook advantage of him. >> the family tried to intervene. they knew that he was in trouble. they tried to stage an intervention, and every time they tried to get close to that house, they were prevented. joe jackson went to the front door on many occasions, she told me, went to the front gate. they wouldn't let him in. when la toya called the house, she couldn't speak to her brother. this is all very suspicious. >> now, there's word a deal is in the works that could determine who gets custody of michael jackson's children. a source close to the jackson family tells cnn katherine jackson's attorney is trying to hammer out an agreement with this woman, debbie rowe. reportedly, the jackson tamfami
12:13 pm
wants rowe to give up any rights to her two kids with jackson. >> we are told the family certainly wants her to give up any notion of custody and any visitation rights, but apparently the family is also trying to work out some nondisclosure agreement, which jackson even had with rowe after they got divorced. she wasn't allowed to talk to the media about him or even talk about their children. our source told us that rowe stands to be paid, quote, many millions if she agrees to give up any contact and any custody with her two children, so the singer's mother, katherine, can actually raise them. >> now, the source says rowe's willing to hear and possibly agree to the jackson family demands. well, she originally had visitation rights, the source said it never really worked out, whatever that means. so, this is our topic today. we want to know your thoughts on this. should debbie rowe have all or some partial custody with the oldest jackson children, or do you feel she should just take the money and get out of the picture?

12:15 pm
now, he also wants the entire club board to resign. here's the day camp. it was kicked out because the kids are primarily or mostly minorities. the club says the pool was overcrowded that day and has invited them back, but the camp says, you know what, sorry, but we're just not going. the famous welcome to fabulous las vegas sign is a graffiti mess. the tagging looks like it was done by a toddler with a crayon. county officials say the vandals used a marker and they may have to contract out to get this icon cleaned up. just two months ago, the sign went into the national register of historic places in case you didn't know. automatic coupons, coupons with bar codes that warn consumers of expired food. new high-tech help for shoppers coming your way. hln's "the clark howard show"s how your shopping life is actually going to get a lot easier, even though that sounded more complicated.

want to make sure you're aware of that option there. the space shuttle launch was scrubbed for the third straight day. more storms forced nasa to call off last night's launch. they'll try again tomorrow night. "endeavour" will have to undock earlier than planned and if it's pushed back a third day, nasa would have to cut a space walk from the mission. the next launch window after that doesn't open until july 26th. president obama wants $12 billion to shape up community colleges. he'll announce his plan later today at a community college in warren, michigan. the white house says community colleges play a big part in boosting the economy. the money would pay for renovating schools and creating new scholarships. the president wants to boost the number of community college graduates by 5 million over the next 11 years, he says. and the president did not let a shattered teleprompter trip him up during his speech in washington. take a look. >> we took swift and aggressive action in the first months of my
12:19 pm
administration to pour our economy -- sorry about that, guys. >> you heard it yourself. the prompter screen crashed to the floor. there it is, while the president was talking about his economic stimulus plan, obviously. he did continue his remarks using notes and a second teleprompter screen, by the way. well, sarah palin's decision to step down as alaska's governor isn't hurting her fund-raising power. a report filed with the federal election commission yesterday shows her political action committee raised almost $733,000 in its first five months. an estimated $200,000 more poured in since she announced she's resigning. she has overwhelming grassroots support. well, it looks like a lot of people had money to spend last month. economists are hoping the second straight increase in retail sales is the beginning of a trend here. sales rose 0.6%. and it's going to cost you more
12:20 pm
to throw your -- fill your refrigerator. wholesale prices jumped 1.8% last month. some items, such as vegetables, were up over 20%. overall, wholesale prices jumped 1.8% in june, and economists say it's only temporary, mainly tied to higher gasoline prices. have you noticed -- excuse me -- coupons are going high tech? that's some good news in a bad economy. hln money expert clark howard tells us about some of this new technology that's promising to help save money and trees. >> my 9-year-old loves going to self-service registers in the supermarket or the discount store and scanning things with the bar code. it's like she's having a field day when she gets to ring the stuff up. don't you wish every customer felt that way, mr. and ms. merchant? and the bar code has really not changed much in a long, long,
12:21 pm
long time, till now. you're going to see over the next year or two some ultraweirdo bar codes appearing on food items. there will be all kinds of good things about this, including thing where is you will get automatic coupons, where if you buy this item with this item, instead of having to pull a coupon out for the companion deal, once the register reads both of those item, it will give you the special coupon price. and how about this -- the bar code will tell you if an item's expired, and if it already is, it won't let you buy it in the supermarket. nice safety feature. i'm clark howard. for more ways for you to protect your wallet, go to cnn.com/clarkhoward. >> you can check out clark howard every saturday and sunday, by the way sh at noon and 4:00 p.m. eastern on hln. so, the big question today -- who will get custody of michael jackson's two oldest children? that's still unclear, but a hearing over their custody has been postponed yet again. could it have to do with a
12:22 pm
rumored payout to jackson's ex-wife?
12:23 pm
12:24 pm
you know, earlier we told you about word that there's a deal in the works that could determine who gets custody of michael jackson's children. well, a source close to the jackson family tells our sister network, cnn, katherine jackson's attorney trying to hammer out a financial agreement with debbie rowe. we want to know what you think about this. mary is calling us from san antonio, texas. thanks for taking the time. how do you see this whole thing? >> caller: well, i respect michael jackson's feelings and i believe that the grandmother should take custody. i don't believe that they should make such a big issue out of it since the will was already made. and it doesn't matter her age. she's still their grandma. she's not dying. and we don't know when we're going to die. so, i believe that debbie rowe
12:25 pm
should stay out of the picture since she's already been paid for, you know, leaving the children. and i don't think she should get a cent out of it. >> okay. i got you. mary in texas thinking that michael jackson's wishes should be honored based on what he had in the will. thank you so much for calling, mary. >> caller: thank you. >> kathy e-mailed us from san antonio. so, obviously, kathy thinking very differently than mary was. cindy is calling from virginia. cindy, give me your viewpoint. >> caller: yes. i think that katherine jackson should be the one to get the children. she is michael's mother. she's their grandmother. and that was michael's wishes as michael had custody of the children, i think his wishes should be honored.
12:26 pm
debbie rowe has no connection with those children whatsoever other than biologically. she's never been a mother for them. she's never been there, and it seems like all she's interested in is monetary means. she's been paid off once, but now she's back again to get more money, and when is it ever going to stop? let them be with their loving grandmother that can raise them and do good for them and it doesn't seem like katherine's interested in money. >> okay. >> caller: she wants the grandchildren. >> wants the grandchildren. cindy in virginia, cindy, thank you so much. mary e-mailed us. and laura in georgia says -- so,
12:27 pm
thank you all so much for taking the time out of your day to let us know how you feel and i want to invite the rest of you to do the same. do you think debbie rowe should have all or some part custody of the oldest jackson children since she's the biological mother, or should she just take the money and get out of the picture? what is your view? give us a call, 1-877-tell-hln, or e-mail us at cnn.com/hln. you can text us, too, text "views" plus your comments and name to hlntv. standard text rates do apply, by the way. but we're going to start airing your responses, obviously, shortly and continue to do so throughout the day. so, thanks for sharing. police in the florida panhandle announce more arrests in the murders of a wealthy florida couple. escambia county sheriff david morgan expected to give us more details.
12:28 pm
12:29 pm
12:30 pm
breaking news out of the florida panhandle we want to tell you about right now. we have learned that two more people have been arrested in the killings of a gulf coast couple inside their home. now, yesterday, police announced the arrest of a fourth murder suspect. here he is, gary lamont sumner. police say he -- we'll show you other video in a moment -- that's him on the left-hand side of the screen in this surveillance video. this was taken at a local store just days before byrd and melanie billings were killed. now, also arrested and charged with murder are wayne thomas coldiron and leonard patrick gonzalez jr. they're due in court in just a couple of hours. >> we have verified that three individuals dressed in black and masks entered the billings home from the east side.
12:31 pm
an additional fourth individual remained in the vehicle. >> we have identified a motive. a motive is robbery. but there are other motives we believe that will develop. >> byrd and melanie billings, as you can see from this family picture, had a growing brood of adopted children. many of them had special needs. police say they were ambushed when two groups of men burst into their home, killing them execution style. in just about 30 minutes, escambia county sheriff david morgan is expected to give us more details about the new arrests in this case. we're going to bring that to you live. it's expected at 1:00 eastern from poens cola, florida. please keep it here on hln "news and views." meanwhile, intense exchanges today between supreme court nominee sonia sotomayor and the senate judiciary committee's top republican. samantha hayes has the fireworks from day two of sotomayor's confirmation hearings. these are live pictures here. samantha, i understand they're
12:32 pm
taking a break at the moment. right? >> reporter: it appears so. yes, judge sonia sotomayor leaving the hearing room . we don't know for how long. the tone of the hearing today is much different than yesterday when we had hours of official statements from the senators. judge sonia sotomayor sat stoically for the first day of her supreme court confirmation hearing as one by one 19 senators on the judicial committee delivered their thoughts and opinions on their nomination. on day two, the questioning began. beating republicans to the punch, democratic judiciary committee chairman senator patrick leahy asked sotomayor to explain her off-the-bench comment where she said she hopes a wise latina woman would reach a better conclusion than a white man. >> you've heard all these charges and countercharges of wise latina and on and on. here's your chance. could you tell us -- tell us what's going on here, judge?
12:33 pm
>> i want to state up front unequivocally and without doubt, i do not believe that any ethnic, racial, or gender group has an advantage in sound judging. >> reporter: republicans pressed the issue. >> judge, i think it's consistent in the comments i've quoted to you and your previous statements that you do believe that your background will affect the results in cases. >> no, sir. as i've indicated, my record shows that at no points or times have i ever used my personal views or sympathies to influence the outcome of a case. >> reporter: so, aside from asking pointed questions, there is really not a whole lot more republican senators can do. they are well aware that democrats have more than enough votes to confirm sotomayor. christi? >> so, i'm curious to know how some maybe legal experts or analysts are absorbing all of this today as they watch these
12:34 pm
hearings. have you heard anything from them about how they think this is going down at this point? >> reporter: christi, they certainly point out that this is a political process as well as a judicial process. so, as i just mentioned, democrats have the votes to confirm sotomayor, so a lot of this for republicans is trying to, you know, reach the perfect blaps between being appropriately critical but not being perceived as attacking her. they want to please their constituents. at the same time, they don't want to lose an important voting bloc. >> all righty. samantha hayes live for us there. we're going to bring you more, of course, when they resume everything in a little bit. samantha, thank you so much. we appreciate it. i want to get to some news we're following about an emergency landing in orlando. get this. live pictures coming to us, but a southwest airlines boeing 737 just touched down. there's the plane. you see it now. some of the emergency vehicles that are pulling up to it. wkmg is reporting this is flight
12:35 pm
3238 from st. louis that you're looking at. now, we want to point out no injuries have been reported, which is the good news, but the station reports during the flight there was an indication that some sort of fire in the auxiliary power unit. and the orlando officials say the passengers, crew being evacuated via stairs on the runway and they're being bussed to a terminal. fire officials are inspecting the plane now, though. they have not found any damage so far, but again, this southwest plane that is flight 3238 from st. louis, emergency landing there in orlando, florida here. here's the thing. this is the second southwest plane in two days to make an emergency airline -- or emergency landing, rather. let's talk about the first one. southwest airlines says it's completed immediate inspections on its fleet of 737-300 aircraft. that amounts to nearly 200 planes. but those inspections were announced after a one-foot by
12:36 pm
one-foot hole opened up in flight on a southwest jet at 30,000 feet. and that's what caused the cabin to lose pressure. so, the plane was carrying 126 passengers, five crew members. it was going from nashville to baltimore. but it had to make an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing and about four rows back you heard this loud rush and your ears popped, and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out. and it was really -- it was crazy. and then the oxygen masks dropped, and of course i put mine on as i was instructed, then put them on my kids. and so, it was just crazy, though, but especially as a parent you're doing a lot of talking and calming and that kind of thing and how you've never gone through this before. >> immediately, the air bags deployed and started feeling a
12:37 pm
little lightheaded, and your ears start popping, stopping up, and we immediately began trying to put on our masks, trying to adjust them, and the flight attendants went into operation. they did an excellent job. >> now, thankfully, no one was hurt in that particular situation, but a southwest representative says there are no delays or cancellations due to that incident. but again, another emergency landing by a southwest plane, this one in orlando, and this just happening. the buses that you're seeing right now are transporting the passengers from flight 3238 that was coming in from st. louis. it landed at orlando international airport. no injuries being reported, thankfully, but apparently there is an indication that there was a fire in the auxiliary power unit, and as you can see, passengers and crew had been evacuated via stairs, and now
12:38 pm
they are being bussed to another terminal. fire officials are inspecting that plane right now. apparently they haven't found any damage, at least none that we're being told of, but you're seeing those passengers now as they're being transported. and, boy, the second southwest airlines flight that had a to make an emergency landing in two days. so, we'll keep our eye on this for you. also for a second time, a hearing over michael jackson's three kids. now we hear the star's mother is in talks with this woman, his ex-wife, in a bid to get custody of them. what we're learning about this alleged deal.
12:39 pm
12:40 pm
you are looking at a bus
12:41 pm
that is transporting people from a southwest airlines flight 3238 to to a terminal at orlando international airport. southwest, the boeing 737, just touched down from st. louis, but it made an emergency landing. no injuries have been reported, but tv reports say during this flight apparently there was an indication of fire in the auxiliary power unit. so, you're looking at live pictures as all of those passengers -- i think 129 passengers and five crew members -- were taken off that plane, that they're now being bussed to the terminal and fire officials are inspecting the plane as we speak. meanwhile, we could know what killed michael jackson within the next week. a coroner's office -- or official in l.a. says toxicology results to figure out if there were substances in jackson's body are already in. now, he says the remaining results are expected this week or early next week, but authorities are looking into claims that jackson took large
12:42 pm
amounts of prescription drugs, as you know. the reporter who interviewed la toya jackson talked to larry king last night about michael's children and the day before the memorial. she told king about a particularly touching moment involving jackson's daughter. >> she said to paris on the monday before the memorial service they had an open viewing of the casket. >> they did. >> and the little girl -- the boys didn't want to go, but paris said yes, i want to go and see daddy again, and the most poignant thing she said was that paris brought this little heart necklace with a heart in two parts and she said she put it around her daddy's wrist and put it around her neck and said i'm going to wear this now for the rest of my life. >> the reporter also said la toya told her jackson was not to be buried at neverland. there is word, though, a deal is in the works that could determine who gets custody of michael jackson's children. a source close to the jackson family tells our sister network, cnn, katherine jackson's attorney is trying to hammer out
12:43 pm
an agreement with this woman, debbie rowe. a lawyer who represents rowe said a newspaper reports that she had agreed to take $4 million not to challenge katherine jackson's custody was completely false. reportedly, the jackson family wants rowe to give up any rights to her two kids with jackson. >> we are told the family certainly wants her to give up any notion of custody and any visitation rights, but apparently the family is also trying to work out some nondisclosure agreement which jackson even had with rowe after they got gorsed. she wasn't allowed to talk to the media about them or about the children. our source says rowe stands to be paid, quote, many millions if she agrees to give up any contact and any custody to the two children so the singer's mother, katherine, can raise them. >> the source says rowe is willing to agree to the jackson family demands. while she originally had visitation rights, the source said it never really worked out.
12:44 pm
we want to know your thoughts on this. should debbie rowe have all or some part of custody of the oldest jackson children or take the money and get out of the picture? call us at 1-877-tell-hln. weed love to hear from you. or e-mail us at cnn.com/hln. you can text us, too. text the word "views" plus your comments and name to hlntv. standard text rates do apply. but your opinion is important to us. so, go ahead and chime in, won't you? we'll be airing your responses throughout the day. i'm jane velez-mitchell, and here's my issue. a florida couple dedicated to helping disabled children brutally gunned down in their own home. melanie and byrd billings adopted more than a dozen special-needs kids. and may heart goes out to these children. they've already been through hell, and now violence has torn their world apart. cops have already made arrests and anticipate even more to come. robbery is considered but one of the motives. but no motive will make this
12:45 pm
easier to understand. no motive explains why anyone would stage an attack in ninja outfits with what cops say was military precision against these wonderful people. this goes beyond any one motive or even, frankly, any one case. there is something toxic in our culture. and until we all say enough to this violence, there will always be sickos who think violence is some form of creative expression. i'm jane velez-mitchell, and that's my issue. >> now, there are breaking developments in the billings murder case, by the way. two more people have been arrested in connection with their killings. the sheriff of escambia county is holding a news conference at 1:00 eastern, just about 15 minutes from now. we hope to learn more then. so, keep it right here, because hln will have live coverage as soon as that news conference gets under way, just so you know. well, you stop by a grocery store for some salmon, ended up feeling like a piece of meat herself. how a massachusetts woman confronted a digital voyeur who

just got too close.
12:47 pm
we're bringing you some live

1:09 pm
some of those. those resources were being affected because they did really work around the clock. they didn't, they didn't quit. and i think that is a feature of this investigation that is unusual. in some regards, it certainly is very appropriate to honor those people and, again, in closing, i'd just like to say that i'm -- i share the sheriff's sorrow as this community does and to this family and hopeful that the matter is concluded now and hopefully they will be able to move forward although i realize how difficult that must be. >> at this time, we'll take your questions. >> talk about a development in connection with the family. people want to know why that family was targeted. >> again, we have a small amount of business ties, some

hopefully that will do that. >> has the safe been recovered? >> i can't and, again, as a prosecutor, i'm sure you understand that i'm not going to get into the specifics of the prosecution of the case and, really, most of the questions you're going to ask me about the prosecution of the case are the facts of the case, i will not be able to speak to and i'm sure that you understand that. >> what were some of the -- >> i'm not at liberty. not prepared to go into that at this time. >> was the safe within the home? >> i'm not prepared to go into that at this time. i think by indicating to you one of the items taken, the primary motive was home invasion robbery and really it's going to be difficult for the sheriff or i to answer additional questions on that because this case still has to be tried in the court of law. >> what tied these suspects together? >> well, really, myself won't go

well, a just released report says african-american students are closing the education gap in one region of the country, but they may be losing ground in another. the department of education says black students have made important gains in several southern states over two decades, but get this. in some northern states black achievement has improved more slowly than white achievement or in fact has even declined. the report says the most dramatic gaps are no longer seen in southern states such as alabama or mississippi that have a legacy of slavery and segregation, but rather in

northern and midwestern states such as wisconsin, nebraska, connecticut, and illinois. president obama meanwhile wants $12 billion to shape up community colleges. he'll announce his plan less than two hours from now at mccomb community college in warren, michigan. the white house says community colleges will play a big part in boosting the economy. the money would pay for renovating schools and creating new scholarships. the president wants to boost the number of community college graduates by 5 million over the next 11 years. and get this, just a month after paying back $10 billion in federal bailout money, goldman sachs reports a blowout quarter. cnnmoney.com's poppy harlow is in new york, and you've been breaking down these numbers. it's a whopper, isn't it? >> it is. it's good to be goldman sachs today. $3.4 billion in profit in just the second quarter. way past analysts' expectations. when you look at the revenue for
2:14 pm
the quarter, $13.8 billion. here is what's going on at goldman sachs. really high revenue from trading and underwriting, actually record highs for both of those areas. one of the reasons is the collapse of their two main competitors, lehman brothers and bear stearns. now that they're gone, this means a lot more business for goldman sachs and people are still doing business these days despite the recession. also, goldman sachs is very insulated from the parts of the banking industry right now that are not doing well at all, and that's direct consumer loans and direct business loans. goldman sachs doesn't have much of that exposure like citigroup and bank of america do. so they're very different in those respects. the question as to whether goldman sachs can keep this up, keep those profits turning by the billions. that's to be seen. but the ceo came out today, lloyd blankfein and said the market does remain fragile but he does see improvement in terms of the condition of the financial markets right now. a big day for goldman. >> i'd say. i bet a lot of people are
2:15 pm
looking at this wondering would this turnaround even have been possible out the taxpayer help it received? >> it's a great question. a lot of people scratching their head thinking what's going on here? the answer is probably not because that $10 billion in t.a.r.p. money that goldman sachs got coupled with billions of dollars in government guarantees of their debt allowed this bank to borrow money cheaply. they have profited from that. so there are questions about how this is going to play out politically. goldman is reaping the benefits of taxpayer aid while many americans are struggling to hold onto their home, hold onto their job, et cetera. what we're seeing really is that goldman sachs' employees could be in line for huge bonuses. since goldman has paid back all that t.a.r.p. money it received, there are no restrictions on how much it can reward its employees, and when you look at the earnings report out this morning, it said that goldman has sedt aside nearly $11.5 billion for compensation in the first half of this year for its employees.
2:16 pm
that is enough to pay each employee if you break it down more than $386,000 for the period. we still have got six more months to go this year, so the average 2009 compensation could be around $600,000. we want everyone to weigh in. you can weigh on on my facebook page, facebook.com/poppyhar low. so you can read more at cnnmoney.com. >> i bet there will be a lot to say to that one. thank you so much, poppy. you can get much more of today's business news on cnnmoney.com, of course. and you may think your cat is being affectionate when it purrs at you. oh, that friendly sound may be the cat's way of making you do exactly what it wants.

[ music ] >> welcome to comcast local edition, i'm donna richardson, and my guest this hour is christine bergmark who is the executive director of the southern maryland agricultural development commission. welcome, christine, it's good to have you here. >> thank you for having me. >> that's a big mouthful, and i know that you're working on an extremely exciting program, bi-local challenge. >> it is an initial that we launched two years ago, and essentially what it is is the last full week of july we ask everyone across the state of maryland and beyond to take a pledge, and the pledge is eat something or drink from a farm every day during that week. >> oh.
2:55 pm
so where do we get the information about where to find the farms or how do we sign up for this pledge? >> well, there's a website. it's www.by-local-challenge.com that website will give you all sorts of information why to buy local and where to buy local and it connects you to other statewide initiatives that are going on at the same time. if you go to the website, we've added a count. people used to say, where do i sign up? normally you have to go buy, eat something from a local farm. this year we decided to add a counter to the website. when you are' counted, you can receive a certificate with your name on it that you can put up in your office or your home or wherever. >> which is very, very important. it's reduces your carbon foot print because you're driving hopefully a shorter distance, you have access to local
2:56 pm
products that are available, and also it helps the farmers. >> well, and in fact, our theme this year is healthy plate, healthy planet. all kinds of benefits to buying local, benefits for you, healthy, nutrition, it's fresh, and preserving our farms survive, we keep clean water, we keep clean air, we reduce the carbon footprints from things traveling 1500 miles, and it tastes good. >> exactly. now for those people who may not cook, how can they be a part of this? >> yeah, sometimes people say, well, i hate to cook. that's okay. you can go to a store or to a restaurant that features local farm products, and there are more and more restaurants every year, some of them are on our website, and you can click throughout to find out who they are,. >> what kind of items can we acquire localfully. >> during the last week of july,
2:57 pm
there is so much product available. there's sweet corn, blackberries, all kinds of tomatoes and melons are in season, and of course, there's always wine, cheese, eggs, meatss. >> so we do have a wide variety of things we can get. say that i go and i go to a local farmer's market and purchase something, what is a vegetable that i'm not quite familiar with, how did i find a recipe. >> excellent question. there are recipes on our website. people can post their own recipes of their own events and own blogs by why they buy local. some of the things i wanted to mention is the economic benefits. we talked about the planet, we talked about the fact that it tastes good, and it's fun, but there's also the benefit of
2:58 pm
supporting our farms, and if every household in the state mucofmaryland were to buy just 2 worth of products for 8 weeks, basically the summer season that, would put $200 million straight back into the pockets of our farmers. that would do a lot to keep our farmers thriving. >> which is so important. i know we have less than 30 seconds, but you have some partners that you wouldn't typically think of who have now joined in. >> yes. hospitals are joining in this year. fact, they're looking to do a competition to see how many people they can get involved. >> have you exciting. christine, thank you very much for coming in today. >> thank you. >> my guest today has been christine bergmark with the southern agricultural commission. if you're interested in what comcast is doing in your area, go to on demand and click get local. for comcast local edition, i'm donna richardson. also arrested and charged, these three men, they are charged with murder. wayne thomas coldiron and len nord gonzales jr., they are due in court this afternoon. according to arrest warrants, gonzales' father was the get away driver in the red van. now, one of the suspects, leonard gonzales jr., who you see in the middle there, appeared in court this afternoon, in fact, already, and asked the judge to reduce his bail. >> i respectfully ask the court in the lack of other evidence, my family situation and as well as community activism to release me or to greatly reduce my bond and allow me to prepare to defend myself against these heinous charges, which is my constitutional right. at this time, i cannot afford an attorney. >> mr. gonzales, i'm looking at prior record, and i see at least

4:05 pm
not seek custody. later on, rowe's attorney sent a letter to "the new york post" and released it to the public, saying that this is a completely false report out there, and i'm going to read from it right here, christy. "there has been no agreement reached between rowe and the jacksons. she has not and will not give up her rights. no determination has been reached concerning custody or visitation, and she has not accepted and not will accept any additional financial support, consideration beyond the support she had from jackson years ago." they divorced in 1999, and she received $8.5 million, and that's according to court records. we don't know about the additional support she was being given or is still being given, possibly, and they are saying this is absolutely not true. but the new thing that's coming out of this is that previously her attorney said she had not reached a decision yet as to what she was going to do regarding the children, and now
4:06 pm

4:08 pm
the supreme court in the opinion authored by justice scalia said it was a question that the court should consider. >> now, earlier today, she had some pretty intense exchanges with senator jeff sessions, the committee's top republican. sotomayor defended a 2001 speech in which she suggested that a wise latina would reach better conclusions than a white man without similar life experiences. and she defended a controversial 2008 reverse discrimination ruling against firefighters in connecticut. that decision was overturned by the supreme court. here's the thing. this has been a pretty vocal conference, i guess you would say, on the hill, because earlier this afternoon, there was yet again another disturbance at the confirmation hearing as an anti-abortion demonstrator interrupted sotomayor. take a look. okay. we don't have that, i apologize.
