police make more arrests as they track down the identities of those shadowy figures captured by surveillance figures at the home of a florida couple. judge sonia sotomayor defends and explains past statements. and la toya jackson says she believes her brother was murder. what she told a reporter about how his entourage isolated michael jackson from their family. i hope the day has been good to you so far. i'm christi paul. so good to have your company with us. thanks for sharing. welcome to hln news on this day. we have some breaking news we want to share with you right out of the gate here coming out of the florida panhandle. we have learned that two more people have been arrested in the killings of a gulf coast couple inside their home. now, yesterday police announced the arrest of a fourth suspect,

gary lamont sumner. police say he's the man on the left in this surveillance video you see here. this was taken at a local store just days before byrd and melanie billings were killed. now, the couple had a growing brood of adopted children. many of them had special needs, as you see in this family picture. police say they were ambushed when two groups of men burst into their home, killing them execution style. ed lavendandera is live from pensacola, florida. so, ed, we have now, what, six suspects in custody overall? >> reporter: it is six total. the latest two arrests that have been made, we don't have a lot of details on that yet, but sheriff's office here in pensacola has scheduled a press conference for i think about an hour away from now where they will announce more details on who those people and what they have been charged with. but what is still unclear at this point is what the motive is behind these murders. surveillance cameras show two groups of men dressed like

ninjas bursting into the billings' home. two men come from the wooded area behind the house, and three men rush in through the front door. a new minutes later, byrd and melanie billings were shot to death while nine of their adopted children were also inside the house. >> it leads me to believe that this was a very well-planned and methodical operation. >> reporter: monday night, authorities announced the arrest of a fourth suspect, gary lamont sumner was pulled over in a routine traffic stop two counties away. authorities say he's one of the men seen in this picture on the left buying dark clothing in a florida walmart store days before the killings. he's now charged with murder. wayne thomas coldiron and leonard patrick gonzalez jr. have also been charged with murder. according to arrest warrants, patrick gonzalez sr. was the getaway driver in the red van. law enforcement sources tell cnn that coldiron and gonzalez sr. had done odd jobs on the billings property in the past. both men worked as day laborers in the pensacola area. but authorities say they haven't

positively determined what drove the intruders to murder the billings couple. >> we have identified a motive. a mote sieve robbery. but there are other motes we believe that will develop. >> reporter: the billings' home is filled with surveillance cameras that the family uses to monitor the adopted children throughout the house. federal authorities have been enhancing those video images to learn what happened during the four minutes that five men broke into their home. as for the billings children, we're told that they are being kept in a private location, being cared for by family members and they will continue to do that. christi? >> i wanted to ask you about some other surveillance video. is there any other surveillance video out there that police are kind of combing through right now? >> reporter: well, we asked the sheriff yesterday if it was safe to assume there were other video cameras and other vantage points inside the home that is helping them with this investigation. they said that that is, indeed, happening. we also asked if the murderers themselves were captured on

video surveillance cameras. the sheriff wouldn't say, if, indeed, that has happened, but federal authorities are going through those tapes, helping authorities here in penls cola enhance those video images. >> ed lavandera, thank you so much. we appreciate the update as always. in less than an hour, as ed mentioned, the sheriff is expected to give more details about the newest arrests in the deaths of byrd and melanie billings. we'll bring that to you live at 1:00 eastern from pensacola, florida, as it happens. meanwhile, let's get to the southwest airlines plane. the company says it's completed immediate inspections on its fleet of 737-300 aircraft. that amounts to nearly 200 planes. well, the inspections were announced after a one-foot by one-foot hole opened up in flight on a southwest jet at 30,000 feet, causing the cabin to lose pressure. can you imagine? the plane carrying 126

passengers and five crew members from nashville to baltimore had to make an emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing and about four rows back you heard this loud rush and your ears popped, and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out. and it was really -- it was crazy. then the oxygen masks dropped, and of course i put mine on as i was instructed, then put them on my kids. so, it was just crazy, though, but especially as a parent you're doing a lot of talking and calming and that kind of thing and how you've never gone through this before. >> immediately, the air bags deployed and started feeling a little lightheaded, and the ears start popping, stopping up, and we immediately began trying to

put on our masks, trying to adjust them, and the flight attendants went into operation. they did an excellent job. >> now, thankfully, no one was hurt, but a southwest representative says there are no delays nor are there any cancellations due to this incident. just glad everybody's okay. you know, we have this just in. the mastermind behind the largest ponzi scheme ever, bernard madoff, has arrived at a federal prison in butler, north carolina. here's the new video we have, and there he is highlighted. madoff was held overnighted a a medium security prison in atlanta. it's a detention center for prisoners being transferred to other facilities, primarily. now, the atlanta prison once housed charles ponzi, the namesake of financial fraud for which madoff was sentenced to 150 years. madoff's lawyer requests he be locked up near new york so he could be close to his family. that's the latest video we have there. a tough test in day two of

judge sonia sotomayor's supreme court confirmation hearings. here are live pictures as she's had some intense exchanges with particularly senator jeff sessions. he's the senate judiciary committee top republican. well, the judge repeatedly vigorously defended a 2001 speech where she suggested that a wise latina would more often than not reach better conclusions than a white man without similar life experiences. >> i was trying to inspire them to believe that their life experiences would enrich the legal system because different life experiences and backgrounds always do. i don't think that there is a quarrel with that in our society. i was also trying to inspire them to believe that they could become anything they wanted to become just as i have. the context of the words that i spoke have created a

about her brother's death is revealing some new information from their conversation. la toya jackson told a london newspaper she suspects michael was murdered. according to a source close to the jackson family "the daily mail" paid for that interview last thursday. the reporter told larry king la toya said her brother was surrounded by people who fook advantage of him. >> the family tried to intervene. they knew that he was in trouble. they tried to stage an intervention, and every time they tried to get close to that house, they were prevented. joe jackson went to the front door on many occasions, she told me, went to the front gate. they wouldn't let him in. when la toya called the house, she couldn't speak to her brother. this is all very suspicious. >> now, there's word a deal is in the works that could determine who gets custody of michael jackson's children. a source close to the jackson family tells cnn katherine jackson's attorney is trying to hammer out an agreement with this woman, debbie rowe. reportedly, the jackson tamfami

wants rowe to give up any rights to her two kids with jackson. >> we are told the family certainly wants her to give up any notion of custody and any visitation rights, but apparently the family is also trying to work out some nondisclosure agreement, which jackson even had with rowe after they got divorced. she wasn't allowed to talk to the media about him or even talk about their children. our source told us that rowe stands to be paid, quote, many millions if she agrees to give up any contact and any custody with her two children, so the singer's mother, katherine, can actually raise them. >> now, the source says rowe's willing to hear and possibly agree to the jackson family demands. well, she originally had visitation rights, the source said it never really worked out, whatever that means. so, this is our topic today. we want to know your thoughts on this. should debbie rowe have all or some partial custody with the oldest jackson children, or do you feel she should just take the money and get out of the picture?

now, he also wants the entire club board to resign. here's the day camp. it was kicked out because the kids are primarily or mostly minorities. the club says the pool was overcrowded that day and has invited them back, but the camp says, you know what, sorry, but we're just not going. the famous welcome to fabulous las vegas sign is a graffiti mess. the tagging looks like it was done by a toddler with a crayon. county officials say the vandals used a marker and they may have to contract out to get this icon cleaned up. just two months ago, the sign went into the national register of historic places in case you didn't know. automatic coupons, coupons with bar codes that warn consumers of expired food. new high-tech help for shoppers coming your way. hln's "the clark howard show"s how your shopping life is actually going to get a lot easier, even though that sounded more complicated.

taking a break at the moment. right? >> reporter: it appears so. yes, judge sonia sotomayor leaving the hearing room . we don't know for how long. the tone of the hearing today is much different than yesterday when we had hours of official statements from the senators. judge sonia sotomayor sat stoically for the first day of her supreme court confirmation hearing as one by one 19 senators on the judicial committee delivered their thoughts and opinions on their nomination. on day two, the questioning began. beating republicans to the punch, democratic judiciary committee chairman senator patrick leahy asked sotomayor to explain her off-the-bench comment where she said she hopes a wise latina woman would reach a better conclusion than a white man. >> you've heard all these charges and countercharges of wise latina and on and on. here's your chance. could you tell us -- tell us what's going on here, judge?

>> i want to state up front unequivocally and without doubt, i do not believe that any ethnic, racial, or gender group has an advantage in sound judging. >> reporter: republicans pressed the issue. >> judge, i think it's consistent in the comments i've quoted to you and your previous statements that you do believe that your background will affect the results in cases. >> no, sir. as i've indicated, my record shows that at no points or times have i ever used my personal views or sympathies to influence the outcome of a case. >> reporter: so, aside from asking pointed questions, there is really not a whole lot more republican senators can do. they are well aware that democrats have more than enough votes to confirm sotomayor. christi? >> so, i'm curious to know how some maybe legal experts or analysts are absorbing all of this today as they watch these

hearings. have you heard anything from them about how they think this is going down at this point? >> reporter: christi, they certainly point out that this is a political process as well as a judicial process. so, as i just mentioned, democrats have the votes to confirm sotomayor, so a lot of this for republicans is trying to, you know, reach the perfect blaps between being appropriately critical but not being perceived as attacking her. they want to please their constituents. at the same time, they don't want to lose an important voting bloc. >> all righty. samantha hayes live for us there. we're going to bring you more, of course, when they resume everything in a little bit. samantha, thank you so much. we appreciate it. i want to get to some news we're following about an emergency landing in orlando. get this. live pictures coming to us, but a southwest airlines boeing 737 just touched down. there's the plane. you see it now. some of the emergency vehicles that are pulling up to it. wkmg is reporting this is flight

3238 from st. louis that you're looking at. now, we want to point out no injuries have been reported, which is the good news, but the station reports during the flight there was an indication that some sort of fire in the auxiliary power unit. and the orlando officials say the passengers, crew being evacuated via stairs on the runway and they're being bussed to a terminal. fire officials are inspecting the plane now, though. they have not found any damage so far, but again, this southwest plane that is flight 3238 from st. louis, emergency landing there in orlando, florida here. here's the thing. this is the second southwest plane in two days to make an emergency airline -- or emergency landing, rather. let's talk about the first one. southwest airlines says it's completed immediate inspections on its fleet of 737-300 aircraft. that amounts to nearly 200 planes. but those inspections were announced after a one-foot by

pictures of an emergency landing in orlando by a southwest airlines plane. the buses you're looking at just transported the passengers and crew of southwest to the boeing terminal. this is a boeing 737. it just touched down in st. louis. it was headed to orlando, so this was its destination, but no injuries have been reported, thankfully. there are local media, though, saying during the flight there was some indication of fire in the auxiliary power unit which constituted an emergency landing, so fire officials are inspecting that plane, but of course this coming on the heels of yesterday's southwest emergency landing. a southwest plane yesterday when a hole was found in the plane. they were 30,000 feet up. thankfully, no injuries there, but that plane was touched down and emergency landing in charleston, west virginia. you can see somebody there examining the plane now. southwest airlines has said they've inspected all their

737-300 planes, this type of plane, and that was more than 200 planes and that all of them have checked out okay so far. but, again, two emergency landings by southwest planes in the last two days. a massachusetts woman chased down a man who brushed up against her at a groegsry store and she demanded to see his digital camera, and on it maria found pictures he'd taken of her backside. >> when i grabbed him, he said sorry, please let me go, please let me go. he had the wrong girl. i wasn't letting him go. >> store employees detained 74-year-old harold dorey until police arrived. investigators say the camera was loaded with pictures of other women. she's upset that the worst he'll face is a misdemeanor complaint of annoying and accosting a member of the opposite sex. police say there just isn't a clearly defined law apparently that he's broken. a pennsylvania swim club accused of racism could be sued

for discrimination now. a federal lawsuit is expected to be filed in wants the entire club board to resign. this day camp says it was kicked out because most of the kids are minorities. the space shuttle launch scrubbed for the third straight day. more storms forced nasa to call off last night's launch but they'll try again tomorrow night and even if that goes off without a hitch, "endeavour" will have to undock earlier than planned. if the launch is pushed back to thursday, nasa would have to cut a spacewalk from the mission. the next launch window after that is july 26th. bernard madoff has arrived at a federal prisoner in buttoner, north carolina, we've heard. there he is, right now, we have him highlighted there that detention center in atlanta is

i have had the honor of the sheriff of this fine organization to witness the best in man. compassion, kindness, integrity and professionalism. last thursday after this tragedy we asked melanie and members of her family and husband to come to the escambia office one day after this tragedy. and, ashley, you may recall sitting in the office while you feeled very helpless at that mome, i asked you if there was anything i could do for you. your response back to me was, sheriff, find the people who did this. it is my honor today to tell you, ashley, and your family, that we have found them and they are in custody. we were passing out to the press

the following package, seven individuals are currently in custody related to the murders of byrd and melanie billings. you will note one photograph is absent, the reason for this is this individual is a 16-year-old juvenile. and the last thing i want to do before i turn it over to mr. eddens is give credit where credit is due. if you have a point in your life where you a moment that you can stand and serve with people of greatness, you are truly blessed. i had that opportunity during my military career on more than one occasion and i can tell you in the last five days i have stood in the presence of greatness at the escambia county sheriff's office and i would be remissed if not recognizing personally the men and women that in five days have brought this case to its conclusion. and i would ask that you direct your attention to this side of

tobacco, alcohol and firearms and drug enforcement. at that time, i will conclude my remarks for your questions and turn the podium over to mr. bill eddens. >> as you know, i'm state attorney in this area and in a major investigation such as this, it is important that law enforcement and the district attorney or state attorney's office work closely together and in this case, that occurred and i would like to personally thank the sheriff and the members of his team who worked with my office. we had several people in my office that personally came out of the sheriff's office and worked and i can assure you the second thing that's unusual in some ways about this is the vast number of resources that sheriff allocated for this situation. you saw and you heard him list

some of those. those resources were being affected because they did really work around the clock. they didn't, they didn't quit. and i think that is a feature of this investigation that is unusual. in some regards, it certainly is very appropriate to honor those people and, again, in closing, i'd just like to say that i'm -- i share the sheriff's sorrow as this community does and to this family and hopeful that the matter is concluded now and hopefully they will be able to move forward although i realize how difficult that must be. >> at this time, we'll take your questions. >> talk about a development in connection with the family. people want to know why that family was targeted. >> again, we have a small amount of business ties, some

friendships, but no direct tie that we can, at this time, confirm between the members here that are charged with this crime and the billings family. >> were they working there? were they working on the property? >> mr. gonzalez senior had a window washing business and wayne coldiron worked for him and i think we can confirm he was at the property one time. where you look to look for a long-term relationship and we have yet to confirm that. >> you said just a moment ago that we hope this matter is concluded. do you feel this matter is concluded or another layer now to look at now that you have the people on the property? >> there are some follow-on investigations. we have at least one individual that we are specifically looking for at this time or at, i should

say. excuse me, at. there may be others. but at this time, we only have one identified. >> what is the reason investigators might be involved? is there a reason beyond the current seven or is there something else they are involved with? >> there are elements of this case that go outside of the state of florida, which i will not speak to. the reason being is that we had a meeting yesterday with the federal agencies and we passed along to them the information that had been developed during this case and now it's within their purview to investigate this case. if it's within the confines of escambia county, of course, we will be involved. on a routine basis, video enhancement, we used the florida department of law enforcement, alcohol, tobacco and firearms and anything involving members of this group that might have been involved with drug activity we would coordinate with our division and they were involved from those perspectives and anything that we developed

outside the cuonfines of the state of offalful have been turned over to those agencies. >> motives yesterday. you said that there was one motive or more than one motive? >> you move under to the prosecutorial area and i'll defer that question to mr. eddins. >> the safest, easiest thing to say is that the primary motive in this crime is robbery. home invasion, robbery. pardon me. >> did they, what did they rob from there, can you say at this point? >> well, they did take items that you would normally expect to be taken in a robbery. >> money? >> a safe. >> where was the safe? >> we can't go into any additional details. i gave that to you to demonstrate the motive and

hopefully that will do that. >> has the safe been recovered? >> i can't and, again, as a prosecutor, i'm sure you understand that i'm not going to get into the specifics of the prosecution of the case and, really, most of the questions you're going to ask me about the prosecution of the case are the facts of the case, i will not be able to speak to and i'm sure that you understand that. >> what were some of the -- >> i'm not at liberty. not prepared to go into that at this time. >> was the safe within the home? >> i'm not prepared to go into that at this time. i think by indicating to you one of the items taken, the primary motive was home invasion robbery and really it's going to be difficult for the sheriff or i to answer additional questions on that because this case still has to be tried in the court of law. >> what tied these suspects together? >> well, really, myself won't go

into detail on that. the sheriff will speak of that brief le. >> again, what we have is business dealings, again, i'll use the example of mr. gonzalez sr. owned a window washing business part-time. he would hire members of this group and organization to work on a part-time basis on an as-needed basis as work would come through. the individuals that we have secured in the last phase of this investigation that are currently in custody are from ocalusa. their ties are from a detailing group. leonard patrick gonzalez jr. he is the organizer. >> you talked about yesterday -- >> one moment.

we'll not speak to that issue at this time. >> you said that there's one more person you're sort of looking at. >> yes. >> what is the nature of the concern of that individual? >> anyone that aided or abetted in the commission of this crime. >> sheriff, did any of these suspects flat out confess to the details? >> they did. they did. >> are they all from here? >> no, i just stated the last four individuals are from ocalusa county. >> did he say what the goal was in this? >> no, he did not. >> when was the last time those suspects were on that property for business purposes? >> we won't release that information at this time. >> with the power washing company and whose company was that? >> no, you confused my statement. the power washing company was owned by leonard patrick gonzalez sr.

senior, the elder. he had a pressure washing business he operated. we have tied wayne coldiron to him on a day-labor basis. you go to ocalusa county and we have a detailing business, fifth dimensions auto detailing. >> well, we've learned a lot in the killing on july 9th of an elderly couple, actually, a very well-known couple that adopted a lot of special needs kids in a home invasion that the state attorney declared was primarily motivated by robbery. they took is a safe, among other items. two more people arrested in the last 24 hours including a young man, 16 and 18. and he called, you may have heard that, he the organizer of all this, leonard gonzalez jr., apparently he tied the pressure water business his dad ran and between all six individuals,

according to prosecutors and law enforcement officers, they put together this scheme for a home invasion on july 9th and it resulted in the deaths of two people who were deeply loved in the escambia and pensacola areas of florida. six people in custody, the seventh person, leonard gonzalez sr. is charged with trying to tampering with evidence. we could learn more of what killed michael jackson in the next week. some toxicology results is due, perhaps by friday or monday at the latest. to determine what substances were in jackson's body. he said they should get the remaining results either friday or early next week. authorities are looking into claims that jackson took large amounts of prescription drugs. the lawyer for jackson's ex-wife debbie rowe denying reports that there is any custody reports in the works and an attorney for debbie rowe calls the newspaper report false that she had agreed

to take $4 million not to challenge catherine jackson's custody rights. but a source close to the jackson family says that jackson's attorney is trying to hammer out a deal with debbie rowe. reportedly the jackson family wants rowe to give up any rights to her two children with michael jackson. >> we're told that the family wants her to give up any notion of custody and any visitation rights, but, apparently, the family is trying to work out some nondisclosure agreement that jackson had with rowe after they got divorced. she wasn't allowed to talk to the media about them or their children. she will be paid millions if she gives up any custody and so katherine can raise them. >> a court hearing was pushed back yesterday. an update now on last week's memorial for michael jackson. the mayor of los angeles,

antonio villaraigosa says the city will pay for services related to the memorial. police, traffic control and other services cost at least $1.4 million. the mayor called a website asking for donations ridiculous and the site closed on friday. it's now not known if the $35,000 raised will be returned to the donors. the city council will review the costs of the event today. for the second day in a row, a southwest airlines jet makes an emergency landing, this time flight 3238 from st. louis to orlando touched down safely in orlando. you see those three buses there they're carrying the passengers. 124 of them safely evacuated from flight. a warning light came on suggesting there might be a fire onboard on the auxiliary power unit. but inspectors found nothing and no damage, no injuries have been reported. southwest says it has completed immediate inspections on its entire fleet of 737s that amounts to 200 planes.

the inspections were announced after a one foot by one foot hole opened up in flight at 30,000 feet causing the cabben to quickly lose pressure and the plane with 126 passengers from nashville to baltimore made an emergency landing last night in charleston, west virginia. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing and about four rows back you heard this loud rush and your ears popped and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out and it was crazy and then oxygen masks dropped and, of course y put mine on as i was instructed to and then on my kids. was just crazy, though. as a parent, you're doing a lot of talking and calming and that kind of thing and how you've never gone through this before. >> immediately the airbags deployed and started feeling a

little light headed and your ears start popping, stuffing up and we immediately began to put on our masks, trying to adjust them and the flight attendants went into operations and they did an excellent job. >> thankfully nobody was hurt. a southwest representative said there are no delays of cancellations because of the incident. a pennsylvania swim club accused of racism could soon be facing a federal discrimination lawsuit. an attorney for a day camp that was asked to leave said he expects to file that suit within a week. he also wants the entire club board to resign. the club was kicked out because the kids are mostly minorities and the club says the pool was overcrowded that day and it invited the camp back. bernie madoff takes a trip. where he spent the night and where he is now. ñññoññ o

>> we have identified a motive, a motive is robbery. but there are other motives we believe that will develop. >> that was earlier. that was yesterday or the day before. that was a little bit flushed out today. it was, indeed, primarily a robbery, a home invasion robbery, they say, that a safe was taken from the house. byrd and melanie billings had a growing brood of adopted kids, many with special needs. police said they were ambushed when two groups of men ambush under to their home and killed them execution style. nancy grace is investigating all the new aspects, the late-breaking details and we learned a lot just in the last half hour surrounding the billings' shooting deaths and plus she's taking your calls tonight at 8:00 and 10:00 eastern right here on hln. the senate judiciary committee is judging judge sotomayor. controversial comments and controversial rulings and other controversies like gun rights, late-term abortions and even the possibility of cameras in the supreme court chamber.

dana bash is joining us live from washington. dana, they're on a lunch break now? >> they're on a lunch break and they'll come back in a half hour, little less and you mention the controversial comments that we reported on, everybody did for weeks and weeks after judge sotomayor was initially appointed and because the democrats knew full well that this would be her first opportunity to get questioned, not just by them, but also by republicans. it was the democratic chairman who made the tactical decision to launch a preemptive strike, if you will. he was the first one that asked about the comments, the general idea that she has said many times in the past in speeches over the years that she thought as a latina woman she might make decisions that are different and, in some cases, better than others. the initial response was very scri scriptive and she wanted to state without a doubt that she did not believe any racial, ethnic or gender group has an

advantage in sound judging. so, that was her general answer to the democrat, but the lead republican, jeff sessions, pounded her. he asked, chuck, basically the same question about 12 different times and 12 different variations on this issue, really seeming inkrejulous that she could say this now but have a very different take in her public speeches just a few years ago. finally, he got the judge to say this. >> i was trying to play on her words. my play was -- fell flat. it was bad. it left an impression that i believe that life experiences commanded a result in the case, but that's clearly not what i do as a judge. it's clearly not what i intended in the context of my broader speech, which was attempting to insmir young hispanic, latino

lawyers to believe that their life experiences added value to the process. >> now, to put all of this in context, this back and forth about this issue and whether or not it really matters, you know, pretty much every republican here will tell you that they do believe barring some unforeseen meltdown, she will get confirmed. but, look, the white house and democrats, they want this to be a bipartisan vote and at least one republican senator, lindsey graham who suggested he might be one of the republicans who will vote for her, he told my colleague that she has to do a better job than she's doing to reassure people on that issue. why she said many times in many different ways or at least suggested that she would use her background perhaps to make a better decision than others and today she is saying over and over again that she does not see her view and her role as a judge in that way. and that is simply to look at the facts and decide then. certainly, that is what everyone welcomes. republicans and democrats want

to hear, but some republicans i've talked to said this is a confirmation conversion. john? >> yeah. talk about the second amendment. she was asked whether states could regulate gun laws. what was her answer? >> they knew what the white house democrats knew full well. that this would be a key republican point of questioning and line of questioning. it is one of those issues that really does cross party lines and makes a lot of conservative democrats, especially in the united states senate a little uncomfortable. the idea that anybody, any supreme court justice for sure would want to limit the second amendment and second amendment rights shift. she came out of the gate saying, again, with a pretty scripted question from a democrat saying that she understands the second amendment and she has a godchild that is a member of the nra but when it came to the real detailed questions from senator hatch, a former member of this committee, a republican, of

course, she really wouldn't answer the question on specifics on how she would necessarily rule when she was at the supreme court, she tried to defer a lot of odifferent ways of this concept of how she would rule because she said that these cases are going to come before the supreme court and she wanted to sort of, you know, punt, if you will, kick the can. he led her in many ways on this. we didn't get a firm answer, at least from the republican point of view on how she would vote in the futer. >> the gavel falls at 2:00 as the hearing resums. we could know what killed michael jackson in the next week, maesz less. some results from toxicology results are already in and the remaining results are due late this week or early next week. those tests determine what substances were in jackson's body when he died. he look large amounts of prescription drugs. the lawyer for jackson's ex-wife debbie rowe involving her custody for her two

well, a just released report says african-american students are closing the education gap in one region of the country, but they may be losing ground in another. the department of education says black students have made important gains in several southern states over two decades, but get this. in some northern states black achievement has improved more slowly than white achievement or in fact has even declined. the report says the most dramatic gaps are no longer seen in southern states such as alabama or mississippi that have a legacy of slavery and segregation, but rather in

northern and midwestern states such as wisconsin, nebraska, connecticut, and illinois. president obama meanwhile wants $12 billion to shape up community colleges. he'll announce his plan less than two hours from now at mccomb community college in warren, michigan. the white house says community colleges will play a big part in boosting the economy. the money would pay for renovating schools and creating new scholarships. the president wants to boost the number of community college graduates by 5 million over the next 11 years. and get this, just a month after paying back $10 billion in federal bailout money, goldman sachs reports a blowout quarter. cnnmoney.com's poppy harlow is in new york, and you've been breaking down these numbers. it's a whopper, isn't it? >> it is. it's good to be goldman sachs today. $3.4 billion in profit in just the second quarter. way past analysts' expectations. when you look at the revenue for

the quarter, $13.8 billion. here is what's going on at goldman sachs. really high revenue from trading and underwriting, actually record highs for both of those areas. one of the reasons is the collapse of their two main competitors, lehman brothers and bear stearns. now that they're gone, this means a lot more business for goldman sachs and people are still doing business these days despite the recession. also, goldman sachs is very insulated from the parts of the banking industry right now that are not doing well at all, and that's direct consumer loans and direct business loans. goldman sachs doesn't have much of that exposure like citigroup and bank of america do. so they're very different in those respects. the question as to whether goldman sachs can keep this up, keep those profits turning by the billions. that's to be seen. but the ceo came out today, lloyd blankfein and said the market does remain fragile but he does see improvement in terms of the condition of the financial markets right now. a big day for goldman. >> i'd say. i bet a lot of people are

looking at this wondering would this turnaround even have been possible out the taxpayer help it received? >> it's a great question. a lot of people scratching their head thinking what's going on here? the answer is probably not because that $10 billion in t.a.r.p. money that goldman sachs got coupled with billions of dollars in government guarantees of their debt allowed this bank to borrow money cheaply. they have profited from that. so there are questions about how this is going to play out politically. goldman is reaping the benefits of taxpayer aid while many americans are struggling to hold onto their home, hold onto their job, et cetera. what we're seeing really is that goldman sachs' employees could be in line for huge bonuses. since goldman has paid back all that t.a.r.p. money it received, there are no restrictions on how much it can reward its employees, and when you look at the earnings report out this morning, it said that goldman has sedt aside nearly $11.5 billion for compensation in the first half of this year for its employees.

so where do we get the information about where to find the farms or how do we sign up for this pledge? >> well, there's a website. it's www.by-local-challenge.com that website will give you all sorts of information why to buy local and where to buy local and it connects you to other statewide initiatives that are going on at the same time. if you go to the website, we've added a count. people used to say, where do i sign up? normally you have to go buy, eat something from a local farm. this year we decided to add a counter to the website. when you are' counted, you can receive a certificate with your name on it that you can put up in your office or your home or wherever. >> which is very, very important. it's reduces your carbon foot print because you're driving hopefully a shorter distance, you have access to local

>> we were passing out to the press the following package. seven individuals are currently in custody. related to the murders of byrd and melanie billings. you will note one photograph is absent. the reason for this is this individual is a 16-year-old juvenile. >> police say sumner, and donald stallworth and frederick lee thornton are in custody. all seven suspects will be charged with first-degree mird in the deaths of the couple. the prosecutors revealed for the first time a safe was among the item taken from the home west of pensacola. also arrested and charged with murder are coldiron and gonzalez jr. they're due in court this afternoon. according to the arrest warrants gonzales jr.'s father was a driver in the getaway van.

county officials plan to increase inspections at 22 cemeteries. they will checked four times a year, not just once. a report concludes african-american students are closing the education gap in one region of the country, but may be losing ground in another. the education department says black students have made important gains in several southern states the last two decades. but in some northern states black achievement has improved more slowly than white achievement or has in fact declined. the most dramatic black/white gaps are no longer in southern states like alabama and mississippi that have legacies of slavery and segregation. the largest is in wisconsin, nebraska, connecticut, and illinois. president obama wants $12 billion to shape up community colleges. he's announcing his plan in

just one month after paying back $10 billion in federal bailout money goldman sachs reports a blowout quarter. cnnmoney.com's poppy harlow is joining us with the latest. impressive, right? >> $3.4 billion, nothing to laugh at. serious profit for goldman sachs in the second quarter. the numbers better than even analysts expected. take a look, folks. that's in just a three-month period. why zid this happen to goldman sachs? one reason for this, the collapse of their main competition lehman brothers and bear stearns. somewhat insulated from parts of

the banking world right now that aren't doing well. we're talking direct consumer loans and loans to businesses. so the question is till whether goldman sachs can keep this up down the load. the ceo coming out today saying yes, markets still refragile. but he did see improving conditions. a blowout quarter certainly. >> would that have been possible without taxpayer help? probably not. the t.a.r.p. money and a lot of government guarantees of goldman sachs. that allows the bank to borrow cheaply. the they're profiting now. the question on that is how did it play out politically? goldman reaping the benefits while americans are certainly struggling. this turnaround could be good

authorities announce more arrests in an ambush and brutal killings of a florida couple who look eed after a group of speci needs children. police say they may have a motive why seven suspects targeted the couple. the fate of michael jackson's three kids still up in the air after a custody hearing was delayed yet again. does it have something to do with rumors of a settlement between his ex-wife and his mother? and southwest airlines inspects its entire fleet of 737s after a hole opens up on one of the jets during a flight. hear from some of the nerp vous passengers on board. so glad to have you on board with us here, i'm christy paul with hln news and views. we have some big news out of the

florida panhandle. a total of seven people, six adults, one juvenile, now under arrest in the killings of a gulf coast couple inside their home. at a news conference this afternoon, well, here is what we learned about the latest suspects there. >> we are passing out to the press the following package. seven individuals are currently in custody, related to the murders of byrd and melanie billings. you will note one photograph is absent. the reason for that is, this individual is a 16-year-old juvenile. >> now, police say these three men, gary lamont sumner, fredrick lee thornton and donald ray stallworth are in police custody. the district attorney says all seven suspects will be charged with first degree murder in the deaths of byrd and melanie billings. the prosecutor revealed for the first time, a safe was among the items taken from the home.

also arrested and charged, these three men, they are charged with murder. wayne thomas coldiron and len nord gonzales jr., they are due in court this afternoon. according to arrest warrants, gonzales' father was the get away driver in the red van. now, one of the suspects, leonard gonzales jr., who you see in the middle there, appeared in court this afternoon, in fact, already, and asked the judge to reduce his bail. >> i respectfully ask the court in the lack of other evidence, my family situation and as well as community activism to release me or to greatly reduce my bond and allow me to prepare to defend myself against these heinous charges, which is my constitutional right. at this time, i cannot afford an attorney. >> mr. gonzales, i'm looking at prior record, and i see at least

seven prior convictions. you've done state prison time. i've read the arrest report. i think there is sufficient evidence which gives me great concern for our community. i'm going to grant the state's request that you be held would bo bond. >> hln's nancy grace is investigating all the new arrests and late breaking details surrounding this. and she's taking your calls. that's tonight at 8:00 and 10:00 p.m. eastern, right here on hln, so we hope you're here with us. michael jackson's toxicology results could be available really any day now. they could reveal an official cause of death, of course. but will they answer all of the questions here? nancy grace producer that tisha lance is in los angeles with the latest, and the latest in the legal wrangling with the kids. let's get to the toxicology results first. when might we expect something?

>> it could be as early as friday is what they are saying. if not friday, the middle of next week. and this is going to help with the police investigation which is going on. they can kind of waiting for the results, too, to figure out whether or not this death investigation is going to reach to -- go up to the level of a criminal investigation, and possibly a homicide. >> okay. nastisha, let me ask you about the kids. there have been rumors out there of a multi-million dollar settle. that are trying to be hammered out between debbie rowe, the biological mother of jackson's two eldest children, and jackson's mother, katherine jackson. what do we know about that? >> right. well, there was a report that came from "the new york post," and what this report was saying is that debbie rowe reached an agreement with katherine jackson for $4 million, she would relish quick her parental rights and

not seek custody. later on, rowe's attorney sent a letter to "the new york post" and released it to the public, saying that this is a completely false report out there, and i'm going to read from it right here, christy. "there has been no agreement reached between rowe and the jacksons. she has not and will not give up her rights. no determination has been reached concerning custody or visitation, and she has not accepted and not will accept any additional financial support, consideration beyond the support she had from jackson years ago." they divorced in 1999, and she received $8.5 million, and that's according to court records. we don't know about the additional support she was being given or is still being given, possibly, and they are saying this is absolutely not true. but the new thing that's coming out of this is that previously her attorney said she had not reached a decision yet as to what she was going to do regarding the children, and now

she's, now, his letter is saying that she has not and will not give up her parental rights, so we will be back in court on monday, to figure out this custody issue that is going on. we were supposed to be there yesterday, but it was moved until monday. we'll see if rowe is in court. her attorney is expected to be there, though. >> interesting. so monetarily, this letter is very definitive in she will not ask for anymore money. but when it comes to the fate of the kids, she's still in the game, it sounds like. natisha, thank you for the update. and i want to let you know, this is our views topic today, as well. what do you think about this? should debbie rowe have all or part of the custody, or do you think it's time for her to get out of the picture? e-mail us your view at cnn.com/hln. you can text us, as well.

but this was another -- this was the third or fourth disruption. as you might remember, there were several times yesterday activists disrupted the testimony that was being given, as well. going to be keeping an eye on that for you, as well. i want to let you know that officials at the white house are now saying the first lady's father was not buried at the illinois cemetery where authorities believe bodies were moved so plots could be resold off the books. now, earlier, the first lady's office said frazier robinson iii was buried at burr oak cemetery. now it says he was not. robinson was laid to rest about two miles away, apparently, at lincoln cemetery, rather. if you've been to air shows, you know these spectacular stunts you get to see there. when things go wrong, they get really frightening really fast. what happened at the end of this

potentially deadly spiral.

well, look at this melee. fists started flying after the sentencing of a man convicted of killing the son of a former police chief in michigan. this brawl broke out yesterday in michigan. we don't know why the fight started, but after the judge read the sentence of life in prison -- my goodness -- witnesses say words were exchanged between the families of the convicted killer and the victim the fight began outside the courtroom, lasted for about three minutes. look at people trying to get others under control there. up to 30 people were involved here. police made about eight arrests, as well. my goodness. all right, we just told you about a possible deal that could determine who gets custody of

ground. the stunt goes wrong when the pilot can't pull up in time. this plane is going to cross an access road -- look at that. collide with a car, slamming it right into a nearby field. it didn't hit the people that were on that road, as well there was a family inside that car. do you believe no one was seriously hurt? and the pilot is okay, as well. local police released a statement saying, quote, clearly guardian angels had a hand in the outcome here. for a second day in a row, a southwest passenger jet makes an emergency landing. this time, it's flight 3238. it came in from st. louis. touched down safely in orlando, which was the destination. a warning light came on that suggested there may be a fire on board. inspectors did not find any damage. these buses transported the 126 passengers and five crew members from that plane to the terminal. and thankfully, no injuries have been reported. meanwhile, southwest says

its completed immediate inspections on its fleet of 737 300 aircraft, nearly lly 200 pl. those were announced after a one foot by one foot hole opened up in flight on a southwest jet, at 30,000 feet, which caused the cabin to lose pressure. the plane was carrying 126 passengers, had to make an emergency landing last night. >> we were seated about two rows back from the wing, and about four rows back, you heard this loud rush, and your ears popped, and then we looked back and you could tell that part of the inside was trying to pull out, and it was -- it was crazy. and then the masks dropped. i put mine on, then put them on my kids, and so, it was just crazy, though. you are doing, especially as a parent, you are doing a lot of talking, and calming, and that kind of thing, and how you've

never gone through this before. >> thankfully, nobody was hurt in that case, either. a southwest representative says there are no delays or cancellations due to that incident from yesterday. remember this, a pennsylvania swim club accused of racism? well, it could be facing a federal discrimination lawsuit. an attorney for this day camp that was asked to leave, says he expects to file the suit within a week. he wants the entire club board to resign. the day camp said it was kicked out because the kids are mostly minor tips the club says the pool was overcrowded that day and invited them back, but the camp said thanks but no thanks. massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to restore $4 million in state funding for two boston area zoos. now the state house speaker says he believes the legislature can override any veto by the governor. the group that runs the zoos says it is optimistic. zoo new england raised some eyebrows here, and the governor's ire when it suggested

budget cuts may force it to euthanize animals. the governor says state money would be better spent on other programs and thinks the zoos could find other funding. the master mind behind the largest ponzi scheme ever, bernard madoff, has arrived at a federal prison in north carolina. he was actually held overnight at a medium security prison in atlanta. there he is, highlighted. this is a detention center for prisoners that are being transferred to other facilities. the atlanta prison once housed charles ponzi. madoff's lawyer requested he be locked up somewhere near new york to be close to his family. well, investors were hoping the bulls would show up after monday's rally. allison cossack is with us to wrap up the trading day. no bull sightings? >> reporter: we saw a few. stocks spent the day searching

60% of those cuts will happen in florida, site of most shuttle launchings and landings. there are just eight missions left in the plan, which is scheduled to end in september next year. the shuttle has been delayed five times because of weather and technical issues. launch is now set for tomorrow night. we're getting a correction from the office of first lady michelle obama we want to share with you, now saying that her father is not buried at an illinois cemetery that's been desecrated. earlier today, mrs. obama's staff said frazier robinson iii will buried near chicago at burr oak ceremony. a correction was issues later, though. four former workers at that historic black cemetery are accused of digging up bodies and reselling plots. cook county officials plan to increase inspections at 28 cemeteries to four times a year, rather than just once. the illinois comptroller is freezing the trust funds of the

company that owns burr oak. we can know what killed michael jackson within the next week. a los angeles county coroner's official says some results from toxicology tests are in and saying the remaining results are expected this week or early next week. now, those tests determine what substances were in jackson's body when he died. authorities are looking into claims that he took large amounts of prescription drugs. the lawyer for jackson's ex-wife is denies reports of a custody deal. an attorney for debbie rowe calls a report false that she agreed to take $4 million not to challenge katherine jackson for custody. a source close to the family tells cnn that jackson's attorney is trying to hammer out some sort of an agreement with the woman you see there, debbie rowe. reportedly the family wants rowe to give up any rights to her two kids with jackson. child custody court hearing was pushed back from yesterday to

next monday, and remember, jackson does have temporary guardianship of the kids for now. update for you on last week's memorial for jackson. l.a.'s mayor says the city will pay for services related to the memorial. police, traffic control, other services cost an estimated $1.4 million. the city council is set to review the costs. the mayor called a website asking for donations ridiculous there's no word that the $35,000 raised will be returned to donors. been to an air show? you know the stunts you get to see. well, when things go wrong, they get pretty scary pretty fast. what happened at the end of this potentially deadly spy rat.

the vandals used a marker and they may have to hire a private contractor to get the sign cleaned up. two weeks ago, it went into the national registered of historic places. massachusetts lawmakers are hoping to restore $the million if state funding for two boston zoos. he believes the legislature can override any veto by governor deval patrick. the group says they are optimistic. the zoo raised eyebrows when they suggested budget cuts may force them to euthanize animals. patrick says no animals will be killed on his watch, but he believes state planning would be better spent on better programs that thinks the zoo should find other funding. 500 athletes meet up to prove life doesn't end in a wheelchair, it simpb simply changes. the national wheelchair games underway. this year it has a bit of an international flavor. check out the athletes who do it all so well while sitting down. they are an inspiration.
