a funeral is taking place right now for byrd and melanie billings. the florida couple was gunned down while their children were nearby. what the family is saying about the attack and investigation this morning. and take a look at this surveillance video from a hotel that jakarta, indonesia. authorities believe this suspected suicide bomber just a few seconds later detonated explosives. there's tennis elbow. how about texter's thumb? a repetitive stress injury. doctors say a lot of kids could suffer from it. oh, admit it, you're ready for the weekend, aren't you?
12:01 pm
i'm christi paul and so glad to be sharing friday with you. thank you for being with us. the funeral is just getting under way for byrd and melanie billings, the florida couple who were gunned down in a home invasion/robbery last week. but before the funeral, the billings family actually made an announcement. ed lavandera is at the escambia county sheriff's office. ed, it seems unusual. we don't oftentimes see a family coming out half an hour before a funeral talking to the press. >> well, yeah. and actually, the family attorney rather upstaging, essentially, this funeral service, making some news as to what a lot of people are speculating about and wondering about as to -- excuse me -- what exactly was inside the safe that authorities have recovered and have been processing. the family attorney didn't take any questions, but she made this statement about what was inside that safe. >> as a result of the intense speculation regarding the motive of the crime, i have been
12:02 pm
authorized to tell you that the safe that was removed from the billings' home contained only children's prescription medications, important family documents, and some jewelry of sentimental value. hopefully, this will put to rest the intense speculation and rumors that are swirling about the billings' family. >> and some background to exactly what's going on here, christi. there's been a great deal of sensitivity and frustration on behalf of what we presume is the family, and that's been channeled to us through this family attorney, about the talk of the federal agency involvement in this murder investigation, specifically the dea involvement in this case. we were told by the family attorney for several days ago that it was not true that the dea was investigating even though we had been told on the record by dea officials themselves that they were
12:03 pm
indeed -- had indeed been called into the case. essentially, i think what's going on here is that family members are very sensitive to the fact that people are linking any kind of dea involvement to byrd and melanie billings. and authorities here are saying that those agencies were called in more to check the background and the involvement in the dealings of these suspects. so, there's a great deal of sensitivity on behalf of the family members, specifically this family attorney, and she's making those comments just as family members and friends arriving at the church here in pensacola this morning for funeral services. there was a viewing last night. no cameras allowed inside the funeral service, so the church there is where you see funeral services are being held this morning. and we understand that several of the older siblings of byrd and melanie billings will be speaking as well as other friends here this afternoon in memorializing this couple here in pensacola. christi? >> very good point to remember. we need to be cognizant of the fact that people lost family
12:04 pm
members here and we need to be very respectful of that. i do have one question regarding what the attorney had said. as i understand it, and please correct me if i'm wrong, the safe was found as one of the things that had been taken from the home, so i guess you would kind of think, well, couldn't they have taken something out of the safe, these suspects, before it was recovered? and it makes you wonder, are more arrests on the way or have they really wrapped up everything up now? >> reporter: well, she just simply made ta statement, didn't answer any questions. obviously, you're correct. this is the next question, even though that is what was found, was there something else that was taken out of there before it was -- during the process of getting in touch with the state attorney to kind of get their reaction to it, got the quick reaction from the sheriff here and all they're saying is they're deferring comments about whether or not this attorney's statements about what was in the safe is, indeed, accurate.
12:05 pm
but the sheriff here won't react to it, leaving those comments up to the state attorney. those officials had been saying all along they did not want to get into what was in the content of those safes because that would, in their view, hurt their prosecution in this case. that's something they wanted to keep very close to the vest. so, i can't imagine that sheriff's officials here and prosecutors are very thrilled that the family attorney has come out and made these statements. every indication we have gotten is that was the kind of information they wanted to keep close to the vest. >> interesting. all right. certainly understand they don't want to compromise the situation there. ed lavandera, thank you so much for bringing us up to speed, as always. another big story we're watching today. take a look at this surveillance video. at least six people are dead from bomb blasts that hit two luxury hotels in jakarta, indonesia, and this is video from inside one of those hotels, the jw marriott. that unidentified man seen walking through the hotel lobby with a suitcase, you see him
12:06 pm
seconds later as he disappears into that hallway, watch, the bomb goes off. investigators say suicide bombers checked in as guests prior to carrying out these coordinated attacks. more than 50 people were wounded, including eight americans. the blast occurred almost simultaneously at the marriott and the ritz-carlton. an unexploded bomb, though, was also found on the 18th floor of one of those hotels. police say it's still unclear what group is behind the attack, but of course as we circumstance that will video, we once perhaps if that man they focus on was one of those suicide bombers. now, i-reporter greg wollstencraft was on the scene minutes before the explosion, but he spoke with our sister network, cnn international, about what he saw. >> just got back to my hotel room and there was a huge explosi explosion. i looked out the window, and the first explosion was at the marriott. there was a big plume of black and brown smoke. since i work for one of the
12:07 pm
local networks and tv, i ran downstairs to see what it was all about. as i got down to the ground floor, there was another huge explosion at the ritz-carlton. when i got over to the ritz-carlton, there was smoke billowing out of the building, all over the place, and all the windows were blown out on the street side quite extensively with smoke. and there was already some people starting to move outside. and i was going to go up towards the driveway towards the lobby, and all the windows were blown out on the lobby side as well. i was going to go into the restaurant and have a look around, and having stayed in the hotel many times, there was just total devastation and you couldn't even recognize it from what it was before. i did see one mutilated body on the floor, which could have actually been one of the suicide bombers, and i did see some other people getting escorted out with minor injuries. >> we want to thank him for sharing what he saw in his
