12:30 pm
welcome back to hln, 12:30 eastern time, we have some breaking news and we want to get you caught up on a number of new developments on the michael jackson investigation. the focus once again is jackson's personal doctor. we have live pictures for you, police agents, they are raiding his home. and his las vegas office of dr. conrad murray. we have seen a whole lot of activity here in the past hour. authorities going in and out of that huge complex on the left hand side of your screen. that is his office, it has been closed sometime, though. it has not been open, it was not open today. closed for several weeks. on the right hand side of your screen, you see that home in the gated community, they are searching that. murray was with michael jackson when he died last month. he has not been charged, though.
12:31 pm
now, all of this comes amid new allegations against dr. murray. a source close to this investigation tells our sister network cnn that murray administered the drug that authorities say may have killed michael jackson. the source says that murray allegedly gave michael jackson the anesthetic propofol, commonly known as diprivan in the 24 hours right before michael jackson's death. well, a former prosecutor spoke about the case. here he is. >> well, he faces potential manslaughter charges. you know, this is an extremely dangerous drug. it's normally administered only in a hospital setting with ventilation equipment available in case something goes wrong with a patient. if he was administering a drug in michael jackson's house to help him sleep, i think it's clearly gross negligence and probably would constitute a crime under california law. >> his attorneys say they're not commenting on quote rumors, innuendo and unnamed sources. they have said the doctor never gave michael jackson anything
12:32 pm
that should've killed him. court documents show authorities searched the doctor's office in houston. you remember that, it happened, i believe, on june 22nd. and a storage unit last week. the l. a.c.o.r.a. coroner's offe issued as early as this week. we, of course, are following this breaking news for you. also breaking today, judge sonia sotomayor is closer to becoming the first latina member of the supreme court. at the top of the hour, the senate judiciary committee approved her nomination. sending it to the full senate for a vote next week. brianna keilar with the latest now from capitol hill. and this was almost the party line vote, was it not? >> one vote off being a party line vote. it certainly was, susan, and i want to show you this vote as it happened moments ago. keep an eye out for lindsay graham, the only senator on the judiciary committee who crossed the aisle in his vote. >> the clerk will call the roll of the nomination of sonia
12:33 pm
sotomayor to be justice of the u.s. supreme court. >> aye. >> aye. >> aye. >> aye. >> mr. franken? >> no. >> no. >> mr. hatch? >> no. >> no, by proxy. >> no, by proxy. >> the nominee has been approved by the committee, the name will be sent to the full senate for its action. >> democrats and republicans very divided on the senate
12:34 pm
judiciary committee even though republicans on the committee admitted when you look at sonia sotomayor's record being on the federal bench that it was well within the mainstream. they said some of the things she said, for instance, that wise latina comment didn't sit well with them and they aren't convinced her belief when she makes decisions on the supreme court. but susan, lindsey graham what he said defending his vote for her, elections have consequences, even though he wouldn't have picked sonia sotomayor, he said president obama won the election, and so he thinks he gets -- lindsey graham thinks he's entitled to his pick. >> he is. was that division expected, brianna? >> reporter: it certainly was and we've seen these supreme court nominations, this process over the last few years become more and more divided. a bit of this was pay back for how divided the senate was when it came to the nomination of
12:35 pm
supreme court chief justice john roberts, but especially samuel alito. he really did not get much democratic support. and then susan, the other thing you have to consider, there are a lot of single issue groups out there like the national rifle association, like anti-same sex marriage, pro-family groups, groups that are pro-life. and what they do is they keep score cards on these members of congress and they look at how they vote on things, the nra, for instance, says -- said last week, a vote against or vote for sonia sotomayor is essentially in our consideration a vote against second amendment gun rights and so we are going to score you accordingly. so these republicans who maybe were tempted to vote for sonia sotomayor because they're trying to pull in hispanic voters into the tent, they're squeezed on the other end by the groups they're so much aligned with who are pressuring them to vote no on sonia sotomayor. >> that's very interesting, very interesting point. live in washington. thanks.
12:36 pm

can do all team activities and also possibly start playing in games by week six. but so far, no team has shown interest and some teams have even said they don't want him. they won't sign him. sports attorney ryan smith says that's a huge problem for vick. >> that's going to be a real challenge. and i think for at least for now he's going to have trouble finding a team. a lot of people out there are saying give him a chance, the moment he walks out on the field, the attention for the team will be focussed on him rather than on the team's development, and then throughout, if you're going to his game, you're going to have to pass by peta protestors and all kinds of other people trying to tell you what he did. if he goes out and changes the way people view him, if he becomes a spokesman, i think that's important, maybe it'll be michael vick, convicted dog felon, but look at how he's changed his life. >> vick served 18 months for running a dog fighting ring, now he's out of prison. we're not done with this conversation.

4:11 pm
sign him, he can practice and play in the final two pre-season games. during the regular season he can do all team activities and possibly start playing by maybe week six, playing real games. so far, no team has shown interest. some teams have even stated we're not going to touch him. of course you know vick served 18 months for running a dog fighting ring. some of you say michael vick deserves a second chance. others strongly disagree. let's get to the phones and talk about this. amy is calling from san diego. amy, what do you think about michael vick being back in the nfl? >> caller: well, i'm a huge football fan and waist a michael vick fan before finding out what a monster he is. he was found guilty not just of dog fighting but torturing dogs to death, hanging, electrical execution, drowning. i just don't believe someone capable of doing that can be cured. and for those who believe he deserves to be reinstated, remember tonya harding?
