plane collided in the hudson river mere manhattan. mayor michael bloomberg says authorities do not believe the crash was survivable. nine people were involved, three on the plane, six in the helicopter. so far two bodies have been recovered, but there is question on whether one of those was from the crash. drivers are having difficulty with the recovery operation because of the visibility. it's in the hudson right now. it's extremely low, hard to see. some wreckage has been found at a depth of about 30 feet. let's get to the phone, someone who witnessed the crash as it happened. david wolf joins us from hoboken, new jersey. tell us what you saw. >> i was sitting on the pier from the hoboken side. i was watching the helicopter, a small tourist-type helicopter that is quite common to see. i was following it. out of the side of my vision i

saw a small, private airplane coming from the side and i saw the two of them smack into each other and a giant puff of smoke, then the wings flew off. then just the debris quickly fell into the water. >> i imagine there are a million things going through your head at that moment. first of all, did i just see what i really think i saw? what were you thinking? what went through your mind at that point? >> yeah. it all flashed within two seconds. i was like, oh, my god, am i really seeing this? at some point when i saw the puff of smoke or the explosion come out, i definitely screamed. then i thought, okay, maybe it's an emergency situation. what do i need to do? i realized there was nothing to be done. it was so fast and everything just fell in pieces. i knew there wasn't anything to do. >> what happened next at that point? were you thinking there might be

survivors in this? you were there. tell us what you saw. >> where the plane and helicopter landed, my view was blocked. then i started walking over towards where the scene was. by the time i got there a few hundred -- it was maybe a minute or two later. maybe a few minutes later. i don't know. there were rescue crafts already there. it was clear to people that it was a rescue, there probably wasn't much rescuing to be done at that point. >> dave, thank you so much. i am sure this is startling, not something you expected to see. we appreciate your account. this air space over the hudson river here around new york city is typically crowded with both tourists and other small aircraft traffic. police say another helicopter pilot saw the crash was about to happen and tried to radio an alert to the pilot. the warning either wasn't heard or didn't come in time.

aerobics class in a pittsburgh fitness gym when they were gunned down. a texas man convicted to life in prison for a sexual assault may not have committed the crime. he's free after serving 23 years behind bars. a judge ordered him released. bloodstains on the alleged victims plants could not have come from him. >> i told people who knew me in prison that i was innocent. when you in prison you tell the same story. everybody -- everybody say that. i used to be mad, you know, but like -- you know, the past is the past. >> he's the sixth convicted man released after results from the houston police department crime lab were challenged. the district attorney is

reviewing more than 150 cases because of allegations of impropriety and inaccurate test results from the lab. a camping trip for a mother and son turned deadly for the 11-year-old boy. he and his mom ventured into death valley a week ago on what was supposed to be an overnight trip. they along with their dog was found. their jeep cherokee was buried up to its axles in sand. the initial rescue r say the su died days before she left. she fixed a flat tire and continued into death valley depending on gps directions. death valley is the average size of connecticut and the average temperature is 106 degrees. check out this video here. an alleged robber is getting dragged by his own getaway car. he led them on a three-mile chase after snatching someone's purse. he opened the door to ditch the

ride and run, but his leg got tangled up in his seat belt. the car kept rolling with most of his body dragging underneath. >> believe it or not, that frequently happens. that frequently happens. generally they stop the car before they get out and not let it keep rolling. he was doing maybe ten miles per hour. still, he went up on a curve. >> the man ended up with a broken leg. the open door smashed him in the head. he was later charged with armed robbery and fleeing police. people in north texas are learning their homes are not on secure footing as they thought. severe heat and heavy rain are causing some foundation homes to crack. that's leaving homeowners with an expensive problem to pair. some say their windows are now out of alignment and their doors won't lock. experts say the soil has a lot of clay in it, which means it can drastically shrink in the heat and substantially expand in the rain.

people in hawaii are getting ready for hurricane felicia. they say the storm will be downgraded to a tropical storm or tropical depression by the time it reaches the island. at one point it had become a category 4 storm, but has been losing strength as it began traveling over colder waters. meanwhile, a typhoon has dumped heavy rain on the island of taiwan. this storm is blamed in the death of ten people in the philippines, including three french tourists who were swept away in flood waters. some town halls on health care reform are getting fierce. ies health care stirring up such debate?

the proposed plan down-right evil. in the post, she warned americans they may have to stand in front of an obama death panel to prove they are worthy of health care. president obama once again urged congress to pass health carry form and talked about the misconceptions about the plan. >> let me explain what reform will mean for you. let me start by dispelling the outlandish rumors that it will promote utah neighs euthanasia or cut medicaid or take over health care. that is simply not true. it's not about putting government in charge of your health insurance, it's about putting you in charge of your health insurance. under the reforms we seek, if you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. if you like your health care plan, you can keep your health care plan. while reform is obviously essential for the 46 million americans who don't have health insurance, it will provide more stability and security for the

hundreds of millions who do. >> congress is on a month long summer vacation. lawmakers promised to take up the legislation when they return. many of those law makers will spend part of the recess talking to their constituents about health care. so far town hall meetings have been a flash point and many turning ugly. why is it pushing the wrong buttons for people? >> when it comes to these demonstrations we've seen at town halls, are they organized or are they organic? i guess it's a little bit of both. let's start with the organized. some of the advocacy groups that oppose the health care proposals, they are posted where and when town halls are being held and posting ideas on what to say and how to protest. at the same time it's organic, as well. there are a lot of people who do

not like the president's health care proposals. they are showing up on their own. in our national poll we found that people oppose to the president's health care plan are much more likely to attend these town halls than people who support the president's plan. we are seeing the democratic groups on the left now reacting to what's been happening in the past week. they may be taking a page from the right because they are reaching out trying to mobilize their people to get out to these town halls and speak out in favor of the president's plan. one thing though, not all these town halls have been unruly. this was from donna edwards' down hall in maryland just the other day. there were tough questions for the congresswoman, but there was no disruptions and it was a civil affair. so what do people think about health care? our new cnn poll showed one thing that is interesting. overwhelmingly people think change is needed because costs are too high.

also we need to ensure all the millions of americans who don't have health insurance. people overwhelmingly said, you know what? we like the health care coverage we have right now. one other thing that's important. take a look at this number. americans are divided on the president's health care plan. 50% say yes, i like it. 45% oppose it. a big division there. maybe that's playing out at these town halls across the country. beatles fans come together to celebrate 40 years of abbey road. hundreds swarmed to london's abbey road crosswalk where the fab four strolled across the street. that was the cover shot of their last album. it's been imitated over the years. today was no exception. a trivia band dressed just like the beatles of yesteryear recreated the cover for a sea of people capturing the moment.
