a small plane collideed with a helicopter, both fell into the hudson river. new york mayor michael bloomberg says it's believed all of the nine people on both aircraft were killed. here is how witnesses described the crash. >> there was a plane, a small plane like a cessna cutting back towards new jersey side. helicopter heading southbound about 1100, 1200 feet. the plane rolled into the helicopter, hit the side of it of the helicopter went straight in the water. there was a poof of smoke and a bang. it went further down hit the water by the w hotel and came down, a couple of pieces. >> what did you think when you saw it. >> tragic, bad. you look up and you see all the planes going around here and it's hectic. unfortunately this thing happens. the fact that it does happen -- it doesn't happen more often is

crazy. >> it was turning, went down first. about three, four seconds later, i saw the wing for helicopters. there's no wing for helicopters, it was the rotor blade. if this was the head, it went like this. it was quick. i see a lot of people try to come and rescue. lots of boats try to drive towards the helicopter. i was very shocked. i was screaming. two of us started calling 911. >> a law enforcement source tells us the chopper wreck was found in 30 feet of water while the plane is believed to be even deeper. sonar identified a possible third debris field. we know that the hudson river is an extremely difficult river to dive in. currents are very difficult. you have to contend with tides

and the ability to see is limited. two to three feet at most. it's a difficult working environment, you have to worry about plane safety. >> the chopper had five tourists and a pilot. more on the latest with this search throughout the day. forty inmates in the hospital following a prison riot here in california. a spokesman says some of the injuries are life threatening of the violence broke out haas night at the california institution for men. at least one unit, which can house up to 200 inmates was set on fire. the "l. a. times" said the inmates self-evacuated into the yard. it's not clear if they all made it out of the building. a public hearing for robert manuel, the boy's body found in a canal last weechblgt he disappeared after leaving his mother's apartment on july 28th.

police say they are investigating his death as a homicide they also say there's no evidence he was abducted by a stranger. manuel was visiting his mother on the night he disappeared. president obama is visiting mexico for a two-day summit. he's going to meet with leaders on issues impacting south america. clean energy and the economic crisis are also top priorities. all three countries have strong economic ties to the north american free trade agreement. canada and mexico says 80% of their exports to the u.s. . a militant commander in the afghanistan says the taliban is waiting for a u.s. response before deciding on the fate of a captured u.s. soldier. this is the first public comment about 23-year-old barack obama bergdahl since he was seen last month of the taliban leader made

a request for a return. he wouldn't elaborate. a military spokeswoman refused to comment saying they wouldn't do anything to compromise efforts to recover him. a strong earthquake shook japan earlier today. authorities say there was a 6.9 magnitude quake that jolted tokyo and surrounding areas in eastern japan. a u.s. geological logged it at 7.$1.people who felt it in tokyo said it rattled walls and furniture. so far no reports of injuries or damage. people in parts of minneapolis are cleaning up after getting slammed by powerful thunderstorm. they uprooted trees here, snapped power line and blew off roofs. several tornadoes were reported. one man said fierce winds ripped apart his garage and blew away his boat. at one point 10,000 people lost power. there are no reports of any injuries. authorities in hawaii are beginning to close some beaches

the kennedy family continues to gather at a massachusetts hospital where eunice kennedy shriver is listed in critical but stable condition. it's still unclear why she went to the hospital. shriver had a series of strokes in recent years. she's best known as the founder of the special olympics which helps millions of people with disabilities worldwide. her daughter, maria shriver and maria's husband, arnold schwarzenegger, have also been at the hospital. police are getting new clues about the murder of a couple known for adopting special needs kids. they are coming from a man arrested last week. sean callebs reports investigators are looking at business debt and connections to the mexican mafia. >> reporter: 61-year-old henry "cab" tice was a long time friend and business associate of byrd and melanie billings according to the escambia county sheriff david morgan. >> they were business partners in a series of businesses, in a finance company that financed

cars and other things and a couple of small car dealerships. >> reporter: the relationship soured. tice owed billings $30,000, according to the sheriff, and was arrested on writing bad checks to the billings. the sheriff also says he's not ruling out that the billings murders could be a contract hit. another intriguing connection, tice was close to patrick gonzalez jr., the man authorities portray as the ringleader in the mur of the florida couple that adopted 13 children, many with special needs. >> he's had an ongoing relationship, he described it as a father and son relationship where they spoke on a daily business. >> reporter: the sheriff says he's surprised by information tice volunteered like a connection to organized crime. >> he affirmed that because he got into financial trouble in the business and he needed some money that he made connections

with what he referred to as the mexican mafia and secured a loan from them in order for the business not to fail. >> reporter: cnn was unable to locate tice but in an interview with nbc, he said he had nothing to do with the killing. >> anybody say that i had anything to do with the murder of bud or melanie is a liar. >> reporter: the billings family issued a statement saying we have faith sheriff morgan will be diligent in determining whether there's any connection with cab tice and the murders. authorities say the big break in this case came when someone involved in the murders failed to turn off the security system. cameras rolled as the gang roamed the house and caught images of the suspects and a red van leaving the house. >> it would not be unrealistic to assume that mr. tice was aware of a security system. he had been in the home many times. will at the office mr. billings was known to pull up on his security system his home system so he could observe the children

and how the home life is going. >> tice had been working at this car dealership and apparently living there as well. tice has since been fired and told to move on. he frequently goes to mexico for business dealings and authorities say he also travels to columbia where he has a wife or a girlfriend. while he remains free on bond the sheriff has told tice not to leave the area. sean callebs, cnn, pensacola, florida. 54 years ago today the u.s. dropped an tom k bomb on nagasaki. it pushed them to surrender and end world war ii. people there observed a moment of silence today while a large veil in nagasaki peace park. the mayor spoke calling for an end to nuclear weapons. the attack on nagasaki three days after one on hiroshima.

may be enduring a lot more pain and spending a lot more money than necessary. that report published in the journal for surgeons says 40% of female patients had open surgical biopsies, despite guidelines that say a needle biopsy is just as good for evaluating. >> the state-of-the-art is needle biopsy. it's far less expensive, hurts less, doesn't cause significant scarring. >> which is why some doctors are crying foul and pointing fingers. >> here is why it's happening. unfortunately many of these patients are controlled by surgeons. it may be these surgeons do not know how to do needle biopsies or do not have the skill to do it. so rather than refer the patient to somebody who can do it they do an open surgical biopsy, which is ten years behind the times. >> surgical biopsies cost almost twice as much as needle

he was arrested thursday on a year-old charge of writing $17,000 in bad checks to the billings. he is not ruling out the billings' murders could be a contract hit. another intriguing connection, tice, according to the sheriff, was also close to patrick gonzalez jr., the man authorities portray as the ringleader in the murders of the florida couple who adopted 13 children, many with special needs. >> he's had an ongoing relationship with patrick gonzalez jr. as he described it a father and son relationship where they spoke on a daily basis. >> reporter: the sheriff says he's surprised by information that tice volunteered, like a connection to organized crime. >> he affirmed that because he had got into financial trouble in the business and he needed some money that he made connections with what he referred to as the mexican mafia and secured the loan from them in order for the business not to fail. >> reporter: cnn was unable to locate tice, but in an interview with nbc, he said he had nothing

to do with the killings. >> that i had anything to do with the murder of byrd or melanie is a liar. >> reporter: the billings' family issued a statement saying we have faith that sheriff morgan will be diligent in determining whether there is any connection between cab tice and the murders. authorities say the big break in the case came when someone involved in the murders failed to turn off the billings' security system. cameras rolled as the gang roamed the billings' house and caught images of the suspect in a red van leaving the house. >> it would not be unrealistic to assume that mr. tice was aware of the security system. he had been in the home many times. also at the office, mr. billings was known to pull up on his computer system his security system so he could observe the home. >> reporter: tice was working at this car dealership and apparently living there since. tice has been fired and was told

helicopter yesterday. both aircrafts fell into the hudson river here. michael bloomberg said it is believed that all of the nine people on both aircraft were killed. now, here's how witnesses describe the crash. >> there was a small plane like a cessna cutting back towards new jersey side and helicopter heading southbound about 1,100, 1,200 feet. the plane rolled into the helicopter and hit the side of it. the helicopter went straight down in the water. like a poof of smoke and a bang and the plane went further down and hit the water by the w. hotel. came down in a couple pieces. pretty bad. >> what was your thought when you saw it? >> tragic, bad, you know. the fact that it happened here. but you look up and you see all the planes going around here and it's kind of hectic. so, surprise it didn't -- unfortunately, this thing happens but, you know, the fact that it does happen, it doesn't happen more often is just kind of crazy. >> i was turning and then the

head went down first and then about three, four seconds later i thought it was a wing of the helicopter, but there's no wing for helicopters so probably the rotor blade. so, if this is the head, i think it went down like this. so, it was quick. i see a lot of people come and start trying to rescue and then lots of boats start to drive towards the helicopter. i was just very shocked and i think i was screaming for a few seconds and then two of us we started calling 911. >> a law enforcement source tells us that the chopper wreckage was found in about 30 feet of water while the plane is even deeper. sonar has also identified a possible third debris field. >> we know that the hudson river is an extremely difficult river to dive in. currents are very difficult. you have to contend with tides

river here. they want to know what the control tower was telling the plane after it took off. some of the wreckage was removed from the river today. the ntsb is also asking anyone with video or pictures to come forward. new york mayor michael bloomberg says that a fifth body was found today and four more bodies still have yet to be recovered. susan candiotti has more from the scene. >> reporter: divers continue to be hard at work, as they have for the past several hours. as you've noted, they've already recovered three more bodies for a total of five, so five out of nine victim vbs brought up in the bottom of the hudson river at this time. the bodies recover sod far, those victims are believed to have come from the helicopter wreckage, because that is the aircraft that authorities believe they have been able to locate and are convinced of that, as a matter of fact, at the bottom of the hudson river. so far, they continue to look for any sign of that small plane that was carrying three people, the pilot, his brother, and that

brother's son, in other words, the nephew of the pilot. still trying to locate that using all kinds of methods including sonar to try to determine exactly where that is. also earlier, as we have mentioned, they've brought up both a small piece of the helicopter and a much larger piece which was picked up with cranes. and they moved that piece over to a pier in the area for further examination. of course, identification of the bodies, of the victims still has to be done, and that's going to be a difficult procedure. >> yeah, and on that note, most of the italian tourists have left, but some have stayed behind to help identify the dead. this is the city's worst air disaster since a 2001 plane crash in between killed 265 people. 40 inmates are in the hospital following a prison riot in california. a spokesman says some of the injuries are life-threatening. the violence broke out last night at the california

typhoon morakot blew ashore along china's east coast this morning packing 74-mile-per-hour winds and bringing torrential rains. nearly a million people were evacuated ahead of this storm. now, keep your eyes on this red building here. some of the worst devastation from morakot happened in taiwan. watch the building go there. this is some of the worst flooding in 50 years. cannot believe these pictures. they're really something else. some areas in the southern part of the island got an incredible 80 inches of rain. you see people being rescued here. at least two people were killed in taiwan, but dozens are still missing and this feared dead. 64 years ago today, the u.s. dropped an atomic bomb on the city of nagasaki. the attack pushed the japanese government to surrender and end the pacific arm of world war ii. [ bell tolling ] people there observed a moment of silence today while a large bell in nagasaki's peace park was rung repeatedly.

the mayor also spoke, calling for an end to nuclear weapons. the attack on nagasaki came three days after one on hiroshima. 140,000 people were killed or died within months after that bombing. scientists say that the world's glaciers are melting away at an alarming rate and they warn if this trend continues it could lead people to take desperate measures.
