hall meetings take center stage. so far tempers haven't boiled over but people across the country are fired up over this issue. one town hall meeting was moderated by senator chuck grassley of iowa this morning. >> in a dumb southern iowa redneck and i see nowhere in the constitution where health care is a right, not even the general welfare clause. fined if they don't take insurance does not promote general welfare. messing with mead care, the largest seen doesn't promote general welfare. fining small businesses if they do not cover employees does not promote general welfare. i want proof out of washington, i want to hear it from obama, pelosi and company, how this is about we the people and not about taking money out of the free enterprise capitalistic system that made us a great

country and putting it in government pockets. >> grassley is the ranking republican on the senate finance committee, deeply involved obviously in health care reform bargaining process. let's talk about president obama, because he's fighting, one of the ones calling those health care reforms scare tactics head on. at a town hall in portsmouth, new hampshire, it was a lot like a campaign rally. the president accused special interest to scare and mislead people. outside the forum, protesters had signs that called him a socialist and protested what they see as a bigger government role in health care. president obama plans more town halls. the white house has launch add weshz to counter critics. during the town hall, president obama says we have the aarp on board. the aarp which has 45 million or 50 says not so fast.

received hate mail, death threats and offensive faxes since the public debate on health care began. all right. let's get to that other story we've been talking about today. a famous college basketball coach named as the target of an alleged $10 million extortion scheme. rick pitino told police, yeah, he did have sex with the woman accused of trying to extort money from him. according to the louisville courier journal, pitino, who is married, says he and the woman met and had sex in a restaurant back in 2003. when she told him two weeks later she was pregnant, he says he paid her $3,000 to get an abortion. on the other side of the ticket, the woman filed rape charges against pitino but did so just last month after she was charged with extortion. she's pleaded not guilty to those extortion charges but police say her story has been too inconsistent to formally charge pitino. police in texas arrest add u.s. soldier who they say was

working as a hit man for a mexican drug cartel. 18-year-old private first class michael jackson apodaca was one of three men arrested. they are suspects in the shooting of an informant working for the u.s. . search forego a five-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who disappeared monday. please take a good look at this. his foster father, that's who they are looking for, his father said he left the boy outside the shoe store where his fiance, the boy's aunt, worked. when he went back outside, he was gone. here is the thing. officers say he couldn't have gotten far on his own since he wears leg braces. so far no witnesses have come forward to say they saw the boy around the shoe store. >> it is very difficult for me to believe, just applying common sense, that a five-year-old little boy who has cerebral palsy, braces on both legs, he

can barely walk could just walk away from the car and get lost. i don't see -- how could others not see him being taken from that car? >> that's right, nancy. that's a very good question. so police are trying to see if, in fact, little hasani campbell was taken away from the b mcht w that belonged to his foster parent. we have now learned it was his foster dad trying to drop him off at his biological aunt's shoe store. the fact that no one saw him walking around or being kidnapped is of grave concern. we don't know where he is at this moment but police are investigating, nancy. >> obviously an emergency there as they look for that little boy. a little brought search dogs to his home yesterday, in fact. they removed what and to be his computer. hasani's aunt got custody of him when her sister couldn't take care of him. she and her fiance are in the process of legally adopting him. two people went to the hospital after this helicopter

crashed just north of atlanta this morning. local media reports the chopper went down behind a row of houses as you can see there. so far no report on what may have caused that crash. also a small plane crashed into a stream outside suffolk, new jersey. it happened shortly after takeoff. the two men were hospitalized after the accident. authorities saying one of them may have a broken leg. divers in the hudson river have recovered the last two bodies from the air crash between a helicopter and plane. they were pulled from the river yesterday. they said investigators will check whether the plane's controls and engine were working before the crash. they will also interview flight controllers in new jersey to try to piece together just what happened here. eleven years ago the earth's population stood at 6 billion. a research group says by next year it could hit 7 billion.

fired the shot that killed this man three months ago outside his home in an upscale el paso neighborhood of the shooting victim was a mid level member of the juarez drug cartel but also an informant for american federal a little. >> what we do feel is this was retribution for the fact that the deceased person had pretty much gotten the person in trouble in juarez, this was retribution for the arrest. >> according to court documents he was hired and paid by doppler radar -- dorado, a member of the cartel. he paid him because he discovered the victim was talking to american authorities. >> i want to stress this was a payback situation and not something that's an ongoing type of battle like you see in mexico right now. so a whole lot different.

violent episodes in juarez, a lot of times innocents have fallen victim to gunbattles. clearly a cause for concern in el paso. >> two things. do we know how much they were paid for this hit? secondly, they say it's not a bigger problem in el paso, but what about elsewhere? >> as far as how much apodaca and others are paid, police in el paso are saying they believe it's up near $10,000 for carrying out this hit. as far as the wider problem here, i've seen anecdotally covering a lot of these stories in the last year, border violence, you're saying more and more cases of you might hear about a soldier in a border town who turned a blind eye to people smuggling humans or drugs, various county officials, state officials along border communities that have been arrested and charged with

i'm jane velez-mitchell and here is my issue. we have to feel for the husband who lost his wife, his young daughter and nieces in that horrific drunk driving accident in new york. his wife was bombed and high when she killed eight people including herself. now her husband's job, finances, all in jeopardy. his surviving son is injured and he's been investigated by child services. it makes you wonder why he ever called that news conference saying the coroner's toxicology report on his wife was just plain wrong, that she could not have been drunk. he made excuses for his wife's actions. all that did was draw attention to this case. denial is a very dangerous thing. but instead of having blinders on, this grieving husband should be asking himself why he didn't see this coming. i'm jane velez-mitchell and

five at first class michael jackson abudaka was one of three men arrested. suspects in a shooting death of a member after cartel working as an informant for the u.s. the fbi and homicide detectives in oakland, california, are searching for a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy that disappeared. campbell's father says he left the boy alone outside of a shoe store. the boy's haunt where she was working. when he got back outside the child was gone. officers say he couldn't have gone far on his own. he wears a leg brace. so far no witnesses have come forward to say that they saw the boy anywhere around the shoe store. >> it is very difficult for me to believe, applying common sense, that 5-year-old little boy who has cerebral palsy, braces on both legs, can barely walk, could just walk away from the car and get lost. i don't see it. how could other not see him being taken from that car.

it is so hard 0 find some food in detroit that it's been referred to as a grass tro nomcal desert. could urban farming be the answer in poppy harlow is in new york not hard to find food there, obviously. some really great restaurants and the like around new york. do tell us what's happening around detroit. >> when you look at detroit, you're looking at a city that's 140 square miles. it's vast. their population has fallen from about 2 million in the 1950s to just about 830,000 today. that leaves a lot of empty abandoned space. that's probably sparked more and more talk about urban farming. i hadn't heard of it till we visited detroit a few weeks ago. essentially large community gardens where people grow their own food. you're looking at one we visited. it's run by a foundation called earth works, about two acres. produces about 7,000 pounds of food every year and it's given access to some healthy food to a

lot of kids in detroit because that access is an issue in the city. there are some independent grocery stores in detroit. i've got to tell you, there is not one major supermarket chain in the entire city anymore. that is a big problem. take a listen. >> detroit has a huge public health issue in terms of healthy food access affecting our communities in a lot of ways. higher rates of diabetes and obesity, heart disease. so having healthy fresh food access being more widespread in the city is really important. >> but the recession, christi, is only making matters worse. detroit's social services agencies are reporting big spikes in food stamp applications and the number of people going to food banks reaching out to get food from the community. >> that is mind boggling there is not a major food chain. >> not one, not one. >> oh, my gosh. i have to wonder, is urban farming enough to feed the whole city? >> probably not, right?

two laser beams at a time. modest goal, right? that's among the day's most popular stories on cnn.com and cnn.com's reggie aqui has been deal, right? >> we use these things all the time, google maps, map quest. at least i have and ever wondered how does this data get into their systems. now we have the answer. these are basically the companies that provide the raw data that eventually make their way to map quest and google maps and that sort of thing. we were able to be go behind the scenes with a company called teleatlas and they use vans that are more unusual with cameras on them, laser beams and those cameras can make a 360 view of the areas that they are mapping and the lead engineer says the goal here is to try and map the entire world. they're not there yet but making

only one group can officially declare the recession over. it has yet to do so. the federal reserve today decided to leave short-term interest rates unchanged at a target rate between zero and a quarter of one percent. the central bank said they will soon end a program aimed at propping up the economy. town hall meetings on health care reform take center stage again today. people across the country are still fired up about the issue. case in point, the town hall meeting today in western maryland. compared to a few nights ago when senator ben cardin was loudly booed and cheered. still momentary outbursts like when the senator addressed care for the elderly. >> working with the same set of facts. in the house -- one of the house committees that has reported a bill, they put a provision in there basically to try to help families make their own decisions rather than government

dictating what happens. it's really for individual choice. that is what type of care do you want? you and your doctors should make the decisions on your health care needs. not the government. the provisions -- the provisions specifically allow you to be reimbursed under medicare for a consultation with your doctor as to what care you want. i can assure you that i'm not going to vote for any bill to cut off care to someone who is in need of care. and wants care. i won't vote for that bill. >> he was referring to claims that the so-called death panels the government might set up will decide who will live or die. chuck grassley of iowa has been holding several town hall meetings of his own across the state. one is scheduled to begin shortly. here's one that got pretty animated. this is in winterset, iowa.

just southwest of des moines. when a woman said in her opinion health care isn't a right. >> like i said. i'm a dumb southern iowa red neck. i see nowhere in the constitution where health care is a right. >> we will have a bill through the united states senate. probably not one i would have voted for. so if anybody criticizing me for negotiating, you've got six weeks to look a bill that you wouldn't otherwise have, and i don't think that you would have 150 people at my town meeting, or maybe 300 people here at my town hall meeting. >> chuck grassley is deeply involved in health care reform bargaining. kansas congressman dennis moore who represents kansas city said he's been getting death threats on the plan to overhaul health care. he called police after being threatened twice in the last ten days. because of the threats, moore, who is an army veteran, is not holding town hall meetings on health care. he's sending out surveys to

constituents in kansas. he's also taking opinions from voters by phone and e-mail. the fbi is investigating the graffiti outside the office of georgia congressman david scott. the democratic lawmaker found this spray painted on his sign. he was recently involved in a heated debate over health care and believes the two are connected. he's received hate mail, death threats and offensive faxes since the public debate on health care reform began. >> there is bubbling up under this debate, unfortunately. the overtones is this hate, racism, all of these things. but we must have the resolve that hate, racism, this swastika cannot be the focus of the ze bait. >> david scott is hosting a town hall meeting on saturday. he's working to find common ground for people on both sides of the health care debate. it could be just a matter of time before another home grown attack like the oklahoma city bombing occurs in the u.s.

according to a new report by the southern poverty law center it says right-wing militias are popping up at an alarming rate after a decade of decline. 50 new militia training groups have emerged in two years. in texas police have arrested a young u.s. soldier who was working as a hitman for a mexican drug cartel. the 18-year-old was one of three men arrested monday in el paso. they're suspects in a shooting death for a member of the cartel working as an informant for the u.s. a very famous basketball coach is the target of a $10 million extortion scheme. he said he did have consensual sex with a woman accused of trying to extort money from him. pitino, who is married with children, said he and the woman met and had sex in a restaurant in 2003. when she told him two weeks later she was pregnant he said he paid her $3,000 to get an

abortion. the woman filed rape charges last month get pitino after she was charged with extortion. she's pleaded not guilty to the charges. police say her story has been too inconsistent to charge the coach. the fbi and homicide detectives in oakland still searching for a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who disappeared on monday. the foster father said he left the boy alone outside a shoe store where his fiancee, the boy's aunt works. and when he got back outside the child was gone. officers say he couldn't have gotten far on his own. he wears leg braces. no witnesses have come forward to say they saw the boy anywhere around the shoe store. >> it is very difficult for me to believe, just applying common sense, that a 5-year-old little by who has cerebral palsy, braces on both legs, he can barely walk, could just walk away from the car and get lost. i don't see it. and how could others not see him

a 23-year-old man from suburban atlanta found guilty on terrorism related charges. he was convicted of supporting terrorists. he could get 60 years in prison at his sentencing in october. prosecutors also think he made videos of landmarks in the washington area and sent those overseas. the fbi and homicide detectives in oakland, california are searching for a 5-year-old boy with cerebral palsy who disappeared monday. officers say he couldn't have gone far on his own since he wears leg braces. so far no witnesses have come forward to say they saw the boy anywhere around that shoe store. it is very difficult for me to believe that a 5-year-old little boy who has cerebral

palsy, braces on both legs, he can barely walk, could just walk away from the car and get lost. i don't see it. and how could others not see him being taken from that car? >> that's right, nancy. that's a very good question. so the police are trying to see if, in fact, little hasanni campbell was taken away from the bmw that belongs to his foster parent. it's his foster dad that was dropping him off at his biological aunt's shoe store. the fact that no one saw him walking around or being kidnapped is of grave concern. we don't know where he is at this moment, but police are investigating, nancy. agents brought search dogs to the boy's home yesterday and his aunt got custody when her sister couldn't take care of him. she and her fiancee are in the process of legally adopting him.

we'll keep you posted on that story. we watched month as bystanders tried to save a mother whale that beechd herself on the florida shoreline. unfortunately the while whale died. the mother was suffering from pneumonia. she hadn't eaten in at least five days. marine scientists say she wasn't producing enough milk to feed her 6-month-old calf. she had to be euthanized after the mother died. police say one man has been arrested in connection with one of the biggest robberies in british history. scotland yard said the suspect is not one of the well-dressed men in the video. the suspects wore suits as they walked into an upscale jewelry store last week. they pulled out guns and took $65 million worth of jewelry and fired two gun shots into the ground as they escaped. the suspects used at least three getaway cars.

and quite a few, 350 new species have been discovered in the eastern himilayas, including a flying frog and the world's smallest deer. we will show that to you in a moment. this is over a decade of research that went into this. the eastern himilayas is largely unaccessible. lots of new discoveries were hidden out there. a leaf deer. it's so tiny. it's the world's tiniest deer. it's just about two feet. i don't know. it sort of looks like a mouse. it's actually a deer. and a flying frog that has webbed feet so it can glide when it falls. beautiful frog. we'll see that in a second. but the species could be gone as soon as it is discovered because the climate change, a lot of them may not be around for a while. there's the webbed frog. it's interesting to get a look at what we don't see. all the images are for you on our tech page. >> fantastic pictures.
