home. police believe the guy who callcall 911 to report the killings was involved in them. guy heinz jr. charged with eight counts of first degree murder. both physical evidence and testimony link to him. >> very late this afternoon, two pieces of information came forward to us. we took the two pieces of information, compared it to the whole of all of the evidence collected all week long. we were satisfied that that led us to believe that guy hinds jr. is a responsible person for the murders. >> seven of the eight people killed are going to be buried today. an arrest warrant shows that hipz gave police false information about where he was before the killings and also about the circumstances before his 911 call. his father is one of the victims. the ashes of the wild fire near los angeles has become a crime scene now. investigators say it was intentionally set and it killed

two firefighters. there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever started the fire. two firefighters were killed sunday when their fire trucks fell off of a mountainside. they were trying to escape the flames. before they died, they saved about 60 members of another fire crew. president obama may be working on a new health care reform bill. congress has been working on one for months without neglect. several persons tell cnn the president is ready to unveil his own version sometime next week. yesterday, he had a conference call with some of the most liberal members of the house, they said they will not vote for a bill that doesn't have a government-run insurance plan. >> help them to constantly remind our elected officials -- >> these folks are putting their hopes for health care in a higher power. catholic, baptists,

episcopalians, muslims prayed here for health care. health care crosses religious lines. hundreds brought cars. claire mccaskill calling for health care to be changed. she wasn't there. but the cards were presented to her staff. the white house says president obama's upcoming speech to students will encourage them to study hard and stay in school. but some parents think he wants to push his political agenda on their children. tom foreman has the latest on this classroom controversy. >> reporter: call it a fast lesson in public pushback. the president's plan to speak to school kids on tuesday has some conservative parents saying he's trying to brainwash the kids to buying his politics. >> speaking about my kids in school? having to listen to that? it really upsets me. >> politics is up to the family. >> will i send my child? i don't know. right now i would say no. i'll keep him home.

>> reporter: across the country, many school districts are encouraging students to watch. in new orleans, it will be required. but that's an exception. in virtually every state, at least some schools have decided to either not show the speech, review it first, or make viewing optional. some sites schedule conflicts and technical difficulties. but this is not what the white house expected. the president's speech will focus on keeping kids in school, a subject he's promoted before. >> nearly 30% of u.s. high school students aren't making it to graduation. >> reporter: but the core complaint seems to be with supplementary teaching materials from the department of education. originally they called for students to write, quote, what they can do to help the president. the white house has changed that. suggesting children write about their own educational goals. further more, the president's speech will be put on line

illegally detained after september 11 can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen, was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor, which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn they're reviewing the court's decision. oil company bp announced it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico. it could be one of the largest petroleum companies in the u.s. the deposit controls between $4 billion and $6 billion of oil. that's about a year's worth of u.s. demand. bp does not know how much it can extract. in spite of the size, the well won't reduce u.s. dependence on foreign oil. it's going to be a labor day weekend full of hugs and kisses for 128 soldiers who got a

hero's homecoming in alabama. look at the tearful reunions. members of the 46th engine battalion spent the last 15 months in baghdad rebuilding schools and bridges. happy to be home. now they're going to get some rest and catch up on what they've been missing. >> being able to spend time with him, the first time she sat up and said mama. maybe she'll sada da ty dada to. >> so great. >> every soldier deployed on the mission in june of last year made it back home. okay, tell me this -- can you spend hours on an airline flight in a plane without a bathroom? some cargo pilots say they spend hours in the cockpit of planes that don't have facilities. gene meserve reports they're saying they had enough. >> striking at cargo pilots are

raising a stink over working conditions, specifically the lack of bathrooms on the boeing 727s they fly. they offer a show and tell in the youtube video. >> this is what you use to go for number one -- and a much bigger bag for number two, which we don't want to show you. >> pilots say there's no private place to use the bags. and once they're full, they pose a sanitary challenge. >> put in back of the cockpit -- it's filled up, put in the bag and we return back to miami to dispose of it. >> the pilots claim the planes were delivered with bathrooms but amerijet took them out to reduce weight. >> they didn't provide anything. the bags we showed you, they didn't provide those. they realized there was corrosion issues when crew members would have to go to the cargo hold to use the bathroom. that's when they started to provide bee bags and bags for number two.

>> reporter: amerijet refused to comment on the issue. pilots say they have similar setups and the federal aviation administration says there's no requirement that any aircraft have a bathroom, including passenger jets the public flies. that's not an aviation safety issue, it's a passenger or crew member comfort issue. but the business travel coalition said it is a safety issue. pilots should not be distracted when making critical, split second conditions. >> these are working conditions something you would expect from the sweatshops of the 1930s. you cannot have these kinds of conditions and have them compatible with safety margins. it just doesn't work that way. >> we also spoke to the occupational safety and health administration, or ocea. it's not within its jurisdictions. if and when the striking pilots start flying again, they may well be left holding the bag.

former attorney general john ashcroft may soon find himself fighting a lawsuit. federal appeals court ruled that a man who claims he was illegally detained after september 11 can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen, was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn they're reviewing the court's decision. oil company bp announced this week it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico. it could be one of the largest petroleum discoveries in the u.s. the deposit holds between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels of oil equivalent of natural gas. that's a year's worth of u.s. demand. bp does not yet know how much it

was used to start this fire. >> reporter: he takes us through the csi of wildfire investigations. clues he says are everywhere. >> paper on the ground like this. also becomes good indicators. >> these, he says are indicators of the direction the fire burned in at the point of origin. an investigator on scene elaborates. >> indicators can be things such as burned rocks, it can be soil that's been damaged. >> reporter: fee says while these clues reveal the direction, arson is revealed from anything found on the ground to a confession. but another key question. in the territory that is the size of a major city burned acreage for as far as the eye can see. not only finding that point of origin, but determining it's arson fairly quickly in a matter of a few days. how do they get to that point in a few days? >> well, each fire's a little bit different. but the things that we use are early on aerial photographs,

sometimes satellite photographs, witness statements. the firefighters that first arrived. they will know what the area involved was at the time they arrived. >> and with those methods, he says they can narrow down the point of origin to an acre or less, maybe a manmade object like this burned out bottle. he said they combed through the area with everything from sifters to dogs and then of course, they look for witnesses. cnn, tujunga canyon, california. congress has been looking on a bill without much luck. the president may be ready to unveil his own version sometime next week. yesterday, he had a conference call with some of the most liberal members of the house and they've said they will not vote for a bill that doesn't have a government-run insurance plan. >> help them to constantly remind our elected officials. >> these folks are putting their

>> a little disturbing. public safety officials say the concern is not enough to close beaches during this busy holiday weekend. five more u.s. banks were forced to shut their doors on friday. all of the failed banks are regional. two in illinois, the others are in missouri, arizona, and iowa. that pushes the number of bank failures so far this year to 89. an e-mail claims that a group called the earth liberation front is responsible for knocking down these two radio station towers yesterday. check it out. the e-mail says that the towers in the seattle area were torn down because of health and environmental concerns. the fbi is investigating. one agent says it hasn't found any evidence that other groups besides the e.l.f. were involved. it was taken down with heavy construction equipment already at the site. here's a look ahead at the events we're watching for you for the rest of the day today. at 3:00 p.m. eastern, burial services are planned for seven family members killed in their mobile home in georgia last

former attorney general john ashcroft may soon find himself fighting a lawsuit. a federal appeals court ruled that a man who claims he was illegally detained after september 11th can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn they're reviewing the court's decision. oil company bp announced this week it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico.

police arrested someone for that bone chilling massacre at this mobile home in georgia. and the suspect is somebody that you've already heard from. the white house says the president will talk to kids about staying in school, but some parents say that he won't be talking to their kids about anything. tailgate parties abound at college campuses across the country. sure some games have been played, but today is the real start of the college football season. hey, good morning to you. you found hln on this labor day weekend. i'm natasha curry, thanks for joining us. we begin first with a new development in that brutal massacre at a georgia mobile home. police believe that the guy who called 911 to report the

killings was actually involved in them. guy heinze jr. is charged with eight counts of first-degree murder. police say both physical evidence and testimonies point to him. >> very late this afternoon, two pieces of information came forward to us. we took those two pieces of information, compared it to the whole of all of the evidence collected all week long. we were satisfied that that led us to believe that guy heinze jr. is the responsible person for the murders. >> seven of the eight people killed are going to be buried today. an arrest warrant shows that heinze gave police false information about where he was before the killings and also about the circumstances before his 911 call. his father is one of the victims. the ashes of the wildfire near los angeles has become a crime scene now. investigators say it was intentionally set. and it killed two firefighters.

illegally detained after september 11th can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen, was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor, which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn that they're reviewing the court's decision. oil company bp announced this week it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico. it could be one of the largest petroleum discoveries in the u.s. the deposit holds between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels worth of oil. equivalent, which includes natural gas, that's about a year's worth of u.s. demand. bp does not yet know how much it can extract. and in spite of its size, experts say the well won't reduce foreign dependence on oil. it's going to be a labor day weekend full of hugs and kisses for 128 soldiers who got a hero's welcome home in alabama.

former attorney general john ashcroft may soon find himself fighting a lawsuit. federal appeals court ruled that a man who claims he was illegally detained after september 11th can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor, which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn that they're reviewing the court's decision. oil company bp announced this week it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico. it could be one of the largest petroleum discoveries in the u.s. the deposit holds between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels worth of oil, equivalent, which

there is a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever started the fire. two firefighters were killed sunday when their fire truck fell off a mountainside. they were trying to escape the flames. and before they died, they saved about 60 members of another fire crew. president obama may be working on a new health care reform bill. congress has been working on one for months without much luck. several sources tell cnn that the president may be ready to unveil his own version sometime next week. yesterday, he had a conference call with some of the most liberal members of the house and they've said they will not vote for a bill that doesn't have a government-run insurance plan. the u.s. embassy in afghanistan has fired 14 private security guards accused of wrong doing there. that's from u.s. ambassador, the one in kabul. an independent watchdog group said armor group north america allowed mistreatment and

intimidation of guards by their bosses. the company reportedly also allowed inappropriate sexual activity. the u.s. embassy also says the armor group's entire senior management will be replaced. the embassy and the state department are investigating the allegations. a massachusetts congressman is considering getting into the race to succeed the late senator ted kennedy. lynch says he'll make a financial decision over the next week or so. the primary is set for december 8th and the special election will be held january 19th. massachusetts attorney general martha cokely was the first to officially announce her candidacy. an e-mail claims that a group called the earth liberation front is responsible for knocking down these two radio station towers yesterday. check it out. the e-mail says that the towers in the seattle area were torn down because of health and environmental concerns. the fbi is investigating.

central plains state. central plains look good, but the southern half of the mississippi valley, could see some scattered showers in say parts of missouri, also into texas. in terms of the storms we may see in parts of missouri, some of these have been fairly strong in the early part of the day, not expecting anything severe as we go into the afternoon hours. north of conway and little rock, scattered showers, flash flooding might be a possibility in low lying areas in spots we have poor drainage. if we happen to go out to the coast, that's not going to be an issue. a lot of sunshine in most spots, but back into florida, daytona beach, you have a chance of storms into the afternoon, possibly a few showers in cape hatteras, but nothing severe, and hilton head looks pretty good with a mix of sun and clouds. parts of the northeast, high temperatures in the 70s. same story in the hamptons, should be nice there, and high temperatures in the 70s, 60s and 70s up and down the mid-atlantic states up to the main coast.

hundreds of parishioners brought cards directed to missouri senator claire mccatskill calling for health care to be changed. she wasn't there, but those cards were presented to her staff. wildlife agents believe that a wild cougar is probably on the loose near downtown seattle. not talking about a woman here. they closed the city's largest park where the animal is believed to be hiding. they say at least four people reported seeing the cougar in the area recently. one man said that he saw the cougar in his driveway yesterday morning. wildlife agents have set up two traps in the park and say they're getting closer to catching it. i'm larry smith, school is back in, which made me start thinking, did we ever play kick ball outside of school activities or even after sixth grade? if you've ever yearned to play again, the time is now. >> reporter: if you follow the bouncing ball, you might think this is recess at an elementary school, but this is no group of children.

try elations today. brand power. helping you buy better. former attorney general john ashcroft may soon find himself fighting a lawsuit. federal appeals court ruled that a man who claims he was illegally detained after september 11th can sue ashcroft. the man, a u.s. citizen was held and interrogated for 16 days in 2003 according to court documents. ashcroft had argued that his involvement was as a prosecutor, which would make him immune from lawsuits. ashcroft's spokesperson told cnn that they're reviewing the court's decision.

oil company bp announced this week it's tapped into a giant pool of crude oil seven miles below the gulf of mexico. it could be one of the largest petroleum discoveries in the u.s. the deposit holds between 4 billion and 6 billion barrels worth of oil, equivalent, which will include natural gas, that's about a year's worth of u.s. demand. now bp does not yet know how much it can extract. in spite of its size, experts say the well won't reduce u.s. dependence on foreign oil. it's going to be a labor day weekend full of hugs and kisses for 128 soldiers who got a hero's welcome home in alabama. but look at these tearful reunions so happy to see their loved ones. members of the 46 engineer battalion spent the last 15 months in baghdad rebuilding schools and bridges. now they're going to get some rest and catch up on what they've been missing. >> being able to spend time with him and him missing all of the
