out of a job today, president obama's environmental adviser van jones resigned after coming under fire for signing a 2004 online petition. it suggested that the government played a role in the 9/11 attacks. he apologized and denied agreeing with the petition. he said i cannot, in good conscious, ask my colleagues defending or explaining my past. we need all hands on deck, fighting for the future. other comments jones made before getting his white house job has also gotten attention, including one on youtube, where jones talks about republicans. >> how are the republicans able to push things through when they have less senators but somehow we can't? >> well, the answer to that is [ bleep ]. >> in 2005, jones was also quoted, saying he became a communist after the acquittals

in the rodney king police beating case in 1992. this deadly wildfire is no longer threatening communities north of los angeles. crews are getting the upper hand and have contained nearly half the station fire. you see all the smoke here, burning east toward a large wilderness area. since it started, the fire has burned 155,000 acres. two firefighters were killed, fighting it. at least 76 homes have been destroyed. investigators say it is arson and they're trying to figure out who started it. seven people, the victims of a killing spree in south georgia, were laid to rest yesterday. funeral arrangements are still being made for an eighth victim. as sean callebs reports, friends and family were shocked when they heard who is accused in the killings. >> reporter: loved ones are saying good-bye to eight people brutally killed in the small coastal town of brunswick.

they tell me they were floored when 22-year-old guy heinze jr. was charged with all eight murders, stand accused of killing his own father, five other relatives and two friends. >> the most heinous crime we've ever had in the community. >> reporter: guy heinze jr., the man charged in the killings, made this frantic 911 call after he claimed he discovered the bodies. >> my whole family's dead. >> reporter: something wasn't right. after police arrived, they charged heinze with possession of drugs, obstruction of justice and tampering with evidence from allegedly taking a shotgun from the mobile home and hiding it in the car. at the time police said he was not a suspect. two days later, his attorney said his client is not a killer. >> mr. heinze denies his involvement in the murders. >> has he been cooperating? >> he has and will continue to cooperate. >> reporter: heinze walked out of the county jail friday only

that is going to be a test of whether we are willing to be transparent and whether we are willing to show that we are here to protect the afghan people. and i think that it's very important to me that we follow through on that. nato and afghan officials are investigating the air strike. international forces initially said they believed there were no civilians there. a boy who had been missing for nearly two years was found alive, in a secret room in his grandmother's house. 6-year-old ricky chekevdia was allegedly kidnapped during a custody dispute between his mother and father. when police found him, he was hiding with his mom. >> he ran around like he had never seen the outdoors. it was actually sad. he is in very good spirits for someone who has been isolated in that house with no other outside being. very social, very polite, very

talkative little boy. >> ricky's mom and grandmother are in jail. he is staying with one of his father's relatives. they are looking into claims that his dad abused him before his disappearance, but his dad denies that. the body of a 4-year-old boy who had been missing since friday was found yesterday in a septic tank in western pennsylvania. wyatt smitsky had gone outside to play with his two sisters. his family reported him missing about 1 1/2 hours later. hundreds of people helped to search for wyatt. police say the lid of the septic tank looked like it had been tampered with and would have been impossible for the boy to lift t police did interview his father, but haven't said if he was a suspect. wyatt had a heart condition and needed daily medication. all five people on board a small plane died when it went crashing into an oklahoma park, then burst into flames. investigators say a tulsa doctor

and his family were flying in heavy fog, headed to dallas yesterday. the plane hit a guidewire from a communications tower that was about 150-feet tall. highway patrol says it appears that the pilot did not see the tower. he, his wife and two young daughters all died at the scene along with another man on board. the busy bay bridge in san francisco is scheduled to reopen tuesday, after some major repairs. that may not happen now. the reason is a significant crack was found in a top to bottom investigation of the double-deck span which links san francisco and oakland. a senior engineer says that the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday and it was one of the eight steel pieces that helped hold up that side of the bridge. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section. you can see their progress here. the pieces of steel are about two inches thick. the crack was about halfway through one of them. you can watch workers installing that new section of the bridge

live on the web, the 300-foot piece is scheduled to be rolled in today and weighs about 7,000 tons. it's going to be replaced in mid air. but how? well, one of the tricks the workers are using is dove soap. that's right, same soap you may use, using it to lubricate two parts of the section. >> the teflon pad is there, lubricated with dish soap. it's really slippery and slick, there's no friction and it can move. >> workers say there's nothing special about the dove brand and any soap would do. they shopped around and dove gave them the best deal. they'll use hundreds of gallons of it. great white sharks have been tagged for the first time in the atlantic ocean to track their movement. har pooner tagged two of them off the massachusetts coast yesterday. officials will track the shark's travels by satellite so

another radio tower has come tumbling down. this time in pennsylvania. white hall township says a 350-foot tower belonging to clear channel fell overnight, but it's not exactly clear how it came down here. earth liberation front claiming responsibility for knocking down two towers in the seattle area. piece of heavy equipment was apparently used there. whitehall police haven't said if that incident and a latest one could be related. rescue crews are searching for survivors from a ferry accident off the philippines. at least three people died when the ferry capsized this morning. almost 1,000 people were on it and more than 200 have been rescued. it's still unclear why the ferry sank, but this ship had two other incidents since 2006. some college students would rather cheat than fail.

for survivors from a ferry accident off the philippines. local coast guard official now says at least five people died when the ferry capsized this morning. about 900 people have been rescued and about 60 are still missing. five u.s. boats and a civilian helicopter are helping to take part in the search. it's still unclear why the ferry sank. this ship had two other incidents since 2006. jaycee dugard's hometown never lost hope that she would be found alive. now they're celebrating her rescue after being captive for 18 years. they're saying thank you, as well. >> everyone was just going, did you hear, jaycee's alive? and she's found. we were all so excited. >> neighbor, angie keil never forgot the blue-eyed girl so viole violently snatched on on her way to school. sadness and fear have reverberated in the mountain

millions of green jobs for the u.s. economy is out of a job. president obama's environmental adviser van jones resigned after signing a petition in 2004 that suggested that the government played a role in the 9/11 attacks. jones apologized and denied agreeing with the petition but says quote i cannot in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. we need all hands on deck fighting for the future. other comments jones made before getting his white house job have also gotten attention. including one that's now on youtube where jones talks about republicans. >> how were the republicans able to put things through when they had less than 60 senators but somehow we can't? >> well, the answer to that is they're [ bleep ]. >> in 2005 jones was also quoted saying he became a communist after the acquittals in the

rodney king police beating case in 1992. this deadly wild fire is no longer threatening communities north of los angeles. crews are finally getting the upper hand and contained nearly half of the station fire. you can see all of the smoke. it's now burning east toward a large wilderness area. the fire has burned 155,000 acres. two firefighters were killed fighting it and at least 76 homes have been destroyed. investigators say it is arson and they are trying to figure out who started it. seven people, the victims of a killing spree in south georgia, were laid to rest yesterday. funeral arrangements are still being made for an eighth victim. as shawn calebs reports friends and family were shocked when they heard who is accused in the killings. >> reporter: loved ones say good-bye to eight people brutally killed in a mobile home in the small georgia coastal town of brunswick. family members told me they were floored when authorities told

them 22-year-old guy heinze jr. had been charged with all eight murders. he stands accused of killing his own father, five other relatives, and two family friends. the killings have shocked this region. >> it's the most heinous crime we've had in the community. >> reporter: a week ago guy heinze jr. the man now charged in the killings, made this frantic 911 call after he claimed he discovered the bodies. >> my whole family's dead. >> reporter: something wasn't right. after police arrived they charged heinze with possession of drug, obstruction of justice, and tampering with evidence for allegedly taking a shotgun from the mobile home and hiding it in a car. at the time police said he was not a suspect. two days later his attorney said his client is not a killer. >> mr. heinze denies his involvement in the murders. he has been cooperating and will continue to cooperate. >> reporter: wednesday a judge set his bond at 20,000. friday he walked out of jail only to be arrested two hours

very polite, very talkative, little boy. >> ricky's mom and grand mother are in jail. he is staying with one of his father's relatives. authorities are looking into claims that ricky's dad abused him before his disappearance but his dad denies that. the body of a 4-year-old boy who had been missing since friday was found yesterday in a septic tank in western pennsylvania. wyatt smitsky was last seen friday night when he had gone outside to play with his sisters. his family reported him missing about an hour and a half later. hundreds helped search. police said the lid where the septic tank where his body was found looked like it was tamp tampered with. police did interview his father but haven't said if he's a suspect. wyatt had a heart condition and needed daily medication. all five people on board a small plane died when it went crashing into an oklahoma park, then burst into flames.

a tulsa doctor and his family were flying in heavy fog headed to dallas. the plane hit a guide wire from a communications tower that was about 150 feet tall. the highway patrol says it appears that the pilot did not see the tower. he, his wife, and two young daughters all died at the scene along with another man on board. the busy bay bridge in san francisco is scheduled to reopen tuesday after major repairs. but that may not happen now. the reason is a significant crack was found in a top-to-bottom examination of the double deck span which links san francisco and oak land. a senior engineer says the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday. it was one of the eight steel pieces that helped hold up that side of the bridge. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section and you can see their progress here. the pieces of steel are about two inches thick. the crack was halfway through one of them. for the first time great white sharks are tagged in the

yet another radio tower has come tumbling down. this time in pennsylvania. police in whitehall township say a 350-foot tower belonging to clear channel fell. it's not clear how it came down. yesterday we told you about the earth liberation front claiming responsibility for knocking two towers down in the seattle area. a piece of heavy construction equipment was apparently used there but whitehall police haven't said if that incident and the latest could be related. rescue crews are searching for survivors from a ferry accident off the philippines. a local coast guard official now says at least five people died when the ferry cap sized this morning. about 900 people have been

in the rodney king police beating case in 1992. this deadly wildfire is no longer threatening communities north of los angeles. crews are getting the upper hand and have contained nearly half the station fire. you see all the smoke here, burning east toward a large wilderness area. since it started, the fire has burned 155,000 acres. two firefighters were killed, fighting it. at least 76 homes have been destroyed. investigators say it is arson and they're trying to figure out who started it. seven people, the victims of a killing spree in south georgia, were laid to rest yesterday. funeral arrangements are still being made for an eighth victim. as sean callebs reports, friends and family were shocked when they heard who is accused in the killings. >> reporter: loved ones are saying good-bye to eight people brutally killed in a mobile home in the small coastal towns of brunswick. family members told me they were

pennsylvania. wyatt submitsky was reported mittsing about an hour and a half after going outside to play with his sisters. police say the lid of the septic tank where his body was found looked like it was tampered with and would have been impossible for the boy to lift it. police interviewed his father but have not said if he was a suspect. wyatt had a heart condition and needed daily medication. the busy bay bridge in san francisco is scheduled to re-open tuesday after some major repairs. that may not happen now. the reason is a significant crack was found in a top-to-bottom examination of the double-deck span which links san francisco and oakland. a senior engineer says that the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday. it was one of the eight steel pieces that helped hold up that side of the bridge. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section and you can see their progress here. pieces of steel are about two

almost 1,000 people were on it and more than 200 have been rescued. five u.s. boats and a civilian helicopter are helping take part in the search. it's still unclear why the ferry sank, but this ship had two other incidents since 2006. jaycee dugard's hometown never lost home that she would be found alive. so today they are celebrating her rescue after being held captive for nearly 18 years. as kara finnstrom reports, they're saying thank you as well. >> everyone was just going "did you hear jaycee's alive? she's found!" we were all so excited. >> reporter: neighbor angie keil never forgot the blue-eyed girl snatched on her way to school. >> there were tears and they were scared. they should have been scared. >> reporter: one classmate felt

you can watch worker installing that new section of the bridge live on the web. the 300-foot piece weighs about 7,000 tons and is scheduled to be rolled in today. it will be replaced in mid-air. but how? one of the tricks that the workers are using is dove soap. the same soap you may use. workers use it to lubricate two rails that hold the new bridge section. >> these jacks run on teflon pads. instead of wheels, the teflon pad is there. it's lubricated with dish soap so it's really slippery and slick and there is no friction and it can move. >> workers say there's nothing special with the dove brand and any soap would do but officials shopped around and dove gave them the best deal. they'll use hundreds of gallons of it. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan believes at least some civilians were killed in a nato air strike there. general stanley mcchrystal visited the attack site

pennsylvania. wyatt was last seen friday night when he had gone outside to play with his sisters. his family reported him missing about an hour and a half later. hundreds of people helped search for wyatt. police said the lid of the septic tank where his body found looked like it had been tampered with and it would have been impossible for the boy to lift it it. police did interview his father but haven't said if he's a suspect. wyatt had a heart condition and needed daily medication. the busy bay bridge in san francisco is scheduled to reopen tuesday after some major repairs. but that may not happen now. the reason is a significant crack was found in a top to bottom examination of the double-deck span which links san francisco and oakland. a senior engineer says that the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday. it was one of the eight steel pieces that help hold up that side of the bridge. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section. you can see their progress here. the pieces of steel are about

two inches thick. the crack was about halfway through one of them. for the first time, great white sharks have been tagged in the atlantic ocean to track their movement. a harpooner tagged two of them off cape cord yesterday. officials will track the sharks' travels by satellite so scientists can better understand their might ratory patterns. they were spotted while scientists investigated reports of shark sightings in the cape. swimmers have been warned to be extra careful. i'm bonny schneider with a look at your forecast. for those of you planning a beach getaway for the holiday weekend, you'll find good conditions in some beaches up into the northeast. however, the gulf coast and all the way across parts of florida will be looking for stormy conditions for today. we'll be seeing temperatures changing as we go through the afternoon. hot in texas but cool up into new england. the holiday forecast calls for cooler weather through the great lakes, very pretty conditions across much of the mid-atlantic

you can watch workers installing that new section of the bridge live on the web. the 300-foot piece is scheduled to be rolled in today and it weighs about 7,000 tons. it's going to be replaced in midair. but how? one of the tricks the workers are using is dove soap. that's right. the same soap you may use. workers use it to lupry kate two rails that hold the new bridge section. >> these jacks, they run on teflon pads instead of wheels. the teflon pad is there, then it's lubricated with dish soap. so it's really slippery and slick. there's no friction and it can move. >> workers say it's nothin special about the dove brand. any soap would do. but officials shopped around, and dove gave them the best deal. they're going to use hundreds of gallons of it. the top u.s. commander in afghanistan believes at least some civilians were killed in a nato air strike there. general stanley mcchrystal

much sooner than he wanted to be after blowing the whistle on behavior he said was shocking and undignified. >> it was downright stupid some of the things they were doing and insensitive. >> reporter: he was a contractor at camp sullivan in afghanistan, housing quarters for u.s. embassy guards on contract. the camp is now under a u.s. state department investigation for inappropriate conduct stemming from charges and explicit photographs involving u.s. embassy guards, images of nudity, alcohol abuse, and what appears to be sexual hazing. he said he saw it for himself a couple of months ago, was disgusted and said no one should have tolerated it. >> you would not try to enforce sexual deviant way of thinking on someone. drop your trousers just for a laugh, but when you start

encouraging people to drink alcohol run off someone's body part, over the top. >> reporter: he said he wrote letters to his employerer as complained to supervisors, a group that shared the camp and employed the guards featured in the pictures. >> his answer was -- and i think that's what they -- the way they looked at some of the incidents that happened. >> reporter: but the incidents were investigated by the watchdog group, project on government oversight and reported to the state department. several guards have now been fired or resigned. management is being replaced. but as a whistle employer, peerson says he wasn't after mass firings, just a change in behavior. he said back at camp sullivan he was made to feel he had done something wrong and so he resigned a few days ago only to ask for his job back just hours later. it was two late. he was on a plane home within

hours. his employer says peerson resigned of his own free will and, quote, although we are now aware of the alleged events at camp sullivan, the employee's resignation was not associated with this matter. how much does it bother you right now? you're the whistle blower, you said it's not right, and now you're out of a job. >> if i could turn back the clock and have a chance to do something different, i don't think i would. i still think i'd do exactly the same thing because i think people's dignity -- dignity at work and respect at work is more important than having the job himself. >> reporter: pearson says h will continue to help with the department's investigation but he's still stunned that doing the right thick would have such dire consequences in his own life. all five people onboard a small plane died when it went

crashing into an oklahoma park and then burst into flames. investigators say a tulsa doctor and his family were flying in heavy fog yesterday. they hit a guy wire from a communications tower that was about 150 feet tall. the highway patrol says it appears the pilot did not see the tower. he and his wife and two young daughters died at the scene along with another map onboard. >> the busy bay city bridge is due to open after tuesday after major repairs but that may not happen. the reason is a significant crack was found in a top-to-bottom examination. a senior engineer says that the crack was discovered on the eastern side yesterday and was one of the eight steel pieces that helped hold up that side of the brilk. workers saw the crack while they were replacing one bridge section and you can see their progress here. the pieces of steel are about two inches thick. the crack was about halfway through one of them.

and you can watch workers installing that new section of the bridge live on the web. the 300-foot piece is scheduled to be rolled in today and it weighs about 78,000 tons and it good evening to be placed in midair. how? one of the tricks they're using is dove soap. workers use it to lubricate two rails that hold the new bridge section. >> these jacks, they run on teflon pads instead of we'lls. then it's lubricated with dish soap so it's really slippery and slick. there's no friction and it can move. >> workers say there's nothing special about it but workers shopped around and dove gave them the best deal. they're going the use hundreds of gallons of it. they believe some civilians were killed in a nato air strike.

stanley mcchrystal visited the attack sight. 90 people were killed when a plane hit two diesel gas trucks. they allowed civilians to take some gas from the trucks. >> i think it's a serious event that is going to be a test of whether we are willing to be transparent and whether we're willing to show that we're here to protect the afghan people, and i think that it's very important to me that we -- that we follow through on that. >> nato and afghan officials are investigating the air strike. international forces initially said they believed there were no civilians there. a boy who had been missing for nearly two years was found alive in a secret room in his grandmother's house. 6-year-old ricky chekevdia was kidnapped during a custody dispute between his mother and father.

hazard." >> parts of the suv are scattered all over the house, as you can see, and the driver pleaded not guilty to dwi. he's due in court next month. more than 100 firefighters are trying to contain this huge water main break in an l.a. suburb. a spokesman said the main broke in studio city last night and damaged several homes and businesses. some people had to leave their homes but no one has been injured. firefighters had to rescue one driver whose car was swept away in all of this. water is several feet deep in some spots. the spokesman says it could take five hours to shut the water off. i'm larry smith. nascar driver carl edwards has become known for his backflip after victories. if it weren't for a broken foot, he might have flipped. this 13-year-old won a design contest.
