fire from conservative activists for signing an online petition in '04. it asks for the investigation to determine whether the government played any role in allowing the 9/11 attacks to happen. he apologized and said he did not fully read the petition before signing it. in his resignation letter jones said this -- i could not in good conscious ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending ob explaining my past. we need all hands on deck. making the rounds on the sunday talk shows, white house adviser david axelrod said a public plan isn't a core issue in health care reform. when white house spokesman robert gibbs was asked if obama would veto a bill that didn't include the public option, gibbs sidestepped the question. one idea making the rounds again here, a public option as a backup plan. >> i think he has to say that if there's going to be a public option it's going to be subject

>> our thanks to john king at the minnesota state fair. meanwhile, president obama will spell out his ideas for health care reform in a speech to congress on wednesday. job or no job? millions of us will have a labored labor day, you could say. the unemployment rate is creeping towards 10%. people who are lucky enough to have jobs are worried about keeping them, while those who don't have jobs struggle with the threat of being out of work. the nation's jobless rate jumped to a 24-year high of 9.7% last month. it is expected to top 10% this year, and keep climbing into next year before falling back. finance ministers of the world's most powerful countries want to crack down on hefty banker bonuses. that is one thing they agreed on during the g-20 financial meeting in london. the plan falls short of what european leaders are demanding, though, because the u.s. and

britain refuse to impose caps on bonuses. in an exclusive interview with our sister network, cnn, treasury secretary timothy geithner said that does not mean the excesses of the financial services industry will be tolerated in the future. >> there is no risk that we will -- can afford and will allow conditions in the financial industry to go back to what they were in the peak of the boom. >> but the speed at which they've gone back to there sort of -- >> haven't gone back yet. >> on the way? >> nope. haven't gone back yet. i think it's important it not happen. again, you are going to see very significant reforms in compensation packages across the financial sector. one thing we did today which is very important is reach agreement on a common frame work and commit ourselves to make sure we're going to apply those standards on an even basis across our countries. >> geithner and his colleagues also agreed to continue pursuing economic stimulus policies like low interest rates to help insure a global recovery.

a deadly wildfire is no longer threatening communities north of los angeles. crews are finally getting the upper hand on the station fire. it is more than 50% contained. it is now burning toward the east in the san gabriel wilderness. at least 76 homes have been destroyed. investors say it is arson. they are now trying to figure out who started it. i'm cnn meteorologist bonnie schneider. for those of you planning a beach get away for the remainder of the holiday weekend you'll find good conditions in some beaches up in the northeast. the gulf coast and flr flr stormy conditions. temperatures changing through the afternoon. hot in texas but cool up into new england. the holiday forecast calls for

crack discovered in san francisco's bay bridge. the crack is in one of the eight steel lengths that support that side of the bridge. the steel links are about two inches thick. the crack goes about halfway through one of them. an engineer says it will be fixed simply to, quote, maintain red redunda redundantsy. >> we want to repair it before we open the bridge. >> the busy bridge is scheduled to reopen stutuesday, but if th repair can't be made by then that will be delayed. you can watch the work on the bridge live on a series of web cams. the 300 foot section that was part of the original repair was set into place this morning. it weighs about 7,000 tons. and the construction crew actually used a common product you have at home to slide it into place. we're talking about liquid soap. workers use it to lubricate two

crashes into the second floor of a house. the second floor. police in suffolk county, new york, say a drunk driver ran a stop sign, hit a mound of dirt and went flying in the air. the homeowner had just put his house on the market. >> i was shocked. how could you do this? what were you thinking? how fast were you going? he was doing dukes of hazard. >> yes, he was. parts of the suv are scattered all over that guy's house. the driver pleaded not guilty to a drunken driving charge. he's due back in court next month. police say a new york couple took pictures of their two kids, one of them just 11 months old, posing with guns. investigators found out about the pictures after the woman e-mailed them to friends and relatives and one of them called the city's child protection agency. the 24-year-old mother reportedly told police she thought the pictures would be funny. she and her boyfriend now face child endangerment, weapons and marijuana charges. an unbelievable story out of

illinois. a boy missing for nearly two years has been found alive in a secret room at his grandmother's house. police say 6-year-old ricky was kidnapped during a custody dispute between his mother and father. when police found him he was hiding with his mom. >> we let him out of the car. he ran around like he'd never seen the outdoors. it was actually very sad. surprisingly, ricky is in very good spirits. for someone who's been isolated in that house with no other outside beings, he is very, very social. very polite. very talkative little boy. >> ricky's mom and grandmother are now in jail. he's staying with his father's relatives. authorities are also looking into claims that ricky's father abused him before his disappearance. the father denies that accusation. few illegal drugs are as addictive as methamphetamine or crystal meth. brook baldwin shows us how one addict is struggling to overcome his dependence on the drug.

>> reporter: it may look like scenes from a horror movie. but they're not. these are anti-drug ads from the methamphetamine project, showing suburban teens turning into meth addicted zombies, their faces picked apart, a dramatic look at how methamphetamines can destroy the body. but this is all through the face of a meth addict. randy used the drug for 3 1/2 year. now he's clean. >> i was one of those people that looked in the mirror and said today's the day i'm not going to drink or do drugs. and i did. >> reporter: randy was already struggling with alcohol abuse when a friend introduced him to crystal meth. >> actually the person how gave me crystal is now dead as a result of his drug use. >> reporter: crystal meth is also referred to as speed, ice, glass or tina. long term use can cause psychosis, hallucinations, anxiety, even stroke. a 2007 survey from the national institute on drug abuse found

1.3 million people over the age of 12 reported abusing meth. that number was down slightly from the year before, but still cause for concern. when randy realized that his life had become unmanageable, he sought treatment. when traditional therapy didn't work, he looked for help from a higher source. >> then i had to make a decision to turn that over to a power outside of myself. to ask god for help and guidance and to -- you know, to get beyond that. >> reporter: he joined a 12-step program for crystal meth addicts which works like alcoholics anonymous. his group's meetings have a spiritual focus. they pray together. some read scripture. people talk about their connection to a higher power. an addiction psychiatrist often recommends her clients attend 12-step meetings as part of the process. >> it includes things like a

willingness to make changes. openness to suggestion. honesty is one of the most fundamental principles. >> reporter: traditionally, many of the 12 steps reference god. step five, admit to god, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs. but experts point out you don't have to be religious to participate in a 12-step program. >> spirituality really is not necessarily synonymous with religion. and spiritualalty in one of the simp list definitions is that which gives a person means and purpose in their lives. >> reporter: today randy has several years of sobriety behind him. but he still takes it one day at a time. he attends 12-step meetings and prays every day. >> i have to have constant prayer medication throughout the day. there is a solution. you can do this. you never have to drink or use

expected to top 10% this year and keep climbing to next year before falling back. nfl star shawne merriman is under arrest. the san diego chargers linebacker is accused of choking and restraining reality show star. the model o told police that merriman tried to stop her when she tried to leave his home early this morning. he's charged with battery and false imprisonment. she was taken to a hospital in suburban san diego. best known for her mtv ereality dating show, "a shot at love." a deadly wildfire is no longer threatening communities north of los angeles. crews are getting the upper hand. it's more than 50% contained and burning toward the east in the san gabriel wilderness. the fire has charred 155,000 acres were more than 240 square miles. at least 76 homes have been

destroyed. investigators say it is arrestsarresson. a major crack discovered in the fran bay bridge. the defects were spotted while they were replacing a section of the bridge that links oakland to san francisco. the crack is in a steel link that support that side of the bridge. the steel links are about 2" thick and this crack goes through one of them. an engineer says it will be fixed to, similar 34ri, to quote, maintain redundancy. >> the crack in the i-bar, one of the eight i-bars was what we need to repair. the other seven i-bars took up the load and we want to repair it before we open the bridge. >> the bridge is scheduled to reopen on tuesday but if the repair can't be made by then that will be delayed. and you can watch the work on the bridge live on a series of webcams. the 300 foot section that was part of the original repair was set into place this morning.

it weighs about 7,000 tons and the construction crew actually used a common product you have at home to slide it into place. we're talking about liquid soap. workers use it to lube kate two rails that hold the new bridge section. >> these jacks, they run on teflon pads instead of wheels. the teflon pad is there and they've lube dated with dish soap. so it's really slippery and slick and there's no friction and it can move. >> officials shopped around and got a good deal on dove brand dish soap so that's what they are using. hundreds of gallons of it. more than 100 firefighters worked furiously for four hours on this. they were trying to cap that major water main break in los angeles. now crews are cleaning up the mess the broken pipe left behind. a fire department spokesman says the main broke in the studio city neighborhood last night causing damage to several homes and businesses in the area. water was several feet deep in some areas. you see the firefighter there

walking through it. they had to rescue a driver whose car was swept away. some people were evacuated and luckily, no one was injured. wildlife officials captured a cougar that has been roaming seattle. the 140 pound animal was on the loose. it was immobilized with a train which liezer. they say it is not aggressive and didn't stalk people. they are considering releasing it into the wild wearing a gps collar so they can keep tabs on the cat's where abouts. at least three great white shark sightings have closed beaches in cape cod. they are tagging them in order to monitor their behavior. here's a boston affiliate wcvb. >> reporter: environmental police had a busy day in the waters off chatham patrolling the areas where sharks have been

endangerment, weapons' and marijuana charges. and autopsy is being done on the body of a 4-year-old pennsylvania boy. wyatt smith was found dead yesterday, stuffed inside a septic tank near his home. the police are calling it a homicide investigation. he was last seen on friday night when he went outside to play with his two sisters. his family reported him missing about an hour and a half later. hundreds of people helped to search for wyatt. the police say the lid of the septic tank looked like it was tampered with and say it would be impossible for him to lift it by himself. they have questioned relatives but have not named suspects. he needed daily med occasion for a heart problem. some folks thought it was an explosion but it was an suv crashing into the second floor of a house. check out the damage. police in new york say a drunk driver ran a stop sign, hit a mound of dirt and went flying.
