president is willing to compromise on a government-run health insurance option. while making the round on the sunday talk shows, the white house adviser david axelrod said it isn't an issue in health care reform. >> all the ideas are on the table, david. the president set forth principles at the beginning of this discussion, at the beginning of the year, can and now all the ideas are on the table. and the president will say we agree on 80% of this. let's do the final 20%. let's get the job done. here's how it is we should do it. >> in his speech, the president is expected to lay out specific details he wants to see in a reform bill. up until this point in the debate, he has only spell out general principles of what he would like to see. the man who headed the obama administration agency focused on creating a millions of green jobs for the economy. he himself is now out of a job. president obama's environmental adviser resigned after coming under fire from conservative

activists for signing an online petition in 2004. it asked for an investigation to determine whether the government played any role in allowing the 9/11 attacks to happen. jones apologized and that he did not fully read the petition before signing it. before he was appointed to the white house position, he also used an expletive to describe republicans during a speech. a video of that speech is posted on youtube. in announcing his resignation, he said this. and i quote. i could not in good conscience ask my colleagues to expend precious time and energy defending or explaining my past. he went on to say, we need all hands on deck, fighting for the future. job or no job? million of us will have a labored labor day with the unemployment rate creeping toward 10%, people who are lucky enough to have jobs are worried about keeping them. while those who don't have jobs struggle with the stress of being out of work. the nation's jobless rate jumped to a 26-year high of 9.7%.

it is expected to top 10% this year and keep climbing into next year before falling back. nfl star shawn merriman is under arrest. the linebacker is cued of choking and restraining reality show star tela tequila. she said he tried to stop her when she tried to leave her southern california home this morning. merriman is charged with battery and false imprisonment. she was taken to a hospital in suburban san diego. she is best known for her mtv dating show, a shot at love with tila tequila. a deadly while fire is no longer threatening communities for the of los angeles. crews are finally getting the upper hand on this station fire. it is more than 50% contained. it is now burning toward the east and the san gabriel wilderness since it started, the fire has charred 155,000 acres. that's more than 240 square miles. sadly, two firefighters were killed while trying to fight that fire.

at least 76 home have been destroyed. investigators say it is arson. they are now trying to figure out who started it. engineers say the public was never in any danger from a major crack discovered in san francisco's bay bridge. the defects were spotted while they were replacing a section of the bridge that linked oakland to san francisco. the crack is in one of eight steel length that's support that side of the bridge. the steel links are about two inches thick and it goes about halfway through one of them. the engineers say the will be fixed to maintain redundancy. >> the crack in the i-bars was significant. the other seven took out the load and we want to repair it before we open the bridge. >> the bridge is scheduled to reopen tuesday. if the repair can't be made by then, of course, that will be delayed. you can watch the work on the bridge live on a series of web cams. the 300-foot section that was part of the original repair was

set into place this morning. it weighs about 7,000 tons, and the construction crew actually used a common product you have at home to slide it into place. we're talking about liquid soap. workers used to it lubricate two rail that hold the new bridge section. >> these jacks, they run on teflon pads instead of wheels. the teflon pad is there and it is lubery quatd dish slope. so it is really slippery and slick. there is no friction and it can move. >> official shopped around and got a good deal on dove brand soap. that's what they're using. hundreds of gallons of it. more than 100 firefighters worked furiously for about four hours on this. they were trying to cap that major water main break in los angeles. now crews are cleaning up the sludgy mess that the broken pipes left behind. a fire department spokesman says the main broke in the city neighborhood last night, causing damage to several home and businesses in the area. water with several feet deep in

some areas. you see the firefighter there walking through it. they had to rescue a driver whose car was swept away. some people evacuated their home. luckily no one was injured. wildlife official have captured a cougar that has been roaming seattle for the past week or so. the largest park was shut down while the 140-pound animal was on the loose. a law enforcement officer tracked down the cougar in discovery park and immobilized it with a. >> translator: tranquillizer. official say the cougar is not aggressive. they are considering releasing it into the wild a gps tiger so they can keep tab on it. at least three great white sightings along cape cod. now experts are getting up close and personal with the predators, actually tagging them in order to monitor their behavior. the boston affiliate wbcb. >> reporter: environmental police had a busy day in the

waters, patrolling the area where sharks have been spotted since thursday. the state's top shark experts had what he called one of the best days in his career. tagging two great white sharks, with a modified harpoon dart. the first ever tagged in the atlantic. greg says the tags that use satellite technology will reveal crucial information in the coming months. >> the behavior, the ecology of these sharks is information we need in order to adequately manage them, conserve them, set up rules and regulations as a fisheries agency. >> reporter: one of the great whites was tag within 75 yards of a popular chatham beach. >> it is a common occurrence for the sharks to be in our waters. swimmers should be aware of that and use appropriate caution. >> reporter: throughout the cape, there has been no shortage of shark jokes. >> do you know how dangerous it is to be wearing that cap in shark infested waters in

secret room at his grandmother's house. police say 6-year-old ricky chekevdia was kidnapped during a custody dispute between his mother and father. when police found him, he was hiding with his mom. >> we let him out of the car and he ran around like he had never seen the outdoors. it was very sad. >> surprisingly, ricky is in very good spirits. for someone who has been isolated in that house with no other outside beings, he is very social. very polite, very talkative little boy. >> ricky's mom and grandmother are in jail. he is staying with his father's relatives. authorities are looking into claim that ricky's father abused him before his disappearance. the father denies that accusation. police say a new york couple took pictures of their two kids, one of them just 11 months old, posing with guns. investigators found out about the pictures after the woman emailed them to friends and relatives, and one of them called the city's child protective agency.

the 24-year-old mother reportedly told police, she thought the pictures would be funny. she and her boyfriend now face child endanger many, weapons and marijuana charges. an autopsy is being done on the body of a 4-year-old pennsylvania boy. wyatt smitsky was found dead in a septic tank near his home. police are calling it a homicide investigation. he was last seen on friday night when he went outside to play with his two sisters. his family reported him missing about an hour and a half later. hundreds of people helped search for wyatt. police say the lid of the septic tank where his body was found looked like it had been tampered with. they say it would have been impossible for him to lift that by himself. police have questioned the boy's relatives but have not named any suspect. wyatt had a heart condition and needed daily medication. some folks thought it was an explosion but it was actually an suv crashing into the second floor of the house. check out all the damage here. police in suffolk county, new

and i think that it is very important to me that we follow through. >> nato and afghan officials are investigating the air strike now. the military initially believed there were no civilians in the area. rescue crews are searching for survivors of an accident in the philippines. a local coast guard official reports that at least nine people died when the ferry capsized. nearly 1,000 people have been rescued and more than 30 are still missing. five u.s. boats and a civilian helicopter are now taking part in the search. the ship has had two other accidents since 2006. if you want a sneak peek at what president obama will be telling the nation's school children on tuesday, you get your chance tomorrow. that is when the text of the address will be posted on the white house website. a huge furor has erupted over this speech. conservative critics lashed out at plans to ask children to write letters on how they could help the president meet
