all right. good morning, tuesday. for those of you halfway through your workweek, look at it that way. i'm robin meade. it is being called the biggest crib recall ever. what a safety group says millions of cribs could trap or suffocate babies. plus, the controversial new mammogram guidelines could now put a big monkey wrench in the health care reform debate. the uproar that could affect your coverage. first, though, be regardless of the economy, you know why you should expect to see a lot of company while shopping on friday. black friday shopping is expected to soar. more on what economists think is behind that expected jump. first, a big story here. if your baby sleeps in a store

craft drop side crib, babies are getting trapped and some have died. more than 2.1 million cribs are being recalled. four babies have suffocated when they got trapped in the side of the crib. one mom talked about what happened to her baby. >> my brother and i did cpr on him until the ambulance got there. >> and i couldn't tell from that sound, did her baby die? to the producers? okay, her baby, unfortunately, passed away. obviously this is a very scary thought for parents. melissa long is in for jennifer with what you need to know about this huge recall. melissa? >> good morning. unfortunately, several babies did die because of this problem, this glitch, robin.

it is huge, 2.1 million of them have been voluntarily recalled. it's because some plastic hardware on the drop side can just break. sometimes the drop side isn't properly installed. when that happens, there's a space that's created between the drop side and the mattress. as you can see, infants, toddle toddlers, they can become trapped leading to suffocation. four have died this way, 11 others have been trapped. >> don't risk your most precious treasure, your child. and get rid of the drop side crib. >> the recommendation, stop using this, stop right now. the stork craft drop side crib until you can get a free repair kit. you can get all the information you need on how to do so on your website at cnn.com/robin. click on the icon that says important websites. again, robin, as you've been stressing, stop using it immediately. >> your heart goes out to the mom we had on that story. we want to guard against any of our viewers going through the same thing. thank you. new this morning, a potential bombshell for health care reform.

cnn has learned that the so-called independent panel that recommended last week women should wait until the age of 50 to get routine mammograms could influence your medical coverage. a section of the senate bill, health care bill, actually mentions the task force. it says mammograms between the ages 40 and 50 are not a priority, this task force, but it doesn't recommend that insurers deny coverage or offer it for that group. despite what the white house officials have said, you potentially would not be covered for mammograms until the age of 50. >> the disconnect is they're saying it doesn't set policy that's technically correct. but secretary sebelius does not say it's not covered. either she didn't know the bill or she is sort of covering it up. i think that this is serious and it is not a republican or a democrat thing. it is about some details in this bill and there are probably many others that could have, and in

this one it will have, a negative impact on people's health. >> we can see what people think of waiting until the age of 50. a new "usa today" poll finds 76% say that they disagree with the recommendations. but women may think they're more susceptible to cancer than they really are. we'll have more on that. the man who was apparently shoved into a glass window during an arrest will be in court today. video shows a transit officer and michael gibson smashing into a train platform window. both were hurt. gibson is charged with resisting arrest and battery but his lawyer is suing for police brutality and civil rights violations. >> the person was not given any opportunity at all to surrender, wasn't given the opportunity to comply. he was immediately grabbed. now i think that's improper and that's wrong and that's how you create potentially dangerous

situations. >> police are asking for additional videos that may have been taken of the arrests. witnesses say gibson seemed drunk and was threatening people. his family is said he is bi-polar. the officer is now on leave. what a story here. new this morning over a seven-year period there has been a 90% jump in the spread of a dangerous super bug. mrsa is resistant to common antibiotics. reuters is is saying new research found more people are now getting the bug outside hospitals. so how can experts stop it from spreading? researchers suggest new tests so that patients can be diagnosed and treated quickly. president obama will announce within days whether he will send more troops to afghanistan. the white house says that he had a final meeting with his national security team last night. one option reportedly calls for 34,000 more troops a. new poll this morning shows that 45% of americans support the war.

a cnn opinion research corporation poll says 52% oppose it. a celebrity chef gets hit in the face by a flying ham. you can't make this stuff up. the poor thing, this happened to paula dean during a holiday food drive. first she tossed a ham and when she wasn't looking somebody tossed one back her way and that has got to hurt. >> i just got hit with a hog so what can i expect? ran head-on into a hog. >> you're one of those people who can laugh about anything. >> you have to laugh. >> the hams were donated for a thanksgiving dinner for the hungry and homeless in atlanta. i hope she's doing all right. >> she is a hero in my household, paula deen. no doubt about it. my mother-in-law is her. >> her sons are friends of the show, too. she's doing all right this morning.

what does she say? a little butter makes everything better. if you're doing any traveling today, it's a big travel day for the holiday for thanksgiving. one off the coast of the eastern seaboard, another one wrapping up around kansas city and in between high pressure with a lot of fog so the eastern half of the nation is going to be tough going anywhere really especially when you get into philadelphia for the morning and new york city, too. that's long island. showers out of point pleasant moving into the city later today. you see the winds out of the northeast again so travel delays in new york. you're going to get them there. boston, too, with the rain showers coming up through. chicago, the fog is out there. look at the heavy rain wrapping up just west of kansas city. radar picture down i-70. wet road. come to the north, more wet stuff. into des moines and western parts of iowa and the showers get all the way up as far north as minneapolis. a little bit further north than that, too. that's something we're watching and the dense fog is out there

confirmed there is a strong link between a certain kind of chinese dry wall and metal corrosion. correspondent richard lui joins us now. how do you know if you have the stuff in your house? i've heard that it smells horrible. >> it does, robin. good morning to you. again, this is not all kinds of chinese dry wall but this particular brand was imported between 2005 and 2007. the main thing to look out for are corroded wires and pipes. you can see in the picture we're about to show you how the copper has turned black because of it. homeowners have also report add rotten egg smell, sickness and failed appliances. the coach of the new orleans saints even says most of his house was built with it. >> we had five computer failures, we're on our fourth hard drive right now. we had 13 air conditioning service calls, three different coil failures. we're on our third microwave oven panel. we had to install a second set of fire lines, a second alarm system.

>> robin, so far there have been more than 2,000 complaints in 32 states, d.c. and puerto rico. >> isn't that frightening? you think about what that's doing to microwaves and his wiring, what's it doing to you? some of these people have had to leave their homes apparently. the dry wall will need to be replaced. so who pays for that? >> robin, there's a massive class action lawsuit against the manufacturer and the deadline to join that is next wednesday but florida senator ben nelson says the chinese government should eventually be held responsible. here so far they are cooperating with the investigation. in the meantime, nelson says they're working on a way to get people tax help. >> they're going to put copper and a silver screening test homeowners can put in their homes and if it turns black they're pretty sure the irs will make that available for a casualty deduction on their income tax return. >> what more else you can do

here the government is saying you should contact your insurance company but, robin, some of the cases they have refused to reimburse homeowners. we've posted a link, by the way, with a lot more information in the important website section at cnn.com/robin. >> it doesn't seem fair the h e homeowner would be left holding the wag. >> it's tough. >> richard, thank you. >> sure. you could really see a mad house at the mall friday. retailers are expecting black friday shopping to soar this year. this is brand-new this morning. mess lang in for jennifer westhoven. i'm a little surprised because of the economy the way it is. >> but people are searching for deals. so if you're planning to set your alarm clock on friday, trying to snag some of those deals, you are going to be surrounded by endless lines of bargain shoppers not just on friday but actually saturday and sunday as well. retailers, in fact, are predicting they could see a double digit increase this year over last year. there was a survey done by the national retail federation that said 57 million people are saying they're going to be

hitting the stores friday through sunday and that is up 16% from a year ago. they are heading to the department stores and big wox stores. cyber monday is to online retailers what black friday is to the brick and mortar stores. you may notice retailers trying to push their holiday promotions far beyond the monday after thanksgiving. the deals are good in a bad economy. you have jcpenney saying the discounts for clothes and electronics running through tuesday online and walmart.com is planning cyber week, one analyst says in addition to the sales, make the most of your shopping experience. look for other incentives like free shipping. don't miss out on that. robin? >> very good. melissa, thank you. people are starting to head to the airport. what you can do to protect yourself from possibly getting swine flu on a flight. fright flight. and speaking of

i know, you're like, okay, i'm just getting ready to fly home or fly somewhere for thanksgiving. i'm going to ask you this. can you get swine flu on the plane on the way home for thanksgiving? well, a former cdc chief says that the chances are low unless you're close to someone who is coughing or sneezing all over you. the plane's ventilation system removes airborne germs. good to know. people near the infected passenger can get sick. you should use facemasks, tissues and hand sanitizers and avoid touching door knobs and hand rails. good luck trying to find facemasks, though. you have to see this video. a man accused of leading police on a high-speed chase jumped off a bridge and went for a swim.

stork craft is voluntarily recalling drop side cribs, linked to the deaths of four babies. the consumer products safety commission is urging parents to stop using these cribs until they get the free repair kit. for more information go right now on our website, cnn.com/robin. expect to see even larger crowds at the stores this friday. retail groups project a 16% jump in black friday shoppers, up to 134 million people have said they will shop on friday, saturd saturday, or sunday after thanksgiving. today south carolina legislators will start debating a measure to get mark sanford out of office.

a panel will focus on sanford's five-day absence in june. sanford later admitted he ran off to argentina to be with his mistress. he's accused of using taxpayer money to do so. astronauts are getting a few hours off. yesterday's space walk was the third and the final one. they will undock tomorrow but the crew will spend thanksgiving in orbit before landing in florida on friday. that is a quick check of just a few of the many, many stories we're following this morning. are you packing already for your thanksgiving trip? you're an early bird. i'm robin meade. morning. rhode island's roman catholic bishop is speaking out about representative patrick kennedy's claim that he was banned from taking communion. kennedy told "the providence journal" bishop thomas tobin made the order because kennedy supports abortion rights. tobin says that he never ordered the ban. he says he just asked kennedy not to get communion in a letter that he wrote to the congressman in 2007. >> i work very hard to protect

the confidentiality of correspondence so i was stunned to find out he was going to reveal the contents of that letter. >> well, kennedy has not commented yet on tobin's latest claim. they have been in heated exchanges for weeks over health care reform and abortion laws. new this morning americans are split almost dead even on whether to send troops to afghanistan. president obama is considering deploying 34,000 americans and in a new cnn/research opinion poll, 50% favor it. 49% oppose it. if he sent fewer troops, the favor would fall to 42%. president obama is expected to announce his decision within days. thousands of people in 32 states have reported problems with imported chinese dry wall in their homes. new studies show that it is likely responsible for a whole host of problems like appliances

failing, pipes and wiring corroding. correspondent richard lui, this is not fun stuff here. so they also think that the dry wall has made them sick. >> worried about health there, robin. they've reported similar symptoms like itchy skin, difficulty breathing, headaches and bloody noses as well. one florida man is living in a tent on the roof of his building to avoid the side effects here. >> when i come back here, my tongue feels like it's coated. i get a real scratchy sensation in the back of my throat and my chest just feels like there's a weight on it. >> so it's important to note, though, that there's no proof drywall is making people sick, but a company that took air samples from homes with the drywall says it's possible the level could have contributed to the health problems. >> just a scary thought. so if you have the stuff in your house, what are you supposed to do? first of all, you have to figure out whether it is in your house. >> exactly. not all kinds of chinese dry wall are affected here so we

posted a link. we can figure out if you have the affected brand. go and check that out. if you do, toxicologists say you should leave your home and if you're having health problems see a doctor right away. the consumer products safety commission also says you should notify state officials and contact your insurance company and a building inspector as well, robin. >> richard, thank you so much. man, what a pain for these people who have this in their homes. a man accused of killing his daughter because he thought she'd become too westernized is is pleading not guilty. the iraqi immigrant entered the plea in court in arizona yesterday. he's been charged with assault. prosecutors are expected to bring tougher charges later. he's accused of running over his own daughter and her boyfriend's mom. many young adults are living with mom and dad. 13% of parents with grown children say that at least one of their kids moved back home

within the past year. they're called the boom rang kids. 10% say that the bad economy is why they're living with their parents again. a turkey named courage is probably the luckiest bird in america. the north carolina turkey has been chosen to be granted a pardon by the president. the turkey and its owners will be flown to the white house for the annual ceremony and then often to disneyland for a vacation where courage will be the grand marshal of a parade. because that won't be stressful because that's normal for a turkey. 35 minutes past the hour. ok okay. let's find out how your day is tuesday. i know a lot of you are leaving for your trips on wednesday and you have a lot to get done today. hi, bob. it's a big travel day, too, talking about tuesday before thanksgiving. it's huge. here is what it looks like. some major cities where the weather will be a hampering factor for you especially at the airport. we had the rain right now, pockets of it, eastern parts of p.a., and into new york state. more showers out there, too.

more around philadelphia and in towards the jersey side. you get into new york city with your metro radar, you're dry from manhattan now but down to the south a pocket of rain around point pleasant beach moves up to the north. showers coming in later today. that's new york, philadelphia and d.c. let me take you live to atlanta. major airport. the busiest one in the country, foggy conditions to start out the morning. visibility down at around six miles. three miles when you look at uptown where you're going to see basically foggy conditions all morning and low clouds for the rest of the day so count on some delays right at atlanta's hartsfield-jackson. up to the west a big swirling mass of rain and it moves all the way in through iowa but the heaviest rain is just west of kc, moving down i-70, very slowly. it will affect your city within the next couple of hours. up to the north and to des moines, a radar sweep going on by. picks up a little bit when you get to the state line with minnesota but minneapolis right now just some pockets of rain that all fills in so we'll get delays there, delays in chicago

some of what's gone on in her personal life and giving the album good reviews. rolling stone calls it one of the best pop albums of the year. good for her. former vice president dick cheney is blasting the obama administration for moving the 9/11 trial to new york. cheney says it's a big mistake to try them just blocks away from where the world trade center stood. during a radio interview he said that the trial should be held by a military tribunal because it was an act of war. >> can't for the life of me figure out what holder's intent here in terms of having khalid shaikh mohammed. they'll use it as a platform to argue their case. they don't have a defense to speak of. it'll be a place for them to stand up and spread the terrible

when you're on our website click on important websites icon. news about a big jump in home sales released yesterday morning and this was about last months' sales, the dow rose 132 points. the nasdaq, s&p 500, also closed higher monday afternoon. the national association of realtors reported a 10% jump in home resales. today stocks could be affected by the updated numbers on the nation's gdp of gross domestic product. and banks are turning now to debit cards as a way to generate more fees from you. next year americans will be spending the estimate more than $1.6 trillion with their debit cards, two-thirds more than back in 2006. this is all according to a trade publication. and banks are noticing habits. if you're part of the program, earn points every time you use your debit card but, of course, it comes at a price, right? as much as $55 a year n. one

a man is charged with murder after allegedly stabbing somebody on the subway in new york. now it may have happened because of an argument over a seat. police say the suspect stabbed the victim in front of passengers over the weekend. now the suspect's brother tells the nos"the new york daily news a family man that was recently hurt at work. >> i think we should look less at the actions of the victim here and think about this perpetrator. from my understanding he had had a fall two weeks before from two

stories and had a head injury and he apparently was medicated so although there are reports from his family saying he hasn't had mental health problems in the past, now we're dealing with a possible head injury, we're dealing with medication and we all know how that can alter personality. police say that the argument between the two men started when the suspect asked the victim to move his bag from his seat so he could sit down. the suspect has pled not guilty. peta is trying to get more people to go vegan. the group has women in sexy outfits giving away tofurkey, a tofu-based alternative to turkey. turkeys are abused in farms and that 40 million of them are killed every thanksgiving. okay. i'm always amused at the outfits. is that like a sexy pilgrim? >> clearly a french maid? maybe it is a pilgrim. >> i think it's a sexy pilgrim,

more than a million clicks on this one. we found it on youtube. pretty good. people are so talented, aren't they? a woman is now getting credit for a record 73 years after it was taken away from her. >> her name is gretle bergman. it was june of 1936. the record wasn't allowed and she was banned from competing on the german olympic team because she's jewish. now living as margaret lambert in new york, she moved there in 1937 and changed her name, she has learned germany has restored her record. the track and field association calls it an act of justice, but she adds it doesn't make up for the past. lambert's story is told in the u.s. holocaust museum. the 95-year-old says she still can't bring herself to watch the olympics. do basketball referees really favor the home team? the study says yes.

why shopping friday. expected to soar. we'll get to that. what an important story here. it your baby sleeps in a stork craft drop side crib, stop using it immediately. baby, getting trapped, some died. the consumer product safety commission announced a voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million cribs. it says four babies suffocated when they got trapped in the side of the crib. one mother described the horror of losing her son like this. >> my brother and i did cpr on him until the ambulance got there. >> how awful. look at that little baby. melissa long is in for jen whey you need to know about this huge recall. what's wrong with these cribs? >> the plastic around the drop side can break. that's what's wrong with these cribs. you mentioned that this recall is large. a voluntary recall of 2.1 million of them. expects parents not only in the u.s., also in canada. the i mentioned the plastic.

dad. ed pew research center finds that 13% of parents with grown children say that at least one of their kids moved back home in the past year. they're called boomerang kids. 10% say that the poor economy is why they're living with their mom and dads again. thousands of americans could have dangerous drywall in their homes, and i hope you're not one of them. three new government studies confirm there is a strong link between a certain type of chinese drywall and metal corrosion around the house. correspondent richard lui. how do you know if it's in your house or not? >> tough to tell because you have paint on top of that. robin, this is not including all kind of chinese drywall, but this particular brand was imported to the united states between 2005 and 2007. if you can see the back side of it, it will say made in china as well. the main things to look out for are, as you are saying, corroded wires and pipes. homeowners also report add rotten egg smell, sickness as well as failed appliances.

not so robust in the third quarter as previously thought. the commerce department revised reading says the economy group at a 2.8% pace instead of the original 3.5% estimate. what does gdp do, measure goods and services. banks are turning to debit cards as a way to generate more fees from you. next year americans, it's estimated, will spend more than $1.6 trillion with deb ed cards. two-thirds more than back in 2006. all according to a trade publication. banks are picking up setting rewards programs. if you're part of a program, you can earn points every time you use your debit card. similar to credit cards, right? but it comes at a price. as much as $55 a year and, in fact, one case, you had to actually spend more than $33,000 to earn just $100 off airfare. something else interesting, robin. this year more than any other

brand-new this morning, projections are out. it shows the number of shoppers is expected to soar. discussion upcoming. first, if your baby sleeps in a stork craft drop side crib, stop using it immediately. babies are getting trapped and some have died. the consumer products safety commission announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million cribs. it says four babies have suffocated when they got trapped in the side of the crib. here's one mother describing the horror of losing her son like this. >> my brother and i did cpr on him until the ambulance got there. >> i just can't imagine what she's been through. melissa long is in for general with what you need to know. >> it is huge. 2.1 million being recalled. the problem on these stork craft cribs is that there's some plastic hardware on the drop side that can break and then sometimes the drop side just isn't properly installed.

it for that group. so you potentially wouldn't be covered for mammograms until the age of 50. >> the disconnect is they're saying it doesn't set policy. that's technically correct. but secretary sebelius said it does not influence, does not determine what is covered, and that's where she is flat wrong. and either she didn't know the bill or she is sort of covering it up. i think that this is serious and it is not a republican or a democrat thing. it is about some details in this bill. and there are probably many others that could have and in this one it will have a negative impact on people's health. >> you can see what women think of waiting for mammograms until the age of 50. a new "usa today" poll finds that 76% say they disagree with the recommendation of waiting for routine mammograms until they're 50. on our facebook page, their recommendation will change as soon as someone on that panel loses their mother, sister or

thousands of americans could have dangerous dry wall in their homes. three new government studies confirm there is a strong link between a certain kind of chinese dry wall and metal corrosion. correspondent richard lui joins us now. how would you even know if this stuff is in your house? >> exactly. there's paint on top of it. you'd have to go on the backside. it says made in china. it's not all kinds of chinese dry wall. this particular brand was imported into the united states between 2005 and 2007. the main thing to look out for are corroded wiresown oeowners rotten egg smell, sickness and failed aappliances. the coach of the new orleans saints says his house was built with it. >> we had 13 air-conditioning service calls. three different oil failure. we're on our third microwave oven panel. we had to install a second set of phone lines, a second alarm

the belgium man now communicates with his finger and a touch screen. he wrote, i was angry at first, but i learned how to live with it. >> we just developed a whole documentary about this called "cheating death." we visited lots of nursing homes and lots of extended care facilities. that's where studies like this have really been done. what they find is up to one-third of patients in those settings are misdiagnosed. they carry the diagnosis of persistent or permanent vegetative state but they go on to recover. meaning it wasn't persistent or permanent ever. >> something else. one researcher says many misdiagnoses happen because doctors look at a patient's behavior instead of using standardized tests. south carolina legislators are debating a measure this afternoon to get governor mark sanford out of office. a panel will focus on his five-day absence back in june. sanford later admitted he ran off to argentina to be with his mistress. he's accused of using taxpayer money to do so.

the broadest measure of economic activity in the u.s. says there was growth at an annual pace of 2.8% in the last quarter. that's less than the original estimate of 3.5%. further confirmation of the first quarter of growth in more than a year despite continued weakness in the labor market and weak consumer confidence. a separate report shows home prices rose 0.3% in september and more than 3% between july and september. prices in 19 of the 20 largest u.s. cities grew. the lone exception? las vegas where prices fell, robin, for the 37th straight month. in other words -- >> that's like three years! >> it is tough to sell a home there. the national retail federation says 57 million of us crazy people will go shopping on black friday. the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season. that's up 16% from last year. the big question is, will we be buying anything?
