all right. good morning, tuesday. for those of you halfway through your workweek, look at it that way. i'm robin meade. it is being called the biggest crib recall ever. what a safety group says millions of cribs could trap or suffocate babies. plus, the controversial new mammogram guidelines could now put a big monkey wrench in the health care reform debate. the uproar that could affect your coverage. first, though, be regardless of the economy, you know why you should expect to see a lot of company while shopping on friday. black friday shopping is expected to soar. more on what economists think is behind that expected jump. first, a big story here. if your baby sleeps in a store

craft drop side crib, babies are getting trapped and some have died. more than 2.1 million cribs are being recalled. four babies have suffocated when they got trapped in the side of the crib. one mom talked about what happened to her baby. >> my brother and i did cpr on him until the ambulance got there. >> and i couldn't tell from that sound, did her baby die? to the producers? okay, her baby, unfortunately, passed away. obviously this is a very scary thought for parents. melissa long is in for jennifer with what you need to know about this huge recall. melissa? >> good morning. unfortunately, several babies did die because of this problem, this glitch, robin.

cnn has learned that the so-called independent panel that recommended last week women should wait until the age of 50 to get routine mammograms could influence your medical coverage. a section of the senate bill, health care bill, actually mentions the task force. it says mammograms between the ages 40 and 50 are not a priority, this task force, but it doesn't recommend that insurers deny coverage or offer it for that group. despite what the white house officials have said, you potentially would not be covered for mammograms until the age of 50. >> the disconnect is they're saying it doesn't set policy that's technically correct. but secretary sebelius does not say it's not covered. either she didn't know the bill or she is sort of covering it up. i think that this is serious and it is not a republican or a democrat thing. it is about some details in this bill and there are probably many others that could have, and in

this one it will have, a negative impact on people's health. >> we can see what people think of waiting until the age of 50. a new "usa today" poll finds 76% say that they disagree with the recommendations. but women may think they're more susceptible to cancer than they really are. we'll have more on that. the man who was apparently shoved into a glass window during an arrest will be in court today. video shows a transit officer and michael gibson smashing into a train platform window. both were hurt. gibson is charged with resisting arrest and battery but his lawyer is suing for police brutality and civil rights violations. >> the person was not given any opportunity at all to surrender, wasn't given the opportunity to comply. he was immediately grabbed. now i think that's improper and that's wrong and that's how you create potentially dangerous

situations. >> police are asking for additional videos that may have been taken of the arrests. witnesses say gibson seemed drunk and was threatening people. his family is said he is bi-polar. the officer is now on leave. what a story here. new this morning over a seven-year period there has been a 90% jump in the spread of a dangerous super bug. mrsa is resistant to common antibiotics. reuters is is saying new research found more people are now getting the bug outside hospitals. so how can experts stop it from spreading? researchers suggest new tests so that patients can be diagnosed and treated quickly. president obama will announce within days whether he will send more troops to afghanistan. the white house says that he had a final meeting with his national security team last night. one option reportedly calls for 34,000 more troops a. new poll this morning shows that 45% of americans support the war.

a cnn opinion research corporation poll says 52% oppose it. a celebrity chef gets hit in the face by a flying ham. you can't make this stuff up. the poor thing, this happened to paula dean during a holiday food drive. first she tossed a ham and when she wasn't looking somebody tossed one back her way and that has got to hurt. >> i just got hit with a hog so what can i expect? ran head-on into a hog. >> you're one of those people who can laugh about anything. >> you have to laugh. >> the hams were donated for a thanksgiving dinner for the hungry and homeless in atlanta. i hope she's doing all right. >> she is a hero in my household, paula deen. no doubt about it. my mother-in-law is her. >> her sons are friends of the show, too. she's doing all right this morning.

what does she say? a little butter makes everything better. if you're doing any traveling today, it's a big travel day for the holiday for thanksgiving. one off the coast of the eastern seaboard, another one wrapping up around kansas city and in between high pressure with a lot of fog so the eastern half of the nation is going to be tough going anywhere really especially when you get into philadelphia for the morning and new york city, too. that's long island. showers out of point pleasant moving into the city later today. you see the winds out of the northeast again so travel delays in new york. you're going to get them there. boston, too, with the rain showers coming up through. chicago, the fog is out there. look at the heavy rain wrapping up just west of kansas city. radar picture down i-70. wet road. come to the north, more wet stuff. into des moines and western parts of iowa and the showers get all the way up as far north as minneapolis. a little bit further north than that, too. that's something we're watching and the dense fog is out there

less than a mile high visibility at o'hare. more on that, robin, in a half hour. we've told you about people who have had to move out of their homes because of dangerous dry wall, stinky dry wall, too. we're learning just how unsafe this material can be. and a man accused of leading police on be a chase jumped off a bridge and went for a swim.

confirmed there is a strong link between a certain kind of chinese dry wall and metal corrosion. correspondent richard lui joins us now. how do you know if you have the stuff in your house? i've heard that it smells horrible. >> it does, robin. good morning to you. again, this is not all kinds of chinese dry wall but this particular brand was imported between 2005 and 2007. the main thing to look out for are corroded wires and pipes. you can see in the picture we're about to show you how the copper has turned black because of it. homeowners have also report add rotten egg smell, sickness and failed appliances. the coach of the new orleans saints even says most of his house was built with it. >> we had five computer failures, we're on our fourth hard drive right now. we had 13 air conditioning service calls, three different coil failures. we're on our third microwave oven panel. we had to install a second set of fire lines, a second alarm system.

>> robin, so far there have been more than 2,000 complaints in 32 states, d.c. and puerto rico. >> isn't that frightening? you think about what that's doing to microwaves and his wiring, what's it doing to you? some of these people have had to leave their homes apparently. the dry wall will need to be replaced. so who pays for that? >> robin, there's a massive class action lawsuit against the manufacturer and the deadline to join that is next wednesday but florida senator ben nelson says the chinese government should eventually be held responsible. here so far they are cooperating with the investigation. in the meantime, nelson says they're working on a way to get people tax help. >> they're going to put copper and a silver screening test homeowners can put in their homes and if it turns black they're pretty sure the irs will make that available for a casualty deduction on their income tax return. >> what more else you can do

the confidentiality of correspondence so i was stunned to find out he was going to reveal the contents of that letter. >> well, kennedy has not commented yet on tobin's latest claim. they have been in heated exchanges for weeks over health care reform and abortion laws. new this morning americans are split almost dead even on whether to send troops to afghanistan. president obama is considering deploying 34,000 americans and in a new cnn/research opinion poll, 50% favor it. 49% oppose it. if he sent fewer troops, the favor would fall to 42%. president obama is expected to announce his decision within days. thousands of people in 32 states have reported problems with imported chinese dry wall in their homes. new studies show that it is likely responsible for a whole host of problems like appliances

failing, pipes and wiring corroding. correspondent richard lui, this is not fun stuff here. so they also think that the dry wall has made them sick. >> worried about health there, robin. they've reported similar symptoms like itchy skin, difficulty breathing, headaches and bloody noses as well. one florida man is living in a tent on the roof of his building to avoid the side effects here. >> when i come back here, my tongue feels like it's coated. i get a real scratchy sensation in the back of my throat and my chest just feels like there's a weight on it. >> so it's important to note, though, that there's no proof drywall is making people sick, but a company that took air samples from homes with the drywall says it's possible the level could have contributed to the health problems. >> just a scary thought. so if you have the stuff in your house, what are you supposed to do? first of all, you have to figure out whether it is in your house. >> exactly. not all kinds of chinese dry wall are affected here so we

states have reported problems with imported chinese drywall in their homes. new studies show it is likely responsible for a whole host of problems, like appliances failing, pipes and wires corroding. correspondent richard lui joins us now. many of these homeowners think it made them sick, too. >> yeah, that's right, robin. good morning. they've been reporting here similar symptoms, itchy skin, difficulty breathing, headaches and bloody noses as well. one florida man, for instance is living in a tent on the roof of his building 20 avoid these side effects. >> when i come back here, my tongue feels like it's coated. i get a real scratchy sensation in the back of my throat and my chest just feels like there's a weight on it. >> so, robin, it's important to note there's no proof the drywall is making people sick, but a company that took air samples from homes with the drywall says it's possible the levels of hydrogen sulfide and formaldehyde could have contributed to the health problems. >> the poor man can't even live in his own house?

not so robust in the third quarter as previously thought. the commerce department revised reading says the economy group at a 2.8% pace instead of the original 3.5% estimate. what does gdp do, measure goods and services. banks are turning to debit cards as a way to generate more fees from you. next year americans, it's estimated, will spend more than $1.6 trillion with deb ed cards. two-thirds more than back in 2006. all according to a trade publication. banks are picking up setting rewards programs. if you're part of a program, you can earn points every time you use your debit card. similar to credit cards, right? but it comes at a price. as much as $55 a year and, in fact, one case, you had to actually spend more than $33,000 to earn just $100 off airfare. something else interesting, robin. this year more than any other

brand-new this morning, projections are out. it shows the number of shoppers is expected to soar. discussion upcoming. first, if your baby sleeps in a stork craft drop side crib, stop using it immediately. babies are getting trapped and some have died. the consumer products safety commission announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million cribs. it says four babies have suffocated when they got trapped in the side of the crib. here's one mother describing the horror of losing her son like this. >> my brother and i did cpr on him until the ambulance got there. >> i just can't imagine what she's been through. melissa long is in for general with what you need to know. >> it is huge. 2.1 million being recalled. the problem on these stork craft cribs is that there's some plastic hardware on the drop side that can break and then sometimes the drop side just isn't properly installed.

it for that group. so you potentially wouldn't be covered for mammograms until the age of 50. >> the disconnect is they're saying it doesn't set policy. that's technically correct. but secretary sebelius said it does not influence, does not determine what is covered, and that's where she is flat wrong. and either she didn't know the bill or she is sort of covering it up. i think that this is serious and it is not a republican or a democrat thing. it is about some details in this bill. and there are probably many others that could have and in this one it will have a negative impact on people's health. >> you can see what women think of waiting for mammograms until the age of 50. a new "usa today" poll finds that 76% say they disagree with the recommendation of waiting for routine mammograms until they're 50. on our facebook page, their recommendation will change as soon as someone on that panel loses their mother, sister or

thousands of americans could have dangerous dry wall in their homes. three new government studies confirm there is a strong link between a certain kind of chinese dry wall and metal corrosion. correspondent richard lui joins us now. how would you even know if this stuff is in your house? >> exactly. there's paint on top of it. you'd have to go on the backside. it says made in china. it's not all kinds of chinese dry wall. this particular brand was imported into the united states between 2005 and 2007. the main thing to look out for are corroded wiresown oeowners rotten egg smell, sickness and failed aappliances. the coach of the new orleans saints says his house was built with it. >> we had 13 air-conditioning service calls. three different oil failure. we're on our third microwave oven panel. we had to install a second set of phone lines, a second alarm

the belgium man now communicates with his finger and a touch screen. he wrote, i was angry at first, but i learned how to live with it. >> we just developed a whole documentary about this called "cheating death." we visited lots of nursing homes and lots of extended care facilities. that's where studies like this have really been done. what they find is up to one-third of patients in those settings are misdiagnosed. they carry the diagnosis of persistent or permanent vegetative state but they go on to recover. meaning it wasn't persistent or permanent ever. >> something else. one researcher says many misdiagnoses happen because doctors look at a patient's behavior instead of using standardized tests. south carolina legislators are debating a measure this afternoon to get governor mark sanford out of office. a panel will focus on his five-day absence back in june. sanford later admitted he ran off to argentina to be with his mistress. he's accused of using taxpayer money to do so.

the broadest measure of economic activity in the u.s. says there was growth at an annual pace of 2.8% in the last quarter. that's less than the original estimate of 3.5%. further confirmation of the first quarter of growth in more than a year despite continued weakness in the labor market and weak consumer confidence. a separate report shows home prices rose 0.3% in september and more than 3% between july and september. prices in 19 of the 20 largest u.s. cities grew. the lone exception? las vegas where prices fell, robin, for the 37th straight month. in other words -- >> that's like three years! >> it is tough to sell a home there. the national retail federation says 57 million of us crazy people will go shopping on black friday. the unofficial kickoff to the holiday shopping season. that's up 16% from last year. the big question is, will we be buying anything?

britain's build-up to the iraq war. it could take months to question all of the witnesses. including former prime minister tony blair. now, he'll be asked whether he secretly backed president bush's war plan a year before parliament okayed joining the invasion. the panel's main focus is making sure the same mistakes don't happen again. seven firefighters were hurt trying to put out this fire. this is an apartment complex in dallas. we're told it is still burning today. fire officials say it's been an exhausting fire where the crews are constantly being rotated. the complex was under construction. at least people were not inside. the firefighters are expected to be okay. you could eat your thanksgiving turkey and get a buzz from the same thing. well, one new york restaurant is selling a wild turkey soaked with fruit flavored vodka. >> just actually because of all the flavors we use in the vodka,
