threats against american interests. now the embassy is not saying if there is any specific threat, and it's unclear when it might reopen. the british embassy in the yemeni capital is also closed today. yemen is pledge mortgage cooperation in the fight against terrorism. and experts on the region warn it will take a lot of time and resources to root out al qaeda in that country. >> the al qaeda threat is not simply to u.s. interests, but very much to yemeni interests as well. the people of yemen have suffered a great deal in terms of economic well-being because of al qaeda's activity there's. so that's number one. i think the seconds thing is that based on that action by yemenese security forces are likely to be much more effective in countering the al qaeda threat in yemen than direct action by u.s. military forces. >> there are no easy, no obvious solutions in yemen.

but i think one of the most important things for the u.s. to remember is that it's not going to defeat al qaeda in yemen today, tomorrow, next month, or even next year. it's going to be a very long, a very hard slog. there is no magic missile solution. >> why do you say that? >> well, al qaeda is someone that the u.s. has already defeated once in yemen. it defeated it really in '01 to '03, and al qaeda came back after a prison break in february of 2006. so if the u.s. continues to go down the same road, it's going to get the same results, fighting difficult incarnations of al qaeda in yemen every few years. >> general david petraeus met with yemen's president yesterday. a senior u.s. government official says they discussed the latest intelligence on al qaeda in that country. the man accused of trying to set off a bomb on a northwest airlines flight 253 got aboard the plane because of lapses in security. now that's the assessment of a top counterterrorism official.

umar farouk abdulmutallab boarded the flight for detroit, despite several indications that he might pose a threat. the white house adviser leading a review says there was no warning sign pointing to an eminent attack. republicans, however, continue to attack president obama's response to that attempted bombing. >> clearly, the system didn't work. we had a problem in terms of why abdulmutallab got on that plane there is no smoking gun evidence that says he was terrorist, he was going to carry out an attack on this aircraft. we had bits and pieces of information that didn't give us the clarity we needed to match it to abdulmutallab. what we need to do as an intelligence community, as a government is bring those disparate bits and piece of information together so we prevent mr. abdulmutallab from getting on plane, which need to take the politics out of this. but there is no question the president has downplayed the

engagement with cox last sunday. mexican police say they have captured the head of the notorious drug cartel. carlos beltran leyva was arrested wednesday. authorities say leyva was taken into custody after he showed a fake driver's license with an alias they knew he had been using. his arrest comes just a week after his brother arturo was killed in a shoot-out outside mexico city. iran has issued an ultimatum over its nuclear program. it's threatening to enrich nuclear fuel on its own if the west does not renegotiate a u.n.-backed deal by the end of january. this demand came two days after iran defied a deadline by the u.s. and other security council members. the west has been trying to get iran to swap its enriched uranium for nuclear fuel. the concern is iran may use its uranium to make nuclear weapons. iran says it needs the fuel for research. there is no relief in sight for parts of brazil where heavy rains and mudslides are blamed

for dozens of deaths. officials say at least 60 people have been killed since rain started pounding southern brazil on wednesday. mudslides buried entire homes and shut down a major highway. rescuers are looking for survivors, sometimes digging with their bare hands. and it is heartbreaking work. but rescuers celebrated when they dug out a toddler whose entire family was killed at home, but the little girl later died in the hospital. one of our ireporters had his camera rolling when an ignited fire tracker went off course with dramatic results. what happened to the crowd at this new year's eve celebration.

the boy kept jumping in front of his sister's moving car, and shen she would slam on the breaks. but police say the last time he did it, she couldn't stop in time and she ran over him. he later died at a hospital. friends and family of a missing utah woman are turning to social media networks in an attempt to find her. starting tomorrow people looking for susan powell will begin a three-day blitz on twitter and youtube. organizers are asking facebook users to turn their profile pictures to a purple ribbon. powell went missing on december 7, and police have focused on her husband, although he is not officially a suspect in her disappearance. he says he was camping with the couple's young sons at the time his wife went missing. a u.s. snowboarding champion is in critical condition today after a training accident left him with a traumatic brain injury. kevin pierce was hurt thursday as he trained in park city, utah for next week's qualifying events. pearce was in the middle of a

maneuver when he landed on his head. he was wearing a helmet. doctors say their main concern now is monitoring his brain for signs of swelling. they say pearce has a long recovery ahead of him. a delta flight from boston to new york returned to logan international airport when a pilot smelled smoke in the cockpit. a delta spokesman says the pilot turned back eight minutes into the flight. the odor was gone by the time the plane landed back in boston, and all of the passengers were rebooked on a later flight. delta is investigating the cause of the smoke smell. the fire is finally out at an oil well near austin, texas, but it wasn't easy to do. that fire started yesterday afternoon with two 500 barrel tanks. crews moved in, but had to pull back because it was just too dangerous. the flames spread to a few other tanks, but they were finally extinguished by early evening. about 2,000 barrels of oil burned. now it's not clear how the fire started, but no one was hurt.

ireporter reinhartman got more than he expected while taping a new year's eve fireworks show in thailand. one of the shells misfire and fell back on to other fireworks. >> wow. hartman says some people were screaming in panic, while worst cheering. he saw some people with minor burns, but luckily no serious injuries. so what is another inch or four? yeah, that's how much snow people in rhode island could get today on top of the 7 to 10 inches that has already fallen over parts of the northeast. most main roads were cleared for drivers, but the side streets in many neighborhoods were covered with snow. some people, though, took that as an opportunity to make some money.

for dozens of deaths. at least 60 people have been killed since rain started pounding southern brazil on wednesday. mudslides buried entire homes and shut down a major highway. rescuers are looking for survivors, sometimes digging with their bare hands. and it is heart-breaking work. but rescuers celebrated when they dug out a toddler whose entire family was killed at home but the little girl later died in the hospital. i'm meteorologist reynolds wolf and we've got a two-part weather story. part one will deal with an area of low pressure up in new england bringing heavy snowstorm and can provide up to a foot of snow. the second part of the story, the bitter cold that's going to be moving into at least half the nation. let's start with the snowfall first. it all stems from this area of low pressure which is not only drawing moisture from the great lakes and the sane lawrence seaway but also the atlantic ocean. the low will pick up that moisture. as it falls through the lower levels of the atmosphere, we'll see some snow pile up. that coupled with very windy conditions could give you nearly

police in arizona say a teenaged girl killed her 17-year-old brother when she accidentally ran over him with the car. now, authorities say the two were playing a dangerous game at a mall in mesa. the boy kept jumping in front of the sister's moving car and then she would slam on the brakes. but police say the last time he did it, she couldn't stop in time and ran over him and he later died at a hospital. friends and family of a missing utah woman are turning to social media networks in an attempt to find her. starting tomorrow, people looking for susan powell will begin a three-day blitz on twitter and youtube. organizers are asking facebook users to turn their profile pictures to a purple ribbon. powell went missing on december 7th and police have focused on her husband. although he's not officially a suspect in her disappearance.

in the hospital. i'm meteorologist reynolds wolf for hln. we've really got a two-part weather story today. part one is going to deal with an area of low pressure up in new england that's going to bring heavy snowfall and could provide up to a foot of snow in some places. second part of the story bitter cold moving into at least half the nation. it all stems from this area of low pressure which is not only drawing moisture from the great lakes and st. lawrence sea wae but also the atlantic ocean. the low is picking up that moisture. at that moisture falls through the lower levels of the atmosphere we'll see snow pile up. that coupled with very windy conditions could give you whiteout conditions on parts of 95 not to mention the back roads. same deal can be in store for you along the finger lakes back in parts of new york state. maybe even parts of pennsylvania, back near erie. cleveland would see heavy snowfall today. when you look at area of high pressure forming over the western great lakes, that high working with the low is going to bring in a lot of cold air into

the boy kept jumping in front of his sister's moving car. then she would slam on the brakes. police say the last time he did it, she couldn't stop in time and ran over him, and he later died at a hospital. friends and family of a missing utah woman are turning to social media networks in an attempt to find her. starting tomorrow, people looking for susan powell will begin a three-day blitz on twitter and youtube. organizers are asking facebook users to turn their profile pictures to a purple ribbon. powell went missing on december 7th. police have focused on her husband, although he's not officially a suspect in her disappearance. he says he was camping with the couple's young sons at the time his wife went missing. a delta flight from boston to new york returned to logan international airport when a pilot smelled smoke in the cockpit. a delta spokesman says the pilot turned back eight minutes into the flight. the odor was gone by the time the plane landed back in boston, and all of the passengers were rebooked on a later flight.

delta is investigating the cause of the smoke smell. the fire is finally out at an oil well near austin, texas, but it wasn't easy to do. the fire started yesterday afternoon with two 500-barrel tanks. crews moved in but had to pull back because it was just too dangerous. the flames spread to a few other tanks, but they were finally extinguished by early evening. about 2,000 barrels of oil burned. now, it's not clear how the fire started, but no one was hurt. a woman was browsing through photos in a shoplift store when she came upon a very rare find. and now why she's calling the pictures her best christmas present of the year.
