police in england have arrested three men who they say threatened staff aboard a plane bound for dubai. the men were arrested on suspicion of making a bomb threat and are in jail in london right now. the incident happened last night as the plane was getting ready to take off from heathrow airport. all of the passengers were taken off the plane while police searched it with bomb-sniffing dogs. they found nothing suspicious, though. heathrow airport remained open during the incident. we have been talking about the bone-chilling temperatures that have blanketed much of the country now. how long will it last? meteorologist bonnie schneider is here. any relief? >> susan, not this weekend. we still are looking at another bitter blast of arctic air. fridged conditions across the country, particularly in the south, where temperatures are in the 20s. the teens, and feeling like they're in the single digits in parts of the southeast. and that's i big concern for the citrus growers in florida. because on sunday night we're

going to see those temperatures sustained for a long period of time in the 20s. you can see a front has now passed through. and without any sort of cloud cover overnight, the temperatures can really plummet. let's talk about that. high temperatures today are going to be cold unless you're in los angeles. that's where it's 78 degrees. atlanta's high is only 29. 53 in miami. 24 in boston. so we're actually very close to areas in the northeast and the southeast. and then as we head across the country, we are looking at some nice conditions if you're looking to get away and maybe escape the cold weather, you'll probably want to head to southern california. that's where it's 78. 69 in phoenix, arizona. seattle at 53 degrees. then across the midwest, the bitter chill continues. kansas city, you'll eventually warm up by tuesday and wednesday, but a high today of only 9 degrees. i'm meteorologist bonnie schneider for hln. you may let a bad word slip every now and then. but one san francisco politician is taking it to another level. just updated my facebook status update vowing that in

people who quit smoking may be at a higher risk of developing diabetes. that is according to a new study by johns hopkins university. now it raises two important questions, why would this happen? and what does it mean about tossing out those cigarettes. dr. sanjay gupta takes a look in today's "fit nation" report. >> reporter: first of all, let me say that no one is saying that you shouldn't quit smoking. you obviously should, there's a lot of negative health consequences of smoking. the study looked at what happens to the body in someone who does quit. large study. over ten years i looked at 10,000 people, and they found that people who quit smoking had a 70% increased likelihood of
10:11 am
developing diabetes within six years. if you really take that a step further and figure out why it really primarily had to do with weight gain. these people who were quitting smoking also started to gain weight, on the average between 4 and 10 pounds. and they also gained inches around the waist, about an inch and a quarter. that's on dom nal fat, that's met boughtically active fat. it's the worst kind of fat and can increase your likelihood for diabetes. that seems to be what happened here. if you look at what happens in the bodies of smokers, people who are smoking, they tend to have an increased metabolism, decreased appetite. they also specifically have decreased appetite for sweet foods. and that's in part why they have the weight loss. they don't eat as much. people who stop smoking you tend to see the opposite. the metabolism starts to slow down. they may develop food addictions and oral fixations, all of which lead to more calories consumed. there are things you can do besides smoking to try to get some of those benefits. simply exercising for example, 30 minutes a day.
10:12 am
you're probably going to drive up your metabolism enough to burn the same number of calories. you also build some muscle mass. that fires up irmetabolic engine. as far as food cravings go, there are ways you can more naturally suppress appetite. eat foods that have high protein and high fiber that will decrease your appetite. also keep in mind that thirst is often misperceived for hunger. so simply making sure you're well hydrated all the time will cut down on the number of calories consumed. as far as oral fixation goes, keep plenty of sugar free gum around, carrot sticks, that will help. obesity is probably going to surpass smoking as the number one cause of preventable illness in this country. so these are both big killers and they can both be controlled. most people make new year's resolutions that better themselves or others, right? one san francisco politician is taking his new year's resolution in the opposite direction. city supervisor chris daly has announced he plans to use the "f" word at every board of supervisors meeting this year. he announced his new year's resolution at a board of

a new report is highly critical of the way police in oakland, california, handled the aftermath of a shoot-out that left four officers dead. an independent board says oakland police mismanaged the 2009 shoot-out and that they made a series of poor decisions that may have contributed to the death toll. the shoot-out began last march during a traffic stop involving 26-year-old lavelle nixon. nixon allegedly shot and killed two officers who pulled him over. he ran to a nearby apartment building and eventually shot and killed two s.w.a.t. officers before police shot and killed him.

the hearing. he's facing six federal charges, including an attempt to blow up a plane and an attempt to use weapons of mass destruction. that charge could get him life in prison if he's convicted. his defense didn't challenge the government's request to keep him in pretrial custody. his next court date has not been set yet. it appears that some muslims wanted to make a point that this case has nothing to do with their faith. about 50 of them held a rally outside the courthouse in downtown detroit. they tried to show that terrorists don't represent islam. they chanted "we are americans." and held a banner saying, not in the name of islam. now michigan is home to a large muslim community. and as we report, many of them think it was about time to say something like this. >> reporter: inside a tiny mosque in detroit, this imam leads fellow muslims in prayer. a break from what he describes
