what they are doing to kids who skip. first, more on the massachusetts elections in a moment. i want to tell you about something happening now. there's a massive search for a man accused of shooting and killing eight people in virginia. people are searching the woods for christopher spite. they found seven people dead at the home and an eighth died on the way to the hospital. >> we have determined this individual is armed with a high-powered rifle. he's considered very armed and dangerous. anyone with information contact the virginia state police or the sheriff's office. >> police say the suspect shot a police helicopter, forcing it to land. a huge political upset in massachusetts. it's a game-changer for the entire country. republican scott brown defeated martha coakley for ted kennedy's

old seat. one member said it's a sign voters are not happy with democrats. brown said it's a sign of things to come. >> if anyone doubt that is in the next election season that's about to begin, look at what happened in massachusetts. because, what happened here, what happened here in massachusetts can happen all over america. >> there will be plenty of wednesday morning quarterbacking about what went right and what went wrong. everyone, including me, i am brutally honest. we will be honest about the assessment of the race. >> this is a big blow for democrats. brown supporters knew it. at the victory they chanted 41 meaning republicans will now have 41 senate seats, the magic number to block any bill.

health care reform could be in trouble. brown said he would vote against it. some doctors in haiti are using vodka for serlization. they are hoping things change. the u.s. military is moving more than 100 flights a day through haiti. a naval ship is expected today. a lot of supplies cannot get through the border because of back ups. thankfully rescuers are still finding people alive. an elderly woman spent a week trapped under the debris of a cathedral. anderson cooper was there. >> our brothers from can keown helped us. our brothers from south africa. we were able to take this woman who prayed and prayed. i believe her faith is so big, that was the thing that saved

good morning, breaking news this morning. a 6.1 magnitude aftershot hit haiti this morning. it's slightly weaker than last week's quake, it was 7.0. still, 6.1. the epicenter of this aftershock was just about 30 miles away from port-au-prince, which bore the brunt of so much of last week's earthquake. there's a massive search this morning for a shooting suspect. police believe a 39-year-old shot and killed eight people yesterday. they say all public schools in the county are closed today

because of the ongoing search. the couple accused of crashing the white house state dinner is called to testify today. they will look at how they passed the secret service check point. they said they plan to invoke their fifth amendment rights not to speak. mandatory evacuations going out for 600 homes in california. another storm hits there today. people could be out of their homes for five days. some areas have been seeing five inches of rain this week and could get eight inches more on top of that, today. those are some of the headlines. it's a very busy morning. you are busy as well. morning sunshine. i'm robin meade. let's go back to another story that developed overnight. the boston globe headline reads big win for browns. it's a big win for republicans. scott brown won the special election for ted kennedy's old

17-month-old. the couple adopting him got to see him in a hospital in pittsburgh last night. >> i don't think i was able to say anything. >> i don't think i said anything. i kissed him and hugged him and checked him out and made sure, for myself that he was okay. >> yeah. >> here is the startling number. the u.n. says there were 380,000 orphans in haiti before the quake. take a look at this. this is what happens when a six foot water main breaks. a lot of people lost their water entirely in oklahoma city. most may have their water back now. a nearby community college had to cancel night clatszs. >> one of the breaking stories, we just learned about an aftershock in haiti, near port-au-prince, a 6.1 aftershock, darn near the 7.0 magnitude of last week's quake.

bonnie is joining us with an interesting picture of the aftershocks. >> the reason this is highlighted in red is because it occurred in the past 24 hours. it occurred less than an hour ago. the other yellow dots indicate aftershocks of lesser magnitude. still, days after the quake in port-au-prince, not too far away, 35 miles to the south and west, we have another major aftershock, 6.0. it's a strong quake. i checked, this quake was a shallow one of only six miles deep. that's not a good thing. when you have shallow quakes, there's not enough absorbings in the land. we'll have more on that as well. a lot happening down in haiti,

of course, with a brand-new aftershock of 6.0 magnitude. we are watching extreme weather in california. you have to check out the waves in the golden gate bridge area. this is from an i-report. incredible. i was checking the wind gusts around the area. reports at one point yesterday, of a 90-mile-per-hour wind gust. incredible rough surf in san francisco. more rain is head iing from sacramento down. we had a small thunderstorm with three sightings of tornadoes. the vehicles were thrown up and about. no confirmations of whether it was a tornado. it was strong and damaging winds. more rain expected. the risk for mud slides in the burn areas and elsewhere around

they will give money back, but the markets are doing so much better that you could have a deal of this size in the insurance industry. it's a sign of confidence. if the markets get better, the hope is the job market follows that. it's a big fight over your waistline. weight watchers is pointing fingers at jenny craig after they pointed fingers. basically, there was a jenny craig ad comparing the two plans saying jenny craig is better -- >> or our people lost more. >> the claims, weight watchers is saying the claims are not correct. they are going to the judge saying they should stop the ad campaign. jenny craig is confident with the ad. you would think if they put out a bad claim, consumers watch and say that's not right. often, it's another company industry saying it. they have the resources and lawyers to go to court.

country just got recalled. why the government thinks they are not safe and what you should do if you do have one of these cribs. you know, i hate to keep that information from you here. i will get that right away for you about the baby crib recall. first i need to tell you about breaking news out of haiti, 6.1 aftershock shook buildings. it hit about an hour ago. it was centered about 35 miles from port-au-prince where people are already dealing with last week's devastating earthquake. as you know, that was a 7.0. here you have an aftershock that is a 6.1. let's show you the map again. and bonnie is going to explain how often it looks like we're seeing the aftershocks. is that recently? >> the red dot you see is the most recent quake. that's the 6.1 that occurred about 35 miles from port-au-prince. all of the yellow dots you see are afteris shocks that occurred within the past 24 to 48 hours.

week add more yellow dots if we went back to the original 7.0 eight days ago. couple things to note. this aftershock is the strongest one so far, and it is close -- not too far from the original quake. there's no tsunami warning issued yet. another thing i want to point out is that it's not uncommon to see strong aftershocks when you have such a major quake, even a week later. one-third of aftershocks do occur within a week later. most occur within the next 24 hours. this was such a strong one, that's why we're seeing so many aftershocks. >> that's the breaking news this morning. i cannot imagine how much fear that put into people's hearts. rescuers are still finding people alive in the collapsed buildings in haiti. an elderly woman spent a week trapped under the debris of a

weather yesterday. mud and water continue to flow. if you live in an area that's near a mountain range prone to flooding, this is going to be the time to really take precautions and be ready for the worst, because heavy rain is expected there. on the other coast, this morning things are looking pretty good for much of new york city. we've got 30 degrees. up into northern maine, watch out for more snow. it's still snowing north of portland. freezing rain and ice through the central plains and the midwest. this means chicago, while the weather is okay right now, later tonight, that freezing rain will come in, so thursday morning, you'll have an icy commute to work. also watch out for icy weather across iowa. we're looking at freezing rain for des moines and down south in memphis, tennessee. all of that is heading to the east into nashville. >> thank you.

today new rules will be announced to make it harder for you to get a government backed mortgage. jennifer is here? >> this is kind of all part of the huge changes that we're seeing in the wake of the collapse in the housing market. the federal housing agency, they got to stay afloat, so it means you, if you buy a home, you may have to pay more in premiums. if you don't have a big down payment, you need a pretty good credit score. when the housing market collapsed, banks pulled back. they didn't want to be lending to people that might not be able to pay for it. this agency stepped up and took on more mortgages to keep the housing market afloat. a lot of those mortgages have gone sour and they can't really take that kind of risk anymore. you've got to watch your credit score. banks got stricter now programs are getting striktder. if you care about your internet privacy, maybe instead

of googling it, you should try binging it. all right. bonnie. if you're traveling this morning, what's going on? >> so far so good. we don't have any delays so far, but it's early. we have a lot of nasty weather across the country. take a look at flight explorer. we're focused on the northeast. we are going to have troubles in northern maine. in chicago, we have 1500 planes in the united states across the country. let's take a look at the delays. if you are heading to new orleans, watch out for thunderstorms they can slow you down for about an hour. west coast, travel troubles. weather troubles, two hours, maybe more, because we are looking at rain and wind in l.a., san diego and san francisco. the wind was fierce yesterday in san francisco. finally, it's not over unless we talk about ice.

in omaha, nebraska, we're looking for ice. the delays could be lengthy. albuquerque, phoenix, you're going to see snow today, not in phoenix, but in the mountains. clouds in atlanta, 45 minutes, and memphis, 45 minutes. we're going to talk more about areas in the west dealing with weather, plus this, lawmakers want the suspended white house crashers to explain how they got there. you'll hear how the suspecting are going to dodge the questions. plus john denver may not be who comes to mind when you want to rock out, but one guy got into trouble with the cops when the colorado crooner got himself in trouble.

a college basketball coach will lead his team barefoot in an effort to help people in haiti. here's rafer with another story about the sports world coming to the aid of haiti? >> an original idea on this man's part. i applaud what he's doing. the earthquake in haiti has permanently affected scott nagy. he adopted a 6-year-old daughter from a haitian orphanage. this weekend e8 coach barefoot to help collect shoes and money for the charity samaritan's feet. it's been hard to explain this to his daughter. he's encouraging tan fans to text the word shoes to 85944. also, haitian soccer was basically decimated by the earthquake. nearly everyone from the haitian soccer federation was meeting in

a building at the time of the quake which collapsed killing 30 officials, coaches and referees. the caribbean football league says 20 others are missing. it is believed none of the national players were in the bidding. rookie tyreke evans is being sued over a murder his cousin committed. his 16-year-old cousin killed a man in a drive by shooting. jamar he havens bleed guilty to murder. the victim's family say tyreke evans should be held accountable. figure skating fans get ready for a new reality show, be good johnny weir. it follows the life of an american figure skater. >> i feel like i'm watching "blieds of gloerry." that's a look at sports. >> if the show is good as the show open. when a late my tv feud ends

there is breaking news from haiti this morning. a 6.1 aftershock rocked buildings and it sent frightened people into the streets again this morning, as if they weren't already there. the aeshlg was centered about 35 miles from port-au-prince where people were already dealing with the horrible effects of last week's quake. the blue state of massachusetts has elected its first republican senator in 38 years. this is new this morning. scott brown upset martha coakley in last night's special election. he will elfill the seat that was ted kennedy's. more on what it means for the entire country coming up. mandatory evacuation orders

are going out this morning for about 600 homes in southern california. another storm hit there is today. people are being told they could be out of their homes for five days. some areas have seen 5 inches of rain this week. it could get 8 inches more today. those are awe few of the headlines. it is very busy this morning. i know you're busy all the time as you get ready for work. i'm robin meade. the aftershock in haiti this morning, the 6.1 after shock adds to the problems already in haiti. the searchers in port-au-prince say there are no more signs of life where a market collapsed. teams ended their search there. the united nations is sending 2,000 soldiers to haiti. it is also sending 1500 police officers and more than 50 children from haiti are now in pennsylvania with their new adoptive parents. the kids were rescued from an orphanage. the boston globe headlines reads big win for brown.

it's a huge win for republicans. scott brown won yesterday's special election for ted kennedy's old senate seat. it means democrats will no longer have a filibuster proof majority in the senate. one democrat says this isn't about failing to get out the party's message. it is about the message itself. >> have large numbers of citizens in the united states of america who believe this is going in the wrong direction. there's a limit to what you can keep saying that okay, they just don't get it. if we just pass a bill, they'll get it. i don't know. i mean, i think that we should maybe internalize that we're not doing things entirely correctly. >> now, president obama called brown to congratulate him. the president has now been in office in the white house exactly one year. a new cnn poll shows that 51% of americans approve of the job he's doing. just after he was inaugurated, his approval rating was 76%. take a look at what happens here when a six foot water main

breaks. a lot of people lost their water entirely or had low water pressure at best in oklahoma city. most of them now have their water back maybe. a nearby community college had to cancel classes. the couple accused of crashing the white house state dinner has been called to testify on capitol hill. a house committee is going to look at tarek and makele salahi passed the check point. they plan to invoke their fifth amendment right. let's go back to our story about the strong aftershock in haiti. bonnie has a map to show you the frequency of the aftershocks? >> this was the strongest one so far since the original 7.0 eight days ago. if you're wondering why we're getting so many aftershocks, it's not that uncommon. this was a major quake that occurred in port-au-prince. the one you see here highlighted by the red dot, that occurred in

the past couple of hours. this one is classified as a strong quake. there is a difference in intensity. the yellow dots you see here, these are all the other aftershocks that have occurred win the past 24 to 48 hours. still very seismically active in this region. it's just the last thing people want to deal with, to feel the earth tremer once again. another big story we are tracking in the extreme weather center here. we are watching out for a lot of rain. more of it, rain and wind sweeping across california. this is the next bout of a powerful storm that is multi facetted, bringing wind, rain and possibly corn addic activity. we had people sighting possible tornados this santa barbara. we have snow into northern maine. temperatures in new york are comfortable, just below freezing. watch out for freezing rain and ice for chicago tonight.

for today, omaha, nebraska, des moines, you will be seeing the icy mix working through the forecast. you can see it working its way up into southern sections of south dakota at this hour. it's too warm for ice down in tennessee, but heavy rain just coming into nashville at this hour. if you're heading out for your ride to work, take it slow, because we have a lot of wet weather. finally dense fog, this has been problematic so far this season, a lot of accidentses due to dense fog. this morning we're watching florida. from north to south, we have a dense fog alert, not just florida but southern texas and kansas city, where you have had a little bit of stormy activity as well. tough commute in kansas city with the rain and fog. freezing rain to the north. >> thank you very much. a 16-year-old student with a unique style was among the judge's favorites on "american

this just in this morning. a man wanted in the shooting deaths of eight people in virginia has turned himself in.

this word is coming from the virginia state police a few minutes ago. about 39-year-old suspect christopher spite. >> at this point, we're just saying he turned himself in without incident to law enforcement there on the perimeter. again, we just got this information. we brought it out so we could let the residents of appomattox county know that the gunman is in custody. we'll move forward in the next stage of this investigation. there was a massive search overnight in the woods of rural virginia. police believe spite shot and killed eight people yesterday. most were found around one home. i think they even had some of the schools cancelled there because of the man hunt. this is welcome word that they apparently -- that person has turned himself in. a suspected burglar made himself way too much at home when he reportedly broke into one woman's house. police say he took a shower. gave himself a haircut, even made fried chicken.

when the woman got home on sunday, she found him sitting there in the tv room. >> when i first walked in the house, i could smell that something was being cooked, but i couldn't put the ham and chicken together. he moved. i said don't you move, because if you do, you're going to get my umbrella right across your head. >> it apparently worked because he stayed there until the officers arrested him. i picture him pulling an al bundy, sitting there watching tv. one of the companies that got a big taxpayer bailout may be getting ready to pay a chunk of that money back. jennifer westhoven with more on that? >> a lot of concern that maybe all the money given to aig was going to go right down the toilet, but all of us may get a little bit back. out of the $180 billion lenlt to aig, aig reportedly close to

selling a big subsidiary to met life for about $14 billion. if that goes through, aig says it will use some of the money to pay back taxpayers. now, aside from the pay back which is good, there's another really big picture sign about this. a year ago, our markets were in such a state of chaos that aig really couldn't have done this kind of a deal in the insurance industry, so it is a sign how much markets have stabilized. the dow closing up 10,725. we're moving on up out of the hole, shall we say. it's a battle over your waist line. weight watchers and jenny craig are duking it out. weight watchers is saying jenny craig has put outfalls advertising. >> i'm skinnier, no you are. >> there is a jenny craig ad that compares the two weight loss programs and it says, in the jenny craig ad that jenny craig is better. well weight watchers says that

killed a 13-year-old who they say was heavily armed. they spotted the boy early yesterday morning and asked what was in his backpack. they saw two guns and 250 rounds of ammo. the boy pulled out another gun and opened fire. >> after the fact, when you have the opportunity to sit down and think about things and you know that it's a child, because a 13-year-old is a child, and it's like one of them said, they said why? why did he do it? >> one of the deputies was shot in the leg. he's recovering at home. >> hello world. that was the message bill gates sent out in his first tweet. gates says he plans to use twitter to share cool things about his charities. some people claimed to be gates but twitter verified this is him. one tennis star lost their cool at the australian open. it was not serena williams.

how do your clients become a part of opportunity builders? >> they are funded for the developmental disability administration. if someone is interested, if a family is interested in having family members participate in an opportunity with opportunity builders, they would call and then we would direct them to our director of employment that would start them through the process of the program. >> once they're in the program, do you also provide training before the clients either work in the warehouse or go out to work with your partner businesses? >> absolutely. in the warehouse, we do have an instructor to assist individuals with each contract, and as far as the individuals who go out into the community and work, we do training for those individuals. they have a one on one coach so we'll make sure the individual knows how to do the job before we have them working on their own. >> in going back to mardi gras,

some time with us here. we get through the news pretty fast. we call it news in the fast lane. i'm robin meade, here's what's going on today. break news this morning. haiti has hadst strongest aftershock since a massive quake eight days ago upon. once again, haiti's capital took the brunt of the rattling. we'll talk about the strength there. plus -- >> what happened here in massachusetts can happen all over america. >> a republican will replace the late ted kennedy in the senate. it is an upset that could have far reaching political effects way beyond massachusetts. more on those stories in a moment here, but let's start with another breaking story here. a massive search for a shooting suspect is over. just last hour virginia state

police said that christopher speight had turned himself in. >> at this point we're just saying that he turned himself in without incident to law enforcement there on the perimeter. again, we just got this information. we brought it out so we could let the residents of appomattox county know that the gunman is in custody and of course, we'll move forward to the next stage of this ongoing investigation. >> police believe speight shot and killed eight people. they found seven people dead at a home there yesterday and an eighth died on the way to the hospital. another breaking story today and it comes from haiti where a 6.1 aftershock hit this morning and it was centered only about 35 miles from port-au-prince. it sent some of the survivors of last week's devastating earthquake running into the streets and screaming. this brand new video was taken after this morning's aftershock. it is an extremely dangerous situation because the buildings there, even if they're still

standing would be unstable and then you have all of the collapsed buildings and people searching through those buildings and then you have another quake. how frightening is that? the usgs is saying that this is the strongest afterquake -- aftershock at 6.1 since last tuesday's major quake. meteorologist bonnie schneider is here to explain more about the aftershocks. you have a really interesting map and the red dot indicates today's. >> that's right. just in the past couple of hours, very strong aftershock. this is not the map. let's put up google earth behind me and i'll show you where the aftershock occurred. we've seen the aftershocks not only in the recent past couple of hours. there it is, but the yellow dots you see in and around port-au-prince especially to the west indicate aftershocks that have occurred within the past 24 to 48 hours of lesser intensity. we've seen a lot of aftershocks hit the region, this is the most powerful one and this one is

classified on the magnitude scale as a strong aftershock or quake whereas the major one that occurred, a 7.0, that's much stronger. so it's all relative speaking although 6.1 does seem strong indeed, we are likely to see more aftershocks especially when you look at the intensity of these quakes as we go through the next few weeks. most typically, we see aftershocks, robin. 60% of them occur within 24 hours of the original quake, but don't rule out more. >> this seems really interesting that it would come eight days later so strong as to be 6.1. rescuers have called off their search of a port-au-prince market where five people were pulled out over the weekend alive. a shorter is money was held at the site to honor teams from the united states and turkey. they say that their cameras and listening devices have found no more signs of life, but those with missing relatives refuse to give up hope. >> that's what's killing us.

we can't do anything. it is discouraging. it is discouraging, but we have to keep the hope high. >> about 100 people are believed to be dead in the rubble of that market. a huge political upset in massachusetts and it is a game changer for the entire country. republican scott brown defeated democrat martha coakley in yesterday's special election for ted kennedy's old senate seat. in his victory they chanted 41, meaning republicans will now have 41 senate seats, the magic number to block any bill including the health care reform bill. >> this bill is not being debated openly and fairly, it will raise taxes, it will raise taxes, it will hurt medicare, it will destroy jobs and run our nation deeper into debt. >> we'll always remember our

terrific senator ted kennedy and his words. the work begins anew, the hope rises again and the dream lives on. >> a member of coakley's camp means that brown's win means the voters are not happy with democrats. coming up what it means to president obama and his priority sgloos this just in. two major recalls this morning of things that are dangerous to your children, your baby, to be more specific. hundreds of thousands of dorell asia cribs and more than 1 million baby strollers. jennifer westhoven f you have either you're supposed to stop using it immediately, yes? >> we were talking about cribs and then came the stroller news. first the 635,000 cribs sold at stores like kmart, sears, walmart. safety officials say the drop side can detach and trap a child. there's been a lot of growing concern about drop-side cribs and more than 2 million were recalled in the fall and it is not just drop sides we're talking about.

good morning. it's 21 minutes to the hour. one of the companies that got a big taxpayer bailout may be getting ready to pay a big chunk of that money back. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. well, bring it o right? >> yeah. all of us may get a little bit of money back at least through the federal government out of the $180 billion that we all collectively lent out and this is all to insurance company aig which has practically become a dirty word in this country, right? aig. the close to selling a big subsidiary to metlife for $14 billion. if it goes through aig says it will use some of the money -- pardon me, to pay back taxpayers. what's also good about this, not just that we're getting money back and pay, and just consider the big picture. a year ago this kind of a deal could not have ever been done by aig. so it really is a sign that

markets have stabilized and that's brought a certain level of confidence back so that they can do these kinds of deals. they can sell off a big subsidiary and get that kind of money. there's the dow last night, 10,725. so it is slowly getting up and out of the hole. it is battle over your waistline and what you're willing to spend to shrink your waste line. weight watchers and jenny craig, oh, they are pointing fingers at each other. basically there's a jenny craig ad that says here's the two weight loss plans. >> our people are skinnier. that's basically what they're saying. surprise! we're doing better and weight watchers says that is not true. they're taking it to court. they say that's factually incorrect and they want the judge to stop the campaign. jenny craig says it is confident in its claims and we'll see how it plays out in court. i've seen the ads. interesting. two surgeons who are twin brothers are being called heroes for their work after the earthquake in haiti, while many

nation's biggest banks are also coming into play. bank of america lost more than 5 billion bucks last quarter. b of a took a hit because of the government repayment and big losses in its mortgage and credit card businesses and we do have signs of improvement in wells fargo and both reported quarterly profits and wells fargo says it's growing more confident that the worst is now over. amen to that. finally, warren buffett is about to make shares of his berkshire hathaway affordable. he will be in a meeting today to vote on a 50-1 split of berkshire's class b shares will will bring the price from $3,300 a share to about 67 bucks. hey, we can do that. the class a shares will remain the nation's most expensive stock at over $100,000 a share. so class a, untouchable for most of us.
