good morning. where did your weekend go? i'm robin meade. morning, sunshine. here's what's going on. well, brace yourself for more travel headaches if you're going somewhere this morning. the south and the midwest are in for another wallop and more travel hassles. parents of a college student missing since haiti's earthquake face their worst fears. her body is found and now they face the next wrenching step. look at this. a monster wave goes rogue, and some surfing fans pay a painful price.

incredible piece of tape. first, we're getting video of a deadly commuter train crash that happened in belgium. the national news agency there reports that 20 people were killed when two trains collided during the morning rush. the injured are being treated at a sports arena nearby. family members have already started gathering to find out what happened. we don't know yet what might have caused that crash. we'll keep on that this morning. our top story, though, is the endless winter that seems to hit the south and midwest again today. and yep, that means plenty of new travel for the travelers. hundreds of flights have been canceled into and out of atlanta, a live shot there. and in d.c., a snow emergency goes into effect this morning. after getting three feet of snow in two big storms last week, they are expecting more today. check out augusta, georgia. this is from friday's snowstorm. i-reporter ron brown says that they have gotten snow like this not in years. he took these great pictures. and oh, no, bad road conditions

are blamed for this huge pileup i'm going to show you here on i-70 near kansas city yesterday. look at that pileup. >> it happened too fast. i mean, it was just there. and i headed for the guardrail. and it didn't move. and then i just kept getting nailed from behind. >> well, 15 people were hospitalized. look at how many cars. nobody suffered any life-threatening injuries, thank goodness. the highway reopened last night. how about this? every state in the country except hawaii has some snow on the ground right now. bonnie schneider is in for bob and she has more on what is ailing the south, the midwest and the mid-atlantic. hi, bonnie. >> it seems like a broken record. february, snow. and another day of it. winter storm warnings are in effect for places like louisville, kentucky, measurable snow there right now. all of this will advance to the east. there is good news with this system. we're not looking at a major blizzard once again for the

mid-atlantic. accumulations will be much lighter for washington and baltimore because rain will mix in with this system. so i'm really only expecting an inch or two for the d.c. area. however, you see this area highlighted here in red? and that includes a good portion of kentucky and parts of tennessee? that's where we could see up to five inches of snow, plus very strong, blustery winds coming down from the north. and that is sweeping in some very unpleasant conditions. robin, today the windchills even here in atlanta will drop down into the 20s. it's going to be brutally cold out there. i'll have more coming up. >> thank you very much. a massachusetts couple got heartbreaking news on valentine's day. their daughter's body was found in haiti. 19-year-old britney gengel went to haiti on a service trip with lynn university. her parents told affiliate wcvb that their goal is to bring their daughter's remains home. >> our worst feel was that she was going to be in haiti forever, and we didn't want that. and so as horrific as it is, that we finally received the

phone call, we're glad that we did. we're just going to be glad to have her back home. >> well, britney gengel was on a service trip called journey of hope. eight people from the school were evacuated safely. lynn university says three other students and faculty members were killed when their hotel collapsed in haiti's capital. what is with the dueling vice presidents? veep joe biden and his predecessor, dick cheney, had a war of words on the sunday talk shows. they were asked about biden's remark that another large-scale terror attack on the united states by al qaeda is unlikely. cheney said that he's dead wrong although he agrees that it is a high priority for the terrorist group. >> there's a very high threat that al qaeda is trying very hard to acquire a weapon of mass destruction. and if they're successful in acquiring it, that they will use it. i think he's right. i think, in fact, the situation with respect to al qaeda to say that, you know, that was a big attack we had on 9/11, but it's not likely again, i just think

that's dead wrong. >> i always underestimate the way dick cheney approaches things. the reason it's unlikely is because we have been relentless, absolutely relentless, in isolating al qaeda, central al qaeda, osama bin laden, al qaeda coming out of the afghan, pakistan region. >> but they also disagreed on how the obama administration is treating accused 9/11 mastermind khalid shaikh mohammed. in the next half hour, you'll hear fiery comments about why biden thinks cheney is trying to rewrite history. here are new details this morning about a luger who died in a practice run at the olympics. apparently he told his dad just a few days before that he was afraid of that track. here's rafer with the latest. >> robin, it gives you chills to hear this, but yes, the father of nodar kumaritashvili told "the wall street journal" his son called him just days prior and said he was scared of one of

the turns, specifically the turn that claimed his life right here. now, there were other complaints about the track's speed which was the fastest in the world. well, officials are saying that the 21-year-old from the republic of georgia died because of his human error but then put up a safety wall right here in front of these steel beams at the turn. they shortened the track and slowed it down. they also didn't postpone any events. a few people had a bit of a problem with that. meanwhile, the president of his country blamed the track's designer saying that no mistake should result in a fatality. robin? >> such a horrifying story. and to think about the next person who went down the luge, what do you call it, just the luge track -- >> right. >> -- right after that, the first person to have to do that. thank you for the update on it. ♪ is that not scary? it's gunfire that you're hearing during a church service.

about 100 people scrambled for cover. police in richmond, california, say that three hooded gunmen opened fire on the worshippers. two teenagers were shot. and it's not clear if the 14 and 19-year-olds were the targets. >> this is in the middle of church service, 12:30 in the afternoon, very brazen attack. >> you can't be safe at church, where can you be safe at? >> this is a church. you know, to me, it's like they committed a cardinal sin. >> wow! police say that the two victims are expected to recover. richmond, by the way, is just north of berkeley, california. you know, we mentioned atlanta a lot when it comes to some of the winter storms only because it is one of the largest airports in the world. so if you're traveling this morning, problems there, usually mean problems no matter where you're flying from because so many flights connect there. let's find out why we're having some more endless winter problems. bonnie schneider's in for bob. >> it does seem endless.

every week, every day, more snow and wind and rain. and atlanta has temperatures in the 40s. so we're getting a little more of a rain event. but to the north we could definitely see more measurable snow. winter storm warning now in effect for much of kentucky, lower sections of indiana and illinois. and right here into south carolina into north carolina and mountains of virginia, we're likely to see more measurable snow. notice atlanta just to the north is under a winter weather advisory. well, this is a really large-scale storm. but it's important to note that it's a fast mover. so it doesn't have time to drop the heavy snow. most of the snow is back off further to the west, particularly that wraparound effect that we're seeing in kansas city, now getting a second batch of snow after snow yesterday. temperatures in snellville, georgia, about 40. but bowling green, kentucky, 22. so we are seeing more substantial snow bands there as well as into louisville working its way into covington. and this means you in ohio, southern ohio, cincinnati and columbus, you will definitely see some snow. we're looking at temperatures that are very cold, robin, but the windchill factor makes it feel so much colder.

it feels like it's only 19 in new york. and we're not expecting that much of a warm-up today. even in the south, it will feel brutally cold. >> thank you very much. >> sure. >> i think. there are reports that toyota may extend warranties after its massive recall. and this is new. what engineers found when they inspected toyota accelerators. new information about the professor accused of killing three colleagues at a faculty meeting. she was apparently a suspect in another case years ago.

bonnie schneider is here. she's in for bob right now to tell you about who is going to have the delays. my husband was supposed to come home friday. and because of flight delays, he didn't get home till sunday at 4:00 a.m. poor guy. >> yeah, and i'm glad he got home because today there will be more delays in atlanta, even. even though we're not seeing rain, we're seeing flights canceled from airtran and delta in anticipation of the inclement weather in atlanta. this is a look at flight explorer. still activity off to the east, but definitely problems as we go through the day. another winter storm will cause delays in atlanta as i mentioned but also in dallas, texas. windy weather could slow you down at least an hour. we're also looking at delays in louisville. it's snowing there right now. kentucky's going to get hammered. several inches anticipated. cincinnati, an hour delay there. that holds true for columbus as well. robin, your home state of ohio facing a lot of snow today. >> at least they have salt

trucks is all i can say. in the south they don't. can you believe the daytona 500 was delayed for hours because of a pothole? what do you do when racers are going, what, hundreds of miles an hour and suddenly there gops a pothole in the middle of the track. good morning, rafer. >> morning, robin. you put up one of those little cone things and you get the guy and wave him and do with the slopes. no. >> not going to work. >> they're talking about the super bowl of nascar on hold for over two hours. when they noticed a pothole in the track, now, they patched the hole once. and the cars went back out. but as they sped over it, it started to crumble. so they patched it again, like really patched it this time. in the end, though, if you kept watching, you saw an amazing finish. jamie mcmurray who only led for two laps the entire race held off dale earnhardt jr. to win his first ever daytona 500. a big moment for him and afterwards broke down in tears and ran and fell to his knees.

nice, moving picture. that is touching. the nba all-star game made history, played in front of a record crowd 108,000 people. that's what i said. 108,000 people packed dallas cowboys stadium. it's a football stadium. and it was actually a really good game. usually this game is not very good. the east beat the west by only two points. lebron james put on a show, but dwyane wade was the star. he was the mvp. >> he was last year, too, wasn't he? like the star? >> he's always the star. but yeah, dwyane wade was the mvp. james is always a star. history was made at the vancouver games. the u.s. did. johnny spillane became the first american ever to medal in the nordic combined which is ski jumping followed by a brutal race over a cross-country track. there it is. spillane took silver, finishing just 0.4 of a second behind jason lamy chappuis.

rush in belgium. the national news agency says that 20 people were killed. it is not clear how many were injured. former president bill clinton may return to work today. that's according to his doctor. clinton had a heart procedure thursday for a clogged artery. the former president says that he plans to keep working as the u.n. special envoy for haiti. secretary of state, hillary clinton, says that her husband is in great shape. enough people loved the new movie "valentine's day" apparently to make it the top draw at the box office over the weekend. it made more than 52 million bucks and is a record for a presidents' day weekend. percy jackson and the olympians "the lightning thief" was second at $31 million. and "wolfman" third with $30 million. good morning as you drink down the coffee this morning. i'm robin meade. it's 31 minutes past the hour. more news. the ten americans jailed in haiti on child kidnapping charges could be released today. haiti's deputy attorney general says it has decided whether to

recommend bail for the americans and that it will give its decision to a judge today. the judge's decision will be final. the americans are accused of trying to take dozens of children out of haiti without proper documentation. meanwhile, a dominican man who is acting as a legal adviser to the ten americans faces shocking charges. according to an international arrest warrant issued saturday, he is accused of running a sex trafficking ring that lured women and girls from the caribbean and central america into prostitution with offers of modeling jobs. he denies the charges. the professor accused of killing three colleagues at the university of alabama was a suspect in an attempted mail bombing back in 1993. amy bishop anderson was arrested on friday. >> do you have anything to say? do you know about what happened? >> it didn't happen. there's no way. >> what about the people who died? >> well, "the boston globe" says

police are visiting the mail bombing case where anderson purportedly had a dispute with a harvard colleague. she was also arrested and cleared in the shooting death of her brother in 1986. a psychologist tells "hln" why the alabama shooting is an unusual case. >> women tend not to be aggressive. they tend to be passive-aggressive. when we're angry, we'll steal someone's paperwork that they need behind their backs. they don't have it, we'll talk to our friends and bad-mouth them. we don't typically go on and become aggressive. >> well, witnesses say that anderson opened fire at a faculty meeting friday after learning that she had not made tenure. three people were killed. three were wounded. if convicted, she could face the death penalty. actor/director kevin smith says that he was kicked off a southwest flight because he didn't fit in the seat, and he's angry about it. smith has been giving details all about it on twitter. he normally buys two tickets for extra space. but there was only one seat left

on the flight. so he says that southwest has messed with, quote, the wrong sedentary processed foods eater. now, southwest says it has a rule that each person must fit safely and comfortably in the seat or else that person must buy an extra seat. but on his twitter page, southwest did apologize, and it gave smith a flight voucher. vice president joe biden says dick cheney is trying to rewrite history. the former veep has criticized the plan to try terror suspects in civilian courts especially the man accused in the failed christmas day airline bombing. but joe biden says that the bush administration did the exact same thing with hundreds of accused terrorists. >> the thing i learned from watching that process unfold, though, was that the administration really wasn't equipped to deal with the aftermath of an attempted attack against the united states in the sense that they didn't know what to do with the guy. >> he's entitled to his own opinions. he's not entitled to rewrite history. he's not entitled to his own

facts. the christmas day bomber was treated the exact way that he suggested that the shoe bomber was treated. absolutely the same way. >> well, cheney said that the military commission system wasn't in place yet when the shoe bomber was tried. storm. we're looking at this winter storm warning persisting through today. just bundle up if you're headed to cincinnati. if you're traveling there or if you're already there, good morning and i hope you can stay warm today. it's going to be brutally cold. we're looking at a lot of rain coming through mixing with snow at times in tennessee. some of the heavier snow bands continue to persist over kentucky. notice the temperature there of 24 degrees in bowling green. snellville just north of atlanta still in the 40s. the cold air comes in behind it so don't rule out snow showers in atlanta as well. here's where we're seeing heavy snow. covington into indianapolis and also evansville in lower indiana. current temperatures across the northeast and midwest are cold. it's going to feel even colder. there's a brutal arctic blast coming in behind the system. so the windchill factor for chicago is only five degrees. in cincinnati we showed you pictures. feels like it's 20 there. and even down south, the windchill factor will number the teens and 20s. >> okay. so not a very easy monday for sure. thank you very much. appreciate it. buy a fridge, get money

she was supposed to race on sunday for the first time but bad weather pushed it to wednesday, giving her more time to recover. she was the favorite to win gold in two events before the accident. and then she put some cheese on it and the swelling went down. more details on the crash that killed a luger from the republic of georgia. bold move. >> he never perfected the jump and then tried it at the olympics? >> yeah. never perfected it and said he was going to give it a try. he lives on a horse and hay farm in washington. he built a ramp in his driveway. but you know what? he's young, only 23, going to be back. u.s. speed skater and dancing with the stars champion ohno became the most decorated man in u.s. history. two south koreans got tangled and crashed just before the finish line. this guy deserves a lot of credit. he could be on "entourage" in my opinion, but, instead, compete in the games. he could have been a hollywood star. you have to feel bad for this guy. last night on valentine's day he proposes. melissa, will you be my blue shirt bride, love, nick.

texas will be facing into the teens today. mostly rain, though, for the coastline. i think, again, because of the location of the low, heavier snow for northern new england and let me tell you something the folks for the skiing resorts in vermont, new hampshire, they are excited. they would like to get some of the snow achieved in the mid-atlantic. 22 into philadelphia, but the windchill factor with that brutal arctic blast is making it feel colder and in cleveland at this hour t feels like it's nine degrees and washington feels like it's 23. remember for the d.c. area, we are looking at a rain/snow mix so it's not heavy in terms of accumulation and temperatures are warmer here. chicago is facing a high of 27 today and in dallas i mentioned 39 degrees just to the south in hoousten is even warmer than that and eventually we'll start to get milder across the southeast and by the end of the week, robin. i know we're ready to get warmer. i say that relatively speaking. the average high in atlanta is

ground somewhere today. bonnie schneider is in bob and will tell you about the weather that we are concerned about now. good morning. >> good morning, robin. it is snowing in louisville and it is snowing in cincinnati. and it is snowing in paducah, kentucky. we are looking at snow across the heartland. the advisories for atlanta have now lifted but look at this, north georgia, mountains, as you head to north carolina, still facing a threat of winter weather. we are also looking at this threat working its way to the east later tonight. advisories for the northeast will go into effect this evening. but right now the snow is really hitting parts of indianapolis pretty hard. we could see five inches of snow before this is said and done. even though it is a fast-moving storm, it is important to note that there's antarctic blast coming in directly behind it. so we will see the winds pull down much colder air and that will take the windchill factor down into the single digits in many locations. actually minneapolis, lit feel like it is below zero today. that holds true for omaha and in the south, towards nashville and memphis, lit feel like it is in

the low 20s. really, really cold air across the eastern half of the country. dramatically cold. normal high temperature in atlanta, for example, about 53 degrees. today we will be lucky if we feel it is above 25. i will have more on this winter storm coming up. >> thank you very much. it is widespread. the ten americans jailed in haiti on kidnapping charges could be released today. haiti's deputy attorney general says he's decided whether to recommend bails for the americans and will give his decision to a judge today. the judge's decision will be final. americans are accused of trying to take dozens of children out of haiti without proper documentation. a dominican man who is acting as a legal adviser to the ten americans passes shocking charges. according to an international arrest warrant issued saturday, he is accused of running a sex trafficking ring that lured women and girls from the caribbean and central america into prostitution with offers of modeling jobs and he denies the

charges. we are getting firsthand accounts now from a deadly commuter train crash that happened this morning in belgium. two trains hit head on during the morning rush. one woman tells cnn that the impact woke up her husband and told her that some of the passengers were thrown against the walls. the belgian government says at least ten people were killed and not 20 as originally reported. another 11, though, are hurt. new details this morning about the luger who died in a practice run at the olympics. apparently, get this, he told his dad to days before that he was afraid of that track. here's rafer with the latest that. that's sad to hear. >> it just gives you chills. this was a horrible tragedy but the father of nodar kumaritashvili tells "the wall street journal" that his son called him just days and said he was not only scared of the track but specifically the turn that claimed his life. turn was called thunderbird. get this. there were other complaints about the track's speed. it was the fastest in the world.

officials are saying the 21-year-old from the republic jaffe gentleman died because of his human error and inexperience. but then after he died, they put up a safety wall at the steel beams. they shortened the track. they slowed it down. the president of georgia blasted olympic organizers and luge officials saying that no mistake should result in a fatality. we are showing you a memorial as they went on with the events planned. the question is whose fault is it if anybody? that's being debated on our facebook page now. >> these tracks, i think, have been increasingly fast as well. they started out fast but in success of competitions have gotten faster. 96 miles an hour. >> they were reporting speeds of up to 96 miles an hour. when kumaritashvili died, they say his speed was around 88, 90 miles per hour when he went over the wall. what's with the dueling vice presidents? joe biden and his predecessor dick cheney had a war of words on the sunday talk shows. they were asked about joe biden's remark another

here we goen. more snow. fast mover this time. we are looking at a major blizzard. great news for the mid atlantic. there are folks that want the snow up into the northeast and ski resorts and vermont, new hampshire, massachusetts. they are like, hey, we want the snow. they are going to get witness this storm. right now the snow is hitting hard into indiana and particularly into kentucky where the snow has been very steady. lot of that is sliding on into ohio at this hour. check this out. ashland, kentucky, columbus, ohio, snow starting where you are for the morning commute. and if you are heading to work today i know it is a holiday for many people. you will as if heavier snow in the latter part of the day. here is the storm. our extreme weather showing you that this is a fast-moving clipper system, meaning it will clip the area, dumping light to moderate snow. possible we get six to eight inches in some areas, particularly in the interior sections of the northeast and that includes as far south aspen pen. overall the cold arctic air coming in behind the system will be felt as far south as alabama and into areas, even here in georgia, let's show you a live picture of atlanta this morning.

we were ready for the snow. only didn't get any. a lot of rain. temperatures have been in the 40s but falling. i have to tell new atlanta, it is going to feel like it is in the 20s all day today. so bundle up. overall, wow, is it going to be cold out there? mott just cold down south. cold in the midwest and northeast. check this out. temperatures are only at 16 in chicago, 26 in detroit. that brutally blast of wintry weather is pulling down colder air so the windchill forecast tore in indianapolis right now is 12 degrees. it is really cold and snowing. not everybody is cold. in the southwest we are looking at mild temperatures, l.a., phoenix, 77. no problem. right? but florida's little cooler for this time of year. high in tampa, 55 which sounds great to most folks dealing with the bitter cold. and i can tell thank you pattern is changing. tomorrow the storm will still continue to bring the snow across the great lakes but eventually milder air will work its way across the country and that should get us back to normal, robin. back to normal.

did. we are just going to be glad to have her back home. >> brittney gangel was on a service trip called journey of hope. eight people from the skirl were evacuated safely from haiti. lynn university says that three other students and two faculty members were killed when their hotel collapsed in haiti's capital. three people, including a child, were killed in a helicopter crash near phoenix. and aviation officials are trying to figure out what caused the chopper to go down yesterday. witness witness said he saw the chopper spiralling and a plume of smoke. authorities say it burst into flames when it hit the ground. 12 civilians were killed. it happened in southern afghanistan where 15,000 coalition fighters are attacking the taliban. u.s. general mcchrystal apologized to afghanistan's president. nato announced the offensive ahead of time so that people could get out of harm's way. an afghan spokesperson said 27 taliban fighters had been

killed. kevin smith says he was kicked off of a southwest flight because he didn't fit into the seat and he's angry about it. smith has been given details all about it on twitter. he normally buys two tickets for extra space. there was only one seat left on the particular flight. he says that southwest has messed with, quote, the wrong sedentary processed foods eater. southwest has apologized, though. and it gave smith a voucher, flight voucher. the airline says, though, the crew is responsible for the safety and comfort of all customers and they followed policy when they decided that smith neededing a second seat. take a look at the pictures from the maverick surf contest. elite surfers are invited to the competition off of pillar point, california. the mean waves can reach 40 feet and several rogue waves knocked down some of the fans. look at this. 13 people were injured. some even have broken bones. >> and i felt my ankle snap.

you got to definitely respect the ocean. it is one of those things. >> i-reporter scott anderson took this picture of a monster wave and captured people being swept away. he says as many as 50 people were knocked over. he himself got soaked up to the knees trying to snap the picture. police say that two of the injured people had to be taken to the hospital. the weather situation, i'm going say, is changing right now. as we speak, bonnie schneider's in for bob to map out who is getting wintry weather after all. good morning. >> early this morning, 3:00 a.m., we thought maybe atlanta would get a little bit of snow. but it looks like the cold air didn't catch up with the moisture in time. that doesn't mean we are not going to see measurable and shovelable the snow if that's a word for parts of kentucky and into ohio. we are seeing possibly six inches. we can see higher amounts as well. the wind will be strong. when we have the strong wind it can tend to blow about the snow. here's where it is snowing at this hour. all through the heartland into

indiana and illinois and specifically into kentucky and down in georgia and into alabama, the temperatures have been too warm for real accumulating snow. at least this go-behind and back out to kentucky, certainly cold enough with temperatures in the 20s there. here's our extreme weather tracker. we can show you pressure zips across fast-moving system and eventually will bring measurable snow to the northeast. new york city, you are going to see snow. it will mix with rain. we have a live picture this morning to show you of new york city. and the temperatures are cold. what a beautiful shot of the statue of liberty. looks like the sun is shining, gorgeous weather. and it is all going to change. we are looking for some snow there and mixing with rain at times tonight and tomorrow. since it is president's day many people have the day off and weather is nice to walk around the city today. i would advise strongly to bundle up. check this out. it is cold out there. the current temperature in new york city is 28 degrees. now, the brutally windchill makes it feel much colder. our windchill factor takes us down to 19 there but even colder in cleveland. feeling like it is only 4

degrees. that's not so difficult to believe in february. right? when you start heading further to the south and into places like dallas the windchill factor will be in the 20s and in atlanta, georgia, lit feel likes in the 20s as well. it is kind -- cooler as you can see through florida. we have a high temperature today of 66 in tampa. that's below normal even though it does not seem that cold. eventually some milder air will work its way into the forecast but for tomorrow, this is shgood news for people that love to ski in new england. everyone has been saying up there, hey, where's our snow? we want heavy snow to go skiing in vermont, new hampshire, and up into maine. you are going to get it tomorrow. this storm system has taken a track a little further inland. which means that the heavier bands of snow will stay more in interior new england rather than pound the bigger sites along i-95. so washington, baltimore, you are catching a break with this storm. it will bring snow but mix with rain and too mild to get more heavy snow out of this system. another widespread view of the advisories just to mention back

"the wall street journal" reports nodar kumaritashvili called his father and actually told his dad that he was afraid of the track's speed specifically the curve where he died. now, officials afterwards put up a safety wall in front of those steel beams and slowed the track down. they ruled the crash was the 21-year-old's fault. i say you couldn't put up the safety wall in front of the steel beams before someone died? at least pads? it is a tragedy. another scary crash. fortunately it did not end in tragedy but it did end in heartache. american patrick deneen was trying a jump he never perfected when the poor guy just bit it. he was trying this jump because he said he immediated to make a bold move to get on the podium and, unfortunately, did not work. you know what? he's young and he will be back. he lives on a horse and hay form and built a ramp in his driveway. only 23. we will see him again in four

we'll take you lirve to vancouver and how that impacted all of the games. first, though, our top story this morning. new snow where you already had enough. the midwest is getting it the worse and headed for the mid-atlantic and northeast, again. in the south some flights were canceled into and out of atlanta. the good news in that region they have called off emergency operations in georgia because it is warmer than expected. check out augusta, georgia, though from friday's snow storm. ron brown, one of your fellow viewers said they have not gotten snow there in years and he took these pictures. bad road conditions are blamed for a huge pileup on i-70 near kansas city yesterday. do you see this? >> the visibility was really poor. by the time i saw these cars in front of me, i had half a second to react. it was terrible, i couldn't see anything. i was about to get off the highway, but too late for that. >> 15 people were hospitalized and nobody suffered any life-threatening injuries and that's good.

the highway reopened last night. how about this, every state in the country except hawaii has some snow right now. i said this friday and same thing today. bonnie schneider is in today for bob van dillen with the latest on a new winter system. give me a break, right? >> even florida has snow on the ground from last week's system and now the advisories are posted and extending eastward into new york and new england started to get some advisories because this fast-moving storm is on the move. continue to bring snow to the heartland. places like louisville, snow on the ground and lexington, across kentucky. cincinnati, lower sections of ohio and pennsylvania and accumulating snow and the good news for the northeast, places that want snow like the mountains of vermont, new hampshire you could get it with this system and up to a foot of snow in the higher elevations. by contrast, better conditions for d.c. we do have winter weather advisories posted, but the

says at least 11 other people were hurt in the crash and they're being treated at a nearby sports center. officials say it was snowing at the time of the crash, but not an unusual amount. the ten americans jailed in haiti on child kidnapping charges could be released today. now, haiti's attorney general says he decided whether to recommend bail for the americans and will give his decision to a judge today. the judge's decision will be final. the americans are accused of trying to take dozens of kids out of haiti without the proper documentation. you know what, a dominican man who was acting as a legal adv e adviser to the ten americans faces shocking charges. according to an international arrest warrant issued saturday, he is accused of running a sex trafficking ring that lured women and girls from the caribbean and central america into prostitution with offers of modeling jobs. he denies the charges. what is with the dueling vice presidents? veep joe biden and his predecessor dick cheney had a war of words on the sunday talk

shows. they were asked about biden's remark that a large-scale terror attack against the united states by al qaeda is unlikely. >> i think, in fact, the situation with respect to al qaeda to say that that was a big attack we had on 9/11 but not likely again is dead wrong. i think the biggest strategic threat the united states faces today is the possibility of another 9/11 with a nuclear weapon or a biological agent of some kind and i think alcade saw out there even as we meet trying to figure out how to do that. >> i don't think the former vice president dick cheney listens. the president of the united states said the state of the union we're at war with al qaeda. they are, in fact, not able to do anything remotely like they were in the past. they are on the run. i don't know where dick cheney has been. look, it's one thing, again, to criticize, it's another thing to sort of rewrite history. >> now, cheney does have some common ground with biden.

he says he completely supports the administration's strategy in afghanistan. there are new details this morning about the luger who died in a practice run at the olympics. apparently he told his dad a few days before that he was afraid of that track. rafer with more on that. >> and, robin, given the severity of this tragedy, as you can imagine, a lot of fingerpointing going on right now. the father of nodar kumaritashvili said his son called him just prior to the accident and scared of one of the turns specifically the turn that claimed his life. now, there were other complaints other than his about the track's speed. this was the fastest track in the world, but officials are saying that the 21-year-old from the republic of georgia died because of his human error. but after the tragedy, they put up a safety wall at the turn, shortened the track and slowed it down. the president of georgia blasted olympic organizers and luge officials saying no mistake should result in a fatality. we're showing you video of a

southern georgia. interestingly enough the cold air didn't catch the moisture in time to give us snow in atlanta. we did see a steady rain, that's for sure. temperatures across georgia are cooling down and then across kentucky where the snow is steady is in the 20s. as we take a look at our extreme weather, snow heavier through the interior of new england. this means into upstate new york and the catskill mountains you'll see a foot of snow and new hampshire, maine, western mass, snow, that's what you want. we have seen not enough this winter. but look at this, because of the track of low pressure further inland places like washington and baltimore, mixed rain and snow which will be light which is beneficial after all the snow we've seen. new york city, the temperature 32 degrees and live picture of what it looks like outside manhattan. there's a picture of downtown and you can see we're looking at nice conditions there, just remember it's brutally cold.

pennsylvania. areas you see highlighted in blue, those are advisories areas where i'm expecting two inches or less of snow mixing in with rain, not to say there won't be sleet. here's something brand-new. winter weather advisories posted into new england and even boston has an advisory that begins much later tonight into tuesday. but in the immediate future, watch out for some snow starting tonight into the d.c. area and very light and maybe one to three inches in parts of virginia mixing in with rain. as you go north, so different from the previous storms. we'll actually see heavier amounts. three to five in the philadelphia area and three to six in new york. so we'll see it into fairfield county. here's. big picture rain sweeping up from the south and back side producing some snow and wintry conditions. temperatures are so cold in indianapolis that snow is sticking 22 degrees there and, really, the snow bands are the heaviest through covington and ashland and then straight

through blue field and west virginia and down in danville, virginia, that's just north of north carolina. the temperature is 34 degrees. we will see mixing at times and be careful if you're driving in the piedmont of north carolina, you'll see changing conditions there. this low will work its way to the north and east and taking a totally different track than the previous storms. more snow for interior sections of new england and that includes the catskill mountains of new york all the way up to the mountains of vermont, new hampshire and even into maine. those of you who love to ski, you'll be getting your snow, heavy at times possibly up to a foot and also seeing a blast of arctic air behind this system as if it hasn't been cold enough in the deep south, it will stay cold. the northeast also facing some chilly conditions. we have temperatures that are in the 30s and into the 20s and the windchill factor dropping well down into the teens, even cincinnati the windchill factor is at 29 and indianapolis it feels like it is nine degrees and it feels like it is only 8 degrees in montreal and canada.

of course, he lost his life on friday in turn 16. what was even more tragic is that his son had dreamed of becoming an olympian since childhood. >> robin touched on it, this has caused a little bit of a controversy. they're saying it was his fault, but they made some changes to the track and that's at the center of it. could you talk more about that. >> the international ski federation came out and said it was operator error and not the track, they deemed it safe. but they did make changes. they erected a wall in the area where the skier lost his life and they moved the starting areas and it did reduce the speeds in training and throughout the event. not a lot of the luge competitors were happy with that, rafer. not happy that the luge federation blamed his athlete. >> i know they went on with the luge competition on sunday. can you describe the mood? has it affected the overall mood in vancouver and whistler?
