5:04 pm
loudly for the whales as they performed the routine. but the trainers didn't swim or perform in the water with the whales. on wednesday, an orca named tilikum pulled the 40-year-old brancheau in the water and fatally injured her. thousands of people in the northeast are sitting in the dark right now because of a massive snowstorm. repair crews from new jersey all the way to maine have been working since thursday to fix broken power lines. but toppled trees and up to 30 inches of snow are just getting in the way for them. the power situation got so bad in new hampshire, even a state emergency center was working on a generator. new hampshire's governor says it could be a week before the power is back on for everyone. the storm was brutal even in the areas that didn't get any snow. take a look at this. the wind ripped the roofs right off some buildings in gloucester, massachusetts. the winds read 91 miles an hour in portsmouth, new hampshire. that's well above hurricane level. in maine heavy rain caused

flooding in coastal areas. this is what man saw in gloucester. >> trees went down. i went to open up the door and the whole roof blew off 20 feet up in the air and then you can see the back. it landed almost on a house behind me. a river dam that was threatening to collapse because of this storm will likely hold. that's the word from officials in freetown, massachusetts. the water started spilling over the dam this week and about a dozen people were advised to leave their homes. but last night officials said that the water will probably recede and the dam should be okay. this was a huge relief because safety experts were very concerned yesterday. motivational speaker james arthur ray is out of jail and breaking his silence about the death of three people in a sweat lodge at a retreat that he was leading. ray was released yesterday, a day after a judge reduced his bond. here he is. here's what he had to say. >> i'm really, really grateful

5:09 pm
that tsunami is rolling across the pacific ocean at 500 miles per hour and began reaching hawaii just a short time ago. bonnie schneider is here to tell us what's happening right now and what might be in store for hawaii. bonnie. >> well, na tasha, it's been fascinating to watch because now we hear the arrival is detected on noah buoys. a typical buoy out in the ocean like the ones that are in the pacific ocean. what that does is it detects just the slightest bit of motion in along the sea surface. so we did get a report earlier this afternoon that there was a detected drop of several meters from a tsunami warning buoy about 145 miles from the big island of hawaii.
5:10 pm
that was earlier today. and now we're getting some reports of some of the wave heights at three feet coming in. but it's important to note, as we come back to the maps, just to show you that you can't really rejs terp the intensity of a tsunami based on the first wave. the whole tsunami event can last for 30 minutes or longer. the force of the water coming in from this direction it's important to note it doesn't just mean that the eastern shoreline could be affected. the water could work its way around the island as well. you can see that here. here's the big island. here's hilo. notice the bay area in here. we'll watch for the water depending on the topography and where it comes in at what angle to determine how much water comes inland. but this is not an ordinary wave. it's not a wave that comes in and breaks. this is a wave that continue ousley forces its way onshore and it's a multiple event. we're not going to see one tsunami vaf. we're likely to see a multiple event with the waves coming in. they could come in at different heights as well.
5:11 pm
>> we'll keep watching it closely. thanks so much. you're seeing some of the damage from that powerful earthquake that rocked chile overnight. it shows an i-reporter checking out the damage in his apartment in santiago hours later. look at this. things are just tossed about in what he calls his once tidy kitchen. and he says what used to be a beautiful bathroom is now a beautiful crack. he says that he was at a club when the earthquake suddenly struck. and when he rushed out, he could see broken windows and falling buildings. more i-reporters are sending in pictures of the earthquake damage. these are coming in from a middle schoolteacher living in a high rise in the capital city of santiago. helen says it was the most terrifying quake she has ever experienced. and she's from san francisco. she says that it was overwhelming. and lasted a good 45 seconds just of constant shaking. the i-reporter says that her power, water and internet service have been restored. pogrel says churches and stores in her neighborhood are damaged
5:12 pm
but things are getting back to normal. are your views questioned today has more to do with a more personalized form of medicine. some patients are beginning to turn to genetic testing to help improve the effectiveness of the drugs they're taking called pharmacogenomics. in a recent "usa today" article it says in the future a person may have the genome sequenced for less than a thousand dollars. it's supposed to help doctors better prescribe medication but other scientists warn it might be too premature to place too much stock in the genetic tests. how much should your doctor know about your genetic makeup? you have been telling us what you think. philip writes -- i have very few privacy concerns at all. tina says, yes, it would be nice to not have to trial and error meds. another says it's time to give
5:13 pm
equal time to health treatments other than chemicals and genetic experiments. there are thousands if not millions of people who are living healthy lives without the barbaric medical system of america today that treats you after you have an extreme condition. we want to hear what you think about this. do you want doctors to have your genetic profile if it means that they can keep you healthier or do you want to keep it private because some people might use the information against you? e-mail us, would you, by going to cnn.com/hln. now, if you've ever sent a text message that you later really, really regretted sending, you might want to check out a new mobile phone application. tiger text. yeah, it allows you to delete a text message from the cell phone you sent it to. you can detect a life-span for messages and also when the deadline arrives. the messages disappear from the phone that sent it and the phone that received it. the application designers says the message will not be stored

5:21 pm
state attorney general said that maryland could recognize the marriages but also said that his opinion was meant to guide the courts and is not the law of state. >> much like a driver's license. people are allowed to drive in maryland with a valid virginia or pennsylvania driver's license. they will be treated as being married in the state of maryland with a license from one of the five states that recognizes gay marriage today. >> currently same-sex couples cannot get married in maryland. a bill allowing gay marriage is being debated in a state house committee, but many lawmakers say it's not a good idea. >> if they come here it's going to be pandemonium. there are many, many silent persons against this who are not saying anything right now. everywhere i go, people are telling me they don't want this. we are tracking a tsunami triggered by that horrific earthquake in chile. plus, struggles in the aftermath of haiti's quake. how doctors are improvising in the face of dwindling supplies.

here. look at this. the quake hit in the dead of the night when most people were just sleeping. and dozens of aftershocks have been felt ever since then. many of them with magnitudes of 6.0 or more. geologists say this quake is one of the biggest ever recorded. it triggered a tsunami warning for the entire pacific region. evacuation sirens sounded today in hawaii and people there are getting supplies in together in case disaster strikes. but the first possible waves of the nooum are expected in hawaii later this afternoon. a sizable tsunami rolled across the pacific ocean with an estimated speed of 500 miles per hour as it headed to hawaii. bonnie schneider is here to tell us what's happening now and what might be in store for hawaii. >> we've been monitoring ocean buoys all around the pacific especially the ones closest to hawaii. you're looking at a picture of an ocean buoy. they sit on top and kind of measure any bumps in the rise of
5:47 pm
the surface. and we did get measures about 145 miles from the big island of hawaii. that was earlier today. and now we're getting some reports of some of the wave heights at three feet coming in. you'll see the energy of the water coming in at a force can make a difference. we've also seen some wave heights clocked right now at about three feet. note, though, tsunami waves can come in at varying levels with varying intensity and laps for 5 or 15 minutes. this could be an ongoing event and work its way around the island. not just onshore but all around the island, not one particular shoreline. note the shape south of hilo where we have an inlet and that has a tendency to funnel water. however, looking at pictures on the water, we're not looking at too much activity in terms of very high waves but we're still monitoring the situation because the all clear has not been giving. >> you said 5 to 15 minutes it can last. that's quite a long time for that much water.
5:48 pm
how does this earthquake here in chile that we're talking about compare to the earthquake say in haiti? >> the earthquake in haiti was very different because even though the magnitude of the one here in chile today was 8.8, which is tremendous in magnitude. it occurred in a less populated area three miles from the coastline in southern chile. and the one in haiti by contrast was very close to port-au-prince, a highly populated city. so you had many more people affected. the structures in chile are more sturdy than the ones in haiti as well. there's many reasons we saw differences in the intensity and severity of the quakes. >> thanks so much. if you'd like to help in the relief efforts already under way, just go to cnn.com/impact. you'll find a lipps of organizations that will deliver aid to chile as well as any other countries that might be damaged by tsunamis from the quake. impact twitter pages maintains a list on approved organizations that are responding. search for cnn impact. now, we've got an update on a story here we've been following very closely since
