good morning, i'm natasha in for robin meade this morning. a shocking shooting. we are dealing for more details about the suspect. tiger woods is back home with his wife and kids. does this mean they are patching things up? some say this -- look at this. is it a raccoon. the man suspected of shooting two cops outside the pentagon subway station last night has died. it's what the "associated press"

is reporting. he's linked to the internet postings that showed resentment for the u.s. military. he calmly approached the officers and shot at them before they exchanged fire. >> he did not say a word. according to the officers, i interviewed two of three of them now. he walked up very cool. no distress, no emotion in his face. it's typical for someone to reach for a pass to show it. he reached for his pocket and he came out with a gun. the two officers are being treated in a hospital. as for the hundreds of thousands of people traveling, it will close one of the busiest transit stations. they will be able to pass through the pentagon rail station. they will not be able to pick up or drop off riders. in chile, a 6.3 magnitude

aftershock scared people out of bed. this video shows what it already looked like there. so far, no word of new damage or injuries from the aftershock. toyota is accused of with holding crash data. what's this about? jennifer westhoven has been tracking these developments. >> good morning. thanks for joining us this friday morning. crash data, something like a black box in the plane but it's in the car. it showed if they were hitting the brakes or the gas. maybe clues about what's causing the ruaway cars sudden acceleration. toyota has been secretive and refused to share the data with the victims and survivors. >> meanwhile, dozens more drivers are complaining their

billion from the college and university city. richard lui is looking into the impact of the plan cuts. good morning. >> it is an early morning. good morning to you. they are protesting. california's public universities are a relative bargain when you compare their fees to other state scols. the bargain, it's going down. the average for in-state fees of california's four-year public colleges was almost $6,00. that's up more than 10% from last year if you look at the numbers. e college board found that california state schools are still in the lower price range in the united states. tuition there could top $10,000 by the fall. vermont is the high esz. tuition costs there, just over $12,000 each year. the student protesters are not old enough to drive. we are talking second graders

the man suspected of shooting two cops outside the pentagon subway station last night is dead. authorities think john patrick bedell acted alone and while he don't have a motive for the shooting, bedell is linked to internet postings that showed resentment for the military. the pentagon police chief says he calmly approached the two officers before he shot at them. apparently the suspect is not in the d.c. area. >> it appears he's had some issues in the past. he has had a couple of contacts with the law. he's a very well educated individual. right now we don't know if we have a motive yet. there is no indication at this point that there are any domestic or international terrorism connections to this at l. probably at this time it appears to be a single individual who had issues. >> the two officers who exchanged fire with bedell were grazed in the shooting and are being treated at a hospital. in about a half hour we'll

equipment. also putting people to work on the nation's roads and bridges in infrastructure project projects. critics on both sides, though. a democrat said it should be called a corporate tax bill not a jobs bill and a republican lawmaker reportedly said this is a no jobs bill. a faux jobs bill, a snow jobs bill. the big monthly jobs report comes out at 8:30 easternnd economists believe the country likely lost about 65,000 jobs i the latest month. good news on that bailout. you might think, good news about the bailout? yes. more of that money is coming back to taxpayers. in this case the government's making a little money, too. the treasury sold about $1.5 billion of securities from bank of america. not only is bank of america paid back everything, paid it back in december, but the government also made a little bit. they got these warrant programs from a lot of the different banks to make sure that the government would end up in some cases making a little instead of losing its shirt.

here for you in blue. hard to pick states that you didn't have a protest in. it given the huge scope of students and teachers ouraged is in that picture, protests actually beginning in california last year. that state's public universities and colleges are still a relative bargaining, but that bargain is getting worse each and every year. the average for in-state fees in california four-year public colleges this year, almost $6,000. now, that is up more than 10% from last year. the college board finding that california state schools are still, though, in the lower price range in the united states, but tuition there could top $10,000, natasha, by this fall. >> a change for students. richard, some of these student protesters are not even old enough to drive. talking second graders here. >> second graders. some of those at one school in hollywood hills wrote protest letters to governor arnold

happy friday. good morning. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade today. details are still coming in about a shootout just steps from the pentagon and the more we learn about the suspected gunman the more mysterious it get sdmroos tiger woods is back home from therapy and he might not be alone. guess who's back in his florida home. oh, yeah. get ready to experience terror. we have brand new video of the cruise ship that got slammed by some massive waves and for the first time we're hearing from passengers. it took less than a minute for two cops to take down a gunman inside the pentagon subway station last night.

authorities say the suspect john patrick bedell died hours after that shootout. earlier this morning the pentagon police chief said bedell was wearing a suit when he calmly approached the officers and shot at them. the officers' quick action saved lives. >> all of you know that the act of shooter issues we've had in the country over the last several months have brought a lot of focus on this in every police department, local, state and federal. we're no exception. we serve a very large population. the fort hood incident put us on notice that it can happen in a military isolation, and they work. the two officers that exchanged fire with bedell are grazed in a shooting and are being treated in the had hospital. we'll play audio clips of what is apparently bedell railing against the government stay tuned for that. a scary morning for people in chile. there have been two powerful aftershocks in the last hour.

one with a 6.8, that's huge. both aftershocks could be felt in concepcion. this shows you what it already looked like there. meanwhil the death toll may be lower than first thought. chilean officials can confirm 200 deaths and they now consider those people missing. toyota is accused of withholding crash data that might affect the acceleration problem. jennifer westhoven is tracking these developments. >> frankly, i don't know that much about cars, but i didn't know there was something like this. there are in many cars like a black box for a plane. there's something like that in your car recording a lot of the data and there are people who think this data might show, for instance, specifically in one crash if the driver was hitting the brake or the gasedal and if we could see lots of them maybe we could see patterns and see what's causing the sudden acceleration problem. a press investigation found that toyota has at times been secretive and has frequently

refused to share that data with victims and survivors. you should know toyota does share that data with safety regulators, but meanwhile, doesn't more toyota drivers say their cars, their vehicles sped up after being fixed? the number of people saying that that's happened to them now is up to 60. it just points to is this really resolved yet? toyota has said that it is making it a top priority to quickly investigate any complaints. back to you, but still pretty scary stuff for people who are drivering toyotas. >> oh, definitely. it is interesting what you said about the black box thing. it's amazing the technology in vehicles these days. thanks so much, jen. protests over education budget cuts. we've been hearing about them, but they turned chaotic in some places. take a look at the map there. the states in dark blue are where protests were planned yesterday and look at what happened in the state where this movement started. police in riot gear firing

dozens more toyota drivers say a recall fix from the company just is not working. the government now says more than 60 people have reported continued acceleration problems. toyota says it is confident in the fix and will foow up on each complaint. an ingredient used in more than 50 processed foods including snacks and dressings has prompted a recall. the fda says that salmonella was discovered in the flavor enhancer, but no illnesses have been reported to the cdc. for a complete list of those recalled foods head to cnn.com/robin and look under "important websites." another top official under

new york governor david paterson has resigned. he can't continue working in good conscience. this is the third paterson aide to quit. paterson is under investigation after ethics complaints against him. welcome back. i'm natasha curry in for robin meade. we have breaking news for you. the february unemployment rate held steady at 9.7%. in january, the rate was 9.7% but there are some surprises in the whole report. jennif westhoven is crunching those numbers right now and we'll check in with her in just a few minutes. earlier we told you that the suspect in that pentagon subway shooting may have had some resentment toward the military. now we're hearing tape of what could be john patrick bedell's voice railing against the government. the person on the tape accuses the government of using deception and feels the need to carry on a legacy of justice. >> my desire for freedom is centered on the role of government and society.

college students planning a spring break getaways are being warned to stay away from mexico's border cities. authorities in texas say increased violence between dug cartels in places like juarez make traveling there too dangerous. in the past officials just urged students to be careful. more than 16,000 people have died in mexico since december 2006. check out the surveillance video. a man fell on to light rail tracks into the station. he lost his balance there and fell into the track. two police assistants rushed in to save him. in the background you see the

headlight getting closer. >> we really didn't have the time to think about it. it was just something that we saw right in front of us and i feel like if we would have thought about it then the whole situation would have been different. >> according to the transit report, the man who fell was intoxicated. we have just received the latest monthly unemployment report, the jobless rate unchanged in february. our money expert jennifer westhoven is here. hey, jen. >> thanks, natasha. the economy is still losing jobs in the latest month. 36,000 jobs lost in january and the unemployment rate stayed steady at 9.7% and we're talking about 15 million people out of work. these numbers could havbeen affected by the blizzard with the snowstorms in cities including washington and philadelphia. a lot of economists are saying they don't want to make too much of the numbers because they don't know if they're making too much of it this month, with the snow, many people may have stayed home. in general, though, the trend

has been that a lot of companies are reluctant to start hiring even though technically, i mean, you wouldn't know it from the b market, but the economy is technically doing very well. in the latest three months it grew almost 6%, 5. % and that's the best growth rate we've seen in six years. sounds good, right? but the action hasn't moved into the job market yet and something we're still watching and companies get nervous about hiring people because if things don't keep growing in the economy that's a lot of extra cost. a man claimed to have psychic powers that he knew what the dow would do next, cheated people out of $6 million. he called himself america's profit, get it, profit? he claims he was trained by monks who taught him how to time travel. this is his website. you see it there. the sec promised big returns and

john patrick lived with his parents i california and drove from there to the d.c. area. he is linked to internet postings that showed resentment for the military. he calmly approached the two officers before he started shooting at them. >> it appears he's had some issues in the past. he has had a couple contacts with the law. he is a very well-educated indidual. right now we don't know if we have a motive yet. no indications at this point that there are any terrorism nes to this at all. at this time it appears to be a single individual that had issues. >> the two officers were grazed in the shooting and being treated at a hospital. we have brand-new video shot just minutes after a 6.8 magnitude aftershock hit chile. you see part of a damaged building collapsing here in concepcion.

meanwhile, the death toll may be lower than first thought. chilean officials can't confirm 200 deaths, but they consider those people missing. toy ata is accused of withholding crash data that might explain its sudden acceleration problems. jennifer westhoven has been closely tracking these new developments. >> people who watched the show for a while know i'm new to cars and i had no idea they have these black boxes in many cars. it's a data recorder, just like a black box in a plane. there are many in toyotas and the data in them could show in a specific crash if the driver was hitting the gas or brake pedal and if we could see many of them, it may be clues to what is causing this sudden acceleration problem. an associated press investigation found that toyota was secretive and frequently refused to share the data in those boxes with victims and survivors. now, you should know that toyota

says they did share it with federal safety regulators, but still questions whether the recall is fixed because dozens more drivers are complaining that their toyota took them to the dealers to be fixed. toyota says it's making it a top priority to quickly investigate any complaints. natasha? >> interesting development, jen, thank you. protests turned chaotic in some places, check it out. demonstrators at the university of california davis scuffled with riot police or police in riot gear and police fired pepper spray at the crowd and arrested one woman. protesters also tried to shut down interstate 80 and got as far as an exit ramp. students and teachers say the budget cuts and fee hikes hurt more than just their wallets. >> been here for about six years and i've watched this sort of steady decrease in the quality of work of my students. they don't have the time to put

as much effort into their work as they could, if they didn't have to work several jobs that same time while going to school full time. >> but others say california's public colleges are still a bargain. you're going to hear, though, how the price tag for an education there compares to other states in the u.s. that story is about 30 minutes away. tiger woods has returned to his home in florida and reports that his wife, elin, is there, too. joe carter is here with more on his apparent return. >> this is an indication that tiger is one step closer to building his relationship with elin. elin and the kids returned to their home in florida. seven media outlets including "people" magazine are reporting that the family is all back together under the same roof. this only two weeks after tiger's very public apology and after he reported week together in family therapy. tiger back on the driving range

a player that threw a punch during a college basketball game here is being punished. what is costing her?

this just in. a big accident just outside phoenix here in arizona. our affiliate knxv say rescuers are still trying to free people trapped in this overturned bus. it just looks like a mess. ladders on the outside of it, wonder if that's from the fire department. the accident involved the bus here, eight cars, as well, two semi trucks. medical choppers airlifted several people and at least 18 patients total and we believe five people may have died in this whole thing. we are waiting for more information, but the latest word is possibly still people trapped inside and rescuers trying to get them out. grief-stricken parents of california teen chelsea king are calling for tougher laws agast sexual predators after a

convicted child molester was charged with rape and murder in the death of their 17-year-old daughter. >> we are going to do everything in our power to work, to change the way people like this are dealt with so that they can't be let free to roam around and hurt our children. >> police didn't initially look at the suspect, john gardner here. he was registered as a sex offender 55 miles away. now, gardner is also charged with trying to rape a jogger in that same park in december. new this morning, the employment picture didn't get much better last month, but didn't get much worse either. our money expert jennifer westhoven breaks down these numbers for us. >> yes in the last month the

nation lost 36,000 jobs at a time when we can ill afford it but unemployment steady at 9.7%. and the government says about 15 million people, officially, are out of work. we know the numbers are bigger than that a lot of people working part-time jobs that wish they could have worked more. the records affected by the blizzards so it's hard to know how reliable they are. in general, the big picture here is that u.s. companies very reluctant and nervous about hiring right now, even though, technically speaking the economy is doing well, even though we don't feel it. in the latest three months, it grew by almost 6%. that's big growth. the best number we have seen in six years but we still haven't seen that action in the numbers really move into the job market yet and make a difference in people's lives. this just in, you're going to be able to touchnd actually try out that new ipad next month. apple has been calling it

west and our new storm system is coming right close to northern california, that is a cold front, comes in today, but the upper level support moves into southern california over the weekend and heavy rain possible and l.a. through san diego and see as much as one to one quarter inch of rain there. >> in l.a. when rain comes, people, no offense, i've lived there, ian say this, they don't know how to drive in the rain. >> it's not easy when you get that much in a short period of time. the jobless numbers are in. 36,000 jobs were lost last month and the unemployment rate at 9.7%. alison kosik is looking at how investors are taking this news. alison, is this good news or bad news for wall street? >> good morning. stocks are moving higher. but if you're one of those 36,000 people who lost their job last month, you're obviously, not celebrating. let's go ahead and look at that number. that 36,000 number is fewer than

expected. most analysts were expecting to see a loss of more than 60,000 because the two blizzards that hit the east coast last month kept a lot of workers at home and kept them from getting paid and count it as employed. the labor department said it's not possible to quantify on today's numbers and even though the job losses aren't huge, most analysts say the storms had at least some effect. so, we could wind up seeing an even better job's report next month. if you are unemployed, some help could be on the way. the house of representatives yesterday passed a $15 million jobs bill but lawmakers had to make change to it and the bill will have to go back to the senate and delay its passing until next week. it will exempt employers from social security pay roll tax physical they hire currently unemployed workers. natasha, back to you. >> alison kosik, live at the new york stock exchange. the battle for the best picture oscar could be turned into its own movie.
