good monday. the time right now is 6:00 a.m. eastern. so if you're, like, hey, what are they doing on an hour early? you forgot to change your clock. i'm robin meade. here's what's going on. investigators are raising questions about what really caused a runaway prius to speed out of control. why they're questioning the driver's panic claims in a 911 call. john edwards' former mistress is speaking out for the first time since their affair, but it's the photos that come with the interview that will have you talking.

plus, corey haim's death is being linked to a drug ring. what investigators are saying about that connection. but first, our top story. some details about a runaway prius may not be adding up. investigators with toyota and the federal government tested that car. and according to a new draft congressional memo, they could make the gas pedal stick like a california driver says it did. in fact, they say sikes' story about speeding out of control doesn't seem possible. but another says it's still hard to draw conclusions. >> maybe what was happening was not that his engine was overpowering the brakes but his brakes were incapable at that point of overpowering anything. it is possible that he's a liar. it is also possible that he simply misunderstood what was happening with this car. >> last monday sikes dialed 911 saying that he could not stop his prius which was hitting speeds of more than 90 miles an hour. sikes' attorney says that toyota has never been able to replicate the incident of sudden acceleration. we expect more from sikes'

attorney in a statement later on today. thousands of people in the northeast still do not have power this morning after a deadly weekend storm pounded the region. much of massachusetts is under a flood watch. after getting several inches of rain, at least several people were killed, many by falling trees. scenes like this were caught across the northeast as hurricane-force winds knocked down trees and power lines. >> i never saw the wind blow that hard in this neighborhood. i've been here ten years. that's the harde i've ever seen the wind blow. >> here's a familiar sight. this reporter in new jersey loses his hat and tries to keep balance during a live report. well, the poor thing, what's he holding on to? those winds are no joke, are they? they reached 72 miles an hour in the atlantic city area. floods are another problem in another region of the united states, too. more on that in a few minutes here. was he trying to hold on to that and that gave way, too? all right, john edwards' former mistress has broken her silence,

rielle hunter did an interview with "gq" and "the washington post" got a hope. some of the highlights, hunter says she's still in love with johnny. that's what she calls him, and believes he loves her. she slept togeer the first time they saw each other and she says she was afraid of john's wife elizabeth's wrath. now, we're working to get pictures and we'll show you those as soon as we have them. more juicy nuggets from the interview in the next half hour. the state department wants you to delay any nonessential trips to some parts of mexico. the mayor of juarez says that two americans killed there this weekend may have been targeted. the u.s. consulate employee and her husband were shot in their suv. their 1-year-old daughter survived. mexican security forces suspect a drug gang, but they will not discuss a motive. newly released documents show elin woods was not allowed

to ride with him in the ambulance the night he crashed his suv. why not? >> paramedics believe tiger's crash was the result of a domestic dispute. and as a result, they would not allowlin to ride along. that according to these records that were released by the florida highway patrol. in them also police say they found no evidence of a domestic dispute. actually, police said that after the fact. so they were confused by this initial account by the paramedics. now, the records also show is that elin turned over two bottles of prescription painkillers to officers, saying tiger had taken them earlier. and also, investigators apparently had trouble trying to get blood test resultsto see whether tiger had been drinking. the hospital wanted a warrant, but the state's attorney's office says there was not enough probable cause for one. all of that appears to be in the rearview mirror, though. a report now says tiger and elin have moved back in together. and we think we'll know this week exactly when he's coming back to golf. we'll have that later in the show. robin? >> all right. thank you so much. actor peter graves, the star

♪ the best memories ♪ i just want to let it go for tonight ♪ get this. women who take birth control live longer than women who don't. now, that's according to a new study. british researchers followed more than 46,000 women for about 40 years starting in 1968. experts found that the pill cut women's risk of dying from certain diseases by about 12%. doctors are not sure, though, exactly why, but the synthetic hormones in the pill may play a role. an avalanche that killed two people in canada may have been started by some daredevil snowmobilers racing up a slope. canadian police say that the snow started to give way as the snowmobilers were having a contest to seeho could leave the highest mark on the slope. about 200 people watching were also caught in the snow. police say that more people were not killed because of the many snowmobilers had avalanche recovery equipment and started to dig people out before rescuers got there.

we don't know if the snowmobi r snowmobilers who allegedly started the avalanche will be charged. look at that video. so the legal team representing a star nfl quarterback accused of sexual assault, ben roethlisberger. well, it's working hard to clear his name. here's rafer with more on that. are we learng something new? >> yeah, lawyers for ben roethlisberger have apparently hired a team of private investigators to look into te sexual assault allegation made against him by a 20-year-old college student. now, a lawyer representing the club where the alleged attack took place did confirm that he was contacted by one of roethlisberger's lawyers' p.i.s. now, his attorney says he's trying to know all the facts so he can perform his duties. my calls to that attorne have yet to be returned. roethlisberger still also has not been charged. also, new photos have emerged of roethlisberger posing with the cop that wrote out the incident report. now, the chief of police says these photos were taken hours before the allegations were

made. and he says he's not concerned by them. the officer, sergeant jerry blash, had seen roethlisberger earlier in the evening, and beyond filing the report, blash has not been involved in the investigation, says the chief. a head coach in the nfl is trying to combat obesity. rex ryan of the new york jets confirmed that he has had lap band surgery over the weekend. >> no kidding! >> he's frequently poked fun at himself anhis midsection, including after this video of him changing into a jersey at a hockey game, had us giggling a little bit. now, i hope it didn't force him to go and do something drastic, but it worked for john daly. there will be no cheese rolling this year. >> you're kidding. >> a tradition that dates back hundreds of years. >> giving us many hours of fun. >> accusement as these people hurt themselves. apparently people hurting themselves is one of the reasons why damage to locals' property.

depiction of the prophet muhammed. her mother can't believe it. >> she made these decisions. she's 31 years old. she decided to do this. it wasn't anything that i did. but, you know, it's kind of hard to accept that i'm the mother of a terrorist now. >> now that colorado woman is being linked to the case of the woman known as jihad jane. colleen la rose from pennsylvania has been indicted in the united states. seven people are believed to be involved in the murder plot. actor corey haim's death has been linked to a massive drug ring. california attorney's general says it involves illegal prescriptions. the coroner has not said what killed haim yet, but the attorney general says tha haim's name was found during the investigation, and it involved recent prescriptions for oxycontin. now, he did not say whether any of those meds found in haim's apartment were illegally obtained. we may not know the cause of haim's death for another six weeks y. his funeral is scheduled to take

place tomorrow in his hometown of toronto. john edwards' former mistress, rielle hunt, is taking shots at the man who wrote a tell-all book about their affair. "the washington post" writes about an upcoming "gq" interview where she says it was andrew young's idea to pretend her baby was his and not edwards'. she says the money funneled to her by campaign donors was a gift and not hush money. lawyers for edwards did not respond to e-mails from "the post" to comment. the thing that a lot of people are talking about is the pictures from t article of rielle hunter. we're working to get legal clearances for those now and we'll show you those as soon as we have that. your perfume could get you in big trouble in detroit. the city is asking workers not to wear perfume, cologne or anything with a strong scent like even an air freshener. now, "the detroit news" reports it's a reaction to a worker winning a $100,000 lawsuit. she said that a coworker's perfume made it hard to breathe

looking for a son, his friend. people were looking everywhere. there was a giant panic the first ten minutes. >> police say that more people were not killed because many of the snowmobilers had avalanche recovery equipment and started digging people out before the rescuers could even get there. we don't know if the snowmobilers who originally started the avalanche will be charged. women who take birth control live longer than women who don't take birth control. british researchers followed more than 46,000 women for about 40 years. starting in 1968. and the experts found that the pill cut women's risk of dying from certain diseases by about 12%. doctors are not as sure exactly why that is but the synthetic hormones in the pill may play a role. a lawyer for nfl star quarterback ben roethlisberger has hired a p.i., a private investigato investigator, to look into the sexual assault claim. rafer has the report.

what it means is we don't want to see more bailouts, do we? >> exactly. what you just said. we -- no more $700 billion bailouts. the senate banking chairman chris dodd is set to unveil the latest version of this bill. and it is supposed to address the too big to fail issue, right? that a bank or an insurance company, aig, can get so big that it could bet the farm and then not only go down itself but take the whole economy with it and then we have to bail it out. so under this, banks would not be able to take such wild risks. they'd have to hold on to more of your money. that's what they mean when you hear about capital requirements. you can bet part of the farm but not the whole thing. the federal reserve will get more pow twoer scrutinize those big banks to make sure they don't get too big that they are risking the whole economy, not just themselves. today is march 15th. and that means you've got just a month before it's the tax deadline. april 15th. so we're going to do tax tips all this week.

unexpected benefit. all about the hormones. first technicians have run every test that they could think of on a runaway prius. but they've come up empty. last monday a california driver said that he slammed on the brakes when his gas pedal got stuck. but his speeding prius would not stop. investigators say every time they pushed on the gas and the brakes at the same time, the engine shut off and that the car slowed down. one expert says it's still hard to draw conclions, though. >> maybe what was happening was not that his engine was overpowering the brakes but his brakes were incapable at that point of overpowering anything. it is possible he's a liar. it's also possible he simply misunderstood what was happening to his car. >> the driver's attorney says toyota has never been able to replicate an incident of sudden acceleration. we expect to hear more from that attorney in a statement later today. john edwards' former mistress has broken her silence. rielle hunter did an interview

cables off, boom, boom, each house. you can see it tore off all that stuff over on that house. then it just snapped that telephone pole like a toothpick. here's a familiar sight. you've got a reporter in new jersey losing his hat trying to keep his balance during a live shot. people at the assignment desk are line, yeah. the winds are no joke. he's holding a piece of metal that flew off the roof of a high-rise. floods are going to be a problem in another region of the united states as well. more on that in a few minutes. the state department wants you to delay a nonessential trips to some parts of mexico. the mayor of ciudad jaurez says two americans killed there this weekend may have been targeted. the u.s. consulate employee and her husband were shot in their suv. thei1-year-old survived. mexican security forces suspect a drug gang, but they will not discuss a motive. newly released documents show that tiger woods' wife, elin, was not allowed to ride in the ambulance with him the night that he crashed his suv.

so obviously your first question, rafer, is, well, why not? good morning. >> good morning. there was so much speculation after that crash with the windows being smashed out and why did that happen. well, paramedics thought tiger's crash was the result or on the heels of a domestic dispute and because of that would not allow elin to ride along. that is according to records released by the florida highway patrol. police still say they found no evidence of any domestic dispute and tiger did deny it when he made that public apology. also, elin turned over two bottles of prescription painkillers to officers saying tier had ta tiger had taken them earlier. the state's attorney's office says there was not enough probable cause for a warrant. meanwhile, "south park" will be weighing in on tiger's marital problems. we'll have that later in the show. >> and they're usually just -- how can i say? relentless. they just put it out there, what they're going to say. that should be interesting. thank you.

just are not there right now. yeah. that will get your attention. did you see that? a police officer in kansas city got tossed several feet after a car slammed into another during a traffic stop. now, police stopped e first car for suspected drunk driving. the cop that got tossed walked away with a few bruises. police think the guy who smashed into the parked cars was also driving drunk. all right. a lawyer for ben roethlisberger has hired a private investigator now to look into a sexual assault claim against him. so they're going their own route, trying to get their own evidence against the young person accusing him? >> yeah. or just to clear his name in general. the perception -- i've spoke to regular folks -- excuse me -- about this is that whether he's guilty or not, roethlisberger has so many resources it would be hard to prove. well, this kind of speaks to that a little bit. reports are his lawyer hired the best private investigator that

money can buy. and that pi is making the rounds to try to clear his name. now, a lawyer for the club where the alleged assault took place told -- confirmed that the pi did contact him. meanwhile, roethlisberger's attorney says he's just trying to know all the facts so he can perform his duties. my calls to that attorney have not been returned. roethlisberger still has not been charged. the torney doesn't think he will be. meanwhile, could he be getting star treatment? photos surfaced with him posing with the cop who filled out the report. the chief of police insists these photos were taken hours before the allegations were made and that beyond filling out the report, this officer has not been involved in their investigation. again, no charges have been filed. > in other news, a big-time head coach in the nfl is trying to fight his waistline. rex ryan of the new york jets confirmed he had lap band surgery this weekend. the 47-year-old often is poked fun of his weight.

obtained. we may not know the cause of haims' death for another six week. his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow in toronto. the white house wants big changes to the no child left behind law. here are some of the highlights. it supports expanding charter schools, it gives schools more flexibility in how they spend federal dollars, it allows them to change the way they pay teachers and principals. >> the bottom 5% of schools, those schools where 50%, 60%, 70% of kids are dropping out, we have to challenge the status o quo. those decisions are always made at local level. we can't continue standing o the sidelines when we have high schools that are basically dropout factories. >> former president bush set up the no child left behind policy but critics say there wasn't enough money for it and schools need more flexibility to meet the goals. a missionary who spent more than a month behind bars in haiti is back home in idaho. it was an emotional homecoming at the airport on saturday. charisa coulter was one of ten

senate to make sure that $700 billion bank bailout never happens again. we don't want to see it again. our money expert jennifer westhoven, good morning. >> good morning. because the conditions right now, exactly the same. you might think, but we all hated that, right? we were all pretty much as a consensus, nobody liked the bailout. what do we do to make sure it doesn't happen? senate banking chairman chris dodd isue to unveil the latest version of the bill addressing that too big to fail issue. that the bank can get so big and can bet so much, they're not just betting the bank anymore. they could be betting the entire economy along with them. so in the future with this bill, banks would have to hold on to more of your money. it's called higher capital requirements. the fed would also get more power to scrutinize big banks and make sure they're not taking such big risks that we may have to come in and clean up. all right. today is march 15th. that means it's just a month to go before april 15th. tax day. so we've got tax tips all this

police in california got dozens of calls over the weekend after they released some photos of women whose pictures they found in a former "dating game" contestant's storage unit. rodney alcala is a convicted serial killer now. police say two women in the photos were found alive.
