second term this fall. dixie carter has died. you probably remember best as julia sugarbaker. she was 70 years old and we don't know the cause of her death yet. carter was a native of tennessee and drawn to roles portrayi ini southern women. in 2007 she was dominated for an emmy, guest appearance for "desperate housewives." she had a long career in broadway. carter is survived by her husband and two daughters. a fee for your carry on luggage? it's not going to happen if one lawmaker gets his way. last week spirit airlines announced it would be the first to charge for carry on bags and we're talking up to 45 bucks a bag. well, senator charl schumer from new york calls that a slap in the face to travelers and wants the feds to step in to prevent airlines for charging that kind of fee. schumer says carry-ons are a necessity and he's appealing to the treasury department which can rule on the issue to do

adding a layer too the story line as the drama unfolds on the course, while they have others battle for golf's prestigious prize. on friday afternoon 11-year-old nadya bloom went for a bike ride near her florida home, but she never returned. as lewis boldin with our affiliate wkmg tells us, bloom's disappearance has triggered a massive search. >> more than 100 searchers spent all day scouring for any sign of 11-year-old nadia bloom. >> frustrating for everybody. we want to help. you want to do something, but right now i guess all we can do is just wait. >> reporter: the divers and searchers are determined to find nadia, despite extremely tough terrain. >> this is very thick, really wet. there's water involved. of course we have lake jessup to north as well. it's alligator season as well. that doesn't help either. we have really good resources. really good dogs and people have

he was shot in the chest and was one of two teens who was shot. the other was a 15-year-old girl shot in the leg. families of the men who died in an explosion at a west virginia coal mine are saying good-bye. four funerals were held friday. more are held this weekend. still more in the coming weeks. 29 men died in the blast at the upper big mine branch last monday. the community held out hope the four missing men were still alive somewhere in that mine, but those hopes did end friday night when rescuers found the men's bodies. >> what i saw up until the absolute very end was a very heavy-hearted community holding on to a very fragile thread of hope. and when that hope snapped with one sentence from the mine officials, it was the most painful excruciating thing you could possibly see. >> the explosion was the worst mine disaster in the u.s. since the 1970s.

president obama has a very urgent message for 47 countries taking part in a two-day conference. make sure your nuclear material is secure. keep it out of hands of terrorists. he's hosting a two-day nuclear summit in washington tomorrow comes a couple days after the u.s. warned al qaeda is trying to get an atomic bomb. the u.s. and russia will use the summit as a backdrop to sign an agreement to get rid of plutonium from weapons. one mom was fed up with what her son was posting on facebook. so what did she do? she changed his password. now he's taking her to court.

the earthquake that rattled the islands did not set off a tsunami. the 6.8 magnitude quake hit about 130 miles southeast of the island's chains capital city. a witness says the city felt the powerful effects of the tremor but major damage or injuries are not being reported yet.

the solomons are in the pacific ring of fire. frequently rocked by earthquakes. there have been a number of devastating quakes around the world this year. the number of earthquakes isn't actually increasing but hitting populated areas more often because the world's population is growing. one geologist says earthquakes the size of the one that destroyed port-au-prince, haiti, happen 15 to 20 times every year and mostly in areas with little or no population. look at this. a landmark that has graced the dallas/ft. worth metroplex since 1971 here now just falling right into a pile of rubble. and dust for that matter. texas stadium home to the dallas cowboys through their five super bowl championships is a goner folks. team moved to a new billion-dollar stadium last season. they imploded the stadium to

make way for a road construction project. death threats against lawmakers are way up and the bitter debate over health care is blamed for it. the senate sergeant in arms says members of congress have reported 42 incidents since january, nearly three times more than the same period last year. three people have been arrested for threatening lawmakers. the most notable case last week when gregory giusti taken into custody in san francisco. he made dozens of calls to the home of house speaker nancy pelosi making verbal attacks described as extremely vulgar and crude. it was no problem at all for rick and clayton anderson to lug a 1,700 pound tank this morning. they're just floating around. the two astronauts wrapped up a space walk after hooking up the tank to the international space station's cooling system. during another space walk on tuesday the old tank they replaced will be put in the

shuffle "discovery"'s cargo bay for a return trip to earth. a 16-year-old boy is going to court with his own mother over a fight involving facebook. denise nu of arkansas said her son was posting things on his account that would make your eyes pop out. he says he wrote things about driving in his car at nearly 100 miles an hour. one day when he did not log off mama posted things on his account then changed the password. the boy who lives with his grandmother decided to file a complaint. now his mom's been charged with harassment. yeah. and she talked about it on hln's "prime news." listen. >> we had a very good relationship. we were very, very close. he tells me -- or told me things about himself that most parents only dream that their kids would tell them. you know -- >> when was the last time you spoke with him? >> i haven't spoken to him in

a family sent their adopted russian son back to that country alone is now talking to cnn. his adoptive grandmother says the russian orphanage where they adopted him seven months ago misled him about his mental stability and other issues as well. the family put him on a plane back to russia and says he's

violent and mentally unstabled. the mood outraged many russians. u.s. officials are now investigating. a 17-year-old boy is dead and several other people wounded in what police describe as a shootout at a crowded shopping mall here. police in oklahoma say it's not clear if the teen was involved in the shootout or was just a bystander. the mall was packed with people going to a festival. they ran when four or five shots were fired. >> people running and screaming everywhere, and, like, pulling the gates down on their stores, like pulling their signs in and saying that somebody had a gun and they were shooting and everyone was just trying to get out of the mall. >> police are looking for three people. they want to question about the shooting. the 2012 presidential election is more than two years away, but republicans are already talking about recapturing the white house. at a weekend gathering of the southern republican leadership conference, a narrow margin separated two possible nominees. former massachusetts governor

spending of the money, including paying to reimburse a noncommittee staffer for a $2,000 tab at a sex-themed california nightclub. donors have questioned huge increases in spending on private jets, limo trips and meals. all that led some top advisers to cut ties with steele and north carolina state party chief to call for his resignation. anti-government protesters in thailand refusing to back down after deadly clashes with soldiers. more than 20 people have died. most of them civilians. more than 800 people have been injured in all this. the protesters known as red shirts want the prime minister to dissolve the legislature and call new elections. they're refusing to negotiate though until that happens. they're also threatening to parade with bodies of the dead protesters. let's just say you checked the box on your driver's license to become an organ donor because after your death you want someone to have your liver. but what if there's a mistake

montgomery crashed her car on interstate 10 in los angeles. another driver smashed into the back of her car and died. even though her car was parked and she wasn't in it, prosecutors say she was responsible because she didn't leave the lights on. >> it was an interesting case legally. based on the fact that she wasn't operating her car when it was struck but had been operating it moments before that. we felt like elements for intoxicati intoxication manslaughter were there. >> montgomery admitted she drank 24 beers the night she crashed her car. she'll have to spend 128 days in jail and ten years on probation. when sarah palin is in the p spotlight, tina fey can't be far behind.
