400 people. in one town more than 85% of people's houses collapsed. a military official says people are buried in the rubble and soldiers are trying to pull them out with their bare hands. the first quake was a 6.9 magnitude tremor near tibet. it was quickly followed by several strong aftershocks. new this morning, the obama administration's mortgage relief plan isn't keeping up with the foreclosure crisis. that new report comes from an independent panel that congress set up. it says for every home being saved, ten are falling into foreclosure. bank executives told congress yelled they support loan modifications but only on a limited scale. police have released the incredible 911 call made moments after a missing florida girl was found alive, in an alligator-infested swamp. take a look at 11-year-old nadia bloom, waving from the stretcher after being rescued. a member of her family's church

found her after setting out on his own search in waist deep water. when he called 911 dispatchers asked to speak to nadia. >> i'm going to put you on speakerphone. hold on just a second. let me see if i can get this working baby. >> hi, this is nadia. i'm the girl that got lost. >> nadia, are you okay? you're not hurt in any way? >> after nearly four days in the swamp, police say nadia was dehydrated and covered with bug bites but otherwise okay. she is mildly autistic, and her parents think she wandered off while trying to make a nature video. they were overwhelmed to hear that she was safe. >> it just shows the compassion of the human spirit, when things like this happen, and it gives, it should give everybody encouragement, it really should. >> the man who found nadia, james king, says that the lord guided him to where she was. detectives questioned him about the rescue and they're calling him a hero.

toyota is telling dealers to stop selling the new lexus gx460 for now after "consumer reports" said it is not safe. jennifer westhoven, what is the latest? >> thanks, natasha. the latest, toyota is going to temporarily stop selling this expensive suv that's been called a safety risk, asked dealers to stop selling the new 2010 lexus gx460 after "consumer reports" said don't buy it, afraid it wasn't safe enough to drive. the magazine rarely says don't buy about any kind of a car, hasn't done that in almost ten years but it was concerned. they took it through a lot of test drives and concerned on a tight turn like an exit ramp or on a turn and there was an obstacle and suddenly you had to brake there were concerns it was too likely to rollover. toyota and lexus are determined to identify and correct the issue that "consumer reports"

identified." >> jennifer, thank you very much. we've got brand new video of the little boy sent back to russia by his adoptive family in tennessee. the boy will celebrate his eighth birthday this week. the tennessee family says he is violent and has deep behavioral problems but russia's top children's welfare official says the family is lying and the boy is in good health. >> how can you imagine that 7-year-old boy can be a menace, a danger for the family, for the adult sneem. >> people? >> the official says he's a very nice boy. russia is threatening to freeze all adoptions of their children. any in 2008 were taken from biological parents deemed unfit by state agencies. the tea partiers are headed to the home of the real deal today. sarah palin's the headlining speaker at a tea party boston

in. one person who won't be there is massachusetts senator scott brown. the tea party movement celebrated his win but a political expert says brown should avoid being identified with the group if he wants to be reelected. nebraska's governor has signed two ground-breaking abortion bills into law. one bans abortions after 20 weeks baste based on the assertion a fetus can feel pain. the other requires doctors to screen women for mental or physical problems before performing an abortion. they're designed to shut down one of the few doctors who will perform late-term abortions in nebraska. >> i didn't find this bill. it found nebraska, in that we have a provider in this state that wants to perform late-term abortions. >> viability needs to be determined one on one with a woman and her consulting responsible doctor. >> one abortion rights group already appears to be gearing up for a court challenge. it says the new laws are "flatly

unconstitutional." do you love the red sox and have trouble pronouncing your rs? there may be a show just for you. casting has begun for "wicked summer" a boston-based reality show similar to "jersey shore." a casting director is looking for people to live, last together and drink together. my boston accent is not that great but some locals are excited. >> i would definitely be on that. >> reporter: do you have a nice accent? >> like, pack the car? >> the show is said to start filming in july. his was much better. >> what was the last one? >> i don't know, but he sounded like we an accent from up there to me. >> i grew up 200 miles away from there and that made no sense the last guy. live together, fight together, drink together, forget about it. but that's new york. i would have missed that, the boston one but the jersey shore they already closed cast plus

i'm about 15 years older than everybody else and the spray-on abs, can't do it. big area of low pressure across montana sliding into canada. look at the frontal boundary, the cold front warming into the warm front. it's interesting to look when you show that scenario going on, the warm air sandwiched in between the cold air. the current temperature readings, sioux falls, south dakota, 58. 63 degrees in omaha, 38 degrees rapid city. 43 in duluth. 54 in minneapolis. 49 in chicago so the cold air is up over the great lakes, through the northeast, and down through the mid-atlantic. a little bit of rain activity, too, stronger thunderstorms overnight last night. there was a falling apart. look out west in texas, rain around el paso to the east of here, getting in towards new mexico. more radar pictures south of i-70, thunderstorms popping up this morning in towards nebraska, rain around areas, we'll talk about that in a little bit.

state senator ted deutsche got 62% of the votes to beat republican ed lynch. they were fighting over robert wexler's seat. this is considered a big win for democrats. lynch used the backlash to the new health care bill as a big part of his campaign. some people are smelling trouble among mit university students and when we say smelling we really mean it here. >> pretty good, and then this is directly smelliness of the average person. >> you got it, he's talking about b.o., and that's happening amongst some students. how do you solve this? you'll hear one creative idea that's new for new about 35 minutes. the big banks stay debt forgiveness may not be the answer to preventing forclosures and isn't fair to people who pay their mortgage on time. jennifer westhoven is here with that. >> the big issues, how do we

prevent foreclosures. economists tend to say, look, we've got to do something about it, because if we don't, lots of neighborhoods are going to go down, and more people are going to end up hurt if we don't do anything. that's one argument out there. well, they turned to some of the big mortgage companies and said, how come you aren't doing that? this is at a congressional panel. why aren't you forgiving some of the debt by cutting the principle? >> we caution that applying principle reductions on a broad scale could raise issues of fairness among consumers. >> broad-based principle reduction could result in decreased access to credit and higher cost for consumers, because lenders will price for principle forgiveness risk. less affluent borrowers will likely be harmed disproportionately. >> okay, translation, number one, the first guy said, because it's not fair, to everybody who is paying their debts.

number two, the second guy said, if we do this, then people who don't have great credit scores are going to have an even harder time borrowing, because the bank doesn't want to lend you money if you say i borrowed 100 bucks but can only pay you back 90. that's what they said, that was their defense. chase said cutting debt so no one owes more than their homes are worth would cost too much. back to you. >> all right, jennifer, thank you so much. an alleged mistress, an alleged mistress of jesse james is speaking out, and wait until you hear michelle magee's message to actress sandra bullock.

a florida high school baseball player is overcoming incredible odds after losing a leg and parts of another one in a horrific boating accident. ray's back in this morning with that story. >> i'll tell you what, natasha, this kid is my new hero. two summers ago nate winters was thrown from a boat and nearly shredded to pieces and doctors are surprised how much he survived. he is today's true champion. nate lost most of his left leg in that accident and parts of his right leg. yet on monday here he was the 16-year-old, first start for his high school team since the accident using a prosthetic, pitched 4 1/2 innings, allow the one run. fastball clocked at 80 miles an hour. his coach said his fierce competitiveness is why nate is alive today. what a story. another great story from the in, "new york times," mark teixeira more or less dedicating his season to a one-time

promising pitcher who sadly enough succumbed to cancer last month. he's inscribing his name and jersey number on the inside of his cap. he flew the boy's family in to see the home opener yesterday. all signs point to tiger woods playing in this year's u.s. open held at pebble beach. the u.s. golf association confirming it received woods' entry form on monday. there is still no indication on when or if tiger will play in any tournaments before the u.s. open. now imagine the shock a krispy kreme employee got when she opened the window and saw phil mickelson sporting the green jacket a day after he won the masters, the photo was sent to us by one of our i-reporters. the manager then gave mickelson hayes doughnuts for free. his order very tasty, a dozen each of glazed, chocolate and mixed doughnuts. >> he's earned it. >> let's hope he doesn't get any

the sheriff's office would not say why it searched but a familiar name came up during a brief news conference. >> reporter: this going from a missing person's case to a homicide investigation? >> that is a decision that will be made later. >> reporter: can you tell us where she is? >> she has been brought back for an interview and at that moment i can't tell you exactly where she is. >> misty crossland, the estranged wife of haleigh's father. she denies any involvement in haleigh's disappearance but authorities say her story is missing key details. president obama says this week's nuclear summit made real progress toward improving the security of nuclear arsenals around the world. for instance, mexico, ukraine and canada have all agreed to eliminate uranium stockpiles or

convert it to safer fuel. the big disappointment was there's no agreement with china and russia on setting tougher sanctions against iran over its nuclear program. >> sanctions aren't a magic wand. what sanctions do accomplish is hopefully to change the calculus of a country like iran, so that they see that there are more costs and benefits to pursuing a nuclear weapons program. >> another headline out of the two-day summit, the u.s. and russia agreed to eliminate weapons-grade plutonium from their military programs. that's secretary of state hillary clinton with russian foreign minister sergei lavrov. they'll get rid of material to make 7,000 nuclear weapons >> it took two police cars to stop this driver in michigan. he took off after a traffic stop for loitering in the parking lot. he weefd in and out of traffic for about five minutes before he

nebraska and parts of colorado. later today the tail end of the cold front up to the north a little bit of humidity in the atmosphere, some weak energy rotating around. western texas might get a couple bigger thunderstorms this afternoon but so far, just some light rain around i-10, stretching in towards i-20. that's something we're watching for the first part of the day. the middle part of kansas i-70, a little thunderstorm complex rolling over towards the east, not a big deal, just a little bit of rain out that, no hail or gusty winds. the rain gets more scattered in areas, areas like central nebraska, headed towards omaha and lincoln later this morning. minneapolis, dry, scattered from the ground. the actual rain sitting back off to the west. some of these are going to turn into stronger thunderstorms this afternoon, most likely get a couple of delays at the airport at msp later this afternoon so that's something we're watching as well. back to the west, more snow, remember yesterday great falls the worst weather in the still, still this morning. heavy snow, winds whipping around 30 to 40 miles per hour,

globe." they talk about how stupid and we don't listen, we tape our passwords on our computer. this study found they are missing something. they're missing the cost of our time, when everybody has to stop working to do these things, it is a huge productivity hit. the study says that i.t. should prioritize, they should alert us when it's a real threat, like how to spot phishing e-mails. you may have to pay more this summer for yourbergs. >> no! >> natasha is upset, whether it's on the grill, at a restaurant and that's mcdonald's, and steakhouses, because it was so cold out. you already knew that it hiked prices for tomatoes and oranges. it meant thinner cows, they spent more time being really cold, couldn't put on the weight that turns into your meat. but this season, cattle prices have really spiked early this year, it's been one of the biggest price hikes they've seen in many years. back to you. >> my goodness.

world series ring from the year before they switched it with a fake one. >> oh, that's mean. >> turns out derek jeter plays . derek jeter was behind the whole thing. eventually matsui was given his real ring. that's a lot better, a lot more expensive. after four years the streak is over, a young nba fan hanging up his favorite team's jersey. the 12-year-old boy wore a detroit pistons jersey, but decided he wanted to end the streak on an even number. over the course of the streak the young man said he wore at least nine different jerseys. it runs in his family, because his brother did a streak and ended it a few years ago. the octuplets mom had a long chat with ms. oprah winfrey herself. the interview will air next tuesday on the oprah winfrey show and suleman talks about how she is raising his 14 kids.

after a missing florida girl was found alive in an alligator-infested swamp. look at 11-year-old nadia bloom waving from her stretcher after her rescue yesterday. a member of her family's church found her after setting out on his search in waist deep water. >> yeah, i'll put you on speaker phone. hold on just a second. let me see -- >> hi, this is nadia. i'm the girl that got lost. >> nadia, are you hurt in any way? >> after four days in the swamp nadia was dehydrated and covered in bug bites but otherwise okay. she is mildly ostistic and her parents think she wandered off while trying to make a nature video. >> it just shows the compassion of the human spirit like things like this happen.

30 minutes. a florida high school baseball player is overcoming incredible odds after losing a leg and parts of another in a horrific boating accident. ray is back in this morning with that story. >> what a comeback, natasha. about 500 people in attendance from this and from what i read not a dry eye in the house. two summers ago nate winters was thrown from a boat and nearly shredded to pieces by the propeller and to this day doctors still baffled how he was able to survive. nate lost most of his left leg in that accident and parts of his right leg, yet, on monday, here he was, the 16-year-old in his first start for his high school baseball team since that accident using a prosthetic he pitched 4 1/2 innings and even his fastball was clocked at 80 miles per hour and this guy is just incredible. his coach saying his fierce competitiveness is why nate is

prayers. >> that guy, king, called 911 ask then wrapped toilet paper around a tree to mark their spot and police used his cell phone signal and gps coordinators to find them in the swamp. president obama says this week's nuclear summit made progress towards imuv prooing the security of nuclear arsenals around the world. mexico, ukraine have agreed to convert it to safer fuel, but the big disappointment was there was no agreement with china and russia on setting sanctions on its nuclear program. >> sanctions aren't a magic wand. what sanctions do accomplish is hopefully to change the calculus of a country like iraq so that they see that there are more costs and fewer benefits to pursuing a nuclear weapons program. >> another headline out of the two-day summit, the u.s. and russia agreed to eliminate

police have released the incredible 911 call made just moments after a missing florida girl was found alive in an alligator infested swamp. take a look here at 11-year-old nadia bloom. she is waving her hand from her stretcher from her rescue yesterday. a member of her family's church found her after setting out on a zone to search for her in waist-deep water. when he called 911 dispatchers asked to speak to nadia. >> yeah, i'll put you on speaker phone. hold on just a second. let me see if i can get this working baby. >> hi, this is nadia. i'm the girl who got lost? >> you're not hurt in any way? >> after nearly four days in the swamp, police say nadia was dehydrated and covered in bug bites. she is mildly autistic and they thought she wandered off to make a nature video. they were overwhelmed to hear she was safe.

>> it just shows the compassion of the human spirit when things like this happen and it should give everybody encouragement. it really should. >> the man who found nadia, james king, said the lord guided him to where she was. they're calling him a hero. we'll hear from king in the next half hour. new this morning, a series of powerful earthquakes in china may have killed about 400 people. 10,000 people are believed to be injured right now. a chinese news agency says many victims including young school children are buried underneath debris. rescuers are using their bare hands to dig out survivors. a 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit near tibet this morning quickly followed by several strong aftershocks. toyota is telling dealers to stop selling the new lexus gx 46 o, for now. that's after consumer reports said the suv is not safe. jennifer westhoven has been closely looking into toyota's safety issues since the very beginning.

what's going on? >> toyota already in hot water, shall we say. this is one of its crown jewel cars. it will stop selling this expense v suv because the magazine says the car is too dangerous to drive. it is the lexus gx 460. consumer reports said don't buy it. it's very rare for them to say something like that. they haven't said something like that in ten years. they're concerned when you're going around a turn that there's too much of a risk that the car might roll over. a spokesman said toyota and lexuses are determined to identify and correct the issue that consumer reports identified. these cars, natasha, sell for about $60,000. >> that's a chunk, especially with the economy. >> that is a lot for, you know, for even a new car. i would suspect that a lot of people who bought them thought one of the reasons they were paying for all that was because

they were getting a lot of safety, as well. >> that's a good point. especially being a larger vehicle. jen, thank you very much for that appreciate it. nebraska's governor has signed two groundbreaking abortion bills into law. one bans abortions after 20 weeks based on the aassertion that the fetus can feel pain. the other requires doctors to screen women before having an abortion. >> i didn't find this bill, it found nebraska in that we have a provider in this state that wants to perform late-term abortions. >> liability needs to be determined one-on-one with a woman and her consulting responsible doctor. >> one abortion rights group already appears to be gearing up for a court challenge. it says the new laws are "flatly unconstitutional." michelle mcgee is apologizing to actress sandra bullock about having an affair with her husband, jesse james. mcgee feels bad about the whole

16 empty past the hour divers have been searching a murky river in the possible break in the haleigh cummings'

case. the sheriff office would not say what led to the search, but they had spoken to the family and were also questioning misty croslin who was baby-sitting the night she disappeared. both have been in custody on drug charges. she may have shed some light on who was responsible for haleigh's disappearance and someone else may have been implicated. she woke up at 3:00 a.m. to find haleigh missing and the back door propped open. she denies any involvement in her disappearance. a republican running for governor in oklahoma says a voluntary militia would be okay if it didn't use force against the government. tea party leaders support the idea of a group to help oversee a self-reaching government. >> my ideas and my goal of good

prosthetic nate pitched 4 1/2 innings and allowed one run and even his fastball, get this, was clocked at 80 miles an hour. his coach says his fierce competitiveness is why nate is alive today. you go, young man. yankee star mark teixeira more or less dedicating his season to a one-time promising high school pitcher who succumbed to cancer last year. he is honoring the young man by inscribing his name and jersey number on the inside of his ball cap and flew the boy's family in to see the yankee home opener yesterday. great gesture by him. meantime, all signs point to tiger woods playing in this year's u.s. open, which will be held in june at pebble beach. the u.s. golf association says they received his form on monday. there is still no indication, though, if woods will play any tournaments before the u.s. open. now, imagine the shock a krispy kreme employee got when she rolled down the window and

sfau start. what's the latest? >> it was a very rare thing for "consumer reports" to say don't buy this. in response toyota says they will temporarily stop selling this. this is an expensive suv, by the way. it's worth about -- you'd buy them for about $60,000. but after the "consumer reports" magazine said don't buy it because it's too dangerous. this is a new 2010 lexus gx-460. "consumer reports" hasn't said anything like that in about ten years, so very rare for them to say something like this. basically they found on some of their test drives that the suv was just too likely to possibly roll over in a turn scenario, like maybe on an exit ramp. a spokesman for toyota and lexus says they are determined to identify and correct the issue identified by "consumer reports." >> we'll see what happens next. >> it undermines that idea that if you pay a lot for something, that you think you're getting the best of the best.

el paso. you can see it stretching into new mexico. later today, a little daytime heating and what moisture is available, we could see a couple of thunderstorms redevelop with the afternoon sun. so far looking at just basically rain pockets right around kansas, stretching into nebraska. you can see it coming out of the grand island area and down by lincoln but most of it will be on the light side. minneapolis, you have the clouds in place, up to the west a little light rain as well, all moving in an easterly direction. you get rain this afternoon and west of here it's all snow, heavy at times. especially right around great falls, now beginning to fall apart too. so we have the winter storm warning until noon your time. 1 to 2 inches of snow for a grand total of 5 to 10 but things are beginning to wind down. the east coast, high pressure dominating for the most part, weak cold front by secretari secretaries -- bisects the coastline. you're talking about 80 degrees

they're designed to shut down one of the few doctors who will perform late-term abortions in nebraska. >> i didn't find this bill, it found nebraska in that we have a provider in this state that wants to perform late-term abortions. >> viability needs to be determined one-on-one with a woman and her consulting, responsible doctor. >> one abortion rights group already appears to be gearing up for a court challenge. it says that the new laws are, quote, flatly unconstitutional. a bad hair day can actually translate to a bad mood, according to a poll by the magazine sharp smart. many women say their mood has been affected by a bad hair day and some have even cried after getting a haircut. the poll also found women spend about $200 on hair cuts every year and nearly 300 if she gets her hair colored. all right. just one more day to file your

taxes, so who prepared your taxes? did you have an accountant do it? did you do it yourself? many people did things a little differently this year. maybe they tried to write off hair cuts, who knows. jennifer westhoven is here. >> a lot of people decided, you know, i think i'm going to try to save a little money and i'm going to take them on, i'm going to do my taxes myself. the irs tells "usa today" that 6% more returns are coming in self-prepared. more of you are saying i'm going to do it. people are trying to save money. you know, it costs about $230 roughly to have an accountant do your taxes, and then if you move or you do this and need other forms it can cost a lot more. the paper says turbo tax sales are up 10%. the foreclosure problem, there are a lot of economists who believe that this is still a big threat to the economy. we've been talking a lot about recovery, dow 11,000. but if americans keep losing their homes to foreclosure, that could threaten the little

recovery that we have going on, which hasn't even translated into the job market, as i know a lot of you are well aware of. congress asks the big mortgage chiefs why they aren't doing more to cut the principal for some people so that at least they could stay in their home and the bank could get something instead of an empty home. here's one of them. >> we caution that applying principal reductions on a broad scale could raise issues of fairness among consumers. >> now, i think there are a lot of people who think about fairness but i wonder from the bank side, to they really worry about fairness? anyway, chase also says it would cost too much to help out. an alleged mistress of jesse james is speaking out. wait till you hear michelle mcgee's apology to actress sandra bullock.

was thrown from a boat, nearly shredded to pieces by the propeller. well, to this day doctors are still baffled how he was able to survive. nate lost most of his left leg in that accident and parts of his right leg but yet here he was on monday. the 16-year-old pitcher making his first start for the high school baseball team since the accident. using a prosthetic knee pitched four and a half innings, allowed one run and his fastball was clocked at 80 miles an hour. incredible for a normal high school kid, let alone for somebody with a disability like nate's. his coach saying his fierce competitiveness is why nate is alive today. >> yeah, but losing 80% of your blood and he's still -- throwing a ball like that? >> they even said that he's a medical miracle. it's any wonder this kid was able to live. >> that is so cool. thank you for sharing that. appreciate it. police say a suspect in a burglary had no problem breaking into a drugstore, but it was his attempt at an escape that really needed some work. and mit is a college known

church as 11-year-old nadia bloom so he set out by himself to look for her yesterday. after hours in an alligator-filled swamp, he found her bare foot and dehydrated but okay. on cnn last hour he talked about being interviewed by police and the people who doubted his intentions. >> there are those who did believe. there are those who spent probably a lot more time on their knees than i do, but there are a lot of them who don't. but they also have a job to do. they have a responsibility to the community to make sure that there was no foul play. and so i understood that. i understood it completely. and certainly most of the winter springs police department that i met were top-notch professionals that i would be very glad -- i was very glad to be on the team with them. >> king called 911 and then wrapped toilet paper around a tree to mark their spot for police. detectives also used his cell phone signal to find them. president obama says this week's nuclear summit made real progress toward improving the

in the haleigh cummings case. this is not far from where she was last seen more than a year ago. of the sheriff's office would not say what led to the search but they have let the family going on and were questioning mist m misty cross lynn. croslin may have shed light on who is responsible for the disappearance and someone else may have been implicated. croslin has said she woke up to find haleigh missing and the back door propped up. president obama willin veil his vision for the nation's space program tomorrow. documents from a white house official show that the administration plans to increase nasa's budget by $6 billion over the next five years. the president is also cancelling the constellation program that would send more astronauts to the moon. neil armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, was among

several former astronauts who wrote a letter to the president calling the plan devastating. so how's your wednesday weather looking today? for some of you it might be a little soggy. let's check in with meteorologist bob van dillen. >> good morning, natasha. specifically northern california now and the oregon coastline too, there's an upper level low. you can see it on the satellite picture right here, it's not very strong at all but you can see the clouds rotating around that low pressure region. you get to another part of california and that's where the rain is heaviest. that edges up the coast and pulls away overnight as the low slips off towards the west and down to the south. basically today is where you'll get the rain coming out there. by tomorrow not as much in the way of rainfall. you get over towards the east. look at this cold front that jacks down from the northern part of minnesota stretching all the way down into texas. the rain has been heavy at times but so far it has not been that cold. you can see temperatures 59 in sioux falls, 63 around des moines. minneapolis 56 degrees. i want to show you the tower cam coming out of this region

because so far things have been dry. the clouds are coming in. you can see more sunshine this morning. temperatures into the mid to upper 60s. that's ahead of the cold front. but later this afternoon, thunderstorms headed in that direction. so minneapolis, st. paul, be prepared. that's your tower cam coming out of minneapolis right now, looking very nice. so where's the heaviest rain? so far across western texas. you pull away from there, more rain around northern kansas and into nebraska. you can see the showers coming on through. it's edging into omaha and getting into lincoln shortly. then dry out for the west part of the state. right around minneapolis it's dry now, you just saw the tower cam. here is where the rain is located, just off to your west and it's moving in your direction. it's not heavy at all but will pick up in intensity. a little daytime heating, watch for that to activate the cold front and some showers and thunderstorms today. main threat, gusty winds, that's about it. not a severe weather outbreak day i don't think. that's good. more on that in just a little bit. you want to see something cool real quick? we were talking about air traffic delays. look at atlanta. this is always a great sign.

busiest airport in the world. when you see clear skies in atlanta, you know traveling can't be that bad. >> and how's the pollen, by the way? >> that's bad. >> yeah, tell me about it. okay, let's check in the new york stock exchange. what's the latest going on here? the dow held above 11,000 yesterday and today it looks like another rally is in store. felicia taylor is in new york with details on this. hey, felicia. >> reporter: yeah, things are looking great. earnings are the name of the game today and this week along with an upbeat retail sales report. corporate heavyweights intel and jpmorgan chase two companies to report first quarter results and they are setting the bar quite high. jpmorgan made more than $3 billion last quarter thanks to strength in its investment banking unit. the bank is still battling losses on consumer loans, but in a sign of confidence, it now plans to hire about 9,000 workers. intel's earnings also topped estimates. the chip giant made nearly $2.5 million thanks to high selling prices but also rising demand.

getting his real ring. everybody got quite a laugh out of that. after four years, the streak is over. a young nba fan hanging up his team's favorite jersey for 1,460 days in a row, the 12-year-old boy wore a detroit pistons jersey, but decided, wore it enough. he wanted the streak to end on an even number, so he ended it on tuesday. over the course of the streak, the young man says he wore at least nine different jerseys. there is a picture of him and his brother. his brother, also, by the way, a similar streak a few years ago. a family affair type of thing. >> maybe the -- several different jerseys is the deal with his parents. >> good thing, right? >> yeah. classmates too. thanks. five suspected somali pirates suspected of firing on a navy ship could be brought to the u.s. for trifle. is u.s. never tried a suspected somali pirate before. they have been tried by kenya but they can't keep up with the backlog of cases.

another suspect arrested for an attack on a u.s. cargo ship is awaiting trial in new york. a former member of the clinton administration will head a special investigation into that west virginia mine disaster. he was in charge of the u.s. mine safety and health administration. west virginia's governor asked him to lead an independent investigation into what caused last week's explosion that killed 29 miners. he's expected to focus on how to pl prevent such disasters in the future. not every singer sounded ready to take on the king's throne on "american idol." not at all.
