good morning bright and early. if you're up earlier than normal i bet it's because of your taxes. i'm robin meade. morning, sunshine. it looks like police brought h haleigh cummings' former stepmom to the river. authorities are questioning a relative in the case for the third time. there are reports that tiger woods' wife is angry about him returning to golf. who is saying that a divorce is now eminent. hundreds of thousands of people who have lost their jobs and an important safe net could get a lifeline back today.

first it is tax day today. maybe you're holding your nose finishing up your taxes. some americans are getting ready to protest but get this, taxes are lower this year. taxes for middle class families anyway are basically as low as they've been in 50 years. still, in a new cnn poll, most of you say feel like your tax dollars are being wasted. here's where the money goes. mostly to defense, social security and health care, 14% is for safety net programs, that's unemployment and help for lower income families. there's money for vets and interest on the debt. that leaves 13% for everything else including education, protecting the environment, scientific research, infrastructure and food and drug safety. >> we don't want any more bailouts, no more stimulus bills. we are taxed enough already. so we're out here fighting for everybody else to take our message and your message to washington, d.c. >> in a few hours, tea party

activists outraged about tax spending are said to rally across the united states. expect a big announcement about the movement's political goals this year. that story is coming up in about 15 minutes. it appears that authorities brought haleigh cummings' former stepmom in handcuffs to a river they've been searching for two days now. mis misty croslyn has been in custody on unrelated drugs charges. she denies any role in haleigh's disappearance. florida authorities flew to tennessee to question her cousin, overstreet for the third time. he was in the area when haleigh was reported missing and here's what he had to say. >> i can't imagine what they're going through. i didn't do it. >> you didn't do it? >> no. >> do you know who did? >> if i knew who did, i would call the police and tell the

cops who did it. >> the putnam county sheriff's office is not commenting on any possible developments. they have not named any suspects in the 5-year-old's disappearance. croslin who was briefly married to haleigh's father, has said that she woke up at 3:00 a.m. that night to find haleigh missing and the back door propped open. authorities say it's unlikely that a stranger took her. a group of veteran astronauts is upset about president obama's new plan to overhaul nasa. now the president will unveil it today, while trying to reassure nasa workers. he's expected to emphasize job creation and private missions, but it also cancels a manned space flight program. neil armstrong and others say that would make the united states second or even third rate in space programs. tiger woods may have lost more than just a golf tournament at the masters. ray is in now for rafer with a report that tiger's marriage could be coming to an end. hi there, rafer. >> good morning to you, robin.

"people" magazine reporting that tiger's decision to play in the masters may have been the final straw for elin a cording to the magazine a friend says elin is furious over tiger's return to golf and although she has yet to take any legal action, another friend told "people" magazine she wouldn't be surprised if nordegren files for divorce soon. of course, elin was a no show at augusta. in the article, one friend was quoted as saying she wouldn't have gone near the masters under any condition. robin it doesn't end there. wait until you hear elin's reaction to tiger's controversial nike ad. >> that's interesting that point, thank you. people are still digging in the rubble with their hands for any survivors, after yesterday's big quake in china. chinese tv reports more than 1,000 people have been pulled from collapsed buildings. that's after a 6.9 magnitude quake hit near the tibet border. more than 600 people have been killed. thousands have been hurt. hospitals are overwhelmed, and

>> there's no criminal charges pursued here but keep in mind these players do have moral clauses in their contract and that's the big question, did roethlisberger here violate that morals clause? these two met on monday and roethlisberger called the meeting very productive and roger goodell agrees a peering at a steelers function last night. the commissioner thinks roethlisberger understands how important the personal conduct policy is to the nfl. goodell adding the league will continue to go over the information available and will make a decision on roethlisberger sometime in the near future. again, the two men on tuesday a day after it was announced that charges would not be filed against roethlisberger in the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old college student. roethlisberger faces a civil suit that alleges he sexually assaulted a different woman in nevada. how about a big shout out to pro golfer ernie els. according to "the palm beach post" els was relaxing poolside, he noticed a group of disabled iraqi veterans getting off a fishing boat.

>> it's going to affect somebody, robin, because votes are going away from wherever they're coming from. the answer to your question depends on who you ask. representative michele bachmann saying the tea party and the gop are merging together. >> it's really merging into one single solitary unit. a number of tea party groups from around the country are coming together, unifying under the umbrella of economic fiscal conservativeism, because americans quite simply feel like they're taxed enough already. >> all right not everyone agrees with that. the chairman of the tea party express3 tour says "i got more knife wounds in my back from republican operatives than democrats could ever do," and adds the democrats stand there and tell me they hate me and tell me that they hate america. these republicans smile at me, shake my hand and then stab me in the back." so it looks like we have opinions on both sides. >> the activists are upset about what they call excessive

it looks like police took haleigh cummings' former stepmom to a river they were searching. misty croslin was babysitting when she disappeared more than a year ago. foreclosure filings have spiked this year. we have seen more than 930,000 for just the first three months of 2010. that is 16% more than the same time period last year. the numbers are from a foreclosure marketing firm. nevada has the most foreclosure filings and vermont has the fewest. the house has passed a bill that will make it illegal to spoof your caller i.d.

special interests whose jobs and pensions are plenty secure, thank you very much, that this bill would lead to more bailouts. >> now, back in october the treasury secretary voiced some of the same concerns that republicans have. they want failing firms of any size to go through bankruptcy court. new this morning, just in, moscow is saying that it is going to suspend adoptions of russian kids by united states parents until new rules can get hashed out. a state department team is reportedly heading to moscow next week to work out an arrangement that would allow adoptions to continue. for american families to adopt russian kids. it's because of a controversy surrounding a tennessee family who put an adopted 7-year-old boy back on a plane back to moscow saying that he was violent. tiger woods' wife, elin, was apparently not happy about him returning to golf so soon.

involved in two alleged sexual assaults in the past eight months. roger goodell was like, that's it. we need to bring this guy in to talk. he thinks roethlisberger understands how important the personal conduct ipolicy is to the nfl. these guys do have moral clauses in their contract. goodell adding that the league will go over the information available and will make a decision on roethlisberger some time in the near future. now, again, the two met on tuesday, a day after it was announced that charges would not be filed against roethlisberger in the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old college student. roethlisberger, however, still faces a civil suit that alleges he sexually assaulted a different woman in nevada and roethlisberger denies the accusati accusations. just say no to tobacco. they want products like dip and chewing tobacco banned during games. you may have noticed it is already banned in the minor

leagues. one major league executive says banning it is in the big leagues is a goal and it will be discussed in future negotiations with the players union. you have to love this story, big slout out to ernie els. according to "palm beach post" he was relaxing poolside when he noticed disabled american veterans getting off a fishing boat. they had recently served in iraq and els invited the men over and bought them several beers. one of the men called the encounter the highlight of his vacation. this doesn't surprise me with erniels because he is known for reaching out to fans and being a good guy. the white house is proposing to kick college teams out of post-season play if they don't measure up academically. kind of a sports related story. in building up america, gary tuchman looks at how that plan could change college hoops. >> reporter: the u.s. secretary of education has issued a first

of its kind challenge to collegiate athletic teams. >> i will continue to challenge the status. >> reporter: ernie duncan says if a college fails to graduate 40% of its athletes based on its teams from past years the current team should be banned from post-season tournaments. >> if universities can't graduate two out of five of their athletes how serious are they about their core mission? >> reporter: the ncaa will have to approve it, but 12 of the 65 teams in this year's ncaa basketball tournament would have been under that 45% level and therefore not allowed to play in the tournament. but then there are schools like butler university. >> we will head inside and we had madeline albright come. >> reporter: the small indianapolis campus was the proud home of a team that made it all the way to the ncaa championship team before losing to duke and like duke has a very high graduation rate. >> it confirms for me that it is possible to achieve athletic

parents and the school sent a letter home with the other kids. the real-life story of an 18-year-old frujative wanted for stealing cars, boats and even planes may be coming to a theater near you. authorities cannot find him, but 20th century fox just bought the rights to his story. he has stolen four planes and flown them without a license and his mom says, that's impossible. >> if he did everything they said he did he would have to be 16 years old. nobody has that many hours in a day to do everything they say he did. >> well, the teen is also known as the bare foot burglar for not wearing shoes during a string of alleged break -ins. he has thousands of fan s and supporters on facebook. one told him to run like the wind. kind of like this folk hero to some people. if you'd like to take lunch

new this morning, a volcanic eruption in iceland is causing a lot of canceled flights today. aviation officials closed the air space over the uk for six hours because of volcanic ash. other airports in europe are warning of possible cancilations. that volcano erupted yesterday for the second time in less than a month. tea party activists are using this tax day, april 15th, by the way, to spread their message across the country today. they're going to push for fiscal responsibility and reducing the size of the government at a number of rallies. now, correspondent richard lui is joining us. i mean, it's a good day to push for fiscal responsibility when you feel like you're paying in. >> a lot of us paying on this tax day. folks are pretty upset on the tea party express and what they want to do, they want to try to make a change. the question is, who might it hurt? well, it depends on who you ask. representative michele bachmann saying, hey, you know, the tea

party movement and the gop are getting closer and combining. >> it's really merging into one single solitary unit. a number of tea party groups from around the country are coming together unifying under the umbrella of economic fiscal conservativism because americans, quite simply, feel like they're taxed enough already. >> well, the chairman of the tea party express does not agree with michele bachmann. he is quoting saying "i got more knife wounds in my back from republican operatives than democrats could ever do." going on to say the democrats stand there and tell me they hate me and tell me that they hate america. these americans smile at me, shake my hand and then stab me in the back." strong words there. >> i guess so. >> some activists are upset about government spending. let's talk about a new spending report that we have. >> let's dig into that, robin. the congressional pig book comes out every year and shows you

where the government is spending your tax dollar. here are a few highlights for you. first off about $5 million for wood utilization research and 11 timber states requested and then democratic vet clark from new york she requested $400,000 for safety improvements at the brooklyn botanic garden. thorns, i guess perhaps in the roses. i don't know. >> i guess when it goes to your own area you're like, yeah, yeah, we need that and when you go to someone else's area, you're like, that's pork. elvis week was cruel to two "american idol" contestants. katie got the boot for her cover of "baby, what do you want me to do." casey, erin and andrew got pulled to center stage to see who else was going home. >> it's tough even for us on a night like tonight to have to eliminate two people. andrew, it's the end of the road. i'm sorry. >> yeah, andrew's version of

of elin saying tiger was going to take more time off and another saying elin was so angry "i wouldn't be surprised if she files for divorce some time soon." hln has reached out to elin's reps for comment on that. the article goes on to say that elin was also furious about the nike commercial featuring a voiceover by tiger's late father. one friend "elin was violently angry over this commercial and thought it was a cheesy thing to do." it's been called a first for the national football league talking about the fact that they're going broadway. yaur, the league is consulting on a new play of the life and times of vince lombardi. entitled "lombardi." the production opens in october at the circle and square theater and its producer thomas kail. should be pretty good. know what that is, robin?

third time. but first maybe what you're working on right now, you have some hours and i do mean hours to finish up your taxes. while you may be holding your nose getting that done, some americans are getting ready to protest. the good news for many is that taxes are actually lower this year and taxes for middle class families are basically as low as they have been in 50 years. still in, a new cnn poll, most of your fellow viewers say that they feel their tax dollars are being wasted. here is where the money goes. mostly to defense, social security and health care. 14% is for safety net programs like unemployment and help for low income families. there's interest on the debt and money for vets. then that leaves 13% for everything else from education, protecting the environment, scientific research, infrastructure, food and drug safety. >> we don't want any more bailouts, no more stimulus bills, we are taxed enough already. so we're out here fighting for

everybody else to take our message and your message to washington, d.c. >> all right. we have live pictures of some of those folks right now getting ready in washington, d.c. tea party activists are expected to hold rallies across the united states today. this hour in d.c. a tea party group is naming the candidates that they are endorsing for elections in november. in about 30 minutes you're going to hear how the tea party movement may change another political party. it appears that authorities brought haleigh cummings former step mom in handcuffs to the river that they have been searching for two days. misty croslin was baby-sitting when haleigh disappeared. croslin has been in custody on unrelated drug charges. she denies any role in the 5-year-old's disappearance. meanwhile florida authorities flew to tennessee to question croslin's cousin, named joe overstreet, for the third time. he was in the area when haleigh was reported missing.

here's what he has to say. >> i can't imagine what they're going through. i didn't do it. >> you didn't do it? >> no. >> do you know who did? >> if i knew who did, i would straight call the police and tell the cops who did it. >> authorities have not named suspects in the 5-year-old's disappearance. croslin, who was briefly married to haleigh's father, has said that she woke up at 3:00 a.m. that night to find haleigh missing and the back door propped open, but authorities say it is unlikely that a stranger took the little girl. nancy grace is following developments very closely on this story. catch her tonight at 8:00 p.m. eastern right here on hln. tiger woods lost more than just a golf tournament perhaps at the masters. ray is here with a report that tiger's marriage could be coming to an end. good morning. >> hey, good morning to you, robin. a lot of people wondering what elin thinks about all this. "people" magazine reporting that tiger's decision to play in the masters may have been the final straw for elin and now she is looking to divorce tiger.

hln has reached out to elin's reps for comment and we will bring it to you if we hear back. according to the magazine, a friend says elin is furious over tiger's return to golf. although she has yet to take any legal action, another friend told "people" magazine they wouldn't be surprised if nordgren files for divorce soon. of course elin was a no-show in augusta. one friend was quoted as saying she wouldn't have gone near the masters under any condition, end quote. robin, it doesn't end there. coming up in just a bit you'll hear elin's reaction to tiger's controversial nike ad. we'll have that for you in just a bit. >> more than just a reaction like the rest of us had had, like is it brilliant or is it weird. new this morning, moscow is suspending adoptions of russian kids to the united states until new rules get hashed out. a state department team is heading to moscow next week trying to work out an arrangement that would allow adoptions to continue. but it all surrounds a

controversy from a tennessee family who put a 7-year-old boy on a plane by himself back to moscow saying that he was violent. they say nice guys finish last but when it comes to dating, is that the story? well, some businesses are specializing in teaching men to be bad boys. one dating coach says he tells guys to stop being so available or flexible. another advises them to stop wasting money on expensive dates. and i have a hard time believing, this but a 2008 study supposedly found that women prefer men who are thrill-seeking, okay, deceitful, give me a break, and narcissistic. enough about me. what do you like best about me? >> thrill-seeking, huh? i love that. >> i always tell young women looking for mr. right, you go for the humor. you go for the humor. >> i think so. how about a green date. perfect song for that one.

nebraska. now through iowa. again, that is also fading apart but the heavy downpours are are still out there for the morning. picks up in intensity this afternoon. the heaviest rain by far will be in western and central texas this afternoon. it's another weak frontal boundary but the energy coming out of mexico generating some decent rain right around san antonio and that goes all the way up to lubbock. that's going to fill in towards the east later today. one to one and a half inches of rain there. how about the east coast. the white house looking pretty good. temperatures into the mid-70s. you look at the trucks on the white house lawn and it looks to me like they're pumping the septic tank. >> i'm sure even that has to be done. it is a house. >> there you go. more in a bit. new this morning, toyota is taking a drastic step to answer safety questions about a lexus suv. plus a town is coming to grips with the death of a teenager who committed suicide after she was bullied. there was a lot of anger at a meeting last night.

cnn.com/robin. if you're stressing out and feel like you can't get them done today, just file for an extension. you can do it online. your peace of mind is important too. toyota has told dealers to stop selling, we already knew that, to stop selling the luxury suvs for a while so they're also temporarily going to stop making them. now, toyota also says for everybody who's driving some kind of toyota or lexus suv, maybe you heard the story last week and got nervous. toyota wants to reassure everyone it is safety testing all of its suvs. this is after the headline that "consumer reports" believes a top of the line lexus, a gx 460, which is a $60,000 vehicle, "consumer reports" says it's too dangerous to drive it because it might roll over on turns. toyota says they'll safety test everything. moving can be a big headache

for the first time in decades, there has been a big drop in the number of women dying each year from complications of pregnancy and childbirth. now, researchers say that it may be due to lower pregnancy rates or better access to health care. but advocates for women's health

say that there is still a dire need for more international aid for maternal health care. a group of veteran astronauts is upset about president obama's new plan to overhaul nasa. now, the president will unveil it today, while trying to reassure nasa workers. he's expected to emphasize job creation and private missions, but it also cancels a manned space flight program. well, neil armstrong and others say that that would make the united states second or even third rate when it comes to space exploration. the nfl's top guy says that he's going to decide soon on whether to punish ben roethlisberger for his off-field actions. ray is in for rafer with more on that. >> the big question here, robin, keep in mind all nfl player, it doesn't matter if you're a star quarterback or third-string kickers, they all have morality clauses in their contracts and that's the question here. did roethlisberger violate that clause. well, nfl commissioner roger goodell says he thinks roethlisberger understands how important the personal conduct

policy is to the nfl. goodell adding that the league will continue to go over the information available and will make a decision on roethlisberger sometime in the near future. you may recall the two met on tuesday, a day after it was announced that charges would not be filed against roethlisberger in the alleged sexual assault of a 20-year-old college student. roethlisberger, however, still faces a civil suit that alleges he sexually assaulted a different woman in nevada. roethlisberger, by the way, denies the accusations. well, the message is plain and simple. just say no to smokeless tobacco. that is the message from congress to major league baseball and its players. they want products like dip and chewing tobacco banned during games. it's already band in the minor leagues. one executive says banning it in the big leagues is a reachable goal and it will be discussed in future negotiations with the players union. finally, we have got to get a huge shoutout to pro golfer ernie els. els was relaxing poolside this week when he noticed some

disabled american veterans getting off a fishing boat. they had just recently served in iraq. reportedly he invited them over, bought them several rounds of beers and spent about an hour talking with them. one of the men called the encounter the highlight of his vacation. here's this big-time golfer, won a few majors, now a simple guy. hey, come on over, let's have some beers and talk. love what you're doing for us. >> that's great. a new document released in the rod blagojevich corruption case paints a sordid picture of his time as governor of illinois. it gives details on extortion and kickback allegations dating back to his 2002 election. it also accuses him of giving tens of thousands of dollars to his wife after he's being investigated. he maintains that he's innocent and says there's nothing new in that document. check this out, it's electric with three wheels. this is the latest version of the car.

milwaukee, wisconsin. remember, we had the meteor showers going on but here's what it looked like last night. look at this fire ball whizzing through the sky. it looks like the moon is actually falling. watch it blow up. boom, just a huge flash. >> i would have been so afraid if i saw that. >> you and i both would have changed clothing. look at this. that's from last night overnight. just amazing footage. i had to share it with you. it's a tower cam from milwaukee of that fire ball meteor going right on through the atmosphere. so what about the rest of the region? there's a cold front over the area right now. you can see it stretching through minneapolis, all the way back just north of denver. ahead of that it's basically clear until you see the winds coming out of the east for atlanta. you can see the haze is out here. east wind, low clouds. otherwise the bona fide rain locked up across the great lakes and now through wisconsin and minneapolis too. that rain stretches way on down into areas like minneapolis where you can see more thunderstorms develop. then you get down to the south and the rain picks up a little bit. nebraska into iowa, heavier

downpours but the heaviest rain we'll find is around texas. what about the best weather that we are going to find? i think today i'm going for las vegas, nevada. nevada is going to see great weather the next couple of days. 76 degrees. mostly sunny in vegas, baby. so, nevada, enjoy it. it's going to be fantastic. best weather in the country, las vegas, 76 and sunny. >> nice and cool for them actually. >> indeed, yeah. >> thank you. wall street is coming off a pretty good rally. the dow closed above 11,000 yesterday. that's the third day in a row. felicia taylor is at the new york stock exchange with a look at what we can expect today. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, robin. stocks are a little bit lower in the first few minutes of trading today. that's partly because we've seen a weaker labor report. new jobless claims unexpectedly jumped to 484,000 last week. that is a rise of 24,000 from the week before. government analysts say it's not due to an increase in layoffs. instead they're blaming a lag in claims related to easter and

cesar chavez day. that was a labor leader, a mexican labor leader holiday that is celebrated mostly in western states. for the second day in a row corporate earnings are strong. u.p.s. first quarter profit jumped more than 30%. shipping volume grew for the first time in two years. u.p.s. is also a good indicator of the whole economy because it carries packages literally for every industry and shares are up 5.75%. metoothe brakseth fo police are trying to figure out how a third grader got 60 bags of heroin that he then started passing out at school. this is in pennsylvania. police say that the kid handed out the bags before a teacher found out what was going on. there is no evidence that any of the other kids ingested the drugs. police contacted the boy's parents and the school sent a
