cloud of ash from a volcano in iceland. it is responsible for the worst disruption in air traffic since 9/11. that is our top story on this sunday. airports in at least 15 countries are closed. thousands of flights are canceled for good reason. so volcanic ash won't cause jet engines to fail. some people in europe are trying to get seats on the euro star train now which goes to and from the uk. but britain-ground seats are sold out until tuesday. people are being told to stay put. >> for people who are here in the uk, whichever nationality they are, i think the advice is stay where you are and don't come into the airport like you just said because clearly nothing is happening here. we can see behind us that the airport is completely closed. it's better for people, more comfortable for them to stay in hotels or with friends or at home. >> you heard him. stay home. the volcano in iceland started erupting march 20th. it got worse last week forcing

local evacuations and eventually affecting europe's airspace. folks all over the world are stranded at dulles, too. they have spent days going back and forth between hotels and terminals, checking on the status of their flights. some say they have seen more than enough of the nation's capital, and they just want to go back home. >> it's a little annoying that you kind of have to hang around the airport or check the internet all the time because otherwise you could just go into d.c. and enjoy yourself. we've become quite familiar with dulles. >> took a taxi to the airport because we can't check online. 80 bucks down and can't go anywhere. >> a lot of people in that position. klm ran a test flight in the netherlands airspace last night. klm's ceo says the air quality was found to be safe. and if the final results hold up, the airline will ask to resume its flights. at volcanic ash prevented president obama from going to a state funeral in poland.

he was scheduled to attend today's ceremonies for polish president lech kaczynski. he died in a plane crash earlier this month, as you know. well, president obama issued a statement that said this. he and first lady michelle obama continue to have polish people in their thoughts and prayers. he called the polish leader a patriot, friend and ally. obama also said the american people will never forget the lives of president ka zczynski d other plane crash victims. a representative in poland will represent the president at the funeral. about 1.5 million people are expected to bid their final good-byes to the late polish leader. they lined the streets this morning as a motorcade carried the body of president kaczynski and his wife. many people cried as soldiers carried the coffins into a church. 96 people were killed when the late president's plane crashed in russia eight days ago. they include the polish first lady and many other key pole sh

leaders. a teenage boy accused of severely beating a middle school girl has been charged as an adult. ratley was beaten so badly she spent about a month in a coma. she recently regained consciousness but suffered brain damage and cannot speak. prosecutors say 15-year-old wayne tracy now faces premeditated attempted murder charges. his attorney says he will plead not guilty. >> you have an honors student, a rational 15-year-old boy who at some point after his brother's death became an irrational 15-year-old boy. and you have to believe, even as a common person, that something -- some switch, something snapped in his head at that particular point, and that's what i'm trying to get to the bottom of. >> the court does have the ability, under the circumstances of this case, because there is no firearm involved, to impose juvenile sanctions or impose all the way up to life in prison. it's a very wide range. >> yesterday a judge said wayne

treacy would have to stale in jail without bond. defense secretary robert gates warned the white house that the u.s. doesn't have a nimble, long-term plan to handle iran's nuclear program. that is according to "the new york times" which reports gates wrote the three-page memo in january. that memo reportedly set off efforts in the pentagon, white house and intelligence agencies to come up with new options. a white house official told the associated press those efforts have been under way for many months. news of secretary robert gates' memo comes as a two-day nuclear conference is under way in iran. iran's president and other officials warned representatives from 60 countries that america's nuclear policy was endangering the world. president obama did not invite iran to his nuclear security summit in washington last week. the u.s. fears iran is using a civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop weapons. but iran is denying this, saying its nuclear work is only for peaceful purposes like power generation. there was a tense standoff when some white supremacists

held a rally in downtown los angeles. about 50 members of the national socialist movement were prote protesting against illegal immigration. it happened yesterday. you see it here. about 500 counterprotesters showed up, and riot police tried to keep them under control. police say they arrested five people who reportedly were throwing things at the rally. >> they are defending free speech. and if they weren't there, as you see from the other side, they're the ones that are rioters, throwing things, came out without a permit. we came out with a permit. the police were doing the job. we respect that. >> to have so many police officers like on a saturday night -- i mean saturday, you know, so many of them, hundreds of millions of dollars were spent. >> well, the white supremacist group held both u.s. flags and swastika banners and shouted a nazi salute. they say they are reacting to immigration reform rallies that support amnesty for some illegal immigrants. police are investigating a shooting at the nation's busiest border crossing. they say customs agents wounded

a man who was trying to get from mexico to the u.s. in a stolen suv. it happened yesterday. he tried to avoid a secondary inspection at the crossing, and he ended up crashing into a concrete barrier. he is recovering in a san diego hospital. his injuries are not life threatening. the car was reported stolen in colorado last month. well, the calendar may say spring, but new hampshire is getting that, a second helping of wintry weather. wet and heavy snow piled up overnight covering cars. not really what people expected after a warm start to april. >> i was expecting it to be about 50. a little bit springy. a little bit more springy than this. >> tough this morning. they were plowing snow this morning, believe it or not, around 3:00. >> i'd rather be out shopping in the snow than in the rain. >> she's positive. snow started falling in northern new hampshire on friday and continued into saturday with some areas getting more than a half foot of snow. there is no doubt that pictures are pretty spectacular,

that volcanic ash over europe is even affecting some runners in the boston marathon. some of them won't be able to make it on time because they can't get to the u.s. by tomorrow. so the marathon organizers say they will just let them compete next year. >> i guess on a high side, it could be 500, 600 runners. >> one of them has a wife who's trying to get here to run in the race also. but she hasn't been able to get out of london yet. >> well, the marathon begins tomorrow morning. organizers say those who arrive last minute can still pick up their bibs before the race. medical marijuana users are lighting up at an international cannabis and hemp expo in california. vendors are selling everything from bongs, vaporizers, hash brownies and other marijuana products. the event's organizer says it

took years of negotiations to get permission to hold this expo. there's been a recent push to legalize marijuana in the state of california. this november voters will consider a ballot measure on whether to legalize and tax pot. a rare and historic performance last night in major league baseball. a pitcher threw a no-hitter, in case you missed it, jeff fischel is here. jeff, he sure made it look easy. >> ubaldo jimenez, so good and overpowering last night. he's the hardest throwing pitcher in all of baseball. the pitch put his name in the record books. it seems in every no-hitter there's that one play where a teammate makes an amazing play to save the no-no. watch dexter fowler, the amazing catch, stealing a hit from the braves' troy glas. watch jimenez's reaction. wow. jimenez was throwing so hard, one brave player said it was the most dominant pitching performance he had ever seen. 4-0. it's the first no-hitter in

like oh, my gosh. i want to fly home. what's happening? what's going on? >> i'm kind of homesick now. i want to go home soon. >> those are german exchange students who have been in the u.s. for a month now. they were supposed to fly home friday morning, but ash from that volcanic eruption in iceland left them stranded in d.c. some of them were traveling from ohio. new host families had to pick them up after their connecting flights through dulles was canceled. stay with "hln" as we cover this travel fiasco. the youngest daughter of former president lyndon johnson is being treated at the mayo clinic. doctors suspect that lucy baynes johnson has a rare autoimmune disorder that affects the nervous system. initially johnson was admitted to a hospital in austin, texas, after experiencing extreme weakness in her arms and legs. doctors suspect guillain-barre

syndrome. it can also cause paralysis. doctors say most patients recover completely from the condition. an update on the story of a man who had his daughter baptized despite the fact that his ex-wife was raising her to be jewish. well, a cook county judge ruled that joseph reyes can take his 3-year-old daughter to mass at a roman catholic church when she is visiting with him. now, it also grants him visitation every christmas and easter. his ex-wife who has custody of the young girl will have her for jewish holidays including yom kippur. but reyes isn't out of legal trouble just yet. he may still face a contempt of court charge for violating an earlier court order barring him from exposing his daughter to non-religious teachings. construction car crews are pulling cars out of a huge sinkhole. the hole opened up in richmond, california, on thursday. it is huge, around 60 by 40 feet wide, 20 feet deep. this woman believes her car is still in it.

>> i know it's buried under some dirt. but as i continue to watch them keep digging and digging and not reaching it, it's kind of hard to figure out where it could be. i've even had the police check to make sure that it actually didn't get towed. so there's no -- there is no report on it. so it's definitely down there somewhere. >> well, workers have started building a road around the sinkhole because it cut off about 100 homes. it is still not clear what caused the sinkhole. education contributor steve perry who has done a lot in his own right is now looking at more ways to transform learning in america. steve found an alternative school program that one state's governor says has cut the dropout rate by 30%. >> here in new hampshire to take a look at how one community is solving one of america's most challenging issues, dropouts. so as you went through school, did you miss a lot of school? >> when i started high school, yes, i did. >> what's a lock to you? >> i was tardy every day or was suspended every other time i went into school.

have a rumble of thunder or a bit of flash flooding on parts of i-35, maybe i-30 heading towards memphis. the reason why we're seeing that precipitation is actually simple. we have an area of low pressure moving through the lone star state. from the red river valley to the louisiana coastline, expect scattered showers. fairly dry in the southeast. the rain and combination of some snowfall up in parts of new england will stick around through a good part of the midday hours, the afternoon. by evening it should fizzle out. and out west, fairly dry in most spots. maybe snowfall in high spots of the central rockies. california looks good. southern california, chance of rain showers. central california, relatively dry. in terms of temperatures, 69 degrees in kansas city. 75 in atlanta. 77 in tampa. 75 in miami. 50s and 60s in boston to new york. 69d in denver. 86 in las vegas. 68 in san francisco. los angeles, 73 degrees for a high temperature. that's a look at today's forecast. i'm reynolds wolf for "hln." there is no doubt that pictures are pretty spectacular, but the effects of this volcanic eruption are reaching around the

two years. try to realize the catastrophe if it lasted that long now. >> our thanks to gary tuchman. britain and germany have extended cancellations until later today. some people in europe are trying to get seats on the euro star train now which goes to and from the uk, but britain-bound seats are sold out until tuesday. a developing story. what is the situation with the ash cloud from the volcano in iceland? reynolds wolf joins us with a graphic picture to help us explain. >> the big reason why is the eruption, but it's the ummer-level winds that have not been cooperating with points of europe. anyone trying to travel in that part of the world will have a difficult time. take a look at this shot. this is a look at infrared satellite imagery, and you'll notice, you see a lot of movement going from iceland with this ash cloud back towards the uk and parts of europe. the reason why we're seeing that general direction is actually pretty simple. we've got strong, upper-level winds carrying everything right towards densely populated areas, obviously airports where many,

many flights are going to be canceled, possibly more in the coming days. however, as we look at it next week, we do see a bit of improvement and the reason why is quite simple. we anticipate an area of high pressure that's going to move into the region, and as i would moves over parts of central and north europe, it's going to change the steering winds. it's going to push those winds a bit farther to the north. of course it's still going to affect plenty of people in parts of the former soviet union. however, for much of europe, they'll get a break. it's not better for anyone but it will be better for some. we'll take any improvement we possibly can. that is the latest we have on this situation. for more, stay tuned here on hln. that volcanic ash prevented president obama from going to a state funeral in poland. he was scheduled to attend today's ceremonies for polish president lech ka sin i can. he died in a plane crash earlier this month as you know. president obama issued a statement.

an american ambassador in poland will represent the u.s. at the funeral. many other world leaders also canceled their trips. about 1.5 million people are expected to bid their final good-byes to the late polish leader. they lined the streets this morning as a motorcade carried the bodies of president kaczynski and his wife. many people cried as soldiers carried the coffins into a church. 96 people were killed when the late president's plane crashed in russia eight days ago. they include the polish first lady and many other key polish leaders. baseball fans got a special treat last night. for one player, it was a night he'll never forget. jeff fischel joins me on this history-making night. a great night. >> it was. every little league pitcher, it's the dream, the one game you are unhittable.

news of secretary robert gates' memo comes as a two-day nuclear conference is under way in iran. iran's president and other officials warned representatives from 60 countries that america's nuclear policy was endangering the world. president obama did not invite iran to his nuclear security summit in washington last week. the u.s. fears iran is using a civilian nuclear program as a cover to develop weapons. but iran is denying this, saying its nuclear work is only for peaceful purposes like power generation. there was a tense standoff when some white supremacists held a rally in downtown los angeles. about 50 members of the national socialist movement were protesting against illegal immigration. it happened yesterday. you see it here. about 500 counterprotesters showed up, and riot police tried to keep them under control. police say they arrested five people who reportedly were throwing things at the rally. >> they are defending free speech. if they weren't there, as you can see from the other side, they're the ones that are rioters, throwing things, came out without a permit. we came out with a permit. the police are doing their job.

how does it look where you are? meteorologist reynolds wolf is here to tell us. >> in parts of the northeast, you were talking about snowfall, but in texas the story is all rain. fairly heavy precipitation, some locations but we're not expecting anything in terms of severe weather just yet. later this afternoon maybe a rumble of thunder, flashflooding on parts of i-35, maybe i-30 along memphis. the reason we're seeing that precipitation is actually quite simple. we have an area of low pressure moving through parts of the lone star state, so the red river valley, back to the louisiana coastline, expect scattered showers. fairly dry for you in portions of the southeast. the rain and the combination of some snowfall up in parts of new england will stick around through a good part of the midday hours, the afternoon. by evening, it should fizzle out. out west, fairly dry in most spots. maybe some snowfall in high spots of the central rockies. california looks pretty good. southern california a chance of some rain showers. central california, relatively dry. in terms of temperatures, 69 degrees in kansas city. 75 in atlanta. 77 in tampa. 75 in miami. 50s and 60s in boston to new

hard to manuel the economic catastrophe if it lasted that long now. >> our thanks to gary tuchman. britain and germany have extended cancellations until later today. some people in europe are trying to get seats on the euro star train now which goes to and from the u.k. but britain-bound seats are sold out until tuesday. a developing story. what is the situation with the ash cloud from the volcano in iceland? reynolds wolf joins us with a graphic picture to help us explain what a mess this is causing and why. >> the big reason why is the eruption, but it's the upper level winds that have not been cooperating with points of europe. anyone trying to travel in that part of the world will have a difficult time. take a look at this shot. this is a look at infrared satellite imagery, and you'll notice, you see a lot of movement going from iceland with this ash cloud back towards the u.k. and parts of europe. the reason why we're seeing that general direction is actually pretty simple. we've got strong, upper-level winds carrying everything right towards densely populated areas, obviously airports where many, many flights are going to be canceled, possibly more in the

coming days. however, as we look at it next week, we do see a bit of improvement and the reason why is quite simple. we anticipate an area of high pressure that's going to move into the region, and as i would moves over parts of central and north europe, it's going to change the steering winds. it's going to push those winds a bit farther to the north. of course it's still going to affect plenty of people in parts of the former soviet union. however, for much of europe, they'll get a break. it's not great for everyone but it will be better for some and right now we'll take any improvement we possibly can. that is the latest we have on this situation. for more, stay tuned here on hln. that volcanic ash prevented president obama from going to a state funeral in poland. he was scheduled to attend today's ceremonies for polish lech kaczynski. he died earlier in a plane crash earlier this month as you know. president obama issued a statement that said this.
