there's 11 to 15 people still missing. earlier this morning, they did spot a life raft off the rig that had some of the crew members on it. why don't you show up in court tomorrow and explain to everybody. explain to the whole world why you don't want all those tapes that you made played in court. i'll be in court tomorrow. i hope you're man enough to be there tomorrow, too. when i was sit on the shark's back, i was going, okay, this is very serious business. you better not make too many mistakes. happy hump day to you on this wednesday. we're halfway through the workweek. i'm christi paul. we have something just in to hln. the nfl has decided to suspend pittsburgh steelers quarterback
12:01 pm
ben roethlisberger. espn reporting this hour the star will be forced to sit out at least four games, possibly as many as six. mike galanos, anchor of "prime news" is here to fill us in on what's happening here. >> this was expected. we just didn't know what the time frame would be. >> exactly. i predicted on my show "prime news" it was going to be four games and with conditions be cut down to two. they've bumped it up a couple of games. so four to six games. usually with conditions they'll monitor ben roethlisberger's behavior. he may have to go to counseling. but four to six games. the nfl is very serious about this. christi, people wonder, ben roethlisberger, not convicted in a court of law. the charges were dropped. here's a letter that roger goodell, the commissioner, wrote to pacman jones. he had multiple brushes with the law, ended up being suspended for a year. your conduct has brought embarrassment and ridicule upon yourself, your club n the nfl and has damaged the reputation of players throughout the
12:02 pm
league. that's pacman jones. but that applies to ben roethlisberger. we're talking about a pattern of behavior with roethlisberger. facing a civil suit in lake tahoe. also the charges ultimately dropped. there's another woman that was claiming that he was sexually harassing to her at his home in georgia. so a lot of these thing comes to play. and roger goodell is the long arm of the law. and there's a moral police and a moral code. >> pacman jones got a year. is four to six games enough? >> i think it is for ben roethlisberger. that's a quarter of a season. ben roethlisberger is not just an average quarterback. he is good. he is very good. he's led the pittsburgh steelers to two super bowls. so that is a big-time punishment. what happens with the future? the steelers were ready to punish him as well. we know that. if the nfl didn't. >> we're getting news from wpxi there in pittsburgh that an official announcement on this is forthcoming today. so this will officially be coming out, the announcement. but i am wondering when you talk about the steelers, they seem to
12:03 pm
be cracking down. are they ready, do you think, to wash their hands of this whole thing and trade him? >> well, we're hearing differing reports. espn reporting that the steelers are making phone calls about possibly trading him. there are other reports saying teams are calling them. so we're still trying to sort that out. we have not independently confirmed any of that here at hln. but the steelers are not messing around. let's take san antonio holmes for example. they just traded him for a fifth round pick because there were allegations he threw a drink at a woman at an orlando nightclub. so the pittsburgh steelers, the rooney family, they do not mess around. they are about morales and a certain code of conduct. if they have had talks with roethlisberger and there's a parent of behavior here. he had the issue pending in lake tahoe. a civil suit against him. could the rooneys -- have they had enough? i would be surprised if they deal him but there would be teams ready to line up to take him. >> is he still a hot commodity
12:04 pm
despite all of this? >> there are teams that may not operate by the same strict code as the rooneys. certainly you think of teams like the oakland raiders. they've been a second chance for many who have had brushes with the law. the raiders. and again he was not convicted in a court of law. a lot of teams don't believe they have that same pr nightmare that you would if you have had somebody convicted in a court of law. >> is this going to clean him up? do you think this will change him? >> you hope so. you would hope the issue in lake tahoe and all the bad publicity would have cleaned him up then. maybe it didn't. maybe this will. come on. how much more do you need. in the nfl, it's a privilege to play. it's not a right. i applaud commissioner goodell for taking this stand that he wants a moral code of conduct that at times is higher than the court of law. >> mike, appreciate it. former sports reporter mike galanos. appreciate it. wpxi there in pittsburgh is saying an official announcement is forthcoming today.
12:05 pm
as soon as we get that, we'll pass it along to you certainly. another story we've been watching. an oil rig still burning off the louisiana coast in the gulf of mexico. flames have been shooting out of the drilling platform since an explosion last night. the coast guard is searching the gulf for 12 people who are missing. the deep water horizon rig is 52 miles southeast of venice, louisiana. there were 126 people on board at the time this blast occurred. coast guard helicopters airlifted seven critically injured workers ashore. here's video of that. a coast guard spokesman says most of the crew got safely off the rig and into a work boat there. former illinois governor rod blagojevich is calling federal prosecutors, and i'm quoting here, cowards and liars. they filed racketeering and fraud charges against him. blagojevich says they are trying to stop jurors from hearing all the fbi recordings of certain phone calls. he's also taking issue with allegations that a convicted businessman gave his wife thousands of dollars.
12:06 pm
>> it's bad enough that they've lied about me. now they are actually trying to keep all the evidence that proves my innocence from being heard before a jury. worse than that, while they are lying about me ican deal with that. i'm in this business. last week in their proffer of lies, they are now hitting below the belt and attacking my wife. >> the u.s. attorney's office did not comment. blagojevich's trial is expected to start in six weeks. a frantic call for help as a boat sinks in the waters off alaska. hear the dramatic mayday as the crew scrambles to get to a life raft to stay alive. i absolutely agree. all right a nonprofit group is taking what some may call a radical approach to birth control. it pays drug-abusing women, cash, about $300 dollar. sterilized or have a long-term birth control device implanted until they're ready to bear healthy children and care for them properly. barbara harris started project prevention 13 years ago after she and her husband adopted four children from the same drug-abusing mother. harris claims the group has paid more 3,000 women in 39 states and the uk to stop having kids. the program's voluntary, but some civil rights groups accuse her of coercing vulnerable women to sign away their productive rights. so which side of this do you fall on? that's the question we're asking you today, and richelle carey's been taking your comments.
2:41 pm
>> it's a provocative debate. i think that may be the best word. but, yeah, and sensitive as well, christi. in group says that the goal is just to reduce the number of unwanted births of children being born that are addicted to drugs. they want to reduce that number to zero. that's what they say. but paying addicts to have birth control, to be sterilized, is that the way to do it? let's start with mary. mary wants to talk about this. mary has daily, firsthand -- a perspective on this. mary, when we first told you about this, had you hear of doing something like this before? >> caller: no, but i sure have thought of something like that. >> okay. go ahead. >> caller: i think it's a wonderful idea. i adopted three so-called crack babies years ago. they are now ages 14, 16 and 16. they came from two separate families. both mothers went on to have like 12 more babies.
2:42 pm
these children, two of my kids are bipolar, they're add, adhd, we have daily tantrums. one of them has diabetes, two are almost blind. they have heart problems. this all comes from being born to irresponsible mothers who did not take care of themselves during their pregnancies and brought these babies into this world addicted to drugs and alcohol. and i am just trying on a daily basis to keep my family together and to get these kids through high school and do the best i can to be a good parent. >> so are you open to the idea of someone who's in a state of being addicted to drugs, who's maybe young, making poor decisions as it is, volunteering to be sterilized and then maybe ten, 20 years then having to live with that decision that they made at that time? >> caller: well, no, if it's temporary, you know if it's like a divisor something.
2:43 pm
>> okay. >> caller: and then if and when they get their lives together, get back on track and can have healthy children down the line, then they -- you know if it was a reversible sterilization device they could do that. i'm not saying permanently sterilize them. that's a little bit drastic, although i have thought of it myself, you know? >> well, because you're living it every day and you're seeing the affects on the children and i think that you're probably more open to a more drastic solution than maybe someone else who doesn't see it all of the time. mary, thank you for your phone call and thank you for the big heart you have as well. very much so. let me read a facebook comment from deborah. deborah says this "it's been proven in my family that a child can excel and succeed in life despite the parent. let's not change our future by eliminating a potential asset to our society." so that's the other side. katie says this "sterilization, no. intrauterin devices, iuds, they

breaking news in the caylee anthony case. one of her mother's friends behind bars was telling an amazing story. the young woman says casey anthony admitted to her that she used to knock her daughter caylee out with chloroform. kathy of hln affiliate wftv talked to mya derkovich. >> reporter: she spoke with us today at the lowell correctional institution in ocala. she told us casey anthony talked to her about using chloroform to knock out caylee so she could party. >> she would pour it on like a rag like a wash rag and put it over the baby's face so she will inhale it and that will knock her out. >> reporter: did she say what she used to knock her out? >> i can't pronounce it. chloroform. >> reporter: but when she was
3:01 pm
questioned under oath by investigators, she did not mention chloroform. we asked why. >> and when they came to see me, i only remember bits and pieces because that's how it was. it was a year later. >> reporter: she says she's still remembering things. she said she told us casey also drugged caylee to prevent her mother from babysitting. >> she felt leaving caylee with her more often they would get a closer bond and that's what she didn't want. >> reporter: she said casey never seeped upset that an alleged kidnapper might be holder her daughter. >> people would say casey, where's caylee just messing with her and she will just smile. it didn't bother her. >> reporter: we asked her whether she's saying these things hoping to get a break on her sentence in exchange. >> i was facing the death penalty, i got 30 years. i'm blessed. there's nothing i need. i'm fine with the sentence i have. >> that was wftv reporting
3:02 pm
there. beth karas just spoke to casey anthony's lawyer, jose baez, about his reaction to this interview. all right, beth, what did he say? >> hello, christi. i asked him about the specific allegations in this interview, and he is standing by a statement that the defense has released a couple of days ago shortly after the interview came out and after judge strickland stepped down, and he said we received nearly daily requests to respond to the latest case developments and related media reports, and will not comment on every story published in connection to this case. casey anthony maintains her innocence and looks forward to her day in court. of course, it remains to be seen, christi, whether or not maya will actually take the stand. >> what do we know about her, beth? >> she's a convicted murderer. she is serving 30 years for murdering a 15-year-old teen. she's a former gang member, and she took this deal of 30 years in order to testify against the other two people who were
3:03 pm
arrested with her. she did say at one point in the interview that it's pretty good deal for her. she was facing death at one point and now shea g got 30 yea. >> from a legal perspective from the piece you just saw from wftv, anything in there that strikes you particularly in terms of the defense for casey anthony? >> well, first of all, she's got major credibility issues. this is a convicted murderer, and why would casey anthony say these things to her? they didn't know each other before casey got arrested. they met in the orange county jail and shared a pod. they weren't cell mates or anything, but they were in a pod. they were in administrative segregation statement at least for part of the time. but if a jury were to believe her, and again major credibility issues, the details about chloroform on a rag anded prosecution does have a theory that perhaps caylee anthony was
3:04 pm
drugged by her mother and then her mouth was taped, that could be extremely damaging, but it remains to be seen if the prosecution will even call her because her memory seems to be getting better now. she's getting a little publicity, a little media attention. who knows, maybe she wants to sweeten her deal a little. >> a lot of possibilities. christi paul talking with jean casarez. we thank her and christi for that. other big story of the day, the nfl is dropping the hammer on pittsburgh steelers quarterback ben roethlisberger. he will sit out six games. commissioner roger goodell has ordered the star player benched for the start of the 2010 season. goodell and the president of the steelers told roethlisberger about the suspension today. a college student having accused him of sexual assaulting her in a georgia bar last month. no criminal charges came from it, but the commissioner says that doesn't matter. >> it's about playing this game. the way you conduct yourself in
3:05 pm
a way that brings a negative reaction from our fans, from everybody involved in the league and reflects poorly on yourself and your team and the nfl, that's what the personal conduct policy is. you don't have to be convicted of a crime. you're going to be held accountable to that standard and we expect them to meet that. >> joining us now "in session" host ryan smyth. can this be appealed? >> no, no. right now it looks like it will be -- commissioner goodell gets to decide so he can put down this penalty. the interesting thing here is it can actually be less than six. it can be four games if he follows the policy outline but if he doesn't it can be longer than that. >> what are the conditions. >> the conditions are interesting and a little new for the nfl. a comprehensive behavioral evaluation by medical professionals and he has to show he's doing anything they say in terms of what they want him -- who they want him to meet with and make sure he doesn't repeat this behavior. >> there's no precedent for
3:06 pm
this. >> there is precedent for asking for behavioral evaluations, but it's the way this is done here. it seems like a lot of it is we want you to undergo evaluations from a bunch of different professionals. that hasn't really been done a lot with the nfl. i won't say it's never been done, but they are certainly looking at his behavior specifically. >> do you think they will trade him? >> that is the big question. right now they had another player, santonio holmes, who was potentially involved in an altercation not proved, and they traded him. the steelers are saying we expect a standard of behavior, especially from our quarterback, our team leader. i wouldn't be surprise fd they were looking for trade opportunities. >> how about a nobody who gets -- does something wrong with a young girl, maybe a 20-year-old, you know, she shouldn't be drinking, all that. would this result in a six-game suspension? >> i think it could. >> you think it could? >> it's because of this xhi commissioner. he's very interested in setting up an image for the nfl. he wants people to know this is a family-friendly game.
3:07 pm
everybody can come, you can believe in our players. if it's ben roethlisberger or the 45th guy on the worst team in the league, he wants everybody to know penalties will be severe and this is a severe penalty. >> do you know what the reaction of pittsburgh might be? >> i know pittsburgh fans are angry, but i have also heard from a lot of fans who say we expected something out of ben as well and this will get him to clean up his behavior. this is the second time a woman has come forward saying something like this, and he's had other issues in the past. so this is not a good thing for him but maybe it will turn around his behavior. >> the schedule is the same as it would be anyway. they will not change any games. >> no games moved. if he does well, he gets to play in a preseason game and be part of off-season activities. he's looking at six games, maybe four if he follows the policy. it's a severe penalty. >> thank you very much. well, mayors across the country say a gap in federal law makes their cities unsafe. what they're doing to change the rules for buying guns and what you think about it. so, doctor...

a bipartisan group of mayors is launching a new campaign to change the loophole in federal law that enables criminals or militia groups or anybody to buy a gun at a gun show with no background check. they're airing a series of tv ads this week to appeal to the senate to close the loophole. it also started a website close the loophole.org which includes an online petition to congress. michael bloomberg says so far congress has turned a blind eye to the problem. >> congress requires you do background check before you sell a gun in a gun store. most gun dealers are honest, follow the law. 1% of them don't. but there's another way you can buy a gun. if you go to a gun show, at gun shows explicitly there is no requirement to do background checks, and so a dealer could take all of his or her inventory and go to a gun show and sell it without the background checks. people say i go to buy one gun,
