good morning, sunshine. we're going to start right now breaking news. i'm robin meade and here's what's going on. >> we are deploying every resource available, and we will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice. >> while you were sleeping, they arrested an american citizen in the attempted times square bombing. you heard from attorney general eric holder revealing the person's identity. let's jump into the huge story here. the suspect's name is faisal shahzad, 30-year-old naturalized u.s. citizen from pakistan.

one low enforcement tells cnn he acted alone. he was arrested at jfk airport last night after he already boarded a plane for dubai and another source says the jetway had been pulled back from that flight. shahzad is expected in court today. last night attorney general eric holder says the investigation is not finished. >> over the course of the day today, we have gathered significant additional evidence that led to tonight's arrest, which was made by agents from the department of homeland security's customs and border protection. this investigation is ongoing as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence and we continue to pursue a number of leads. but it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill americans. >> early this morning agents were searching a home in bridgeport, connecticut, connected to the case. a law enforcement source says

that shahzad is believed to be the person who drove the suv filled with explosives to times square. the vehicle identification number was removed from the dashboard but police got it from the engine block and that led them to the person who sold the pathfinder for cash about three weeks ago, and a source says that that person i.d.'d shahzad from a photo. investigator had the man's photo because he had just become a naturalized citizen in april of last year. here's what else we know this morning, he traveled to dubai in june of 2009, a couple of months after becoming a u.s. citizen. we don't know if that was his final destination, that's travel hub. law enforcement sources say there has not been any derogatory information about shahzad in their system before last night's arrest. now the information is coming in quickly this morning. stay tuned for any new info about the case all throughout the day. we're going to bring it to you this morning as soon as we get it. i might interrupt another story if we get something new but

right now let's get some of the other stories also making news today. flooding has left thousands of homes and building across nashville under water including the grand ole opry house and the country music hall of fame, for the first time since 1975, the opry is being forced to move shows to other venues. the opry land resort which is what you're seeing is closed indefinitely. >> it's a tragic day for the entire gaylord family, our stars and what we call our employees. we put our heart and souls into this place and to see the devastation from the rainfall and the floods is something that tears your heart in half. >> at least ten people have died in the city of nashville. thousands have evacuated and the problem is the water that they can drink, they're being told to conserve water. workers have been sandbagging the only remaining water treatment plant. the governor declared 52 counties as disaster areas. the water is not expected to

drop below the flood stage until tomorrow morning. and you know what? if you are there and you have some interesting pictures you want to send us to show the flooding, do that, go to cnn.com/robin and be an i-reporter. we're going to find out how voters are reacting to partisan bickering in washington. three states are holding primaries in indiana, a tea party favorite and a former senator are the front-runners in a republican senate race. they want a seat held by a retiring democrat. in ohio three democrats want a shot at a senate seat held by a retiring republican. oil from the massive spill in the gulf could start washing ashore along the florida panhandle today. experts say that it could reach the florida keys by the weekend. now yesterday governor charlie crist expanded his declaration of emergency to 19 counties along the gulf coast. it comes as a desperate fix-it operation is under way. crews are working on this giant steel container that they hope

will be fitted over the well head to stop a flow, kind of like a dome. >> the idea being that the oil would funnel up through it, all the way to the surface, whereby we would capture that oil on the surface, and with a vessel and help minimize the impact to the environment. >> but many are not waiting for others as they are taking measures into their own hands. our own richard lui met up with a marina owner in a place called dog river, alabama, who is not waiting for help. >> we got to try to do something right here on our own, right there, mouth of the river. this is all the area the marshlands you've got to deal with. >> what do we have at stake here? >> we got homes, we got marinas, we got restaurants, we got boat yards, we got marsh area. that's heavy dooty boom and we'll use it in the river if we have to. >> reporter: why are you doing? >> it's our livelihood. we got 38 families that work here besides all of the other marinas. if we don't take care we don't

have jobs. i've been through fires, tornadoes and hurricanes and never had to do anything like this. we got our bust our tails and make it work. >> reporter: what's this over here? >> the eight inch boom. >> reporter: so this is what you got just for your defense? >> that's right to take care. >> reporter: so if the oil gets in here -- >> we got a mess. we got a mess. it won't be cleaned up in my lifetime. >> reporter: and robin, you know, sunny middleton, a very strong man. i asked him what's driving him to take this into his own hands without waiting for bp or the government "i was adopted at the age of 11 months. my mother raised me, and i asked what would your mother think of taking this into your own hands" he said, "she'd get mad if i didn't do it." >> he said hey if this comes ashore it won't be cleaned up in my lifetime, that is a reality check if that's true.

south, this system is still around. hi, bob. >> good morning, robin. it shifted down to the south a little bit so some good news for you, tennessee. kentucky getting some more rain this morning, it's another low pressure reaching up to the north. here's the cold front, the one that was a slow mover moving through the deep southeast over the last couple of days, still active this morning. the rain coming out of the gulf of mexico piling on across western florida, and interesting to note at the surface there is a low pressure center right around that delta by the mississippi river. you can see right there, also notice the wind directions kind of swirling around that so the northern gulf today winds should be offshore by this afternoon, strong, too. northeasterly winds 15, 25 miles per hour from panama city through the region as that low moves on by. choppy waters, too, windy, scattered showers, scattered thunderstorms out there, too, and then that i-10 across the panhandle of florida, big line of thundershowers moving on through, not severe, it's heavy rain and getting lightning as

bringing you up to speed on our breaking news story. big story here, a man has been arrested in the bomb scare in new york's times square. here's what we've learned this morning. the guy's name is faisal shahzad, a naturalized u.s. citizen from pakistan, arrested last night after he boarded this plane for dubai, and he's expected in court today. investigators are searching a house in bridgeport, connecticut, as well. the plane, i don't know if we can take that full here, was supposed to leave at 11:30 last night. then delayed it for obvious reasons during the investigation to 2:30, then 4:30 and you can see it looks like they are pushing back from the plane, i think that's the chopper operator there, giving us that live shot, but you can see that it appears that maybe they might be pushing back from the gate to finally get this flight under way, it was headed to dubai, and they arrested the man off of this flight, faisal, what's his last name, shahzad, who is a

u.s. citizen, naturalized from pakistan. so we'll watch that and see if that flight does get to take off after hours of being basically i think what they call on the apron. a men's lacrosse player from the university of virginia has been charged for allegedly murdering a women's lacrosse player at the school. here's rafer weigel with the details. what is going on? >> robin as you can imagine the students at uva are deeply affected by this. 22-year-old george huguley, senior lacrosse player arrested and jails after police found his on again/off again girlfriend dead. yeardley love's roommate cited a possible alcohol overdose, she had suffered "physical trauma." police chief longo told jane velez-mitchell they questioned huguley after that. >> our first encounter with him

was at his apartment a few blocks away. he came to the police department to speak with investigators voluntarily, at some point thereafter, probable cause developed and we sought a charging document for his arrest. >> the chief says there are no previous reports of violence between the two seniors. the clubs that tiger woods used to win four major tournaments consecutively are for sale on ebay for $250,000. the irons were used in his wins at the 2000 u.s. open, british and pga championship and the masters win in 2001, they call it the tiger slam. they come with a certificate of authenticity. hopefully a guarantee that you can play as well as tiger woods. that's a look at sports. >> for that much money. hey, thank you. okay, well obviously we have a breaking story from jfk airport, i don't know if everybody else is delay there had or just this one flight that's supposed to be taking off for dubai after they arrested a

square. central investigators searched a gnome connecticut where it's believed that faisal shahzad has been living but they would not give the details about that. a law enforcement official says that shahzad claims to have acted alone but federal investigators say they're looking at the possibility that it was not a lone wolf here. here's attorney general eric holder. >> the american people should know that we are deploying every resource available, and we will not rest until we have brought everyone responsible to justice. >> meanwhile expect tighter security at airports along the east coast. a tsa official says that extra steps are being taken to detect possible car bombs, prevent other kinds of attacks and conduct additional passenger screenings. passengers seem to kind of be getting used to this. >> i'm sure everything's under control and the guys are going to do their best to make sure we stay safe but no change in my flying thoughts.

>> we have an understanding of the situation, and just be patient and let life go on. >> stay tuned for any new information in the case throughout the morning. we're going to bring it to you as soon as we get it. right now some stories making news also today on this tuesday. the obama administration has said it wants oil giant bp to pay for all of the costs associated with the gulf oil spill. a law passed in the wake of the exxon "valdez" spill says that companies have to pay for the cleanup cost but it limits other cost payments like lost wages to only $75 million. now, if bp is found liable for the spill that cap can removed. the response spreads across states and governments down to individual boat owners, richard lui is in biloxi, mississippi, this morning, with more on that angle. the real folks just kind of taking charge to try to stop this. hi, richard. >> reporter: hi, robin. they are taking charge. you can imagine we're in almost week two here, and they're

waiting for this potential oil slick. is it going to hit and affect their area? many of them are saying rather than just sit around, what can i do to make this situation better? how can i prepare for what could change my livelihood and my way of life in a significant way? you're seeing localized movements, the fishermen themselves or local governments, such as that parrish president in louisiana. >> if we get inundated with oil we'll need a crew in each one of these areas because you have to be within 15 minutes either way to respond as it moves into the marsh. >> if we can be compensated, make a couple dollars, you know, helping clean up at the same time, that will be wonderful. because i don't think there's going to be no future in the shrimp. >> reporter: very difficult for mr. regas, fisherman there. they put down $10,000 for a two-week trip, a lot of money but also can have a lot of

revenue. robin, they are hiring in some areas, they are putting together, shall i say, groups of fishermen so they are prepared to go out and assist the environmental companies in cleaning up an oil spill, should it hit their area. we've heard there's too much supply, if you will, that are lining up for the classes, lining up to get on the lists to assist in the cleanup should it happen. so you can see the dynamic. they want to do something, but again they have to wait as well, as there is that moratorium on fishing right now, all the way from florida through the areas of louisiana. >> you know the first thing that comes to mind for me, what can do you? i mean, what can do you to stop it from coming ashore? >> reporter: you know, what some are doing is they are looking for their own equipment. we were at one live location in alabama in dauphin island and one gentleman came over to us, robin, as we were just breaking down, he said, "richard, what can i do to protect my own home, my boat dock, my area of

alabama? do you know where i can buy these boomles we've been seeing in pictures, do you know where i can buy the dispersants?" it's heartening to see people do something on their own to better the situation. they don't want to sit around, robin. they want to do something. >> absolutely that, sense of urgency. thank you so much, richard, live in biloxi, mississippi, and we'll continue to go back to him with more on that. the oil spill is also a big story on facebook with our facebook friends. for example, amy in mobile, alabama, says "we are taking our children to the beach, because it may be the last time that we will get to take them while they are young." vic responded to list of groups looking for volunteers "didn't bm make like $4 billion in profit in the first three months of this year? bp should be employing every unemployed person in the united states to help clean up this disaster." mose says "this could turn out to be a much bigger economic disaster for the gulf coast states than katrina." we give the news but it's all about your review to go to

cnn.com/robin, hit facebook or the e-mail to contact us. another big story today is massive flooding that we've been seeing across the south. it's from a storm system that still has some kick in it, bob. >> it does, and powerful thunderstorms this morning, robin, early, big heavy rainmakers. the dew points are way up into the 60s, low 70s, it tells you it's a testament to how much water is in the air. the cold front itself right on through north carolina and south carolina, and georgia and dipping down towards the gulf of mexico. look at all of the thundershowers riding along that and i also plotted a surface low that's right around that delta river part, the river delta right there in the gulf of mexico, look at the winds around this thing, swirling quickly now. winds out of the south when you get to the east of the low, out of the west and out of the north when you get to the west part of that low. as this moves on through, winds for the northern gulf choppy but everybody will see a wind shift to the northeast by later this afternoon, hopeful lay it steers that oil slick and the oil spill

away from the coast. we'll see what that happens to be, what it looks like. thundershowers rolling right through western florida, the panhandle, big line of thundershowers right there by i-10. get up the line farther out of macon, heavy rains to your south. big thunderstorm line into areas like mccrae and moving to the east. atlanta a foggy mess, around d midtown a low level visibility issue, probably delays at the airport because of the clouds hanging on. sunshine today, with all of the heavy rain yesterday we have the fog out there. rain for the northeast, maybe some storms. we'll get to that, robin, in about a half hour. >> thank you. you know the extra baggage fees you've been paying? they really aelded up. wait until you hear how much they boosted the airlines' bottom line. oh, sure, yeah. and students at one high school couldn't figure out who was stealing from their lockers, until they caught it on tape! úú

to the mexico interior secretary about security. the governor of massachusetts lifted a boil water order this morning for 29 communities, only one city is still under the ban now. om schools shut off main supplies to make sure the kids didn't use the unsafe water. >> make sure you use the sanitizer. >> wash your hands and then use the sanitizer. >> a lot of times students are touching their face and you just want to be, you're better safe than sorry. >> the water main break affected last night's game at fenway. water fountains around the park were shut off and the fans could buy bottled soda. the red sox had ice from rhode island brought into the clubhouse. because of a water main break. later on today the white house will tell you about its plan to force the big banks to pay you back for the big bailouts. so far some companies have been lining up. trying to get the government out of their hair.

>> some parts of it >> good morning. >> i think we all think nobody likes extra taxes, right? >> no. >> but do you like them if they're aimed at a big bank to cover this thing so you don't have to have a bailout again. kind of like hmm what do you hate worse, a new tax or the bailout, this would be based on bank's behavior. maybe you think that when they take your money they should put it under a mattress and keep it safe for awhile but they don't. they lend it out there. so part of it is how much of your money they are lending out, the more they risk, the more they have to pony up so what do you think? do you think this is a case where maybe you are in favor of a big tax? the white house says that the new tax on banks would raise $90 billion in a decade, which would mostly cover the cost of the bailout. some critics say the banks will just pass the cost along to you anyway. i don't know. what do you think? speaking of fees, now those are fees at banks. what about fees for you? last year, we all paid nearly $8 billion in airline fees.

that is up 40%. they are really looking at those fees as a way to try to help out airlines. they are for checking your bags, changing your reservation, not your tickets, by the way. the airline industry still lost its shirt last year, about $9 billion. just so you know, though, i like this part, robin, southwest ceo says because his airline doesn't charge for bags, they gained nearly $1 billion in market share. he says their business is doing better by not charging you fees. >> they're kind of smart, they really marketed the fact that they didn't, there are commercials and everything. >> yeah. >> thank you. a police officer tasered a teenager after he ran onto the field at a baseball game. now investigators are looking into whether the officer went too far. see what you think. first mother's day is sunday, don't forget but let's pay tribute to some of the moms and all of the things they do every day. here is queen latifah. >> hey, this is queen latifah

facebook. what not to post. in "the new york times" square bomb plot the suspect's name is faisal shahzad. he's a 30-year-old naturalized citizen from pakistan. one law enforcement source tells our sister network cnn, this man, after they arrested him, said he acted alone. he was arrested at jfk airport last night after he boarded a plane for dubai. authorities say the jet plane had been pulled back. two others were also taken off the plane and then airline officials say they were allowed back on. the emirates flight finally took off. president obama was briefed six times yesterday about how the investigation was progressing. he was notified of the arrest just after midnight eastern. now, last night attorney general eric holder said the investigation is not finished. >> this investigation is ongoing as are our attempts to gather

useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads, but it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill americans. well, earlier this morning agents were searching a home in bridgeport, connecticut, connected with the case, and they removed full plastic bags from the house. sources say faisal shahzad was said to have put it in the suv. that led them to the person who sold the pathfinder about three weeks ago. that person i.d.'d him from that photo. he was a naturalized citizen from parliament hill of last year. here's what else we know. he traveled to debut in june of 2009 a couple of months after becoming a citizen. don't know if that was ever his

final destination, but he returned to the united states eight months later. law enforcement sources say there's not been any derogatory info about this guy in the system before last night's arrest. so the information is coming in quickly today, so stay tuned for any new info on the case. when we get it, you will get it. right now, though, because we're hln, let's touch on sum of the other big stories of the day. get this. companies are about to get big cash incentive to help retirees. they're expect tied nouns a $5 billion subsidy program today. businesses could use the money to cover up to 80% of the cost of medical claims. medicare does not kick in until the age of 65. okay, back to more developing stories today. floodwaters are being blamed for at least ten deaths in nashville, thousands have evacuated, and now people are being told to cob serve their water. workers have been sandbagging

oil from a massive spill in the gulf could start washing ashore along the florida panhandle today. it could reach the keys by the weekend, however, it's coom employ indicated process to try to forecast how it's going to move. yesterday governor charlie crist expanded his declaration of emergency to 19 counties along the gulf coast. this comes as a desperate repair operation is under way. crews are working on this giant steel dome. they're hoping it will be fitted over the wellhead, stopping the flow, kind of like a cap. >> we would capture that oil on the surface, and with a vessel, and help minimize the impact of the environment. >> many are not waiting for others. they're taking measures into their own hands. let me show you how. richard lui is going to be joining us live in a few moments here. yesterday he met an ownener dog river, alabama, who is not waiting for help.

emirates, i think, was the name of the airline. now, they say that the man's name is faisal shahzad, and he's a naturalized u.s. citizen from pakistan. the connection -- possible connection to connecticut, if we want to go back to the live picture, is that the car that ended up in times square was purchased in connecticut. so now we have investigators searching a residence in connecticut. do we know if maybe that's where this man lived? we don't have that confirmed this morning yet or don't have exactly all the -- the line here between what happened in new york and what happened in connecticut. we don't have that line exactly drawn, but we do know that's where the car came from. meanwhile the suspect's due in court today. we don't know what charges he's going to face. the investigators have removed full plastic bags and we learned that president obama was briefed about the investigation six times yesterday. he was informed of the man's arrest 20 minutes after the fact.

our breaking story today. a u.s. citizen has been arrested in a times square bombing attempt and is due in court sometime this morning. faisal shahzad is originally from pakistan. law enforcement officials say they nabbed him just as his flight was about to take off from jfk airport. come here and take a look at this live picture. he he's the one who drove the suv to times square. he's from bridgeport, connecticut. you're looking at a residence being searched by authorities. looks like we may have the fbi

involved in that. i don't have that confirmed, but it looks to me like a dozen different investigators looking at contents, perhaps, from the porch or from inside that residence. more on that as it comes in. people from across nashville and memphis are dealing with devastating flooding. 18 people have died across the state, that money. thousands of homes and businesses are under water. people are also being told to think about their water supply, to conserve water. places like the grand ole opry house are closed indefinitely. pictures of the backstage door flooded on their website. a judge blocked a controversial law. it requires a woman to ha see the ultrasound and hear the fet fetus. it's said it's unconstitutional. those who back the new law say it will eventually be enforced.

particular person to these particular events in times square. >> you know what? let's talk right now to hln security analyst mike brooks who is very plugged in. let's duo back to this live picture of investigators combing this residence in bridgeport, connecticut. what we know is the car appears to have been purchased in connecticut, and there are reports wondering did the guy actually have a residence there in connecticut. what are they looking for? what can you tell from that picture, mike? >> well, robin, we know that apparently he was living for a short time, at least, in bridgeport. and remember we talked about yesterday the car and the tags on the car. they were apparently stolen off of a car and an auto repair shop in brick port. what we're doing, these are members of the fbi's evidence response team, robin, and they're going through very carefully everything in that house. we've been on this scene at this house in bridgeport since a

little shortly after 4:00 a.m. when they went ahead and executed a search warrant along with a connecticut state bomb squad. >> so when you spread out cardboard like this, it looks like there's a definite process here. can you tell me what that is? >> as you go through -- i used to be one of the team leaders for the response team for the fbi. you go in and take pictures and label every room, every table, everything you're taking evidence out of. they bring it out. they've got the cardboard and paper out for any kind of trace evidence. keep in mind we had propane, gasoline, and these explosive little m-80s they were talking about that were in the vehicle. so when you come into a house like this, robin, you don't know what to expect. could it be booby trapped, could there be other explosives in there, bomb-making material in there? that's what you had to be looking for. you have to be extremely careful

stories. the obama administration says it wants oil giant bp to pay all the associated costs with the oil spill. it says companies have to pay for clean-up costs but it limits other cost payments like lost wages to only $75 million. i know. only. but if bp is found to have been negligent or have violated any federal law, that cap is removed. now, the response to the oil spreads across states and governments down to individuals. richard lui is in biloxi, mississippi, with more on what the real people are trying to do here. hi, richard. >> reporter: hi, robin. it's been a better part of two weeks, an anguishing wait for so many gulf coast residents as their lively hood has been stopped. they can't go out fishing or to work as they have in the past. they're not sitting around over the last couple of weeks, so they're looking at how they can make a difference, many of them are. so on the local level, they're

trying to figure out how they can prepare themselves for what might be an oil spill that will hit their home and their livelihood. >> if we get inundated with oil, we will need a crew in each one of these areas because you have to be within 15 minutes either way to respond as it moves into the marsh. >> if we can be compensated, make a couple of dollars helping to clean up at the same time, that will be wonderful, because i don't think there's going to be no future in this room. >> y >>. >> reporter: >> reporter: you know, he mentioned he's worried that he won't have neifi tur in the strigs. some of them may get compensated. unfortunately what we're hearing is that there's too much supply. there are too many fishermen that want to do this, robin, and not enough demand to have them help clean up should an oil

spill hit. you know, this is a lot of money at stake for many of them as you can probably imagine. they don't have a lot of reserves in the bank kept and that's what the dynamic is right now in the gulf coast. >> you know, i'm thinking that maybe there is too much demand right now from the fishermen to help out because it hasn't hit yet. but i'm thinking that would change as soon as you have all this oil that comes ashore. >> you know, one would hope that actually there would be too much supply in the end as we watch that oil spill, right, robin? but you're right. once it does hit shore, it would be a catastrophe in placmany pl along the gulf coast. it would be a mixed blessing. right now they're just thinking about their pocketbook. they've got families, employees, two or three employees, very simple, very basic, average everyday people, robin, that are trying to make it to the next week or month. >> richard lui live in biloxi,

bringing you up to speed on a big breaking story today, a man has been arrested late last night in the bomb scare in time scarce. here's what we know about him. his name is faisal shahzad. an official says he was going to continue on to pakistan. now the man is expected in court today, and investigators are right now searching a house in

connecticut. they've removed several plastic bags worth of stuff and we've learned that president obama was also briefed about all of this six times yesterday and was informed of the arrest about 20 minutes after it happened. i don't know. what do you think about this? police used a taser to top a teenager after he ran onto the field of a baseball game. hi, rafer. >> good morning, robin. it's very debatable. i can see both sides of the argument. a 17-year-old kid runs onto the field wearing a phillies shirt and cap. look at the cop behind him, aiming the taser right at the guy. that says it all. they did tase and subdue the 17-year-old. now police are looking into whether he fired the equipment improperly. i understand there have been instances where fans have attacked umpires on the field and it ee scary stuff, but did you really need to tase the guy? he was charged with

tresspassing? yeah, the massive flooding in tennessee has put the titans' field under water. the water reaches the first row of seats and obviously this is one of many buildings affected by the flood. their arena is also flooded. they put a link on their website to help the victims through the red cross. that's a nice thing to do. ben roethlisberger reportedly spent the weekend at a clinic being clinic. the "pittsburgh post gazette" the evaluation will take days, not weeks. the team would not comment publicly. and youtube helped a kid get signed by the cleveland browns. played only eight games of football at the university of waterloo and put together this highlight video of him complete with music and there he is

highlighted in the middle of your screen and the browns called and signed hims as a free agent because of a youtube video. that is amazing stuff. >> just the mere fact of how do you get everyone's e-mail. >> i heard of players putting together highlight videos and sending it out to teams but this is the first team i saw a team say, yeah, saw the video and signed the kid because of the video. >> i like the way it's done nowadays. after the recent oil disaster in the gulf, one state is backing off plans for offshore drilling. now, they'll have to find another way to close a massive deficit. good morning, sunshine. it's a busy morning for you, i'm sure. have we said thank you lately? we so appreciate you viewing and right now i'm robin meade. let's jump into some breaking news. here's what's going on this morning. there has been an arrest in the times square bomb plot. more on what we're learning about the suspect taken off of a plane at jfk overnight. several country music landmarks are shut down from flooding in nashville when any relief is expected for that area. a county sheriff is arrested for allegedly selling drugs out of the back of a cop car.

first, though, our breaking news this morning. the man arrested in the new york bomb scare is faisal shahzad, that's his name. he's the 30-year-old naturalized u.s. citizen from pakistan. now, one law enforcement source said he told investigators that he acted alone on this. shahzad was arrested at jfk airport last night, actually after he had already boarded a plane headed for dubai. he was headed for pakistan. now, another source says that the jetway had been pulled back. two other people were also taken off the plane. an airline official says they were actually not allowed back on. that flight finally took off a couple hours ago. so, this man is expected in court today. now, right now agents are searching a home in bridgeport, connecticut, apparently connected with the case. residents say the investigators removed full plastic bags from the house. we were watching this video and getting in live video of the work they're doing this morning.

law enforcement analyst mike brooks is here. just by looking at the cardboard they had there, can you tell what they pulled out? >> i can tell you what they're looking for, robin. having done this a number of times myself. they're going in and looking for anything at all that can link him, shahzad, to that nissan pathfinder. now, we know that they took it away from 45th and broadway the other day all wrapped in a yellow sheet, if you will. and all the investigators had the suit so they won't transfer any evidence. what they're looking for here, were there any more materials for possibly another bomb? were there materials leftover from another bomb that he may have allegedly made and put into this nissan pathfinder? one of the things, too, very important here, was there a computer inside that house or any cell phones because that is how they're possibly going to go through forensically and see if

there have any other ties and see if anyone is involved in this bomb plot. >> when we talk to mike brooks we call him a security analyst, he's not just a talking head here. you have a lot of experience in this type of thing. can you also tell me based on your experience here, do you think they let him get so far as to nearly take off on the plane or was that on purpose to see if he had anybody around him that he was collaborating with? >> you know, there have been times when, well, we've gone ahead, when i was with the fbi joint terrorism task force let somebody go ahead and let everything play out just to see exactly what possibly might have been in any checked luggage. give them some time to do that. they had him under surveillance the whole time and i do know yesterday on prime news yesterday we talked about a pakistani male that i heard from sources that they were possibly looking at. they were letting it play out and then all of a sudden put the brakes on it and brought it back

and had everything under control. >> mike brooks, you have a lot of connections. go work the phones and tap me on the shoulder if you hear anything interesting. >> will do. flooding has left thousands of homes and buildings under water including the grandole opry house. the opry is being forced to move shows to other venues. it is closed now indefinitely. the city symphony center is also hit hard. >> the entire basement, subbasements are completely full of water. we're about 3 1/2 feet from the water entering the main concert hall. the concert grand pianos are under water. >> yeah. power went out this morning to businesses along the city's river front. at least 29 people have died in three states from this same storm.

thousands in nashville are still evacuated. people are also being told that they need to conserve their water. the workers have been sandbagging the workers only remaining treatment plant. 52 counties were declared as disaster areas and the water will not drop below the flood stage until tomorrow morning. i can't imagine as i'm looking at the place where the grand old opry and houses and i can't imagine all these different iconic landmarks that are damaged or lost. work crews are racing the massive oil spill in the gulf of mexico trying to figure it out or fix it before it gets worse. now, the big steel box that you're seeing here could be the key. right now crews are working to build a dome that they hope will take it, then they're going to hope to take it out to the gulf and fit the well, fit this thing over the well. basically, they want this to be a cap. >> the idea being that the oil would funnel up through it all

the way to the surface whereby we would capture that oil on the surface with the vessel and help minimize the impact of the environment. >> so, many are not waiting, though. they're taking measures into their own hands. so, with an example of that, richard lui is going to join us live in a moment. yesterday he met a marina owner in dog river, alabama, who's not waiting for help. hold your thoughts there, richard. let me show folks your pictures. >> we're going to try to do something there on our own. this is all areas of marsh lands that we have to do something with. >> what do we have at stake here? >> we have homes, marinas, restaurants, boat yards and we have marsh area. >> that's heavy duty boom and we'll use it in the river, if we have to. >> why are you doing this? >> because it's our livelihood. we have 38 families that work here and we're not going to have jobs. we had a meeting this morning and i said i've been through fires and tornados and

hurricanes and i never had to do this. we have to bust our tails and make it work. >> what's this over here? >> that's the eight inch boom. >> this is what you got just for your defense? >> that's right. to take care of it. >> if the oil gets in here? >> we got a mess. we got a mess. it won't be cleaned up in my lifetime. >> and, robin, what he is thinking about not only the 38 families that work with him in his marina but the 900 homes and he's thinking of the restaurants and i asked him, why do you want to protect all of them? this is your money. how much are you spending? he said, i'm not going to tell you how much, richard, it doesn't matter. i think it's a personal responsibility. 73 years old. he was adopted and he says his mother has influenced him a lot as a child and that's why he is taking so much personal investment into what's happening there, robin. >> richer, thank you so much.

appreciate that this morning about the stories that these folks -- do they think they're going to be able to do something? what can you do? >> well, they really do feel like they've got a defense plan here, robin. they measured out the openings of dog river and measured at 400 feet and 500 feet of booms and two layers there and absorbent pads that you saw in the discussion that i was having with sonny middleton. they believe they can protect their area and they want to do something. they believe it is their obligations as citizens of this area and residents of this area and hopefully their hopes will be realized should this oil spill make it this way. new this morning, companies will get a big cash incentive to offer health care coverage to early retirees. the obama administration will announce a program today. businesses could use the money to cover up to 80% of the cost of medical claims for former

employees ages 55 to 64. as you might remember, medicare doesn't kick in until you're 65. okay, eight minutes past the hour. let's see, the storm system that really kicked nashville's butt and a lot of other areas over the weekend, it is still around, it has gone south now. this thing is still making up some storms. >> when things like this move that slowly t will rain over the same period over the same piece of land for a long period of time and you just get flooding. 20 inches of rain just two days ago around central tennessee and see heavy rainmakers slide to the east and still out there for the morning. western florida and here's the panhandle and that's i-10. tallahassee radar picking up the rain. luckily here today no severe weather breaking out for the morning and towards lower georgia big pockets of rain moving on through and get to the low country of south carolina. most of the rain here around

goose creek and charleston on the light side and the lightning is flashing just over the state line into georgia. savannah getting a nice thunderstorm coming on through and that is off and on for most of the day. flood warnings for tennessee and basically nashville, that's what it looks like here and all the bright shaded green areas and flood warnings from this weekend's rain and this morning's rain. rain showers breaking up around the ohio valley later on today they refire right around philadelphia and new york and even boston. weak area of low pressure and the severe weather threat right around central wisconsin for the afternoon and powerful thunderstorms and maybe an isolated tornado right in the areas we put in red with wind shear. out to the west, look at this low coming in through great falls. you can see it right there. lots of wind, as well. windy conditions yesterday and windy conditions today. let me show you video from spokane, washington, from yesterday. did a little research and saw the highest wind gust there at the airport 59 miles per hour

a woman's lacrosse player at the university of virginia has been killed and police say that her ex-boyfriend also a lacrosse player is the person responsible. here's rafer with more on what they think unfolded here. >> can you imagine how this is affecting the students at the university. you're supposed to go to college and it's supposed to be a safe environment. the victim weeks away from earning her degree. all of that gone. police arrested her on again, off again boyfriend and charged

him with murdering yeardley love. that roommate called police citing a possible alcohol overdose and looked further and saw she suffered physical trauma and they questioned hugly. >> our first encounter with him was at his apartment just a few blocks away. he came to the police department to speak with investigators voluntarily. at some point thereafter, probable cause developed. >> there was no previous reports of violence between the two. that's a look at sports. >> what a sad, sad story. so much promise in these young people and now this. days after a water main break, 2 million people are hoping they have something to drink now. and more on that story. breaking news today, the u.s. citizen arrested in the times square bombing attempt overnight is waiting to face a judge this morning in new york. faisal shahzad is from pakistan and agents nabbed him just as his flight to dubai was about to take off from jfk. it was believed he was the one who drove the suv to times square and left it there. people across nashville and middletonten are dealing with devastating floods. thousands of homes and businesses are under water forcing people to evacuate. people are being told to conserve water.

places like the grandole opry house are closed indefinitely. we're hearing now that 29 people have died across tennessee, mississippi and kentucky. those are just a few of our headlines today we're working on. i'm robin meade. hope you're doing well. let me get you up to speed on very interesting facts about this story about the attempted bombing in times square. arrested in the attempted car bombing in time s square. faisal shahzad claim he acted alone. there have been claims of responsibility from the pakistani taliban, but, a senior u.s. military official has said that there is no evidence to support that. here's cnn's jeanne meserve on what led investigators to shahzad. >> just so happens that because he had become a u.s. citizen so

recently immigration and customs enforcement had a photograph of him on file and when his name came up they were able to take this photograph and show it to the seller and the seller identified that same individual as being a buyer. that was one of the linchpins in connecting this particular person to these particular events in times square. well, federal investigators say it's still possible that shahzad was not a lone wolf. mike brooks has been working his sources this morning and what are you hearing about what they're learning about him? >> they're learning that he is from a small village in northwest pakistan and reporting that he confirmed with emirates air that he was confirmed on that flight to dubai and he was headed for islamabad. so, was he going back to his home village? it's unknown right now but apparently pakistani interior officials are cooperating with u.s. intelligence officials

there in pakistan. >> now, you spent some time in pakistan when you were with, what, the fbi terrorism task force here? >> yes. >> what can you tell me about the kind of terrorism activity that goes on there in training? >> well, we know that he did apparently also have an i.d. with an address in karachi. robin, i can tell you, i worked two terrorism cases in karachi and it is a hot bed of radicalization for islam. i can tell you when we were there there was a lot going on and four american oil workers had been killed by a terrorist group. so, what ties does he have, if any, to any terrorism group. they're also looking at, robin, to see whether or not he has gone back and forth from there and to receive any training. now, you know, just from my experience and looking at this rudimentary makeup of this explosive device and trying to

set off, if he did make that as a matter of fact, again, allegedly, did he receive any training and, if so, not the typical training on bomb making that you would see. >> in other words, a failed bombing attempt and thank goodness it was failed. you're saying when people get trained there, most of the time they're successful. >> little better training and you see something different. >> all right, interesting. mike brooks, thank you so much, appreciate it. meanwhile, expect tighter security if you're going to airports along the east coast now. a tsa official says that extra steps are being taken to detect possible car bombs, prevent other kinds of attacks and conduct additional passenger screenings. now, passengers seem to be getting used to this. >> i'm sure everything is under control and the guys are going to do their best to make sure that we can stay safe, but no change in my flying thoughts. >> better understanding of the situation. just be patient and let life go on.

>> well, stay tuned for any new information about the times square attempted bombing case about the person arrested throughout the morning. as soon as we get it, i might interrupt a story to bring it to you. new this morning 2 million people in the boston area do now have safe drinking water after a massive water main break that happened over the weekend. the governor of massachusetts lifted a boil order this morning for all 30 communities. most people got by with bottled water. some used paper plates so they wouldn't have to wash the dishes. smart thinking. nothing has stopped the oil leak yet. the well continues to spew more than 200,000 gallons of oil into the gulf every day. now, some of those most affected are also the ones spear heading the response. richard lui is in biloxi, mississippi, with more on that. good morning. >> good morning to you, robin. it's been an anguishing wait for many residents of the gulf coast

because they heard news of this large oil spill getting bigger and smaller and moving east, north, south, west. it has affected their livelihoods. although they can't go fishing in some cases or can't have their jobs on the mainland, what they can do is sign up to help, should an oil spill hit their shores. they're a part of the gulf coast here. in some cases, the residents, as well as local governments, are starting to begin lists and sign-up areas so that these people can help should that oil slick hit the coast. here's the president of plaquemines parish. >> you have to be within 15 minutes either way to respond as it moves into the marsh. >> if we can be compensated and make a couple dollars and help clean up at the same time, that would be wonderful.

i don't think there will be no future in the shrimp. >> no future in the shrimp. they're trying to take it into their own hands. as was mentioned signing up to assist in a potential cleanup and it's somewhat difficult for many of these fishermen because they haven't seen any pictures i was mentioning. they only heard about this oil slick, robin. so, it still affects them, but sort of like a phantom, if you know what i mean. >> we've been saying it's coming and people are saying it's miles off shore but, yet, the waters are kind of swirling around it, so it's not like it's just coming this way. >> they don't want to sit around doing anything. >> just broke my heart when that man said there might not be any sxlimp to have a future with here. you're talking about their livelihood. what do they think they're going to have to do in the future? >> they don't know, robin. many conversations i have had over the last four, five days i don't know what to do next. they're saying we are just hoping and waiting it will turn

for the better. they remain very, very optimistic, but at the same time, extremely emotional. folks that you think are hard fishermen go out each and every day and they are taking this right here in the heart, robin. >> richard lui, thank you so much. certainly thinking about those folks. florida police say a high school gym teacher admitted to stealing hundreds of dollars from his students. one of his students recorded this cell phone video. he showed it to his resource officer and the student was arrested 20 minutes later. he initially denied it but fessed up when they showed him the tape. >> it's hard to see that happen. it's really hard for the school because he's certainly a regular fixture there and a lot of people are going to have a tough time with it. >> the school says that students had complained for years that somebody was stealing from their lockers. the teachers resigned. i don't know, i wonder why

someone didn't catch on earlier. if it always happened in the gym. >> and like a locked cage and only one guy that has the key. >> hello. >> right. >> morning, bob. >> morning, robin. couple things to watch, heavy rain across the deep southeast, still plaguing you, western florida, georgia into the carolinas and away from central parts of tennessee. another weak area of low pressure you can see it rolling on by with the clouds around the ohio valley and light rain around northern kentucky and ohio and flair up thunderstorms later this afternoon and that's across the northeast. lower parts of georgia and blossoming off the coast of mexico. winds swirling around the northern gulf over the next couple days and panama city ahead of this low and moving over this way later today winds all out of the northeast. swirling winds, kind of tough to predict where that oil slick will end up. you can see no warnings but i-10 covered up with heavier

bringing you up to speed on a breaking news story, if you're just waking up and wiping the sleep out of your eyes. the first picture of a man arrested overnight in the times square bomb plot. faisal shahzad. here is what we know. shahzad is a naturalized u.s. citizen from pakistan, a law enforcement source says he was arrested after he boarded a plane for dubai. an airline official says he was going to continue on to pakis n pakistan. now, he is expected in court today. also investigators have been searching a house in connecticut this morning. they've removed several plastic bags and we learned that president obama was briefed about this six times yesterday. he was informed of the arrest 20 minutes after it happened. do we have that picture again if we could put it back up there. this was supposedly him from his facebook page. you know what strikes me there, this man is holding a baby, a

defenseless baby and if he is the man who attempted a car bombing in times square. don't you think of other people as being someone else's baby? it's mind boggling if it's all true. police used a taser to stop a 17-year-old fan after he ran oto the field at a baseball game. was it excessive force? moment. >> and these pictures are going to be among the most googled pictures today. i will show them to you. this was at a phillies game in philadelphia, 17-year-old fan runs onto the field wearing a phillies' shirt and cap and he is tased. here is that picture. look at the cop behind him, holding it right there, aiming it at him. police are now investigating to see if the firing was "the proper use of the equipment." the fan, as you can see on the ground, was subdued. google, phillies and taser and you will get these pictures. the team stays is the first time the cops used a taser to subdue

good morning. you got the coffeemaker going, huh? i'm robin meade. glad you are with us. good morning, sunshine. let me get you up to speed on breaking news today. if you are just getting up, we do have the breaking story there has been an arrest in the times square bomb plot and police are wondering if the man was working alone. more of what we have learned about that suspect. several country music landmarks are shut down after flooding in nashville. when any relief is expected for the area. you are not going to believe some of the pictures we will show you. first, the breaking news this morning, the first picture of a man arrested in the bomb

scare in "new york times" square. his name is niceal shaz zblad, a 30-year-old naturalized citizen from pakistan. one source told investigators that he was acting alone. shaz zblad was arrested at jfk airport last night after he was already on board a plane that was bound for dubai. a law enforcement official says it was actually headed for pakistan after that we have just learned that pakistan's interior minister says the suspect had an i.d. card that showed pakistani residency. another source says that the jetway had already been pulled back from this plane before his arrest. two other people were also taken off the plane and an airline official says they were not allowed back on. we have not learned any information about those two. now, right now, agents are searching a home in bridgeport, connecticut, connected to this case somehow. residents say that investigators removed full plastic bags from the house. we may learn more when shaz zblad goes to court today, the confirmed connection here.

hln law enforcement analyst mike brooks is here. so, any word about possible charges that this man could be facing? >> well, if they can prove, in fact, robin, that he was the one responsible for building that bomb that failed at times square, he could be charged with creating a weapons of mass destruction. i'm sure there's other charges they are working on now and that's why he has not yet appeared because they are still going through that residence in bridgeport to find additional evidence he could be charged w. >> let me try to connect the dots for folks. you might be going, how does bridgeport, connecticut, get into this. >> right. >> you remember the car itself they think was actually purchased in connecticut, so there's the connection there is a lot of questions about is this a place he last lived? you can see them going through and getting bags full of stuff.

>> he was flying from jfk to dubai and set to fly from dubai to islamabad. his family apparently still lives in a small village in northwest pakistan, 25 to 20 miles from peshawar. was he headed back there? we don't know. the pakistani interior ministry is cooperating with u.s. -- u.s. authorities there because they that they also want to know if there's any connections that he had with any other terrorist groups there and possibly any terrorist training. that is one of the things they are looking for in that house, robin, besides the physical evidence, they can also, i guarantee you, looking for any computer forensics that he may have had connection with somebody and the big question right now, was he acting alone. we know when he was taken off that flight at jfk two other

we are three and a half feet from the water entering the main concert hall, lost the organ console, probably a complete lost, the concert grand pianos are under water. >> power went out this morning to the businesses along the city's river front. at least 29 people have died in three states from the storm. thousands in nashville have evacuated. people are also being told they need to conserve walker because workers have been sandbagging the water's only remaining water treatment plant. the governor has declared 52 counties as disaster areas. the water is not expected to drop below the flood stage until tomorrow morning. that is such a loss. all along the gulf, from louisiana to the florida coast, residents there are bracing for the impact of a massive oil spill. yesterday, there's governor, charlie crist, expanded the declaration of emergency to 19 counties. now, it comes as a desperate repair operation is under way. in will a lark the crews are working on this giant dome,

hoping it will be fitted over the well head, stopping the flow of oil. many are not waiting for others. they are trying to help as well. and richard lui is joining us live in a second with more of the story. show you some of the video he shot a marine owner dog river, alabama, who is apparently not waiting for help. >> we are headed east and try to block off the inlet, which you see to the right is part of it. and to the left and down the middle, so, that's what we are going to try to stop the stuff from coming in. to get to this grass, we can't do nothing with it we have to try to stop it or there wouldn't be anything left. >> this is the other boom? >> put that together with the other f we don't use this here, we will use it in the mouth of the river. i want to do something for the whole thing, if we can, to help us all. i got enough for mine, but we need to slow it down to keep it from getting into the marshland. >> sonny, why won't you wait for bp to come in and fix what may be a problem that they created? >> they probably l i don't think

doing is going to help at all in the end? >> you know, robin, what he showed me, 'cause he took me out into the estuary, which is the area he is trying to protect. he is going to put out double booms in that area, because of the low tide, the amount of wave action so small it could be very effective and also purchased these large, absorb bent tubes, those absorbenants could absorb the oil that may make it over the booms in the estuary on the side marshlands which are so important to the man test, the egrets, everything inside the area. beautiful with lots of wildlife. robin, from what he showed me, it looked like it would be able to stop act, least in that small area, an oil slick, should it make it into mobile bay. >> i hope that works. richard, thank you very much. appreciate it. juneau, a new study finds about 30% of women with under the age of 40 are being tested for breast cancer and experts say that may be too many.

middle tennessee are dealing with devastating floods. thousands of homes and businesses are under water and that's forcing people to evacuate. places like the grand old opry house are closed indefinitely. we are hearing now that 29 people have died across tennessee, mississippi and kentucky. those were some of our day's top stories. good morning, i'm robin meade. so let's jump right back into this breaking story today four. more now on this u.s. citizen arrested in the attempted car bombing in times square. this is a photo of 30-year-old faisal shahzad. he is originally from pakistan. a law enforcement source says he claims to have acted alone. documents show that he does have family ties to northwest pakistan, which you might know is a hot bed of militant activity. there have been claims of responsibility from the pakistani taliban, but a senior u.s. military official has said that there's no evidence to support that. now, investigators say that it's still a possible -- that shahzad was not a lone wolf.

hln security analyst mike brooks has been working his sources this morning. so are people seeming to go with the lone wolf theory or saying, gosh, it is just not that simple? >> my law enforcement sources tell me it is not that simple. they don't think he was acting alone but then again, right now, they don't know for sure. on that emirates air flight this morning, robin, when he was pulled off, two other people were pulled off did they have any connection? they are looking into that right now. >> you know, i think the new information is, too, correct me if i am wrong, producers, didn't i read that they actually are saying that there is no connection that the people who were on that flight, those two people pulled off were cleared? is that correct information? two other passengers? yes. from susan candiotti from our sister network saying a federal law enforcement source is saying that the two others who were taken off the plane had nothing to do and they have been cleared and released but you can see, right, mike, just how careful they have to be in this. now, we are talking about someone with ties to pakistan

what can you tell me about your experience, being an investigator and having to go to pakistan? >> well, i have been in karachi, i can tell you, up near peshawar and i can tell you is a hot bed of islamic activity, robin, and he did have an i.d. with an address in karachi. now, the pakistani officials are cooperating with the united states official there is to find out what his connections really are in pakistan, in karachi. was he part of any kind of islamic network? right now, it's too early to say but there is cooperation from the pakistanis and they hope to get to the bottom of this and, you know, in very short time to find out was there any connection anywhere else in the country? >> i do think it was weird in that this guy has family in pakistan and then remember, when this first happened, that there was a claim by the pakistani taliban claiming responsibility. >> right. and the u.s. officials were kind of quick to say, well, you know,

medicare kicks in at the age of 65. nothing has stopped the oil leaking yet. while, the well continues to spew more than 200,000 gallons of oil into the gulf each day. some of those most affected are also the ones spearheading the response, really interesting angle here. richard lui is live in biloxi, mississippi, with more on how the people are basically taking matters into their own hands. >> they are, robin. they are not standing around. their objective is over the last week and a half is we are not going to do nothing, we are going to see how we can better the situation, should an oil slick hit our part of this gulf coast area. so, what some are doing is they are reaching out to volunteer. some are going out and buying booms on their own and some local governments are trying to collect the energy and think in a positive way how to solve this situation. here it's president of plaquemines parish and what essaying about this situation. >> if we get inundated with oil, we will need a crew in each one

of these areas because you can -- you have to be within 15 minutes either way to respond as it moves into the marsh. >> if we can be compensated, make a couple dollars, you know, helping cleanup at the same time that would be wonderful, 'cause i don't think there's going to be no future in the shrimp. >> you know, he is thinking about a lot of things, what is at stake for him is when he decides to go out on one of those trips, it is a $10,000 investment that goes on for two weeks. so based on the moratorium that is out right now, he can't go out fishing. and if he were to choose to go out on a fishing trip, robin, you can see the am of money we have to outlay, many of the fish he may catch may not be well or sellable. so instead, he is trying to redirect that energy, volunteer. the dynamic right now, they have too many volunteers from what we are hearing based on what the availability is from those that they are collecting to go out and try to fix the potential oil spill, should that happen.
