[ sighs ] right? i'm robin meade. morning, sunshine. here's what's going on in the news. okay, well, what in the world? wall street is coming off one of its worst days ever. investigators are looking at whether it could have been caused by a typo. one possibility -- we'll talk about that. lawrence taylor is arrested on a rape charge. we have the allegations and taylor's response. so we'll jump back now to wall street. it's coming off one of its worst days ever and investigators are

looking at whether it could have been caused by a typo. one possibility is that a trader may have put in a sell order for $16 billion instead of $16 million. that simple. whatever the reason, though, computerized selling kicked in, and the dow lost almost 1,000 points. it later recovered two-thirds of that loss. the big plunge caused sheer panic for some investors. before the markets gradually bounced back. money expert jennifer westhoven is here now to show you how it happened moment by moment. isn't it a scary, thought, jen. >> yes. >> just like possibly a human error, do, do, do, entered the wrong thing. >> that somebody could have typed the wrong zeros, a billion instead of a million that that may have happened so that could have been a very big deal. the dow already off $200 -- 200 points. here we go. i think it's going to come up.

woof! this is the thing you don't want to see, total mayhem on the trading floor. there are pictures and sound of the people on the floor itself, that's the new york stock exchange but desks across the country, because what happens, robin, is, people have millions and millions of programs that are already just set up ready to go in case something like this happens, they want to protect our money so it sells. it doesn't know why or how. it doesn't know there's a mistake. it's trying to protect your money. so in minutes the dow off 9%, more than $1 trillion was lost on paper. >> what? >> in u.s. stocks. if you didn't sell, you didn't pay attention to this, right, nothing happened and things will probably right themselves but some people did, all because of the typo. the federal government looking into it, and of course, if it really was just a typo, then you expect things to kind of straighten out, and we are seeing the futures trading higher this morning. >> people who have a 401(k), if they were at work yesterday and

they did not look into this, they did not see this happening and go oh, let me call someone, sell, sell, sell! >> right. >> is everything the same as it was before for you? >> mostly. >> no, right? >> mostly, yes. any stocks that you might own or something like that are fine but the thing is, what about your mutual fund manager? your mutual fund manager might have seen that and gone, sell! i can't let my people go bankrupt. i have teachers, cops and firefighters to look out for. glitch or not i can't let them go down the tubes. they might have sold to protect so you might end up with some losses. the nasdaq is voiding a lot of these trades. >> that would be nice because that stinks. >> yeah. >> and coming up, i want to talk about are there any stop gaps, in other words, that's really scary that someone could be sleepy and type something in and boom, my money's gone. parts of mashville's downtown are reopening after the horrible floods.

you don't believe the mess left behind in some areas. the owner of this house was trapped inside surrounded by water when she saw smoke. luckily she and her dog were arrested by a man on a jet ski seconds before the house exploded into flames. ♪ so here you are now, nowhere to turn ♪ ♪ it's just the same old yesterday ♪ >> this is what i love about nashville. keith urban is one in a long list of country stars who helped the nashville tv station raise almost $2 million for the flood relief last night. president obama called brad paisley and asked him to spread the word fema is there and ready to help. nashville will recover, paisley told cnn's anderson cooper. >> you go through the neighborhoods and it's who are rick to see what we're seeing but amazing to see the volunteers that have come out. i've never seen anything like it. >> we've been driving around out here. i cannot believe the way that

and funnel it upward to a tanker. about 210,000 gallons of crude a day has been spilling into the gulf since that rig exploded last month. in less than ten minutes, correspondent richard lui will show you how that dome is supposed to work and what happens next if it does not work. here is a big story, football great lawrence taylor is in trouble with the law again. he was arrested in new york yesterday, charged with raping a 16-year-old girl. now jo carter has the details on how this supposedly all happened. good morning. >> good morning, robin. when you talk about football great lawrence taylor is arguably one of the greatest football players ever but has also had a lot of run-ins with the law. yesterday he was arrested at a holiday nin suburban new york. police say taylor had sex with an underaged prostitute, a 16-year-old girl, who had runaway from home in march. authorities say rasheed davis, a 36-year-old new york city man,

brought the underaged girl to taylor's hotel room against her will. they say davis then beat the girl, and then handed her over to taylor, who sexually assaulted her. later the girl sent text messages to her uncle, who then went to police. taylor is charged with third-degree rape but he is a free man after posting $75,000 bail. taylor's attorney says his client did not have sex or rape anyone, and that he denies all charges. robin? >> it sounds like there are more details to be sorted out in this case. >> there are tons of layers to be sorted out as the days come forward and obviously police will have more information. >> sounds like a horrible story. thank you very much. times square bombing investigators are looking for a courier who may have funneled cash to the suspect. a federal law enforcement source tells our sister network cnn that faisal shahzad brought more than $80,000 into the united states over several years. it might have paid for the suv and explosives.

huge metal dome 5,000 feet into the gulf of mexico trying to cap a leaking oil well. it is the first time that they used this equipment so deep in the water. correspondent richard lui joins us now more on how this is supposed to work anyway. >> good morning to you, robin. this is going to be very interesting. they're using technology they haven't used before. the dome itself is basically like an upside down funnel, a gargantuan one. it's custom made, weighs 100 tons t will hit the bottom of the sea floor, try to cap off that leak at a mile underneath the sea surface. sits on top of the leak there, robin. if this works bp plans to deploy a second smaller dome to deal with a second leak, all of this remote control, too deep for any diver to be there. >> what fascinates me if it's a dome as you're moving through the water i would think that it makes it water because water is underneath it.

>> it creates that bit of water as well as if there's any air underneath but there won't be, because it will be pushed out. the difficulty is because of the pressure. they have tried this in history in the past, they've broken apart because of the concerns of pressure. you're talking about 2,000, 3,000 pounds per square inch, it could be very, very difficult to get this thing to the bottom. >> the deeper you get, the more pressure that you have. >> absolutely. >> what about the stuff on the surface? >> they're worried about that, too. we're using booms, obviously there's some concern about how well those boom also work. you can get an aerial view what have they're seeing on the ground, oil from before. the booms themselves, this is the concern. they're trying, of course, to continue to do those controlled burns on the surface. that's video from what happened yesterday. they're also deploying booms all over the gulf coast, we're talking about that earlier in the week, supposed to keep the oil from reaching land, that's the hope, but one boat captain here we've got for you, robin, is worried about high winds that

can actually send it over the top of the booms, we're talking about the oil here. >> what i see from these booms anything above a 15-knot wind, it's over. i mean, it's not going to serve its purpose. >> the other problem is how deep the oil is in the water. this is the view from an underwater camera here, the booms are only a few feet deep so a lot of the oil could slip underneath them as well. >> that's what we're seeing there, right? >> that's right. >> richard, thank you. don't you hate it when you're standing alone at the atm and asking for your money, nobody's there helping you, and yet they say you're going to have to pay $2 or more to get your money out. ticks you off, doesn't it? lawmakers want to reel in those big fees. jennifer westhoven? it's about time. >> you know, you may hate like the bailout but it does mean there's a window maybe where people are more open to regulation so anyway, tell me

what you think about this. i love this story because there's nothing i hate more than ending up maybe at an airport or something, and getting charged six bucks to take money out. you know it can happen, three bucks on each end. >> who is there helping you? >> exactly. they don't have to pay rent in the same way. it's a lot smaller for an atm than a bank. there's no teller, come on, it's a lot cheaper. how much does it cost the bank? one new york senator says it costs the bank 36 cents. you could be paying $2, $3, $4, $5, taken costs them 36 cents. senator shchumer would like to cap it at 50 cents. no comment from the banks but one atm threatens if that happens there would be fewer atms. in some ways i could see the atm maker getting a fee but my bank, what, they got an electronic

they believe the driver hopped out and ran when he that he was approaching a checkpoint. those are some of our day's top stories. good morning. it's sleepy, it's been a long week but it's friday. i'm robin meade. welcome. six members of a california family hid on their roof as a gunman rampaged through their house. a father, a son and a daughter were killed. their mom was shot two times. she is in the hospital. patrolling deputies heard gunfire and confronted a man with an assault rifle outside the house. they shot and wounded him. they say he is the daughter's former boyfriend. more details on the oil spill in the gulf and how it could affect people all over the country. correspondent richard lui, what should you do if you have maybe a vacation planned or maybe you're think being the condo that you have a time share with this summer? >> one allegderman in mississip says he wants to stress it's all usual in their beaches.

>> the water is fine, people out boating in the beaches. the oil is way out. >> he says that hotels, casinos and charter boat captains are reporting a steady increase in cancellations, though. "usa today" reports hotels in the new orleans area are actually busier than they were last year at this time. let me give you a number, 67% full compared to 53% the year before so we'll have to wait and see what the long-term impact is. we were there earlier in the week. the hotel is full up, they had no extra rooms. >> the seafood dealer there is on the gulf coast, people apparently are trying to stock up, so it's like everyone suddenly has been appetite for fish. >> they want their fish. they love their fish. they're stocking up on that, robin. one man actually bought 75 pounds of shrimp at one time. he says it will last him one year, just in case the shrimping season is ruined by the spill but one dealer says that bulk buying is driving up some prices. >> everybody started buying all

the shrimp because they were scared if this hit there would be no shrimp left so everybody added 50 cents to $15 1 a pound so it's causing up to go up on prices. >> his bigger worry is that this selling streak will dry up in the next few weeks and no one will be buying after that. >> you can imagine people are thinking it's okay to eat this. will it be later on? >> the restaurants are fuller because of that, too. >> richard, thank you. kentucky is now facing potentially historic blood iflo. the coast guard says the western part of that state will see its worst flooding in 200 years. the water could crest this weekend. much of the area is rural and people's farms have been flooded. rescuers are searching for two missing kayakers who disappeared in the fast-moving water. a nashville woman and her 4-year-old daughter were glad to know a swim coach when the water surrounded their house on saturday. after hearing the pair were trapped, the coach drove to their neighborhood and dove into the water. he swam to their house, got them

out, and with the little girl flinging to a floating ottoman. neighbors and rescuers spotted the ottoman and pulled everybody to safety. two people are missing in tennessee in the wake of the floods. nashville police are looking for 29-year-old danny tomlinson and 18-year-old daniel brown. tomlinson was last seen when his car ran into the high waters >> he was wonderful. he loved god. he was a wonderful son and wonderful brother. >> please, god, guide us, guide us. you know, if he is in the water, which i don't want to think that, just guide us there. >> to where he is. >> guide us to him for closure. >> a long list of country stars is trying to help nashville's recovery. bo bice, vince gill, keith urban, and many others helped out a nashville tv telethon last

night. they raised almost $2 million for flood relief. ♪ it's a long, long way >> it's so nice for people to sne step in. bo bice watches the show. a lot of people are also affected by the floods. my heart goes out to anybody who is still looking for a loved one. >> it's unimaginable. it really is, and the good news here is, robin, they're still dry and have been dry basically since sunday. heavy rain is coming in basically to the north, heavy at times. iowa in a nao northern indiana and indiana too, moving into michigan as well. you have a low pressure region just off to the west, moves over to the east. below it things are going to remain dry. we have the warnings for flooding west of nashville, nashville no longer in a flood warning but those warnings go all the way up to kentucky so that's something we're looking at. kansas city, dry, thundershowers roll to the east, now the line is headed into illinois and heavy at times from 80 stretching back to chicago.

one woman cope with a major loss. our top story today, wall street is coming off one of the worst days ever. well now investigators are looking at whether it could have all been caused by a typo! are you kidding me? one possibility is that a trader may have put in a sell order for $16 billion, with a "b" instead of $16 million. whatever the reason, the computerized selling then kicked in and the dow lost almost 1,000 points. it later recovered two-thirds of that loss, but my word. the big plunge caused sheer panic for some investors before the markets gradually bounced back. money expert jennifer westhoven is here to show you how in the world this happened. what's scary is, if that really was the cause. >> right. >> there's nothing to stop that, to thwart that from happening? >> well, i mean that's certainly what they're going to be looking into. you know that washington is already talking about this, robin. i wonder, in the past, i have frequently seen sometimes when it happens, there's an order

that's messed up, they halt trading in the one stock. that didn't happen. maybe this person didn't even realize that they made a mistake but if this is what happened, a possible human mistake, sending shock waves across markets, across the world, especially because it was in a stock in the elite dow 30, and the dow is so big, it's such a marker for so many other trades that things really spilled out of control. the dow was already off but only by about 200 points. when this happened, you can see it went into freefall there, i mean mayhem on the trading floors, by the way. this chart doesn't show you any of the chaos that was happening, in just minutes the dow was off almost 1,000 points, one of its biggest drops in history, more than $1 trillion lost on paper in u.s. stocks. if it was just on paper, that would be fine, but what happens is, people who look out for money want to protect you in case something happens and what if they don't look for one second so they have all of these programmed trades set up as

protection. well this set many of them off, and that's what he made things even a lot worse so they're going to be looking at this in washington. >> so you're saying those of us sitting here maybe if we have a 401(k) or mutual fund or something like that, we had no idea what was going on yesterday, we're at work, outside with the kids, we may have less money because of a stupid typo? >> well, here's the thing, possibly. i mean the good news is the market is likely recovering, in early trading the futures are still up but it is possible, but i'll tell you, robin, there will be a lot of looking into whether they "x" out many of the wild trades. >> like a wash. thank you very much. appreciate it, jennifer. nashville kids are going back to school today, and parts of downtown are reopening after horrible floods but you won't believe the mess they still have to deal with. the owner of this house says she was trapped inside, surrounded by water when she saw smoke. she and her dog were rescued by a guy on a jet ski seconds before the house exploded.

zoo. new in 40 minutes, we're going to tell you how the rhino got loose and you have to see the pictures of how they wrangled it back in. bp is lowering a huge metal dome 5,000 feet into the gulf of mexico trying to cap a leaking oil well. correspondent richard lui joins us now. do they have any idea about how hard it's going to be to do? >> very difficult here, robin. certainly not easy. they're going to lower this thing off of a barge, guide this dome using remote control gps trying to reach a point 5,000 below the surface. they'll then attach a hose to the top of the upside down funnel and pump the oil to a service barge. domes have been used for some 30 years. new technologies enabled faster construction and higher durability than the older ones that basically broke apart under

the extreme undersea conditions. you see it right there. as for the oil on the surface, bp is doing controlled burns. you can see the smoke coming from this one here. booms also continued to be deployed to block oil from reaching land but some of the choppy waters that we've been reporting on could make these floating walls ineffective. >> what i see from these booms, anything above a 15-knot wind, it's over. i mean, it's not going to serve its purpose. >> some of the booms only go inches under the water, which is good for defense against floating oil, which we can see in some of the pictures, deeper, four or five feet booms are better for dealing with what you may be seeing in the underwater video from the oil, underwaterborne oil or some other particulate matter under the water in the pictures. you can see some of the surface booms there. now you go to the atm to take out some money, and then they hit you with the big fee, $2,

maybe more than that, jennifer westhoven? >> have you ever taken money at an airport? >> yes, i have. >> it's like $6 or $7. >> $3, $5, if you go abroad it can cost you more. >> makes my head explode so i love the story. i want to come in and say all right, i'm a little biased so you make up your own mind but you know how your bank charges you to get your own money if it's at a different cash machine. i mean the machine charges you, the other bank charges you, your bank charges you. come on! does it really cost them that much? they're not paying a teller. they're not paying as much rent as for a whole bank. a new york senator says guess how much it costs those banks? about 36 cents. yet you can pay a whole lot more than that. senator chuck schumer of new york wants to cap atm fees at 50 cents. he says hey, banks, you'd still be making 28% profit. no comment from the banks but one atm maker threatens that if that happens there will be fewer atms out there. we'll see.

panic on wall street. yesterday lost 1,000 points in five points and quickly rebounded. what caused the roller coaster ride. after that the dow had its worst day in more than a year closing more than 3% down. crews are getting closer to getting a four story containment dome fitted over a blownout well in the gulf of mexico. oil company bp says once it is in place it could trap as much as 85% of the oil. a u-haul truck abandoned on

a bridge was likely stolen and believe a driver hopped out when he realized he was approaching a checkpoint. ♪ good friday morning . it's a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go g down. one more day, you can do it. kentucky is now facing potentially historic flooding. the western part of the state will see its worst flooding in 200 years. the water could crest this weekend, much of the area is rural, and people's farms have been flooded, meanwhile, rescuers are searching for two missing kayakers who disappeared in the fast-moving water. a nashville woman and her 4-year-old daughter were glad to know a swimming coach when water surrounded their house on saturday. after hearing the pair were trapped the coach drove to their neighborhood and dove right into the water. he swam to their house and got them out with a little girl clinging to a floating ottoman. neighbors and rescuers got canoes ready, spotted the

ottoman and pulled them to safety. more details on the oil spill in the gulf and how itcoaffect people all over the country. correspondent richard lui joins us now. what do you haveif you have a vacation planned in the summer? >> one alderman in mississippi stresses it is business as usual an their beaches. >> the waters are fine. people are out boating. people are on the beaches. the oil is way out. >> he also says hotels, casinos and charter boat captains are reporting a steady increase in cancellations but "usa today" reports hotels in the new orleans area are actually busier than they were last year at this time, 67% full right now compared to 53% last year. that's good news. so we'll just have to wait, i guess, and see what the long-term impact is at the moment, as we look at some of the folks that are down there right now.

>> i bet the people who are already booked are like i'm going before the oil comes. >> that's what they're saying. >> the seafood dealers on the gulf coast have been busier because people were like i want to eat the see seafood now. >> seafood is an important part of the country, one man actually bought 75 pounds of shrimp at one time. he says that will just last him a year. just in case the shrimping season is ruined by the spill, he wanted to stock up. one dealer says that bulk buying is driving up the prices, too. >> everybody started buying all the shrimp because they were scared if this hit there would be no shrimp left so everybody added 50 cents to $1 a pound so it's causing us to go up on the price. >> they're worried the selling streak will dry up in the next few weeks and no one will be buying after that. >> i wonder, because the selling streak is now while the oil hasn't come ashore and a lot of

brought the girl to taylor's hotel room against her will. they say davis had beaten the young girl, and handed her over to taylor, who sexually assaulted her. the girl sent text messages to her uncle who then went to the police. taylor's attorney says his client did not have sex or rape anyone and that he denies all the charges. >> my client was in town to work. he was going to play some golf with some friends and he was going to work and then this nightmare unfolded before him. lawrence taylor did not rape anybody. am i clear? >> very vocal and very straightforward. i didn't see any dancing around there. >> no dancing around, very, very convinced that his client is going to be freed of all charges and taylor will be back in court june 10th so we'll see then. >> when i mentioned that the impact was almost immediate on taylo taylor, nutrisystem has severed its relationship with lawrence taylor this morning.

good morning. i was just telling the crew, don't forget it's mother's day on sunday. but today it's friday. i'm robin meade. the stock market went into a freefall yesterday. at one point the dow was down nearly 1,000 and may it may have been because of a simple typo. are you kidding me? also ahead, neighborhood streets in nashville are lined with flood-soaked furniture. some country music stars have stepped up to help with the relief effort. a suspect led cops on a chase through the streets and through front yards. you'll hear what happened to the person in the passenger seat. first, though, new this

morning. a four-story containment dome is closer to fitting over a blown out well in the gulf of mexico. bp says once it is in place it could trap 85% of that oil that is gushing out and then funnel the oil up to a tanker. about 210,000 gallons of crude oil a day, did i say 210,000 gallons of crude oil a day has been spilling since the rig exploded last month. correspondent richard lui will show you how the dome is supposed to work and what happens if it does not. wall street is coming off one of its worst days ever. now, investigators are looking at whether it could have been caused by a typo. one possibility is that a trader may have put in a sell order for $16 billion, with a "b," instead of $16 million. well, whatever the reason, computer rise selling kicked in and kicked in hard and the dow lost almost 1,000 points and did

later recover two-thirds of that loss. you're kidding me. nuthing to stop something as simple as human error from making that happen. jennifer westhoven? >> that's the trouble when you involve humans, robin. they have human error. >> it's also the trouble when you involve an automated system because when something like that happe happens, there are automatic sells that go into place, correct? >> in a way, that's why people set up the automatic sells to take the human error out of the picture. they want to protect you in case something happens and make sure some of your money has been safe and in this case it may have been human error that started the whole thing off. because it was in a stock that was in the elite dow, only 30 stocks in that, it was a huge cascade effect. the dow was only at and we don't even know that's what happened. we don't know it was human error. we don't know where this trade

happened. but we do know that within minutes the dow was off almost 1,000 points. it didn't make any sense to people, that's why so many people are saying this had to be a mistake. more than $1 trillion lost on paper in u.s. stocks. now, basically, because it triggered all these program trades, even though maybe you didn't make any trades and you think y don't watch the stock market like that, please, i have a life going on here. i'm probably not affected. but it may be a mutual fund was affected or some place where you keep money was affected. most of the major exchanges say they are going to try to back out, exit out all those trades. >> it is going to try to make it a wash. >> the federal government is looking into it. >> oh, the feds are looking into it, okay. thank you very much, more on that. nashville kids are going back to school today after horrible floods, but the recovery is going to take so long for some people. the owner of this house, for

today and then i'll show you the forecast for what it looks like for the afternoon because winds are really not that bad, which is good news. here's how the oil shapes up for today. here's new orleans and you can see some of the oil ending right by the chandler sound and getting back across the delta and mississippi and stretching back off to the west. what about the weather as they drop that down into place today, doesn't look too bad. the winds are not quite as bad as they have been. still looking for a south wind at 10, 15 knots. so far this is all miles per hour. i have sewnly seen 13 miles per hour out of the south. not that bad of a weather day. that is cooperating. now, what's not cooperating is the heavy rain across iowa. warm front lifting up out of the south and below it, dry for most of the day and the flood warnings still posted for parts of kentucky and tennessee and line of showers and thunderstorms but it won't be as heavy as you had over the weekend. the heavy rain over the weekend

right now bp is lowering a huge metal dome 5,000 feet into the gulf of mexico trying to cap a leaking oil well. now, it is the first time that they've used this equipment so deep in the ocean. correspondent richard lui is joining us now. let's talk about the pressures the farther down there you get. >> the pressures get very high, robin. this is not going to be an easy process, what we want to get across. basically lowered off a barge you see here and guide this 100 ton dome trying to hit a point that is 5,000 feet below the sea surface, if it lands on the leak

it will attach a hose at the top of this dome and try to pump the oil to a surface barge that is on top. this technology has been around for some 30 years but new technologies have enabled construction of this dome to be faster and hopefully greater durability. certainly the pressure at this depth is enough to crush a submarine, robin. >> what? >> we're talking about very difficult situations here. >> so what are they doing, then, to get rid of the millions of gallons of oil that is already in the water? >> bp is still doing some control burns that we were talking about last week. this is video from one that happened yesterday and booms also continue to be deployed to block oil from reaching land or some of the marshlands there. but choppy waters could make these floating walls ineffective. >> what i see from these booms, anything above 15 knot wind, it's over. it's not going to serve its purpose.

>> the other problem here, robin, how deep the oil is in the water. this is under water video we got in overnight and what appears to be residue from the spill and most of the booms only go inches under water. so, that stuff could easily slip underneath, robin. >> thank you so much. even if the boom gets down there, not the boom, but the cap gets down there, there's still a lot of pressures and unknowns it seems like. not everyone is happy about the plans to build a new mosque in new york city. the main problem is where it's going to be. and then some students walked out of school protesting against their classmates who wore red, white and blue. ooh.

the ash cloud from iceland could still cause more problems. the irish aviation authority said the cloud is about 1,000 miles wide and growing by the hour. a few of our headlines we're talking about today. but first, how are you, doll? i'm robin meade. morning, sunshine. let's get you more details about the oil spill in the gulf and how it could affect people all over the country. correspondent richard lui is joining us. what should you do if you have a vacation planned or maybe this summer. >> the weather is getting good down there, robin. one alderman wanted to stress here, it's business as usual on their beaches. >> the watters are fine, people are out boating and people are on the beaches. the oil is way out. >> well, he says hotels, casinos and charter boat captains are reporting a steady increase in cancellations, but then "usa today" is reporting that hotels in the new orleans area are busier than they were last year

at this time. 67% full right now compared to 53% last year. so, robin, we have to wait and see how this long-term impact will affect the area. >> what if you love sea food and you're thinking that's how i'm impacted by this. i like to buy sea food and i bet a lot of it comes from there. >> one man loves it so much, robin, he bought 75 pounds of shrimp at one time. he says that will just last him one year, just in case the shrimping season is ruined by the spill. but one dealer says that bulk buying is driving some of the prices up. >> everybody started buying all the shrimp because they were scared of othis hit there would be no shrimp left. everybody added 50 cents to $1 a pound. >> now, the flip side, he said his bigger worry at the moment is this selling streak will dry up in the next few weeks and no one will be buying anything after that, robin. >> i wonder if that will be the case because people will be too

concerned about the oil being in the water that long. breaking news today, the government is saying the april unemployment rate rose, unfortunately, 290,000 jobs were created, the most in four years. so, you got a little of what sounds like bad news and a little what sounds like good news. the jobless rate has held steady since january, so, it ticked upward. but we do have some job creation. jennifer westhoven is crunching those numbers. i'd like for her to kind of make sense of it all and give us some context of in the big picture, what does it mean for your personal economy. british prime minister gordon brown wants to keep his job. earlier this morning he arrived at his office, no party won a majority of the seats in yesterday's election there. now, the leader of the majority party is chosen as the prime minister. now, brown says he wants to form a coalition with other parties. a group of military wives and moms got a first-hand look at what it's like to be a marine.

>> that felt so good. i shot a gun. >> yes, you did. they took part in the annual jane wayne day. it was especially important for one mom who lost her son in combat last year. >> brings me a little bit closer to what he experienced. i kind of feel like i'm sharing something with him now. >> well, about 30 marine units are sponsoring a jane w, yne day this year. a nashville woman and her 4-year-old daughter were glad to know a swim coach when water surrounded their house on saturday. after hearing the pair were trapped the coach drove to their neighborhood and jumped in the water. he put the little girl on a floating ottoman as she was clinging there. meanwhile, neighbors and rescuers had been getting canoes ready, so they spotted the ottoman and pulled everybody to safety. two people are missing in tennessee in the wake of the floods. one of them is 29-year-old danny

tomlinson. he was last seen when his car ran into high waters. >> he was wonderful. he loved god. he was a wonderful son and wonderful brother. >> please, god, guide us. if he is in the water, which i don't want to think that. guide us to him. for closure. >> i cannot imagine. the other missing man is 18-year-old daniel alexander brown. he disappeared while tubing on a creek on sunday. stories like this are still coming in. it's hard to believe, you know, almost a week after that big storm hit. do they still have some drying out time, bob? >> they do. good weather for the last couple days, robin. but the flood warnings are still in place, mainly west of the nashville area. you get immediately to the west and look at all these counties that are just aglow with flood

warnings and that's a good chunk of kentucky, too, all the way down through tennessee. dry for the next 12 to 18 hours, but later tonight, i'm thinking might get showers and thunderstorms breaking away and not a solid sheet of rain and the rain in place stretching through chicago and lower parts of michigan and zero in towards that chicago radar and brief little dry spot right now and rain off to the west and that cycles in later this morning calling for half inch of rain underneath those persistent downpours. get over to the east farther and most of the rain north of ft. wayne and indiana. later this afternoon if we see daytime heating at all, we don't need it. powerful cold front driving down right through the great lakes with area of low pressure to the north. moderate chance of severe thunderstorms today, ohio, indiana, and then a slight risk going all the way down into texas. gusty winds. that will be the main deal out of that. look at the rain switching over to snow for north dakota and it's coming down very quickly right now. six to ten inches of snow total.

later this evening that snow filters into northern wisconsin and u.p. of michigan. let me take you live to washington, d.c., looks like the east coast is dry today, but that cold front moves in later today. d.c. your high 72 to 75 and lots of sunshine and the winds really not that bad, but, who has the worst weather in the country today? going into a friday afternoon, the worst weather, it's got to be somewhere around the ohio valley, right? calling for columbus, ohio, to have the worst weather in the country this afternoon. severe thunderstorms, good chance of that. winds gusting to 45 miles per hour today. 55-mile-per-hour wind gusts tomorrow afternoon. severe weather not until this afternoon. columbus, ohio, worst weather in the country. nfl hall of famer lawrence taylor is facing a rape charge and is already hurting him financially. we'll dig deeper into the legal case against him. then a man used to make his bed on the streets and now he has a new house, thanks to help

over 21 lawrence taylor had sex with someone under 17. all you have to prove is that they had sex and the person was under 17. if you do that then he's guilty and he faces up to five years in jail. >> as far as i can tell, there are problems for both sides in this case, in terms of credibility and believability for both sides, basically. i mean f she were under the control of a pimp and they regularly get customers, i mean, does it look like they're targeting him? >> that's the allegation on taylor's side and from his people, that he's been targeted here. but the thing is, you still have to look at the statutory rape claim, that's a problem for him. that's a very big problem. now, on the other side, lawrence taylor had arrests and lots of criminal run-ins and that could be a problem if he's ultimately found guilty, there is a chance he can get probation but might look at his past record and say you have these past criminal

jobs, that is nuthing to sneeze at. that's real progress. much better than what we were doing. the first time we had two months of back-to-back job gains since the recession started but at the same time we're seeing some job creation, but it's not happening fast enough. still millions of americans who want to work, who are able to work, who can work but they just can't find any place to do it and that's what we see in the unemployment rate getting worse. so, improvement. things are still very fragile and that's why people are still concerned about what is happening in greece. thousands of miles away, but all our banking systems are together. another thing to keep together, these are two very separate surveys, very separate methodologies and that's why they don't move in lock step. that gives us a better picture of what is going on as opposed to a more simplistic one. that's how jobs are doing. a little better.

good friday morning to you. it is 9:00 eastern, but west coasters, i know, you're up very early. you're very impressive. i'm robin meade. here's what's going on. what in the world was up or down with the stock market. it went through a freefall yesterday. at one point it was down nearly 1,000 points. get this, it may have all been caused by a typo. also ahead, neighborhood streets in nashville are lined with flood-soaked furniture right now. some country music stars have stepped up to help with the relief effort. our top story, though, could one of wall street's worst days ever been caused by a typo?

it's what investigators are looking into anyway. one possibility is that a trader may have put a sell order for $16 billion with a "b" instead of 16 million. i guess that would be more zeros. but whatever the reason computerized selling kicked in and the dow lost almost 1,000 points and later recovered two-thirds of that loss. the big plunge, though, caused sheer panic for investors before the markets gradually bounced back. money expert jennifer west hoven is here now to show us how it happened moment by moment. isn't it hard to believe, i mean, one thing could send it that low? >> yeah. this was absolute chaos. even now wall street is pretty baffled trying to figure out exactly what happened. now, because this was a stock in the elite dow 30, it really caused all kinds of problems. the market already down on these fears about the greek economy, their spiraling violence on the streets there, that may be thousands of miles away and the

banking system is interconnected. the fear is that is spreading to other european countries. we were already in a situation where the dow was off 200 points and you had a lot of frayed nerves and then suddenly this spike, this freefall and that caused mayhem on the trading floors. panic. you do not want panic on the trading floors. the dow was off almost 1,000 points. more than $1 trillion lost on paper in u.s. stocks. but here's the thing, all because of a typo, right. because of all these programmed trades that are meant to safeguard your money may have made things worst. people may have lost money. some of the major exchanges are willing to back out many of those trades, robin, so that people don't lose their shirts because, basically, it was all a matter of completely wrong prices. i saw a story that said sam adams, at one time that company's stock was worth a penny. >> oh, my gosh! so they're trying to back utout

right now bp is lowering a huge metal dome 5,000 feet into the gulf of mexico trying to cap a leaking oil well. it is the first time they used this equipment so deep in the ocean. correspondent richard lui is joining us now. let's talk about the pressures the further down there you get. >> the pressures get very high, robin. this is not going to be an easy process, is what we want to get across. lowered off a barge that we see here and guide this 100-ton dome via remote control trying to hit a point that is 5,000 feet below the sea surface. now, if it lands on the leak, as you see here, it will attach a hose at the top of this dome and then will try to pump the oil to a surface barge on top. this technology has been around

for some 30 years, but new technologies have enabled construction of this dome to be faster and hopefully greater durability. certainly the pressure at this depth is enough to crush a submarine, robin. so, we're talking about a very difficult situation here. >> oh, my word. so, what are they doing then to get rid of the millions of gallons of oil that is already in the water. >> that's on the surface, yeah. well, bp is still doing some controlled burns we were talking about last week. this is video from one that we saw yesterday and booms also continue to be deployed to block oil from reaching land or some of the marshlands there. but choppy waters could make these floating walls ineffective. >> what i see from these booms, anything above a 15 knot wind, it's over. it's not going to serve its purpose. >> now, the other problem here, robin, how deep the oil is in the water. this is underwater video we got in overnight and what appears to be residue from the spill and most of the booms only go inches

know you don't either, especially after we had a very bad weekend for floods for some of oour viewers last weekend. bob, where now? >> same spot. this is from the rain leftover. that's how hard it was from saturday and sunday of last week. all that action still out there and these are all flood warnings western parts of kentucky and tennessee and extends into parts of indiana, too. most of that rain up to the north and that's where it will stay for the better part of the morning. break-away thundershowers late tonight and through tomorrow morning and right now the heaviest rain coming through northern illinois and getting into chicago. chicago are dar. it's not severe. just heavy rain and moving into northern parts of michigan and more rain around central and southern michigan and indiana you're drying out temporarily but with daytime heating and that cold front in place, a good risk of severe thunderstorms and we'll get them in that moderate area and main threat today, to me, appears like gusty winds and large hail. maybe an isolated tornado, but that's what it looks like.

middle of the trading day for the dow, down almost 1,000 points and came back and closed down 347 points. still the worst close we've seen in a year. look, the job's number we got this morning was particularly strong, 290,000 jobs added in the u.s. economy in the last month. traders aren't looking at that, robin, they're looking at the violent protests in greece and looking at the european debt crisis and realizing that that affects the global economy and that's why you have stocks off. what's also important to note, robin, this is a friday. the fact that this is a friday is critical because you go into the weekend as an investor not knowing what will happen around the world over the weekend and you're very hesitant to buy stocks and hold them over the weekend. that's why we're watching the numbers closely. dow was off 60 points and now off 31 points getting a little momentum and it looks like it will be a volatile trading day on wall street and a lot of questions about what happened. was there a glitch? did technology get in front of humans in trading?

reading. footballi conlawrence taylor is in trouble with the law, again. he was arrested in new york yesterday, charged with raping a 16-year-old girl. joe carter is here now with the detail. wow. >> yeah, robin. this is costing him some money already. he was a national spokesperson for nutrisystem. he is no longer a spokesperson for that company. this morning they say that based on the allegations, the severity of these allegations, they have decided to end their relationship with lawrence taylor, effective immediately. now, police say taylor had sex with an underage prostitute, a 16-year-old girl who had run away from her home in march. authorities say rashied davis, the young girl's pimp brought her to taylor's hotel room in suburban new york against her will. davis had beaten the young girl and handed her over to taylor who sexually assaulted her. later the girl sent text mess e messages to her uncle who then went to the police. earlier robin talked to ryan

smith from "in session." >> his lawyer came out swinging saying my client did not have sex and did not have any interaction with this woman and that is really taking a stand because in that case if you jump out there and say that immediately and ultimately it's proven wrong, that could harm his credibility, his lawyer's credibility. apparently lawrence taylor told him, i had nothing to do with this woman and i was not involved in any way. >> taylor will be back in court on june 10th. danny ainge is the president of basketball operations for the boston celtics and he was charged $25,000 for tossing a towel in the air. he was doing it to try to distract him. you can't do that. $25,000 is being charged for that towel throw there. pretty expensive stunt. the two teams play again tonight and we'll see if danny ainge gets involved. but eric byrnes used to play outfield for the seattle mariners. he was let go last week and now
