6:00 am
well, good morning. tuesday's off like that. i'm robin meade, and it's great to have you often. you know what? let me say that with feeling this time. morning, sunshine. it's great to see year you. here's what's going on. northwest, looking northwest toward highway 9, large elephant trunk tornado. >> yeah. that is a scary sight. twisters like that one hit parts of the midwest and what happened next is terrifying. a survivor of an oil rig explosion in the gulf of mexico is telling his story now and he believed he had no way to get out of there alive.
6:01 am
plus, running one marathon, that's a lot. but some people want to run 21 marathons in 21 days. can you imagine? first, though, the midwest could be in for another round of heavy storms today. >> here comes one right there. look at them. they're allover. >> deadly tornadoes hammered oklahoma and kansas yesterday. they toppled cars, power poles. ten are in critical or serious condition. rescuers are searching 30 square miles now looking for any victims. >> tomorrow our response will look a little different. we'll be actually moving into communities with our emergency response vehicles. our volunteers will be going through each community making sure that the first responders along with the residents have enough to eat and have stuff to drink so that they can continue their long response and their recovery efforts in the

community. well, oklahoma, hail the size of tennis balls smashed homes. we were sent in this video. a truck stop off of i 40. people huddled in school coolers in restrooms praying as the storm pulled the roofs off and hiding in restrooms. the storms also blew through kansas. one man in arkansas said trees were snapg and furniture was blowing across his yard. another couple said they were so grateful to be alive. >> everybody's okay, nobody got hurt, no accidents. >> the only complaint. we didn't have insurance. that's the only complaint. >> no complaints. >> we are alive and we're fine. >> in a few minutes bob's going to show you where the worst weather is expected today. more on the way. you know, a change in winds could push oil from the gulf of

mexico to the louisiana coast but the state's governor says they're trying to keep it away from the land. 11 people aboard the rig are presumed dead. one survivor said the blast woke him up. >> when i saw the derrick on fire, i knew that there was no way we were putting that fire out. i knew we were more than likely going to abandon the rig. i'm still kind of in shock. i just didn't expect to see that. it just hit me in my stomach. i just kept thinking, there's no way we're going to get off of here. we're all dead. >> what a horrible thought. we have brand-new video underwater of that leak. first, though, casey anthony's lawyers are going to find out today if she's going to face the death penalty if convicted of killing her daughter. the judge ruled that the jurors will be from somewhere other than orlando and he'll sequester them and put them under a gag
6:04 am
oefrmtd anthony has pleaded not guilty. if you were afraid to look at your retirement plan last week when they tanked, maybe it's good to look now. >> after what was terrifying last week with an almost 1 th n 1,000-point in the dow, it starts out 10,785, not quite back to 11,000 yet, but a huge step back up, and a lot of this relief came because we found out that europe is going to have a trillion dollar bailout plan, and it's kind of like, look, nobody like as bailout, but for them to hold their nose and do it, the hope is you've heard all about the problems in greece, you've seen some of the riots going on with the economic problems, the fear was that was going to turn into a domino effect. and if it hit all of europe, that would hit us too. so a bailout for them is good
6:05 am
for us. back to you. >> the markets loved it yesterday. hey, thank you very much. >> the families of the three american hikers being held in iran will get a chance to visit them. iran's media quotes the foreign minister as saying iran made the decision on humanitarian grounds. one hiker's mom says the families have not gotten official word about that, but they are ready to go. the families say the hikers crossed iran's border by mistake last year. there are merit badges and then there is. this this girl got a bronze cross life-saving award. she was at a pool party last summer when a 3-year-old boy who could not swim jumped in the water. she said his face started turning red. >> so i rent back into the water and bounced off the floor and pushed him up. i hadn't had any training yet. it was just something that -- you know, that i had to do. >> thanks to baughn, adults got

of severe weather in red. mainly looking at a tornado threat around lower parts of missouri and back into kansas. that's what you're looking at for this afternoon. again, it's later this afternoon. look at the heavy rain coming around areas like indianapolis. that's sparking off thundershowers. you're getting rain out of aurora, stretching into the city. we're going to get air traffic delays in the great lakes and the northeast. we'll talk about that, robin, coming up in about a half hour. you know what? yesterday's winner of up to speed with robin meade contest is -- is -- do we have a drum roll? kel kelly of west virginia. kelly get thes an autographed photo and a morning express robin meade bath robe but hers is going to have a national nascar logo as well. the grand price is a trip to the nascar race in sonoma,

6:13 am
then the second one is trans-ocean will put it back on the bp saying it relied on the oil rig operators and also place some of the blame on haliburtoh. haliburton will say it did the work to bp's specifications. that's some of the preview to look forward to. >> you know what's maddening? there's all this blaming and finger-pointing, and yet the oil is still gushing out. >> and there's the people that are still affected. we'll talk more about that in 30 minutes. >> richard, thank you. you know, your daughter's costume jewelry could be made of a toxic metal, so there is a recall this morning of thousands of bracelets from a pretty popular retailer, and jennifer westhoven has more about this, a recall from claire's. >> this is like a follow-on story, robin, from a story we talked about a few months ago. the big story then was a medial outlet, the associated press,

6:15 am
we're talking about kids' jewelry and that's what we test and that's what there are laws for. what about your adult metal jewelry? they don't test that. it's just as likely it is in there too. >> you know the scary thought about the metal, too, and then economical economically, it's not like you're going to buy your kid real jewelry, they're going to lose it anyway. so what other choice do you have other than to take it all away. >> you know how little kids put it in their mouths, it's especially zwrienc especially. >> two stores got attacked with fire bombs just as a local government considers new regulations. >> and these new soldiers are running and running and running for a good cause. you're going to hear the important message that they're trying to get out. communities. industry. energy. her. this. lives. how ? by bringing together... information. ... people ...

casey anthony is due in court in about 20 minutes now. her lawyers will try to argue that she will not get the death penalty, if she is convicted of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. "in session" host ryan smith joins us now. it must be hard for a lawyer to go, no, my client's not guilty, but if you find them and they are, let's not put them on the death penalty. >> it's very hard. but that is the nature of the death penalty case. you're looking at it and saying if she is found guilty, this is what we want or don't want. today is a big day because they're arguing five different
8:41 am
motions. i don't want to say novel, but interesting. one is that the imposition of the death penalty, trying to preclude it because of ogender biases. because of casey anthony's lifestyle and what you see out there in the pictures and all that that they're saying a man similarly situated but would not be subject to the death penalty. another motion that is big powerful motion a bad faith motion. they're basically saying this, it goes back to this, robin. in the very beginning the prosecution said they're not going to pursue the death penalty and the defense is saying once you found out we got $200,000 from a media outlet you saw this was the kind of money we had and you wanted to deny casey anthony the ability and therefore you filed it in bad faith. this is the second time they're arguing this. >> supposed to be about the pictures of her partying and the judge really never made a decision on that. >> he's putting it off. he will deal with it on a
8:42 am
case-by-case basis. for each and every picture, what do you want to include and what do you not want to include and what's the reason? is it relevant? that's a ways away. >> does anybody appear to be ahead right now, either side whether we're talking about motions or hearings. >> this guy really knows how to run a courtroom. very organized courtroom right now and right now it used to be all about the defense and the prosecution and right now about setting a tone. the defense is getting some of the motions they want, but not doing poorly and the prosecution is kind of hanging in there. but today is the big day. the defense, if they can be successful in taking the death penalty off the table, that's a huge win but a bit of a long shot right now. >> ryan smith, thank you so much. a 10-year-old south carolina girl just got the bronze cross life-saving award from her girl scout troop. isabel brawn was at a pool party last summer when a 3-year-old boy nearly drowned. >> so, i went back into the water and pushed him up.

8:44 am
was, but now i know it's the place to be. >> earlier said, do we have to explain what victory lane is? and i like you because you go, i don't, i don't know what victory lane is. you go into the store, but, honey, she knows what an instant rebate is. you geto the store and you say great price until you notice after mail-in rebate. don't you give me that mail-in rebate stuff, jennifer. >> a lot of us, you take it and you put it in a drawer and you keep looking at it and where is the receipt? a lot of people never end up getting that money. a lot of retailers want you to get your rebate right there on the form instead of looking at forms at home and waiting months to get the check in the mail. frankly, did you know this, this is kind of a dirty little secret. many manufacturers are counting on you forgetting about it. half of rebates are never redeemed because of all the paperwork involved. in rhode island and connecticut, you may be thinking, what?
8:45 am
i always get my rebate right there. something that is being looked at in the new jersey legislature. happening today in washington. major chiefs on wall street heading to washington as the heads of the major stock markets, the nyse and nasdaq are going to capitol hill because they're trying to answer some questions about what the heck happened last week in the terrifying plunge on wall street. now, really, this is still something of a mystery to wall street, an enigma. a lot of people looking at different pieces of information to figure out what happened. they're going to talk about what they know, what they don't know in some ways, right? yesterday there was some agreement of a new agreement of circuit breakers to make it kind of uniform craacross the differ markets. right now they're handled differently and some people think that could have been behind the mass chaos last week. playing in baseball's all-star game is a big honor. why a u.s. senator wants the players to boycott. and there's a piece of good
