plus, running one marathon, that's a lot. but some people want to run 21 marathons in 21 days. can you imagine? first, though, the midwest could be in for another round of heavy storms today. >> here comes one right there. look at them. they're allover. >> deadly tornadoes hammered oklahoma and kansas yesterday. they toppled cars, power poles. ten are in critical or serious condition. rescuers are searching 30 square miles now looking for any victims. >> tomorrow our response will look a little different. we'll be actually moving into communities with our emergency response vehicles. our volunteers will be going through each community making sure that the first responders along with the residents have enough to eat and have stuff to drink so that they can continue their long response and their recovery efforts in the

community. well, oklahoma, hail the size of tennis balls smashed homes. we were sent in this video. a truck stop off of i 40. people huddled in school coolers in restrooms praying as the storm pulled the roofs off and hiding in restrooms. the storms also blew through kansas. one man in arkansas said trees were snapg and furniture was blowing across his yard. another couple said they were so grateful to be alive. >> everybody's okay, nobody got hurt, no accidents. >> the only complaint. we didn't have insurance. that's the only complaint. >> no complaints. >> we are alive and we're fine. >> in a few minutes bob's going to show you where the worst weather is expected today. more on the way. you know, a change in winds could push oil from the gulf of

mexico to the louisiana coast but the state's governor says they're trying to keep it away from the land. 11 people aboard the rig are presumed dead. one survivor said the blast woke him up. >> when i saw the derrick on fire, i knew that there was no way we were putting that fire out. i knew we were more than likely going to abandon the rig. i'm still kind of in shock. i just didn't expect to see that. it just hit me in my stomach. i just kept thinking, there's no way we're going to get off of here. we're all dead. >> what a horrible thought. we have brand-new video underwater of that leak. first, though, casey anthony's lawyers are going to find out today if she's going to face the death penalty if convicted of killing her daughter. the judge ruled that the jurors will be from somewhere other than orlando and he'll sequester them and put them under a gag

rescuers are searching across oklahoma and kansas this morning looking for victims after yesterday's storms. do you see this tape? tornadoes hammered both states, toppling cars, snapping power poles, and ripping houses apart. five people were killed, 10 people are in critical condition and the midwest could be in for another round today. i-35 was closed after winds overturned semis and blocked all of tlaens. homes were damaged and there were widespread power outages. 65,000 homes and businesses are still without power. a senior administration official says that the times

square bomb suspect went to pakistan looking for help to carry out an attack. white house advisers say that faisal shahzad was planning to stage some kind of attack when he met with pakistan taliban members. they say they now have evidence of the taliban's involvement. the company says a glitch allowed users to add anyone they wanted as a follower of their tweets even celebrities. for about an hour, most accounts showed zero followers while the problem was fixed. that will fix you. suddenly you have no followers. those are some of the headlines we're following this morning. how are you doing? it's very early. i'm always impressed you're up sko early. i'm robin meade. all along the gulf coast, crews are trying to trap more than 4 million gallons of oil from the oil leak, and the oil keeps leaking out. more than 2 million gallons are gushing out a day.

bp is scrambling to come up with other ways. cleaning up the oil is going to take massive amounts of man pour and correspondent richard lui joins us now. those, sadly as you look at it, could be new jobs. >> yes. there's an opportunity to take something that's bad and turn it into a little good, robin. people that lost their jobs in the recession, what they're hoping to do is this oil spill may help them turn things around, and the line was out the door yesterday in biloxi, mississippi. >> some kind of job with environmental clean-up, hopefully it will lead to something permanent because i've lived here for 40 years. there are armies that work for the environmental contractors, specific to mississippi, though, officials there are saying nearly 2, 300 people have asked about these jobs. the priority will go to gulf coast residents and they have to

get 40 hours of hazmat training before they can start. of course, robin, it will have to wait until -- they're saying this in their outreaches -- until the oil actually hits ground. so that's when they'll actually be deployed. so there will be a wait before that happens. >> you can see a lot of people apparently want to help. thank you so much. britain's prime minister gordon brown will be stepping down. he'll be out at the end of september. his party came in second in last week's election, but neither the lab bore or the conservative parties won a majority in parliament, so they're talking with another smaller party about their options. a former sunday school teacher has admitted killing an 8-year-old girl in california. melissa huckabee pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in a deal with prosecutors. she could get life in prison without parole when sentenced. investigators would not say how

but looking at the video it looks like a multivortex tornado where you have several spinning around each other. you can see one on the right. there's one off to the left as well. it's just a dangerous situation. 37 tornado reports yesterday. you see them dancing around each other. perfect. there you go. multiple vortex. unbelievable. we still have the rain from yesterday, stretching into wisconsin, michigan, back into minnesota. ohio later this morning. light showers out this already. the slight chance of the weather, it's a new round. the good news is the jet stream and the energy and all the humidity won't quite phase as well as it did yesterday. so i'm not looking for a huge tonight outbreak like we had yesterday. we might see an isolated tornado or two, lower parts of missouri into kansas. that's going to be later this afternoon into the evening hours. not a morning event, just like yesterday. it's going to pop up sometime in the mid afternoon. it gets up to the north a little bit farther.

hello. look at you. good morning, sunshine. bedhead and all. that's okay, we like you just the way you are. i'm robin meade. here's what's going on newswise. looking northwest, looking northwest toward highway 9. large elephant trunk tornado. >> yeah. that is a scary sight. twisters like that one hit parts of the midwest. and what happened during the storms is terrifying. a survivor of the oil rig explosion in the gulf of mexico is telling his story. he believed that he had no way to get out of there alive. tiger woods is losing somebody on his team.

not on his family, but somebody who played a big role in his life. first, though, the midwest could be in for another round of heavy storms today. the deadly tornadoes hammered oklahoma and kansas yesterday. they toppled cars, snapped power poles, and ripped houses apart. at least five people were killed in oklahoma. ten are in critical or serious condition. the rescuers are searching 30 square miles now looking for any other victims. the storms also blew through kansas. one man in arkansas city said that the trees were snapping and furniture was blowing across his yard. another couple said that they were grateful to be alive. >> everybody's okay, nobody got hurt. no animals. >> the only complaint, we didn't have insurance. that's the only complaint. >> no complaint. >> we are alive, and we're fine. while the rescuers are combing through the damaged areas, more severe weather could be in store for the midwest. so bob is here with a little bit more on that forecast. did i hear you say earlier it's

maybe -- some of the same areas but a different system? yeah, it's a different one. the one right now -- you can see the tornado on the side of our page right there. that's on our facebook page. we have one storm exiting away, across the great lakes. there's another behind it coming off the rocky mountains. there's snow, rain involved. later today you'll see this rain pull away and a new round of severe weather is a possibility. mainly a spot we put in red. the good news, robin, is this -- the jet stream, the moisture, all the energy not phasing together as well as it did yesterday. not a widespread, severe outbreak today. it just looks like we'll see scattered showers and thunderstorms develop this afternoon. some could produce a tornado, especially lower parts of missouri back into kansas. and i'll update you on that in a couple of minutes. >> thank you. a change in the wind -- speaking of weather -- could push the oil from the leak in the gulf of mexico to louisiana's coast. the state's governor says they're trying to keep it away from the land. 11 people who were on board the oil rig that exploded are presumed dead. one of the survivors says the

blast woke him up. >> when i saw the rig on fire i knew there was no way to put the fire out. i knew we were going to have to abandon the rig. still in shock, i didn't expect to see that. it just hit me in my stomach. that's all i was thinking, there's no way we're getting off here. we're all dead. we have brand new underwater video of the leak. what you're seeing there. see more with richard liu in a few minutes. casey anthony's lawyers may learn today whether she'll face the death penalty if she is convicted of killing her daughter, caylee. it is one of the main orders of business at the hearing. yesterday the judge ruled that jurors will be chosen from somewhere other than orlando. he'll also sequester them and put the lawyers under a gag order. now anthony has pleaded not guilty. if you're afraid to look at your retirement plan after the stocks tanked, maybe you can look today. the stocks rocketed higher

yesterday. and our money expert, jennifer westhoven, is here. the big question was why. why did they love it at the beginning? you know, when you start to have wild swing like this, robin, then often in the next few days you're just going to have a kind of balancing out here. i could give you a why, but it's almost like it's going to happen anyway. if there's a good and a bad reason, we'll say that -- you know what i mean, it will just be the theme. really it's things tend to even out after you have a huge stampede like that. so yesterday the best rally a year for stocks. opening right out of the bell. today they're starting at 10,785, up 400. this morning the futures are down. it may be about 100 points, which normally would be a huge move. relative to the kind of moves we're seeing that shows that things are calming down. now yesterday's green arrows, well, look. there's a lot of love shall we say for the idea that europe is going to have a big bailout. and even though we say we hate

bailouts, we don't want to pay for them, it's seen as staunching this massive chaos that's going on. making sure that the problems that you've heard about in greece, you've seen some of the video from there, some of the violence happening with people worried about the economy. it's starting in some other countries, too. they want that contained with a bailout. so it won't turn into a domino effect that could end up hurting us all the way over here. we may be far away, robin, but all those banking systems are interconnected. >> very good. thank you very much, appreciate it. the families of three american hikers being held in iran will get a chance to visit them. iranian officials say that they made the decision on humanitarian grounds. one hiker's mom says that the families have not gotten official word about that, but they are ready to go. the families say that the hiker crossed iran's border by mistake last year. iran accuses them of being spies. check out this ireport video. it's out of oklahoma. hail the size of tennis balls. smashed windshields and damaged homes yesterday. now this is from the severe storms and tornadoes that hit

the area. ireporter rebecca barbado sent us in the video. that is going to do more than just hurt you if that hits you. look at that. >> huge. >> the larger the size of the hail means that many times that it got bounced back up into the atmosphere. for every time it bounces back up, the thicker it gets. hi, bob. exactly, yeah. if you cut a hailstone in half you'll see rings like a tree. that's how many times it went up and down. basically the up trap and the down trap of the thunderstorm. amazing. also you see it's that big, that hailstorm was supported by a wind that kept it suspended in the air. that's how high it was. it was pretty rough yesterday. we have video that's amazing, too, of a tornado starting to form. this is out of medford, oklahoma. a multivortice tornado. you see one, two, three dancing around each other. you see that, it is absolutely dangerous. those individual suction vortices what they call them, they do the most damage. you see them dancing around.

that was yesterday in medford, oklahoma. what's going on today? we're wrapping up from the rain yesterday, but it has boosted out quickly. now it's out of indianapolis, stretching into ohio, it gets into michigan, too. heavy at times around chicago. already have an air delay at o'hare, about an hour because of rain and poor visibility. that rain is edging to the east. you see it flashing around cincinnati. and then back up to areas like michigan getting decent rain. lower part of that state, that heads to detroit. we'll call for delays right there later on this morning, too. you get away from here, it's another cold start. freeze warnings, all the areas shaded in purple. a good chunk of new york state. northern half of pennsylvania, parts of jersey getting into connecticut, massachusetts, rhode island. all seeing temperatures that are on the cold side for this time of year. 31 in albany, 41 at boston. you get outside of beantown, getting to the middle parts of massachusetts, the temperatures are well below freezing. a big, cold start for you guys. then you go to the west. here's our new storm system that produces that foul weather later this afternoon. still locked up over salt lake city with some rain, some snow.

the first time we've seen it at this angle. co correspondent richard lui -- people are wondering why three weeks later are we getting the video? >> reporter: b.p. has this h control of the robotic cameras. we've had videos from the surface and we have our own cameras of under water oil. this is a glimpse of oil spilling out of the well. can you see that cloudy background in the background. that dark cloud is the oil shooting into the water in the background. again, that's over 200,000 gallons a day. now here what it look like when it reaches land. that little black line there. louisiana officials just releasing photos of oil on the islands. the forecast for today, look at this right here. shows it's moving past the barrier islands to louisiana's main coast. it's moving farther west. that's sort of been the trend within the last week. you can see the potentially affected areas there in red. so that's a little bit more severe. we'll be watching that for you. we're also going to hear for the first time today from the

executives in charge of the companies responsible for operating the rig. senate hearings start in just a few hours. these are some of the key players that you might be want to be watching for as they do come to the microphones. first of all, we're expecting a classic case of the blame game between b.p.'s chairman, who will say the blowout preventer did not shut off the oil flow like it was supposed to. that equipment is owned by transocean. now, transocean's ceo, listen for him, he will put the responsibility back on b.p., saying the final word lies with the rig's operator. and he'll also point to halliburton for some of the blame. okay. and here's the third player. now halliburton was subcontracted by p.b. to seal -- by b.p. to seal that well in cement. halliburton's executive will say it did the work to b.p.'s specifications. a little advance of what's going to be happening today for you. oh, yeah, it's going to be a lot of finger pointing. a lot of this when we talk about it, whose fault is it. let's talk about this.

thousands of kids' metal bracelet being recalled because they have a toxic metal in them. sort of reminds us here, jen, of when we had those child's toys that had issues of other coatings. yeah, and you know, this came out, richard, it's fascinating to me. journalists said, you know, we think something's going on here. and they were the ones doing some of the testing. a few months ago, a media outlet, the associated press, tested kids' metal jewelry. and they found a lot of it had the toxic poisonous metal cadmium. it's not even against the law because people assume, well, we know that it is so poisonous, nobody would ever put this in kids' jewelry, but there it was. walmart recalled this jewelry a few months ago. when this came out, claire's pulled what we're talking about, these bracelets off the shelves. but after the testing, we've gotten the formal recall to tell you about. the jewelry being recall sudden called best friends charm bracelet sets. they are made in china. more information is at cnn.com/robin in case you have

rescuers are searching across oklahoma and kansas looking for victim of yesterday's storms. tornadoes hammer both states, toppling cars, snapping power poles, and ripping houses apart. at least five people were killed. at least ten people are in serious or critical condition. and the midwest could be in for another round today. on the kansas-oklahoma border, i-35 was closed after the winds there overturned semis and blocked all of the lanes. you can see homes were damaged, and there were widespread power outages. 65,000 homes and businesses are still without power. a bug that popped up on

twitter appears now to be fixed, but the company says a glitch allowed users to add anybody they wanted as a follower. even, say, a celebrity. for about an hour yesterday, ben, most accounts showed zero followers while the problem was being fixed. you go from choosing whoever you want to having nobody. those are some of our headlines today. you always have us to provide you with news in the morning. so i'm robin meade. thank you very much for watching. so the oil spill in the gulf coast has now grown to an estimated four million gallons, and cleaning up all of that is going to take some major manpower. correspondent richard lui joins us with that angle. that there may be jobs from this. there could be a silver lining here, robin. they're going to need help to clean up any potential oil spill that does hit the land there. people now who lost their jobs in the recession, what they're hoping for is that this thing will turn things around a little bit for them. and the line was out the door yesterday in biloxi,

mississippi. >> some type of job with the environmental cleanup, hopefully it will lead to something permanent with an environmental company because i've lived here for 40 years, and i do care about our gulf coast also. >> mississippi officials saying that nearly 2,300 people have asked about the jobs. the priority going to gulf coast residents, and they do have to get 40 hours of hazmat training before they start. they have to wait until the oil spill hits ground before they will be deployed and employed. >> thousands of other jobs in fishing and tourism are at risk. those could come to an end at least temporarily. what has been the reaction on that front to the spill? >> it's been devastating for so many. we'll talk about one restaurant owner in the mississippi coast. he's saying he's angry the oil spill is ruining his family avenues way of life. not just a livelihood but way of living. two brothers who run a seafood business nearby say they still don't want the drilling to stop right off the coast there.

>> just because something of this nature happens in the oil industry, it's not a black eye on the entire industry. it's really not a blackeye on b.p. it's an unfortunate accident and we're going to have to learn from it. >> we have to drill. there's no way we can get off of oil in this country in the next 25, 30, 50 years. green is great, but we can't just turn off the spigot. we have to have the oil. >> a way of life that could end for one generation. but they're saying they are still supporting oil. what a dynamic there on the coast. they also stressed that though b.p. should pick up the tab for a thorough cleanup. so they want that to be paid for by them, robin. >> richard, thank you very much. a former sunday school teacher has made a surprising admission about the death of an 8-year-old girl in california. melissa huckabee pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. this was yesterday in a deal with prosecutors. now she could get life in prison without parole when she's sentenced next month.

now investigators are still not saying how or why she killed little sandra cantu, allegedly. she was friends with huckaby's daughter. the white house is putting more money into drug treatment. they say it's for committee programs, drug screening, and expanded treatment. a group pushing the change drug policy says that there's still too much focus on arresting and prosecuting the users and not enough on reducing demand. a phoenix official warn that the city could lose out on $90 million over the next five years. now he says that it would be from the fallout from arizona's controversial, new immigration law. four group have already canceled their events. other groups also have concerns about the law. supporters say that the law is needed to curb crime and illegal immigration in that state. several tea party and conservative groups say that they will host rallies in arizona to support the new immigration law. a senior administration official says the times square bomb

suspect went to pakistan looking for help to carry out an attack. white house advisers are saying that faisal shahzad was already planning to stage some kind of attack when he met with pakistani taliban members. they say that they now have evidence of of the taliban's involvement. "playboy" is covering up for the office. the magazine is making a safer work web site which it describes as "everything that you love about men's entertainment and the internet minus the stuff that will get you in hot water at the office." it's called the smoking jacket. get it, smoking gun, smoking jacket. but do not bring this to work. i'm going to have to see it to believe it. if they could send a copy just to make sure. >> just want to test. >> test to see what it's all about. i don't believe we still have storms in the midwest today. >> we. do we're cleaning up from action around oklahoma and kansas. robin, there were 37 reports of tornado. this weather brought to you by zyrtec. the slog of rain is over the great lakes, pulling into ohio, ready to get into western p.a., new york state, ontario, too. michigan getting covered with heavy downpours, as well. to the west, we still have a threat of severe weather this afternoon. not as big a threat as yesterday obviously. only a slight chance in areas we put in red. same kind of situation. warm front coming up from the south. you have surging moisture coming out of the gulf of mexico, too. little daytime heating is all it will take to get showers and thunderstorms rolling. good news about today, not as much energy in the atmosphere and jetstreams are not phasing up to get the real tornado outbreak that we had yesterday. so some potential good news there even though we'll probably see a few tornadoes in lower parts of missouri and kansas. but that won't be until this afternoon. we have a couple of hours to watch it. look at the rain around chicago. already have a delay now at

o'hare. more showers and thunderstorm riding away from indianapolis into n toward northern parts of kentucky and ohio. then up the line, the heavy rain is getting into detroit. let me take you live to detroit right now. you can see what the tower cam looks like. it's going to be gray, rainy off and on all day. the high temperature only about 50 degrees today. currently sitting at about 43. so gusty winds, heavy rain, anticipate delays at detroit if you're headed into that city. we'll have full details on that in a little bit, as well. down to the south, columbus, ohio, getting decent rain. you see it there. then to the east coast, temperatures are cold. starting out on another cold note. freeze warnings, all the spots you see shaded in purple, the blue shaded areas, frost advisories. that includes philadelphia, includes most of new jersey, parts of delaware and maryland, too. get a load of some of these temperatures. right now, 44 in new york. but only 31 in albany. and the dark shade of blue, all these temperatures are well below freezing. so we're talking about the mohawk valley, the hudson valley, but warming up down to the south. today's the last real cold day. more on that in about a half-hour. >> look how chilly. >> yeah, and we're talking about mid-may already. yeah, that is cold for this time

good morning. 19 minutes to the hour. a reality tv star wish she was part of the so-called bling ring. alexis neiers will be going to jail for six months now after pleading no contest to a felony burglary charge. she's in the show "pretty wild" on the e network. as part of the plea deal she will not face charges for other burglaries tied to the ring. several hollywood celebrities were targeted by the burglars. police say that they have recovered about $3 million worth of stuff.

the suspects say they used online gossip sites to figure out when the celebs were not at home. among those targeted, orlando bloom, paris hilton, lindsay loh lohan. wow. what are you smirking at? just the idea of the underwear being stolen. at least it was valuable and not yucky stuff. >> she's talking about something she saw on tv. like an "entourage" episode. president obama's supreme court pick may have a confirmation fight coming in the senate. two republican senators are criticizing elena kagan's role in a dispute over gays in the military. in 2003, she tried to keep military recruiters from harvard law school. kagan opposed don't ask, don't tell and said that gays and lesbians should be able to serve openly in the military. one senator says that trying to block the recruiters may disqualify her. so you go into the store, you see a big, fat sale price,

delta airlines is apologizing to a canadian couple for losing their dog. the couple found paco while they were on vacation in mexico. so cute. they say they gave him to the airline employees to put him on the flight home. but they never saw him again. according to delta, the dog escaped from its kennel before they could get him on the plane. paco's owner are heartbroken. >> dog was let down by us, i feel like, because it trusted us as its caretaker to safely take it to where it needed to be and that we would be with it. and we trusted delta, and they let us down. >> well, delta released a statement saying "our staff have

conducted exhaustive searches to locate the dog. delta offers its sincere apologies that it has been unable to recover the dog." delta goes on to say that it's offered to reimburse the couple for all their expenses associated with the dog. poor things. you know some lawmakers are urging major leaders to boycott next year's all-star game in arizona because of a recently passed immigration law. here's rafer with more on that. good morning. good morning, robin. and i think that this boycott could actually happen. 27% of major league players are latino, and the head of the players union has already spoken out against the law. well, now democratic senator robert menendez from new jersey wants the players to have a full-fledged boycott of next year's all-star game scheduled to be played at chase field in phoenix. now, this kind of thing is not unprecedented. the nfl pulled the 1993 super bowl out of arizona when the state didn't recognize martin luther king day. by the way, the law's supporters say it could help fight illegal

you will need your 3-d glasses for playboy's next issue. the midwest could be in for another round of deadly storms today. deadly tornadoes hammered oklahoma and kansas yesterday. they snapped power poles and ripped houses apart. at least five people were killed in oklahoma, ten are in critical or serious condition. rescuers are searching 30 square miles now looking for any other victims. >> there comes one right there. look at them, they're all over. >> oh, my gosh. yeah, two in one shot there. oklahoma hail the size of tennis balls damaged windows and homes. now, at a truck stop out of i-40 people huddled in the coolers and in the restrooms praying as the storm tore off the roof and blew out the windows and also

overturned a semi. now, the storms also blew through kansas. one man in arkansas city said that trees wurb snapping and the furniture was blowing across his yard. another couple said they were grateful to be alive. >> everybody's okay, nobody got hurt, no animals. >> we didn't have insurance. that's the only complaint. >> no complaint. >> we are alive and we are fine. >> in just a few minutes, bob will show you where we're going to get possibly an outburst of bad weather again today. a change in wind, speaking of weather, could push oil from the leak in the gulf of mexico to louisiana's coast now. the state's governor says they're trying to keep it away from the land. 11 people onboard the oil rig when it exploded are presumed dead. now, one survivor says that blast woke him up. >> when i first woke up, i woke up to an explosion. i didn't know that's what it was. i kind of turned and sat on the edge of my bed and i sat there

and waited to see if there was another sound or what the deal was and there was a lot bigger explosion after that. >> we have brand-new underwater video of that lake, that's what you're seeing there. you'll see more of that with correspondent richard lui in a couple minutes. the families of three american hikers being held in iran will get a chance to visit them. iranian officials said they made that decision on humanitarian grounds. one hiker's mom said the families have not gotten any official word about that, but they're ready to go. the hikers crossed iran's border by mistake last year and iran accuses them of being spies. if you were afraid to look at your retirement account when the stocks tanked last week, you might want to do it this week. so, apparently, they like the plan to stop other european countries from going through what greece went through. >> in some ways, robin, if there had been any good little headline,ia would have heard

that for the reason for the big rally. shooting up right out of the gate at the opening bell because stocks are trying to come back from what happened last week when the dow, at one point, was off more than 1,000 points. today we're starting at 10785 when the opening bell rings on wall street in just about 90 minutes. it was up 404 yesterday. you know, partly on word about this relief package happening in europe. if you think about how much we americans hated having a bailout, guess what, they hate it, too. but you can see, right, our markets see this as a good thing because it means what's happening in europe is not necessarily going to turn into a domino effect that comes here. when you think about the pictures you were seeing in greece, that won't necessarily happen. but, still, robin, very volatile trading and things justine out and they tend to do this for a while after a big drop like that. >> always fun when it goes up and not so much the other way. thank you.

a former sunday schoolteacher has made a surprising admission about an 8-year-old girl. melissa huckabee pleaded guilty. she could get life in prison without patrol when she's sentenced next month. investigators will not say how or why she killed little sandra cantu. she was friends with huckabee's daughter. five minutes after the hour, we potentially could see more severe weather today. bob, do you think it will be as bad as yesterday? >> not as bad as yesterday. 37 reports of tornados and probably see just a handful today. the reason why is things arant phasing like they did yesterday for severe weather and that's, obviously, good news. incredible video we got from yesterday in oklahoma. look at this tornado forming and look at all the little tornadoes running around. multiple vortex tornado and each one of these things is called a suction vortsie.

the individual tornadoes that do most of the damage. a long time ago they thought it was the devil with his legs kicking around. it looks like a guy running around kicking stuff over. that was one of 37 reports yesterday. just absolutely amazing stuff coming right out of severe studios. thank you for that stuff. still mopping up from the rain from yesterday. stretches into west virginia, too. all rain heavy at times and minnesota getting some right now. later today as that storm exits another one comes off the rocky mountains and most of the energy locked up over the four corners for the afternoon. some of it will eject into the middle part of the plains and rise in the temperatures and humidity, too. watching suvevere weather threa here today. lower parts of missouri and kansas. more about that in a little bit, rob. a lot of oour oviewers have been sharing their experience about the storms today. deborah is far from home and

the oil reaches land. you can see that little stripe right there. louisiana officials just rele e releasing photos. it shows moving past the barrier islands on the right-hand side with little bit of red spots there moving more west and, of course, a number of red spots here, robin, that's incrosing as we take a look at the delta there. >> it looks like the oil and the coast will be interfacing more, basically. we'll hear from the first time today from executives in charge of a number of different companies apparently responsible for different angles of this operation. so, the senate hearings start in less than two hours and i expect a lot of fingerpointing. >> a lot of this and a lot of heated discussion, no doubt. the old blame game going on. bp's chairman will say this that the blowout preventer did not shut off the oil flow like it was supposed to. that equipment is owned by transocean. now transocean ceo who will also be there will put the

responsibility back on bp. saying the final word lies with the rig's operator bp and he'll also point to halliburton for some of the blame. okay, that's the third person you should be listening to today if you're listening to this. subcontracted to seal the well pipe in cement. halliburton's executive says it did the work to bp's specifications. a lot of shouting, robin. >> fingerpointing is expected while the oil is still leaking. richard, thank you. that's frustrating. it was like a soap opera moment, wasn't it? locking eyes. it has been a rough year for toyota with run away cars and recalls but it has not hurt their bottom line. their profits. money expert jennifer westhoven is here. >> they must have made some right moves to take advantage of what was going on in the world.

casey anthony is due in court in about 20 minutes now. her lawyers will try to argue that she will not get the death penalty, if she is convicted of killing her 2-year-old daughter, caylee. "in session" host ryan smith joins us now. it must be hard for a lawyer to go, no, my client's not guilty, but if you find them and they are, let's not put them on the death penalty. >> it's very hard. but that is the nature of the death penalty case. you're looking at it and saying if she is found guilty, this is what we want or don't want. today is a big day because they're arguing five different

motions. i don't want to say novel, but interesting. one is that the imposition of the death penalty, trying to preclude it because of ogender biases. because of casey anthony's lifestyle and what you see out there in the pictures and all that that they're saying a man similarly situated but would not be subject to the death penalty. another motion that is big powerful motion a bad faith motion. they're basically saying this, it goes back to this, robin. in the very beginning the prosecution said they're not going to pursue the death penalty and the defense is saying once you found out we got $200,000 from a media outlet you saw this was the kind of money we had and you wanted to deny casey anthony the ability and therefore you filed it in bad faith. this is the second time they're arguing this. >> supposed to be about the pictures of her partying and the judge really never made a decision on that. >> he's putting it off. he will deal with it on a

for losing their dog. the couple found paco when they were on vacation in mexico and they loved him and they gave him to airline employees to put him on a flight so they could take him home, but they never saw him again. according to delta, the dog escaped from his kennel before they could get him on the plane. paco's owners are heartbroken. >> dog was let down by us, i feel as its caretakers to safely take it to where it needed to be and we would be with it. we trusted delta and they let us down. >> delta released a statement saying that our staff have conducted exhausted searches to locate the dog. delta offers its sincere apologies that it's been unable to recover the dog. delta goes on to say it has offered to reimburse the couple for all of the expenses associated with the dog. a reality tv personality admits that she was part of the so-called hollywood of bling ring. alexis niers will go to jail six

months after pleading no contest to a felony burglary charge. as part of the plea deal she will not face charges for other burglaries tied to the ring. several hollywood celebs were targeted by the burglars. police say they have recovered about $3 million worth of stuff. the suspects say they used online gossip sites to figure out when the celebs were not at home. among those targeted, orlando bloom, paris hilton and lindsay lohan. new york state is resorting to drastic measures to save money but those plans are facing a new challenge. nobody got hurt when this truck got stuck under an underpass or an overpass, but the cargo was shaken. glasses. that's what you're going to need if you want to see the latest issue of "playboy," 3-d. first, the midwest could be in for another round of heavy storms today. deadly tornados hammered oklahoma and kansas yesterday. we just learned there may have been as many as ten tornados in oklahoma alone. they toppled cars, snapped power poles and ripped houses apart. at least five people are with killed in oklahoma. ten are in critical or serious condition. the rescuers are still searching for any other victims. >> here comes one right there. look at them, they're all over. >> yeah, all around you. >> the storms also blew through kansas. these pictures are from carla westerman who shot them from her house. one man in arkansas said the trees were snapping and furniture was blowing all across his yard. another couple said they're grateful just to be alive.

yesterday. maybe just a few isolated tornados in missouri and kansas. more on that in just a couple of minutes, robin. you know, wind could push oil from the oil leak in the gulf of mexico to louisiana's coast, but the state's governor is saying they're trying to keep it away from the land. 11 people who were on board the oil rig that exploded are presumed dead, but one survivor says the blast woke him up. >> when i saw the derrick on fire, i knew that there was no way we were putting that fire out. i knew we were more than likely going to abandon the rig. i was still kind of in shock, i didn't expect to see that. it just hit me in my stomach. that's all i kept thinking was there's no way we're getting off here, you know, we're all dead. a public hearing meanwhile on the oil spill is under way right now in louisiana. this is a live picture. the coast guard and the department of interior are talking about what they have done or what they found out so far in their joint

nearly 2,300 people have asked about the jobs, the priority going to gulf coast residents. they do have to get 40 hours of hazmat training before they can start but they have to wait until that oil spill does hit ground when they will be employed and deployed. >> thousands of other jobs in fishing and tourism are at risk. those could come to an end, at least temporarily. what has been the reaction on that front to the spill? >> it's been devastating for so many. we'll talk about one restaurant owner on the mississippi coast. he's saying he's angry, the oil spill is ruining his family's way of life. but two brothers who run a seafood business nearby say they still don't want the drilling to stop right off the coast there. >> just because something of this nature happens in the oil industry, it's not a black eye on the entire industry, it's really not a black eye on bp. it was an unfortunate accident,

and we're going to have to learn from it. >> we have to drill, there's no way we can get oil in this country within the next 25, 30, 50 years. we can't just turn off the spigot. >> they're saying they are still supporting oil. what a dynamic there on the coast. they also stressed that though bp should pick up the tab for a thorough cleanup, so they want that to be paid for by them, robin. >> richard, thank you. a federal appeals court ordered nine members of the militia group, hutarees, to stay behind bars. they are accused in a plot to kill law enforcement officers. a lower court ruled they could be released on house arrest until trial but the government is appealing that ruling. they have pleaded not guilty. a 10-year-old south carolina girl just got a bronze cross life-saving award from her girl scout troop. isabel bond was at a pool party last summer when a 3-year-old

good morning. new york stock exchange open for business. wall street had its best day in almost 14 months yesterday. so we're going to check whether it can keep the ball rolling in about seven minutes and jennifer will join us to talk about that. rescuers are searching across oklahoma and kansas this morning looking for victims from yesterday's wicked storms. tornados hammered both states, toppling cars, snapping power poles and ripping houses apart. five people were killed, at least ten people were hurt. the midwest could be in for another round today. on the kansas-oklahoma border, i-35 was closed after the winds there overturned the semis and

blocked all the lanes. homes were damaged and there was widespread power outages. 47,000 homes and businesses still don't have power. a bug that popped up on twitter appears to be fixed now, but the company says the glitch allowed users to add anybody they wanted as a follower of theirs. even if you said bono is a follower of mine, you could add it. for about an hour yesterday most accounts showed zero followers while the problem was being fixed so it was from one extent to the other. those were the top stories for you. good morning! maybe you slept in just a little bit. i'm robin meade. the companies involved in an oil spill in the gulf of mexico are going to have to answer to lawmakers today. senate hearings begin in about 30 minutes. we're expecting a lot of finger pointing. execs from bp, transocean and halliburton all blame each other for the explosion that led to the leak. now, we also have brand new video of what that leak looks

like at the source. bp has control of the tape from the underwater robotic cameras. really it's been reluctant to release any of the images but these are some of the first from underwater. you can see the dark cloud of oil just shooting into the water continually basically. homeowners in the flood-ravaged tennessee area are getting some help. if they have an fha loan, they will not have their homes foreclosed on for at least the next 90 days. that's from the department of housing and urban development. many business owners, for them the losses are devastating. >> i opened this store so it's kind of like my baby, you know. we try so hard here to have a certain look and a certain atmosphere. so it's devastating to walk in and find this water and this muck and this mush in your store. >> tim mcgraw and faith hill are putting together a flood benefit concert and that's scheduled for next month. more than a week after the floods, we're still hearing about dramatic survival stories.

according to delta, the dog escaped from its kennel before they could get him on the plane. paco's owners are heart broken. >> the dog was left down by us i feel like because it trusted us as its caretakers to safely take it to where it needed to be and that we would be with it and we trusted delta and they let us down. >> well, delta released a statement saying our staff have conducted exhaustive searches to locate the dog. delta offers its sincere apologies that it has been unable to recover the dog. delta goes on to say it has offered to reimburse the couple for all of the expenses associated with the dog.
