stop. a man in a pick up pull over on 580 near grant avenue in oakland then seconds later a gun battle broke out. the shooting left the gunman wounded and two officers injured. kiet do on what they also found that shut down the highway an d brought out the bomb squad. >> reporter: just when they were getting ready to clear the scene investigators found a suspicious looking package. called the bomb squad. a few hours later . . . >> it is unclear exactly what it was. the bomb squad also found a white binder labeled california. the chp said it contained material of interest. given the amount of weaponry and possible explosives found the fbi showed up. after all this drama no one is taking any chances. >> this incident that took place is absolutely every officer's worst nightmare. >> reporter: chp officers pulled over the white toyota

tundra which was driving 580 westbound on grant avenue in oakland. an officer walked up to the truck on the passenger side. >> any -- in which he observed the man reaching for a handgun. >> reporter: the suspect armed with a handgun, shotgun, high powered rifle and lots of ammo. a total of 10 chp officers showed up and opened fired with everything they had including shot guns and assault rifles of their own. at least 60 rounds were fired. it lasted many minutes. >> he would get back in the truck and lean out and fire multiple shots and get back in the shot. >> reporter: the suspect was wearing a bullet proof vest. two officers were cut in the face by flying glass as bullets shattered windows. it is amazing no officers were seriously hurt given the bullets pierced the doors of the patrol cars. >> where he was going, there is no doubt his intent was to

cause serious harm to either someone or a group of people. >> judging by the post on the youtube video many people along 580 heard the commotion around midnight. some saying it lasted longer and involved far more rounds than police say. >> it was boom, boom, boom. a ton of gunfire. it lasted for a long time. probably 25 minutes. i was estimating probably 2 to 300 shots is what i would guess. at first i didn't think it was gunshots. there were some of them i thought that has to be fire crackers or something. >> the chp identified the gunman at 45-year-old byron christopher williams of groveland. according to his mother he is a convicted felon who is still on parole. we know the man shot and killed by police yesterday near the fruitvale b.a.r.t station. 48-year-old fred collins. he was killed when he charged officers with a knife.

collins was spotted just after 8:00 a.m. in the morning in the 3200 block of east 12th street. opt joined the b.a.r.t centers in pursuing collins. they tried tasing him but police say he continued to resist. one witness said collins yelled at officers to shoot him. police say when he came at officers, they fired and he was killed at the scene. tomorrow supporters of the former b.a.r.t officer convicted in the killing of an unarmed passenger will hold a rally. it is set for tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. outside the superior court building. the rally is the first in the bay area in support of johannes mehserle. he was found guilty ten days ago of involuntary manslaughter inthe death of oscar grant. walnut creek police say they are prepared to keep the peace. 80 police officers are no longer patrolling oakland city streets but that doesn't mean the city is unprotected. don knapp on the reaction to the guardian angels stepping in. >> reporter: a band of guardian

angels gets some tips from b.a.r.t police as they set out to help keep oakland safe. >> it was nice to see them all dressed up. yeah. >> did you feel any safer? >> not really. they just walked through. >> reporter: shopper anna lynch s skeptical. >> it won't work in my opinion. seriously the guardian angels. they don't have any weapons. they don't have no backup like actual real cops do. so i think -- my opinion -- that's a bad idea. >> reporter: but the folks here may not have seen them in action. >> once we hit this corner it seems that we stirred up the hornet's nest. >> reporter: we caught up to them on international boulevard and 51st after they regrouped after running into prostitutes. >> starting bringing out their people to intimidate to move on. >> reporter: one of those confronting the volunteers said he had a gun under his sweatshirt. at the same time a crowd of young men were gathering across

the street at the liquor story on market. feeling that was a threat to citizens and ordered her troops across the street. there were words but more of a conversation than a threat. >> we are trained in martial arts we are trained in martial arts but the first thing we want to do is communication. >> reporter: the crowd dispersed but only after a few tense moments. >> sure. it will always be that way. but that's what the guardian angels are all about. that's why we carry no weapons so as not to look as menacing and also not to sound as a threat but more as a help to the community. >> reporter: no guns but tools ranging from martial arts to calling the cops. >> the tool of choice. communication. and hereby -- and here if seemed to work. don knapp. a fire in the south bay prompted a brief shelter in place order this afternoon. 1440 norman avenue at a recycling facility. firefighters were concerned

about spreading toxic smoke. all the clear was given after a short time. investigators say the fire was confined to the rear of the facility. no buildings were damaged and there were no injuries. a bit of help coming to teachers at trace elementary following a fire that did $10 million damage to the school. some parents raised $500 selling lemonade yesterday to restock teacher's supplies. the early morning fire destroyed 16 classrooms, a library and office. investigators say the fire was deliberately set but no arrests have been made. well, what was once a gushing disaster is now just a trickle of oil. but the government says that's still too much. tonight the admiral in charge is demanding b.p. submit a plan. why the cause for concern. >> reporter: that 75-ton cap is holding back the oil but engineers discovered seepage in the ocean floor around the

well. if it is hydro carbon b.p. must have a plan ready to open the well to relieve pressure. b.p. declined to comments on the specific report accept to say the company is working very closely with government scientists on the problem. >> no one associated with this whole activity wants to see any more oil flow into the gulf of mexico. >> reporter: with no oil flowing for the first time crews are cleaning up more crude than is being released and even though the gulf beaches aren't as crowded as they usually are more people did turn out this week to get a break from the heat. >> reporter: in louisiana people were taking advantage of the beaches being open again. peter nord says business has been slower since the oil spill. he is hoping news of the cap

morning you'll need a fast track. tomorrow, cash will no longer be accepted for car pools so the only way to pay the reduced $3 toll is with a fast track tag. also, car pools will need to pass through staff toll booths so a toll worker can verify there are three or more people in the car. also tomorrow, two more fire stations in vallejo are closing for good. they are on fulton avenue and mini drive. staffing levels will be reduced at the remaining stations so instead of 18 firefighters on duty there will be 15 during each shift. vallejo filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and since that time it has also lost a third of its police officers. a local animal shelter is running out of space and today encouraged the public to come pick out a pet. the east county animal shelter of alameda county held an adoption fair to find homes for dozens of dogs, cats and kittens. organizers say the influx of

animals is due to budget cuts at another shelter. our sister shelter in san leandro closed recently and we are getting all of their strays, all of their own surrenders. so we felt holding an adoption event when we had so many animals would be a great thing to do. >> but if you can't adopt a pet you can help by providing a temporary foster home. contact the tri-valley animal rescue if you're interested. school just around the corner for some kids and volunteers are helping students get ready. they were stuffing gift bags and backpacks with school supplies and shoes for the thousands of children who live in bay area shelters. the group my new red shoes is the inspiration of a mother who spent summers as a child wishing that she could afford new shoes for the first day of school. $3 million raised for aids research in just a few hours. some 25,000 people took part in the annual aids walk san

francisco covering a six-mile route in golden gate park. the money raised will support local hiv prevention, testing and care services at 60 bay area organizations. participants say the turnout shows they are not alone. >> it is feels good because it is like i'm not the only one that is affected by it, you know. i know my family is but other people who lost people are probably affected themselves, but as long as everybody comes together then we can fight this. >> aids walk san francisco has raised more than $76 million since 1987 and is now the largest aids fund-raising event in northern california. protestors disrupted the international aids conference in vienna today demanding drugs for all aids sufferers. protestors say rich nations should pay for drugs for the $33 million people who have aids in developing countries. leaders from around the world

are gathered to discuss progress in the fight against aids. meanwhile a canadian study presented at the conference today shows treating people with the aids drug cocktail appears to do more than just help the patient. the researchers found it also appears to prevent the spread of the disease to others. imagine being strapped to a chair and carried to the highest peaks around the world. a dream come true for some disabled adventure seekers getting the chance of a lifetime. how they are being taken to new heights. >> take this whole area. >> this is it. >> reporter: austin taylor has cerebral palsy diagnosed when just 2 years old. >> as i grew up i was told there would be places that i couldn't go. and when you're told you can't do something you're just more -- the desire is much more intense. >> reporter: two years ago austin's friend nick cunningham

was on a backpacking trip and made a decision that would ultimately change austin's life. >> while i was enjoying the scene, people in wheelchairs couldn't make that hike or see this view. >> reporter: from there their dreams collided. >> we went to yosemite. >> reporter: the team of them with volunteers and a chair from a sacramento family that didn't need it any more. >> life is about taking risks. to me it was no question. >> reporter: a 12-hour day. tiring and inspiring. >> helping carry the chair was just -- yes. i can't wait to do it again. >> the picture that i used to stare back at my computer screen for. now i'm overlooking it. how much better could it get?

>> reporter: cbs5. >> wow. lawrence, is the weather going to make us smile? please. >> depends where you are at. if you like it hot. this has been your kind of weather especially inland. cool weather at the coastline. you got that too. patchy fog making its way inside the golden gate over the bay bridge looking nice and clear though. and we will see more fog as we head in towards the next couple days. fog lovers you'll love it. as we look toward the middle of the week. still looking like tomorrow will be hot in spots inland but we are talking well inland up in the mid-90s. places like antioch. brentwood. try valley. upper 80s to low 90s in toward the avenue. inside you will see seabreeze in oakland. 50s and 60s on the coastline. couple patches of fog right along the san mateo coastline. most blowing off by the afternoon but refill tomorrow night and into tomorrow morning. still warm in spots. 72 degrees in concord. or 72 degrees in concord.

67 in san jose and san rafael. i think we will see the weather change as high pressure will start to weaken. this ridge has been over the desert southwest and continuing to make its way eastward meaning we are in for slow cooling especially inland. not much cooling along the coastline. can't cool much more than that you have in the next couple days. day tomorrow patchy fog giving way to lots of sunshine inland. 91 degrees in livermore. about 82 in santa rosa. you're looking at lots of 70s inside the bay. about 81 degrees into san jose. so looking out over the next couple days. we will be in for changes. that ridge will start to move out of the way. will allow cool air to filter in. more low cloud and fog going to bring those temperatures down probably slightly below normal around the bay area. not a really big deal but then headed towards next weekend bring it even a little bit cooler. i know a lot of folks like the heat. there are some that say stop,

the 93-year old actress fell out of bed last night reaching for her phone. doctors say she'll need a total hip replacement. she's been in a wh zsa zsa gabor will have to have a hip replacement. she fell out of bed. she has been in a wheelchair since a 2002 car accident and suffered a stroke in 2005 reportedly. surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren former south african president nelson mandela celebrated his 92nd birthday today. he hosted dozens of visitors
