a short period of time. when he they deliberately set or did one fire to spread? the fields burned quickly. firefighters focused on protecting property. this caravan of firefighters headed to the substation. it was not damaged but the heavy winds had residents worry. >> the wind is changeable. we had a crazy wind blowing today. >>reporter: a pickup truck and a car and a motorcycle burned. one major complaint that some property owners don't keep their fields cut load as required. >> there supposed to be least 30 feet of bare ground. most of the people out here don't do it. >>reporter: an off-duty firefighter driving to the area saw the smoke and ended up making a rescue. >> i couldn't get out. >>reporter: this is the house that is now heavily damaged.

at this driveway it was fully engulfed with black smoke. >> i parked my car and walked up to it i heard screaming. i took off and ran up the driveway into the younger lady was out and the older lady was indoors. she wouldn't come out because of the dog and i picked her up and pulled her out. >>reporter: they worked quickly and without air tankers. with the light [ indiscernible ] that we have we could have a big fire. the correlated attack and we were able to quickly knock it down. >> a few fire crews remained on the scene. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. door-to-door in warning that

cities could close five fire stations. the union rallied at when it threatens stations. they say closing the fire houses would mean an increased risk for public safety. the union says it offered concessions that are identical that the police officers offered and the city approved. that proposal would save the city 54 jobs. they're hoping that a $2000 award would help lead to an arrest. it was started late on july 7. the jungle gym was destroyed. witnesses say they saw juveniles in the area just before the fire. how they are patrolling that city and they need changes. >>reporter: the problem are

fewer offers his and more dangerous confrontations. today there were only six officers on duty in the city of alejo. there is a population of almost 117,000. so starting today the police officers are doubling up, two officers in every patrol car. there has been an increase in armed robberies here and one officer isn't always safe when responding on his or her own. >> we cannot protect its citizens if the officers are not safe. >> the streets are dangerous now. you don't want to be out there by yourself. >>reporter: with only a few cars patrolling the city, some people are worried that no one is safe. >> we need the policeman just in case something goes wrong. you need somebody to protect you. >>reporter: the police have been trying this out often on for the past couple of months and save their response time for calls has become longer but they are doing their best. >> our job is to protect the

community. if people think they can get away with crime because there's fewer of us, that is a chance they shouldn't take. >> there is nothing for people to do. there's nothing for the use for the kids to do. and losing officers is a bad thing. >>reporter: earlier this month the department announced it was suspending its canine and swat units for 90 days to balance the budget. that takes effect later on this month. they say a known gang member died after being shot up to 15 times. 24-year-old terry dawson was shot early this morning while he was in a car. he drove about three blocks before he crashed and he later died at a hospital. police beefed the murder is being related. so far no arrests. (are looking for gunman who opened fire at a party last

night. two people were shot inside an apartment on 83rd avenue. a 13 no boy was shot in the abdomen and is critically injured. a 12 or 13 no girl was shot in the-foot. police do not have a clear description of the shooter and they are still investigating a motive. another pit bull attacked and this one was in oakland. this attack happened on 82nd street. a neighbor who does not want to be identified said the pit bull that a 7-year-old girl in the face after the owner asked if she wanted to pet the dog. >> he is holding the dog on the caller and all of a sudden the dog lunged at him and it in the mouth. >> they say that the little girl was taken to the hospital. animal control took the dog

away. a gruesome find a link to the drug wars in northern mexico. investigators have discovered 51 corpses in a series of tips that may be a dumping site for victims of the violence games. the site was discovered near a trash dump. monterey has been the scene for many drug wars. nearly 25,000 people have been killed. an intense search is underway for two men in the us navy. they disappeared friday. c-charlie daggett shows us the area where it happened. >>reporter: this is a low card. this is where two us sailors have disappeared from the massive air and ground search is underway to find them. taliban representatives told cbs

news they have been taken to a secure location. us military confirmed that two navy service members left their base and disappeared into province. local afghan chief tried to stop the sailors vehicle but we kept going they opened fire and the troops shots back. the only us soldier to be believed held is boat from idaho. he disappeared into thousand nine and has only reappeared on video. while they search for the serviceman, others come under attack. although troops survived this raw -- roadside bomb attack with minor injuries, the military said five soldiers have been killed in separate bomb attacks on saturday. last month was the deadliest since the war began. now american troops can only hope that the two missing colleagues can be found alive.

>>reporter: despite the tragedy, the music never stopped. in late afternoon with a deadly crash in the crowd at the edge of the festival, authorities fear announcing emergency might make it worse. the music fans were caught under a highway overpass in a bare concrete tunnel. it was both engines and exit. when something set off a panic. one account that it was a loudspeaker warning there was no more space and telling people to turn around and leave. but they couldn't. they were trapped in what quickly became a fatal suffocating jam. some tried to climb their way out. >> it was a blockade says this man, a frenzy. by luck we were pushed out of print but many who failed were trampled and help could not get them into the crowd thinned. with emergency workers attending the injured, police simply set it had been chaotic.

hurricane season. >>reporter: the forecast looks good enough and bp can try its luck with the static kill within days. when the ships used to burn oil would instill pump heavy mud down through a series of pipes and into the well. it will be followed by concrete to form a plug inside the wealth pie. if it works, bp would still go ahead with the relief well and drilling into the cases at an angle and then pumping mud and concrete to fill the space between the casing ended the actual welp i. the well would be permanently sealed. >> the process could begin tuesday. that's the day the bp meet with investors. even before the storm threatened, grant i was or is starting to take down some of its defenses like this boom would choose to stretch the entire 7 miles of this beach. they haven't a single large amounts of oil wash ashore here in more than three weeks. still oil is just 5 miles from
