good evening. investigators will be back aton east bay landfill tomorrow to continue their search for a missing man who may be another victim of a murder spree that took four lives. tonight there was a vigil to mourn the dead >> reporter: church and community members gathered to remember the victims of violence and the families left behind. the . >> we now realize how precious and how short and fragile life is. so appreciate the ones you love because you never know when they will be taken away. >> reporter: all those killed were remembered including the man investigators link to the murders. even though condemned to die said the vice mayor get a prayer. >> the priest or whoever it is still gives a prayer because that individual still has a

family left behind. >> reporter: the father urged memories of the police and community agencies and the community emergency response team. >> our sert group who comes and is donating their time, at that landfill, hopefully searching, hopefully that we will nod find frederick dead. >> reporter: frederick salas remains missing its feared he is at the landfill. the missing 35-year-old is the son of a 73-year-old who was found beaten to death a week ago. the younger one may be the 5th murder victim in a string of killings that appear to be linked to one man. he was shot and killed by police on tuesday after a high speed chase. in the car was the body of cindy tran kidnapped as she left work tuesday evening. the bodies of two other women were found in his home monday.

the vigil ended with a wish to help those who might harm others. >> hope that one day anybody anyone who is upset or worried can find someone, someplace where they can go to get help. >> reporter: searchers say they will be back at the landfill tomorrow morning. i asked one officer how he can be sure that the body is in the dump . he said they aren't sure but with the information they have they have no choice but to keep looking. >> seems like so much ground to cover. how long do you think? >> they have 244 acres of dump site but they have patterns and have an idea of where the trucks go. they have to sort that out. once they are done with that they can say they feel he isn't there. >> a man shot and killed, shot to death in daylight. it happened on springs road around noon today. neighbors heard shots and saw the suspect flee in what looked

like a silver or white honda. the victim was 42. this is the 11th homicide this year movement a livermore man in jail accused of stabbing his teen son 11 times. gary gomez got in a fight with the 14-year-old on a fishing trip. his wife got hurt trying to stop the fight . none of the injuries serious. gomez will be arraigned on wednesday movement efforts to crack down on drunk drivers appears to have paid off this holiday weekend. police have arrested 167 drivers since friday night. that's up from last year. statewide there have been almost a thousand arrests. and the cost of drinking in san francisco could get higher. the sup soups want a fee on alcoholic drink. >> reporter: hangovers are no fun and the bar tab won't be either if a new alcohol fee is

imposed. >> can't stop the politicians who come up with this idea. >> reporter: the board of supervisors is considering a new fee for alcohol. something like five cents for a bottle of beer. >> it'll impact our business. >> reporter: he said customers will go away. >> change their habits and drink at home instead of drinking here. they won't quit drinking. >> reporter: the new fee is expected to generate $16 million for alcohol abuse programs. last year 13 and a half million was spent just to get drunks off the streetful the idea is to off set city costs like paramedic responses and emergency room visits. >> cities is in big enough trouble. >> reporter: a long time bartender said it's hard enough

came to his defense in the wake of sexual harassment allegations. the top job isn't available. he resigned after an hp marketing contract era cause him of harassment. this week the state's court will hear amounts on three lawsuits challenging the governor's power to furlough state workers. 114,000 state employees filed suit. the governor ordered them to take unpaid days off in response to the budget crisis. the cores ruling that may take months could affect all workers furloughed this wear and last year. checking headlines around the bay area the police have identitied two young men who were killed in a collision in san francisco. it happened last flight at brotherhood way and lake merced. a 19-year-old and 20-year-old were killed. three other people are in the hospital with serious injuries.

no word on what caused the accident. and the family of a man who died after being killed on the streets of oakland has received a gift. several east bay organizations have raised 75,000 dollars for the wife and son of the man. he and his son why attacked by two teen its while shopping last april. the money was donated to help the son continue his studies. two 18-year-old's have been charged in the murder. and historic bell that was taken from a penninsula theater has been found six years after it disappeared. the great chap el bell belonged to the theater in foster city. on friday someone called and said they saw it at a scrap yard. is that happened to be the same day the theater was celebrating it's 70th anniversary. the theater can't wait to put it back to work. >> it used to ring to start a show or ring at the end of

the gulf of mexico. what investigators could learn from the blow out preventer that failed. >> reporter: rising slowly from the floor of the gulf a one million pound piece of metal. the blow out preventer that didn't live up to its name. it's recovery could be the ro section etta stone to the worst environmental disaster in american history. >> we want to know why it didn't function the way it was supposed to and we don't want it to happen again. >> reporter: this was the first look at the complex device that could have saved 11 lives on board the rig and revented 200 million gallons of oil from fouling the gulf of mexico and hundreds of miles of shoreline. the blow out preventer was supposed to slice through the drill pope in an emergency and seal the well. it failed. >> possible that the well head had two pieces of drill pope in

it rather than a single piece and the blow out preventer wasn't able to cut through both. >> reporter: lifting the preventer out of the sea was a painstakingly slow process. it took almost 30 hours when it was done thad allen said the damage blow out preventer is now under the supervisors of the criminal investigation team, an fbi recovery team. the oil industry in the gulf is treading water since the stopping on deep water drilling. an engineer said recovery of the preventer may change that. >> know that we have the stack on surface and the investigation moving forward be age to better get the oil industry back up and moving again. >> reporter: it'll take days for the preventer to reach land. it'll be taken to a nasa facility near new orleans. results will be of great interest to the many victims of
