you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news on the cw. windows shattered, a manhole cover blown. the powerful bay area explosion our crew caught on camera. bay area fire that also forced a factory to evacuate. >> but i don't know when my life will be normal again. freedom is cherished but a year in prison took its toll. the painful visions in the minds of a uc berkeley graduate. excitement sores in the bay area. the spectacular sights and tributes at our biggest fleet week in years. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a san francisco neighborhood rocked this afternoon by a manhole. investigators still trying to find out what happened. it happened near sacramento

streak on samsung. two of our employees caught the whole thing on camera as it happened. >> reporter: this explosion happened at around 4:00 p.m. let me give you the lay of the land. that is a manhole cover that blew off earlier this afternoon. and you can see there are windows boarded up here at king george restaurant. that entire window was blown out by the force of the blast. now, most of samesum between california and clay was blocked off this evening. we had a personal experience driving down the street coming back to the station. when we saw smoke coming from a manhole my photographer and i thought it was suspicious and pulled over. my photographer got out to start rolling video on it. and then we heard this. scary sound. the kind that has you ducking for cover. i was calling 911 afraid that another cover could blow.

fire and smoke coming from another manhole. pg&e has not said too much about this at this point. we saw two pg&e workers around the corner at the same time as the explosion so it is unclear if there was any work going on at the time. we did speak with the bartender who works around the corner. here is his story. >> essentially the lights at irish times bar were flickering. i went out to see what was happening and there were flames coming out of one of the manholes. we heard a boom. and the other manhole shot up about 10 feet in the air. some windows broke. then kind of pandemonium broke out. >> reporter: the fire department brought in carbon dioxide to help distinguish that underground fire. they say it was an electrical vault that blew with three circuits. but the investigation here is up to pg&e. in san francisco, cbs5. in san jose flames damaged a radio tower and transmitter building. it all started around 5 p.m.

this afternoon after a car crashed on 101 near mckey and caught fire. that fire spread to the grass and then the winds and flames went to the radio tower. about 40 workers in a nearby kellogg's factory. no injuries reported. firefighters are still at the scene. gunfire at a san francisco nightclub early this morning and tonight police are still looking for the suspect. the shooting happened at cafe cocoa-mo. the suspect shot a 23-year-old man inside the nightclub and that victim has life threatening injuries and is in the hospital. there is no suspect information at this time. uc berkeley graduate who was in prison in iran for more than a year today denied she was a spy and pleaded with iran to free her two companions. don knapp shows us her emotional press conference which provided a chilling look

of their livesness an iranian prison. >> i'm very strong for them. >> reporter: shane bauer, her fiance and her friend josh petall. they were hiking along the iraq border when iran says they went over the border and were arrested as spies. >> coming out of prison i'm shock and dismayed in some ways that there could still be questions in iran and around the world about who we are. about what we were doing in northern iraq. >> reporter: speaking in berkeley today she says the three did nothing wrong, broke no laws and had come to the middle east because of their passion for justice and peace. she told of being taken to prison in tehran. >> we were forced apart for the first time and we clung to each other. we linked arms and we held each

other and we screamed because we didn't want to be separated. we were separated and we were thrown in different cells, all of us alone for the next month. >> reporter: in prison they learned to stay connected she says even when they couldn't see one another. she says the connection sustains the three of them even now. >> i can see them in their small cell with very little sunlight. they get out only once a day for an hour into a court-yard. i can see how small and how trapped they are and i know how they feel. >> reporter: in prison when she sang for her friends they would ask her to sing louder. she says she can still hear them. >> i can here shane and josh telling me now to speak louder for they will. to cry out for them and to ask the world to please help me and to help us to release them.

and to ask the iranian leaders to have compassion on my fiance and my friend and to set them free. >> reporter: sarah says she believes she was released for humanitarian reasons. two young sisters were walking their dog when a man threatened to shoot their relative if they didn't come with him. that's according to police. the girls say the man drove up to them in a green jeep near the corner of sunnyview drive and knobhill avenue yesterday afternoon. then reached out and grabbed the young, girl's shirt. the older girl pulled her sister free and the two ran home. they were not injured. today police released this sketch of the suspect. he has a grey goatee and is missing a tooth on the up upper left side of his mouth. the car had a blue license plate with a letter g and number 5 on it. anyone with information is

asked to call penol police. a couple in a fremont park managed to escape from two carjackers that shot at them as they drove away. they were parked in the mission san jose neighborhood when two men approached their car. one pointed a gun and demanded the car. the victims sped off. they heard shots as they drove away. police later found two bullet holes in the car. no arrests yet. muni's executive director is expressing his condolences over the death of a bicyclist who collided with a muni bus. 22-year-old derek al enwas at the intersection of 6th avenue and clement on thursday when he crossed into the street in front of the bus. the bus swerved but could not avoid him . the bus was not in service at the time of the accident. the driver is suspended with pay during the investigation which is standard procedure. a rally at uc berkeley

today to protest the elimination of baseball and other sports programs. about 300 people turned out to show their support for the athletes whose sports were cut. cal announced due to budget problems the university would cut baseball, men's and women's gymnastics and lacrosse. it also demoted rugby to varsity club status. they say they will work to restore the teams supporters said. >> if it means money then you can see from today we have got lots of energy and support to save cal baseball and if we have to put together an endowment that's what we will do. >> they discussed efforts to save the program yesterday but no program would be brought back at the expense of others. after being trapped underground for more than two months the chileean chile

miners may be freed. the celebration has already begun. >> reporter: rescue crews broke out champagne. and family members celebrated after drillers broke through to the trapped miners. a half a mile down the 33 men watched as their path to freedom opened. they have been living in the cramped hot space for more than two months. officials say they could start bringing the men out by wednesday. "i'm very happy," says the mother of a miner. it will just be a few days until i'm with my son. an american operated the drill at the moment of break through. jeff hart from colorado calls this the most important work he has ever done. >> a twist in the rock. extremely difficult formation to drill. >> you are feeling right now at this moment? >> on top of the world. >> reporter: below the surface the miners helped complete the job by detonating dynamite to clear the shaft. engineers are now preparing the hole for the narrow rescue

capsule. first paramedics will be sent down to examine the men. those considered psychologically strong will be the last ones to get out. and they will be given sunglasses to protect eyes that haven't seen the light of day in weeks. it is a moment family members have been waiting for. they set up camp outside the mine. on saturday the wife of a miner brought her newborn daughter who could soon meet her father for the first time. cbc news. the thunderous roars and an abundance of uniforms. >> military morale is sky high. celebrations today for the bay area's biggest fleet week in years. soon, if you buy a new iphone you won't have to subscribe to at&t. the other wireless character you will soon be able to sign up. i'm lawrence karnow in the

>> cutting a secret deal. >> jerry brown says it is an aide caught on a voice mail recording. his campaign issued an apology but some democrats are demanding brown personally apologize. whitman's camp joined the chore us of critics saying, quote," jerry brown is continuing to insult the voters of california by avoiding taking spoant for his own actions and actions of his campaign staff." now that the state budget has wrapped up governor arnold schwarzenegger is headed to russia. the governor is on a trade mission to promote california's high tech industries and connect silicon valley leaders. he left today for a five-day trip. fleet week the biggest in 20 years organizers say. the dazzling fireworks display is happening tonight over the bay. that is part of the fun of the big event. there is an official mission for fleet week. it includes emergency preparedness and military recruiting and as we will see,

there is something for everyone. >> reporter: it is the unmistakable sound of the blue angels' planes flying over the san francisco bay as american ships and their personnel gather for fleet week 2010. >> all day long. always good. >> reporter: from small spectators. >> i think it is a fun way to learn how we won the wars. >> reporter: to those who walked in their shoes. >> i have been across the big pond a few times. >> reporter: to the mother who can barely wait for her son to come home. >> he is coming in on the u.s.s. chief. i don't get to see him too often because he has been in the military for 12 years now. whenever i can i go see him. if he is in port i go see him. >> reporter: this port is part party and part recruitment efforts. >> it is a gad feeling because everybody coming out here they are all interested in the navy. they all want to see it.

coastline. not going to ruin your day tomorrow. we will see another great one outside. lots of sunshine. mostly sunny. temperatures moving well into the 80s in many spots inside the bay for fleet week. mostly sunny skies. temperatures into the 70s and low 80s. out toward the coastline i think looking at patchy fog early on. some sunshine in the afternoon. temperatures in the 60s and near 70-degree by the afternoon. numbers outside right now looking at 67 degrees in concord. 62 in vallejo. 62 in san rafael. 55 degrees and foggy conditions in pacifica. if you plan on traveling around the state you'll see 80s in the interior. so high pressure checking in to the bay area this weekend and will stick around for the next few days. as a matter of fact, we will see an offshore wind kicking in especially tomorrow night and into monday and tuesday. that's a look at the temperatures popping a little more but tomorrow looking mostly sunny and warm after a couple of patches of fog early on. computer models picking up pretty well. 7:00 a.m.

patchy fog to start your day. fleet week. check it out. looking good heading into the middle day. lingering patches of fog out towards the beaches. temperature wise not bad at all. 82 degrees in santa clara. 80 in union city. east bay temperatures running well into the 80s inland. lots of 70s just inside the bay. almost 80 degrees into oakland. as you look towards the north bay temperatures warming up very nicely. 70s and 80s for just about everyone. looking like a great end to the weekend too and we will continue that. columbus day. lots of sunshine. warmers temperatures. something we may want to watch out for. offshore winds kicking up. think they will be strong over some of the mountain tops as we head into monday and tuesday. then we will start to talk about the possibility of fire dangers. something else to worry about at the beginning of this next week. tomorrow looking good. just a couple of patches early on. >> thank you. we will take it one day at a

available through at&t but according to new reports the iphone 4 will be available through verizon early next year. the mobile phone operator is the nation's largest adding it could significantly boost sales of apple's iphones. hard to believe but today would have been john lenon's 70th birthday. the former beatle gunned down 30 years ago in new york. and around the world today there were celebrations to honor the rock legend who lives on. >> reporter: from around the world they came. some for whom john lennon's was the sound track of their adolescence. celebrating a man who still matters 30 years after his death. >> i remember him as a maverick, a rebel. >> reporter: in liverpool,

lennon's birth place his first wife and son julian celebrated his life with a sculpture called peace and harmony. >> to honor that and to pray for peace. >> reporter: near iceland lennon's widow and ringo star lit a tower. it is called imagine peace. she said lennon would be fighting for peace still. >> he would not be retired. he is not the retired type. >> reporter: but lennon remains the type that merchandisers can only dream of. a documentary chronicling his years in new york. and a new film "nowhere boy" shows the birth of the beatles. >> we should write our own stuff. >> reporter: lennon's stuff says a music editor is timeless. >> this was somebody who from a very young age was writing

after south carolina upset alabama 35-21. as for our local teams here we go. talking sports. forget about fleet week for a while. stanford clinging to a six- point lead. bradford scores. just over a minute to play giving them the lead. leading the cardinals down the field. taylor fumbled twice tonight. gets them closer with that 16- yard run. with the game on the line delivering. stanford beats usc 37-35. cal snapped their two-game losing streak with an impressive 35-7 win over ucla. scoring twice and ran for over 100 yards for the third consecutive game. to the ice now sharks will leave sweden with a 1-1 record. ethan moreau scoring the game winner for columbus. final 3-2. sweeping the twins for a second year in a row.
