senate candidate charlie fiorina. they say electing karly would affect women's rights. >> karly's agenda is too extreme. >> reporter: the republican national committee victory went on inside. palin said the democratic party failed the mesh people and change will -- american people and change will come on the election day. >> people know something has gone terribly wrong with the american government and it has gotten off track, but people also know there is nothing in america that a good old election camp can't fix. [ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: but major republicans in the election were a no-show. meg whitman, the republican running for governor skipped the occasion because of other events, as did karly. the congressional and state and local governments were there.

the republican party chairman, michael steele wanted to clear the riff between the republican and tea party. >> there is no struggle, rift, fight, between those that claim the banner of the tea party, and those who are in the republican party. we work together. >> reporter: but when it come to sarah palin, a tea party favorite, poles show her endorsement may do more harm than good. she only has a 33% approval rating in california. fiorina's absence is ironic. mayor democratic rival, senator barbara boxer is using it to slam fiorina's character. >> my opponent is proud to have the support of sarah palin. i can tell you, you can tell about a person when you look at the company they keep. >> reporter: the poles show both the senate and governor's race are still too close to call.

>> president obama was there in massachusetts to support the massachusetts governor due pal. who is struggling to stay in office. he raised $900,000 for the senatorial campaign committee. an oakland woman killed in a drive-by shooting overnight was an innocent victim, according to investigators. 29-year-old carolyn howard wassen west street about midnight going out dancing with friends. police say someone in the car sprayed the streets with bullets, hitting three men. howard happened to be standing nearby. the wounded men were the targets and are expected to survive. tactical response teams from around the world are spending the day in bay area. they are preparing for emergencies like chemical attacks, mass casualties and school takeovers. they show us their intense training. >> reporter: teams of armed law

enforcement repel down the smoke ventilation shaft inside the trance america tower. from the 48th floor down to the 44th, they are sneaking up on an intruder with a gun. >> put them in real life building, airlines and boats, whatever they would actually face, so when they do face it, if they have to, they will be ready. >> reporter: it is part of an exercise called urban shield. the bay area departments, the fbi and national agencies participate. officials say the training worked, like the shooting withmezmez. >> they knew how to get there and where to go. >> reporter: for 48 hours these teams with barely sleep, reenacting dozens of different scenarios, from terrorism to hostage takeovers. >> they are selective. these guys you saw today are the best of the best. >> there are four hostages,

least tomorrow. the far right lane that is been closed since inspectors found a crack under a steel girder yesterday. yesterday cal tran decided to put in at least one more girder than originally anticipated. they hope to have all three lanes open in time for monday morning's rush hour. a maureen county homeowner lost her fight to reserve her grove of young lipties trees. the city says the trees are a fire and physical danger to the neighborhood because the branches break and fall. # she took it to court and fought it, until she found the appeal's court refused to hear her case. all the trees had to be taken down. so, what is going on with

the weather? >> well, things are cooling off drastically. temperatures taking a big dip, 15 to 20-degree in the bay area. how about that. look at the nice, giant orange out there. things looking good. low clouds, and mid to high level clouds that continue to bring -- well, it looks like rain -- but not seeing much in the way of rain drops, as they evaporate before they hit the surface. things will start to moisten up in the atmosphere. tomorrow we could see a couple of scattered, light showers. partly cloudy skies, temperatures way down. 60s and 70s again. the big story will be how cool it is in many spots around the bay area and a slight chance of scattered light showers. numbers around the bay area, 50s and 60s. if you are headed out the door, bring that coat with you. it is cool. a pretty good seabreeze blowing, too. around the state, temperatures in the 70s in the central

valley. temperatures in the high country could pop up in the afternoon hours. temperatures on the cool side, 50s and 60s for a high. the low pressure is moving on shore, gathering moisture from the pacific into the bay area. you will see a whole lot of clouds. you have a chance of a couple of rain drops, too, and the temperatures will be way down. bring a thick jacket if you are heading anywhere around the bay area. it will be cool in many spots. at the beaches, 50s and 60s. and the bay area, 60s for a high. san francisco on southward is the best place to see the system, as it drags south of the area. we will struggle to get up in the 70s. the warmest spots, maybe. numbers mostly in the 60s. with that in mind, as we look toward the next couple of days, the system driving through sunday and monday. partly cloudy skies that day, too. looks like by tuesday we will warm things up as high pressure

just ask jerry brown. he gave california state employees collective bargaining powers. since then the unions have grown stronger and stronger. now state employees can retire at 55 with much of their salary for life. and taxpayers are on the hook for one hundred billion dollars in unfunded pension liabilities. no wonder those unions are 100% behind jerry brown. he'll just spend, and spend, and spend.

establish a new neighborhood in san francisco. it is located between 2nd and 5th streets and marked to harrison streets. they introduced a new community at a neighborhood fair. there will be a five year campaign to promote businesses and establish an eclectic area, with a safer, cleaner and greener neighborhood. police say a motorized pair are rider ran into a hot air balloon in phoenix. the baby became entangled and the balloon was ripped apart. both came crashing to the ground, with one witness only being about 60-yards away when it happened. >> it was hard so tell what direction it was going. >> there were three people on board the balloon. one person was on the payer

you know it's bad when the press asks if you'd take a lie detector test. meg whitman didn't tell the truth about not voting or about how long she lived in california. she got caught in insider deals at goldman sachs. she changed her story about physically abusing an employee. she campaigned as tough as nails on immigration knowing her housekeeper of 9 years was undocumented. her tv ads have been condemned as false and misleading.
