francisco chronicle says all to the series and the win came in enemy territory. kim coyle reporting on how our national league champs pulled it off. kim, what an exciting day. >> reporter: it was truly amazing to be here in philadelphia. of course, the giants never make it easy. they never do anything easy and of course it certainly wasn't easy for them to get this win tonight. giant fans were thinking here we go again when they jumped out to that early lead. but the bull pen was brilliant. another go ahead homer and brian wilson was on the mound to close it out in the 9th. >> ryan howard. 3-2 pitch. got him looking and the giants win the series. >> reporter: it is never easy with these guys but they did it and they are now one of two teams still playing baseball. the giants are headed back to the world series for the first

time since 2002. >> i was up at six. couldn't take a nap. i was here at noon today. hoping to not have to go through this again. i mean, gosh, nobody wants to go to game 7. these guys are so tough. especially with this crowd. unbelievable. it is so loud you can't even hear yourself think. >> you always think about being the hero and the world series and this and that, but this is just so special for me right now. i will cherish it for as long as i can. >> reporter: of course they will have three days to enjoy this one. game 1 of the world series is on wednesday at at&t park and cody ross, he is the mvp. eight r.b.i. just an amazing nlcs. in fact, an amazing post season for him. gary will have much more coming up in sports in a little bit. >> kim, the rest of us here in san francisco are trying to

remember to breathe. what was that like, that last out? >> reporter: it was unbelievable. i mean, 3-2 and what a gutsy pitch wilson threw. i couldn't believe it. we were all standing in the tunnel waiting to go on the field and all of us really felt like we were going to throw up. and it is the best kind of torture i think any of us have ever experienced. an amazing and fitting way for brian wilson to close it out. he got him looking. unbelievable. >> opposite of torture is relief. which is what we are feeling. kim coyle in philadelphia. great job. thank you so much. >> we are ready to celebrate. we already have our t-shirt out here, of course. national league champions. we are outfitted with our baseball cap and of course as we showed you earlier, pretty much says it all. as you can imagine celebrations are erupting across the city and the cheers were deafening at bay area bars after the

giants struck out philadelphia's last at bat here chanting for juan. the hands in the air, hugs, tears. the pride you see here felt throughout san francisco tonight. >> i just want to say how sweet it is. >> the celebration continues outside on the streets. fans going nuts on this saturday night in honor of the giants nlcs championship. the city will continue to fly the giants flag and the lights will be giants orange at city hall, war memorial opera house

and the treasure island administration building. as you can see in the pictures the rain is continuing to fall in the bay area and it is causing minor traffic problems. this oak tree came down in sonoma county partially blocking a road just east of windsor. no one was hurt but the soggy weather definitely contributed to bring down the tree. a driver lost control in the slick conditions as well. it happened on a rural winding road. we don't know how the driver is doing but the wet roads likely contributed to the accident. our meteorologist lawrence karnow is tracking the storm and says there is more to come. >> starting to see more rainfall moving in right now. look at high-def doppler radar. a lot of green beginning to show up outside. you can see it spreading across much of the north bay. pockets of moderate to heavy rain. there could be a couple, maybe three more to come.

the heaviest still yet to come. now spreading in across the peninsula and looks like more scattered showers for the south. but everybody going to see some pretty good rainfall as we head into tomorrow. what we can expect to see. you'll see strong gusty winds go along with heavy rain. wind advisory up for much of the coastline, sustained winds to 30 miles per hour, gusting to 45, maybe 55 or so over some of the mountain tops. urban flooding. watch out for puddles on the roadway. going to be a mess tomorrow. be careful. more on your weather coming up in a few minutes. ann, back to you. >> and you have the world series forecast to check out too. >> you bet. a san jose city councilman was caught red handed stealing signs for a ballot measure that he opposes but the councilman says he was just being a good citizen. don knapp on the battle of words over the battle of the signs. >> reporter: this looks like it could be an embarrassing moment for san jose city councilman. in this video shot by a

firefighter a police officer stands by while olivero pulls out campaign signs. the firefighters claim he stole their signs. >> this is right where we pulled it out. his car was parked right here with his trunk up and that was chalked full of signs too. >> reporter: no on v campaign consultant gives his version of what happened next. >> i pulled up my car right along side of his. he was stuffing the sign in the back of his trunk. i rolled my window down and said, hey, what are you doing? he saw me. we know each other. he jumped into his car. sped out of that parking lot. >> reporter: he says firefighters and volunteers drove to his home and waited for him. when he arrived and saw the firefighters he took off.

>> he broke every law. >> did you break it trying to catch him? >> one car lost him. another car was able to keep up with him. he literally closed the door, locked it and ran away. >> reporter: but the council member tells a different story. >> well, the municipal code, 23.2.880 allows for the city and/or volunteers to remove them from public property. >> reporter: he said he was doing his civic duty. >> their signs are littered along san jose. they shouldn't be there. >> reporter: he still has another sign in his trunk for a congressional race he also claims was illegally placed. don knapp, cbs5. >> you probably can tell then. 10 days to election day and candidates are campaigning nonstop. working the phones in san jose asking voters to help her

unseat the democratic incumbent barbara boxer. the race is very tight with only a few percentage points separating the candidates. boxer's lead has shrunk a poll shows to 5 points since accept. carlie told campaign leaders today that victory is possible. >> it won't happen if we take a single day or single vote or single dollar. so we have to work really hard now every single hour of every single day for the next ten days. >> this week carly gave her campaign another $1 million of her own fortune. that brings her total contributions this year to 6.5 million. >> anyone who says they are ready, willing and able to destroy this coastline does not understand, really, what our work is as human beings. >> meanwhile senator barbara box on the beach in santa monica said she will continue to fight against offshore oil

drilling. boxer says californians support her decade of fighting for the environment and economy and dismissed the possibility that voter anger against democrats is chipping away at her lead in the polls. >> what should i know about the vietnamese community that i don't know? tell me what i need to be aware of. meg whitman took her campaign to asian american vote, today. the candidate visited vietnamese restaurants in san jose this morning and korea town in los angeles. the polls show the former ebay executive slipping further behind her democratic challenger jerry brown. brown took the day off from campaigning and had no public events scheduled. union workers join the call for justice. why they say the case of oscar grant touches home for them. california's jobless numbers still stuck at 12.4%. the one region of the bay area that is bucking the trend.

solidarity as the sentencing hundreds of oscar grant supporters gathered in the east bay today to show solidarity as the sentencing nears for the former bart officer that shot and killed grant.

a demonstration was held at oakland city held but felt on city docks. [ cheers and applause >> reporter: today hundreds of people came to oakland city hall to demand justice for oscar grant. >> it is very powerful because we have international eyes on us and we believe today there is an opportunity to see the system work. >> reporter: it was also a show of force by a local long shoreman's union which stopped work at several local ports including here in oakland. >> it is our way of speaking out to the world that that kind of behavior is unacceptable. >> reporter: dozens of members came to protest police brutal ity over teamsters. >> there is no amount of money that can equal the loss of a life. >> i think it is really important for the community to

see each other coming together for a purpose. >> reporter: this rally comes less than two weeks before the sentencing of former b.a.r.t police officer johannes mehserle convicted in july of involuntary manslaughter for killing oscar at the fruitvale b.a.r.t station on new year's day's 2009. it was captured on cell phone video. >> we are just leaning on the community. >> reporter: in the meantime johannes mehserle's attorney is asking for a new trial citing a similar case in kentucky where the officer was not found criminally negligent. >> if he goes home on probation it will be a sad day not just for us as a family but for the system in itself when it comes to us understanding whether we have a right to justice. it would be a blatant slap in the face to the community and the world. >> reporter: in oakland, cbs5. the job mark in silicon

valley is showing signs of a rebound. after 23 straight months of declines the air posted its first year-over-year job gain. now, that's according to a new report from the california employment development department much the report says the san jose, sunnyvale are recovering faster. the economists predict the growth there will spread to neighbouring counties. a 25 million community center is now open in san jose despite money crunching. they celebrated the facilities grand opening today boasting a ballroom, game room and gym. eventually there will be a library too. city workers past and present have been working hard to get the center built despite the tough economy. >> it is a great day. it is a great day. i have been retired a year and a half and this is just absolutely fabulous. you know. the community has waited a long

time for this grand facility. >> voters approved the 38,000 square foot community center a decade ago. that was of course before the recession hit. lawrence is joining us now. i know we are talking about the rain. but what's the forecast for wednesday and thursday? >> wednesday is looking good. thursday may get a little iffy in the afternoon. we have got a storm that's brewing but nothing like we are seeing out there around the bay area. pretty wet out there on the roadways and, folks, we have got a pretty good storm system that is starting to brew off the coastline. things will be picking up. some very strong gusty winds around the bay area as well. still, it looks like rainfall amounts impressive especially in parts of the north bay. we are looking at maybe 2 to 3 inches of rain and that should be showing up in much of the north bay as we are expecting those heavy rains. about an inch to inch and a

half in the east bay. 1 to 2 inches along the peninsula. santa cruz mountains an inch to inch and a half. we have got that system off the coastline. this is really the main event that will start to slide in in our direction overnight tonight. expect rain and wind. very strong gusty winds especially out toward the coastline and heavy rain sliding south throughout the day tomorrow. timing. showers showing up tonight and on and off throughout the night. main event waiting until tomorrow morning and that's when things will begin to pick up here. will see some very heavy rainfall developing in parts of the north bay. watch out for puddling on the roadway. localized flooding. been fairly dry. so the ground able to absorb a lot of the moisture. as the system rolls on by it will continue to sag to the south. the heaviest amounts of rain will be found north of the golden gate. impressive all around the bay area. temperatures in the 50s and 60s. good day to take in a show, maybe just stay inside tomorrow as we will see a lot of rain

around the bay area. dangerous out on the roadways. i think by monday partly cloudy skies. tuesday. as we get into wednesday, we have a baseball game that day. big baseball game. world series. looking sunny and bright. very nice weather for the game. thursday again could be iffy. looking like a storm system could move in late in the day. doesn't look like it will cancel anything as of right now but it bears watching. >> i hate complaining about rain because we always need it but not wednesday or thursday. >> i will see what i can do. celine dion delivers in a big way. the new addition to her family. that's next. twin

teen who died while doing what he loved. >> reporter: lewkis ransome's body board is grim testimony that the attack was swift and deadly. he and his college roommate were in calm waters 100 yards off surf beach in santa barbara. a perfect day for surfing. >> saw him go underwater for a brief moment. came up. something was wrong. noticed that he had been attacked by a shark. >> reporter: help me, dude. that's all ransome said as the 18-foot shark hit. it was really fast. you just saw a red wave and this water is blue and it was just red. the whole wave. ransome's left leg was bitten at the pelvis. he died before his friends could get limb to shore. there was a moment of silence at his old high school. >> it was heartbreaking to

hear. >> reporter: shark attacks are exceedingly rare. 91 in the past 90 years in california by great white sharks. 13 people killed. authorities believe this was another great white attack. the last fatality two years ago when a 66-year-old tri--athlete bled to death after a shark took his leg. people are not surprised by this attack. >> scary. that can be anybody's kid. i'm sure they are out there. >> reporter: for anyone who isn't sure a sign on a closed beach. cbc news, new york. coming up in sports tonight much it was all about the giants and their bid to win the nl penant. sports is coming up next.
