arrive back in san francisco... and hundreds of fa >> like heroes returning from battle, the giants are back in san francisco and under the -- the fans turn out in the rain to greet them. i'm going to cut my losses, what else can i do? apparently the power has been out for hours. >> pour out and causing problems for drivers. the bigger impact for safety. an employee at a state mental hospital found murder under on -- murdered on the ground. a new poll shows a wider gap in the governor's race. they enter the final full week of campaigning. good evening. well, giants' fans didn't mind waiting in the rain today to welcome their heroes. hundreds waited for hours to cheer the giants as they returned from philadelphia as national league champions.

[ cheering and applause ] >> reporter: the cheers only got louder when some of the players jumped into the crowd for some personal high-fives. bumgarner was in there. tim lincecum just glanced back at the crowd. players said it was a long and tiring flight. but second baseman sanchez said he couldn't help it. he had to thank his fans. >> the energy and the atmosphere that we get to play in every night. a lot of people don't get to experience that, so this is a big reason and we're excited and we got to show that we

sanchez, because a lot of those fans aren't getting into the ballpark on wednesday or thursday. >> they were really exhausted coming back from that long flight. >> they looked it. well, some people couldn't get the homecoming celebration started early enough. fans are up and out early to sing the praises of the giants and celebrate the pennant win with bloody maries in san francisco. they have been playing a world series head quarter band since they won the championship. a san francisco native who played for the old -- big storm this -- first big storm this season, but got power problems for much of the day. we begin our team coverage with the wet weather's impact.

>> reporter: as we all know, weather around the bay caused problem everywhere. oakland seems to have more than it's share. 15,000 homes and businesses knocked out today. more trouble, where it reaches downtown oakland caused delays and those delays went system wide at bart. >> when the power went out, the fire alarms came in. nearly all false alarms triggered automatically by the loss of electricity. the fire department's own backup system, a generator failed to kick in automatically as it's designed to do. for an hour, they had to rely on a old-fashioned slower system. >> there was some of the old systems from many years ago. it's all done by hand, by the dispatchers using old box cards

and they had to use handheld portable radios but all in all it went real well. >> reporter: the power failure struck at 2:00 p.m. about 160 square blocks were dark. traffic lights out, pedestrians and drivers picked their way through intersections at some risk. bart station was closed. >> they shut down 12th street and i had to go to 9th street and come back. i walked about, well, more than 12 blocks and somebody told me that the lights are off down to the water. >> this is downtown oakland about 7:15 this evening. only headlights and tail lights imilluminate the streets. the rough weather was blamed for this. four people were gathered in a house whether they heard heard

has been found dead at the facilitiment police say a patient is responsible. a 54-year-old was found about 7:00 last night in an enclosed courtyard. a 37-year-old who was declared in insane in 1993 is charged. a 6-year-old girl is in critical condition tonight after a hayward apartment fire that trapped her in a back bedroom. firefighters were able the rescue the teen ablers 8-year- old sister and their father. about 1 five people were evacuated. only the apartment where the fire started was damaged. the cause is under investigation. -- shows not a single fine against pg&e's natural gas system in the past 11 years. documents released this weekend show pg&e paid a little over $6 million during that period for

bit. 50s and 60s. mild storm running through. most of that heavy rainfall moving eastward. still continuing to see some rainfall up there. now sliding to the south of us, we're going to start to dry things outs. the showers coming to an end after midnight. once they are gone, they are going to be gone for a few days, but there are some storms that will be developing and could be moving in later on this week. might have had night hour -- midnight hour, doppler radar picks up a chance for some showers out there. tomorrow morning's commute looking okay. you may have to watch out for some patchy fog. i think the rain is pretty much done. temperatures, plan on some 50s and 60s by tomorrow afternoon for highs. so not a bad day out there. not a real worm one but at least it's going to stay dry. as we head toward thursday, the clouds are gathering again. by friday, talking about some rain. we've got halloween coming up.
