how he got you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news on the the cw. a man rescued with the jaws of life. how he got stuck. thunder, lightning, heavy downpours and flooding and it is not quite open yet. a previously taboo subject discussed by the pope. condoms. what he says about their use which is contrary to general church teachings. making no one with explosives slips through airport security president obama responds to the uproar from airline passengers on pat downs and new full body scanners. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. a rare sight in the bay area tonight. lightening and thunder over san francisco. lightening was reported in sonoma county and other parts of the bay area and the national weather service says thunderstorms moving through the region could also bring

hail. also in san francisco, two northbound lanes of highway 280 were closed because of flooding earlier this evening. the storm dumped 2 feet of snow in the sierra. there is going to be a great powder there for skiing. squaw valley and north star opened today but it could be a problem getting there. if you're heading up that way, chains are required right now. there has been a dusting of snow on some of the higher bay area hills. lawrence karnow is tracking the storm. >> exciting evening around the bay area. thunderstorms. we had a strong squall of thunderstorms move through the santa cruz mountains about 7:00 p.m. guess what? doppler radar knocked out at the national weather service so they are completely dark to doppler radar. we are fortunate to have our own at channel 5 and we are picking up more storms you can see. moving to the south, a pretty long line of storms heading towards parts of san jose.

more of that on the way. looks like the possibility of more embedded thunderstorms. that means more hail, strong gusty winds and very heavy rainfall and, yes, maybe even some snow on our mountain tops. talk about that and prospect for more rain coming up in a few minutes. back to you, ann. >> thank you, lawrence. b.a.r.t service was delayed for much of the night not because of rain but because a passenger was trapped between a train and a platform. the man had to be rescued by the jaws of life. walnut creek b.a.r.t station around 5:30 p.m. this afternoon. firefighters had to fight through big crowds just to get to him. and it took almost half an hour to free him. an officer who saw the man fall told the train operator to stop the train from leaving the station and he is credited for saving the man's life. trains are running back on time tonight. an entire apartment building is unliveable tonight after fire tore through it earlier today. fire broke out in san mateo.

when firefighters got there, they saw fire and shooting from the second floor. they helped everyone get out safely and got the fire out within half an hour. no one was injured but 18 people are displayed. damage is estimated at $750,000. the cause of the fire is not yet known. checking other bay area headlines. hugs and tears at a funeral for an oakland parolee shot and killed by police. officers responds to go a domestic dispute say they believe jones was reaching for a gun. it was an electronic scale commonly used to weigh drugs. jones was on parole for a gun conviction. the officers involved are on paid leave. a victory for a high school football team. a compromise reached allowing it to turn on its field lights sometimes. neighbors sued the school last

fall saying the lights were too bright and it would be too noisy. they can play a thursday game, saturday and sunday playoff game. helping to rid a danville neighborhood of rodents. the homeowners association is installing four wooden boxes in hopes of attracting owls. they feed on the rats and gophers and moles. numbers have spiked this year and neighbors feel this is the safest solution to their problems. the swan that was found dead was most likely killed by humans. the swan was discovered a week ago with a broken neck. animal care and control said they did not find any evidence that the neck was broken because of an animal attack or being hit by a car. it is believed to be a human's

responsibility. so a comment by pope benedict is raising eyebrows within the catholic church. it is raising hopes the church may be loosening some of its prohibitions about the use of condoms. >> reporter: the comments are revealed in a book due out tuesday. the product of days of interviews of the pope by a german journalist. the vatican's newspaper releasing excerpts today. >> the pope is saying that condoms in themselves aren't inherently wicked, it is what people do with them that can be good or bad. >> reporter: in the book the pope was asked about controversial comments he made last year while on a visit to africa saying the aids crisis there could not be stopped. in the book the pope said his point was that simply handing out condoms was not enough to solve the problem of hiv aids. he then suggested in certain

instances using a condom might be morally defensible. not to prevent pregnancy but to avoid spreading disease. there may be a basis in the case of some individuals as perhaps when a male prostitute uses a condom where this can be a first step in the direction of a moralization. a first assumption of responsibility. experts say that view is one the pope and catholic theologians have said for years. >> the fact that there is any kind of movement at all on the concept of artificial contraception and how do we stop disease by the use of condoms, that's significant. >> reporter: the pope also defended the church's traditional teaching banning contraception and abortion yet his comments are drawing mixed reactions from catholics. >> start saying that and i don't know what would come next. >> i think it is very advanced for the pope and catholic

thinking. >> i think it is long overdue frankly. >> reporter: the pope's comments do not carry the weight of official church law but many interpret his remarks as a clear sign the vatican may have more to say on the issue in the future. cbc news, new york. president obama doesn't have to go through tight airport security screening but today he said he does understand the concerns of passengers. passengers can go through a full body scan or they can opt out and undergo a pat down instead. the president says terrorism has created this new reality especially after last year's christmas day bombing attempt. >> our tsa personnel are properly under enormous pressure to make sure that you don't have somebody getting on a plane with some sort of explosive device on their person. >> a metal detector did not catch the explosive device hidden in the suspect's

underwear and that played a part in coming up with the tighter security measures. the president said he told the tsa to find ways to screen passengers that are less intrusive. don't drink the water. coming up, what has restaurants in a california town closed. people refusing to drink the water. and the governor declaring a state of emergency. >> i miss him terrible. because it was a young life. a lot of happy times. >> answering decade-old mysteries. how a meeting today in the bay area made it happen. some say it could lead to another pipeline gas disaster. what pg &e is considering in san bruno now that the weather is getting colder.

matches and rocket fuel is contaminating it. several restaurants in barstone are closed and people are warned not to drink tap water for now. water samples showed high levels of the drug which can affect hormones and prenatal growth. there is a state of emergency declared in san bernardino county. >> we don't know for how long this is going to be. we have the little kids and family that is going to need it. >> people in barstow are told not to boil the water because that does not reduce the chemical level. the source of the contamination is being investigated. well, as it gets colder outside, pg&e is feeling the heat with more people turning on their heaters, the utility is thinking of ways to keep up with a growing demand for natural gas. there is fear of another pipeline disaster. >> reporter: cooler weather an increased gas demands has pg&e thinking of increasing pressure

in gas lines. it may be needed to deliver more gas on cold days when demand is high in san francisco. investigators have yet to determine the cause of the san bruno transmission line explosion but a pressure spurt is one of the things that is being looked at. understandably higher pressures are a concern for those who live around here. as we reported in october, pg&e has linked lines on the peninsula to bypass the broken section of line 32. that's the gasline that exploded. line 101, closer to highway 101, and line 109, further west have been operating at 20% lower pressure since the blast. to be sure there is enough gas on cold days pg&e is considering raising pressure in all the lines. >> lines 101 and 109. the two lines that run parallel, on to the peninsula, we could raise those operating pressures, first of all, in

conjunction with them but without their direct order. for line 132, that will be in very close consultation with them just as with the other lines but that would take an order from them. >> reporter: but jerry hill in san mateo told the san jose mercury he is opposed to that. he says they were inspected with the same technology that missed problems in line 132, the line that exploded. pg&e says they can get cuts from certain customers and conservation from everyone. don knapp, cbs5 in san bruno. >> >> buffalo -- before san bruno there was this one. state investigators concluded the utility is responsible for the blast in rancho cordova in 2008. yesterday the public utilities commission filed administrative

charges against pg&e. the "san francisco chronicle" reports a judge will decide whether to impose fines. climate changes and how it affects earth. that's in oakland. it is a climate lab that features the award winning t.v. science guy and uses interactive exhibits to help teach lessons about climate change. hands on activities are also helping to demonstrate energy saving strategies for daily life. pretty hands on weather out there, huh, lawrence? might need an umbrella, jacket. >> keep both hands on there. crazy night around the bay area. thunderstorms rumbling on through. tonight still seeing some of the activity. over san francisco lots of cloud. not much in the rain though. there is rain in other spots. doppler radar is picking it up well. strong bands of storms moving through. that's a band we talked about possibly knocking out the radar at the national weather service. santa cruz mountains. that moved on by but we have

got a couple more cells moving on through. we are not done with the rain just yet. heaviest band has gone on through and you can see it right here starting to stretch down in through the monterey bay area. but behind it you've got all the speckled clouds likely to rotate inwards over the next couple hours and into tomorrow. temperatures pretty chilly outside in spots. it is 43 degrees right now in santa rosa. 44 in the napa valley. 45 in vallejo. and in fairfield it is 45. temperatures getting chilly. and snow across our mountain tops. tough go in the sierra. very heavy snow. need chains. maybe another 1 to 2 feet as we add things up into tomorrow morning. the system diving in. really from the gulf of alaska continuing on and off tomorrow night with showers. continuing into monday and maybe tuesday morning as a couple waves of moisture move onshore. starting to break up a little bit and taper off as we head into the middle of the morning

tomorrow then i think as we look to tomorrow afternoon we will bring in sunny breaks, maybe a couple lightening strikes too. don't be surprised if you see a couple isolated thunderstorms popping up and rumble of thunder around the bay area. so with that in mind temperatures running up into the 50s for highs tomorrow. so kind of a cool, crisp day outside. as we are going to keep temperatures running well below the average for this time of year. next couple days we have got more showers in the forecast staying very cool. remember last week we were talking about record breaking temperatures. numbers up into the 80s. well, it is a far cry from that. and looks like it will stay that way. maybe warming things up. of the good things is for wednesday, a lot of people traveling and thursday thanksgiving right now looking sunny and bright. we could see some of that tule fog developing in the valleys. >> at least people driving home from thanksgiving next weekend is looking good for now? >> looks good, although on sunday there is a chance of rain returning to the bay area. >> that might change people's plans. >> i think so.

>> lawrence, thank you. >> you're welcome. well, the pain of not getting to say goodbye, never seeing a loved one again and the question, what really happened? those thoughts and feelings have haunted some bay area families for decades. loved ones who are missing in action are not forgotten. >> very hopeful. >> reporter: in this envelope a letter from a long lost love that could provide the closure that margaret has waited more than six decades to find. >> this was the last picture he received. he received before he got captured december the 1st. >> reporter: and who is that? >> that's me and his daughter. >> reporter: the daughter she conceived with her american fiance duane just before he left his german post for korea. they wrote letters and then she heard he was a prisoner of war. >> awful. terrified. and i always went to the forest with the stroller and cried in there. >> reporter: time went on

without word. >> when you work and build your family -- he was never out of my mind. >> reporter: margaret's first daughter had a son chris and he found out about their monthly meetings held in different cities around the country. this is all part of a program the military started back in 1995 to reach out to the families of p.o.w. mi.a. service members. some 88,000 families. the program put chris in contact with his grandfather's sister who lived in new york. >> to speak with her for the first time and tell a little bit of who i am and to learn a little bit about who my grandfather is was a really amazing moment. >> reporter: now back to those letters. they are now being tested for duane's d.n.a. margaret's was taken since she had been handling them all of these years. chris' d.n.a. was also swabbed since he is the soldier's relatives. even if duane's remains are never found margaret is glad

there had been speculation that de the oakland mayor insisting he will finish out his term. there had been speculation that he would leave early. perhaps to take a lobbying job in washington, dc. he owes $252,000 in backs taxes and he can't accept outside work while still in office. mayor-elect jean quan denied

any of his plans to leave early. >> the mayor issued a statement and it is clear that he plans to complete his term. we are starting a series of meetings over the next few weeks. so i don't think he is going anywhere. rumors about the mayor's early departure were fueled by his decision to cancel his out going state of the city address and post it online instead. well, in the midst of all the speculation about prince william's wedding, british royal watchers now have something else to buzz about. this time as mark phillips reports, it has to do with the status of the prince's stepmother. >> reporter: kate and william are keeping the world waiting again. this time for the details and when and where their marriage will take place. but some leftover business from another royal marriage, the one five years between william's father prince charles and the then camilla parker bowles has filled the information void. then because of misgivings about camilla, who had after

all been the other woman in charles' doomed marriage to diana charles let it known when he became king camilla would only be a princess and not a queen, the normal title for a king's wife. now charles seems to be reconsidering making camilla queen after all. charles' musician have provided musings have taken the focus off william and kate's wedding. the smart money is still on westminster abbey as the site for the ceremony. despite the sad memories of william's mother diana's funeral there. as for the style of william and kate's wedding, look for something perhaps a little less dramatic than the wedding of williams' parents wedding at
