. you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. >> for the second time in two days, a missing girl is found safe in the bay area. how a missing 15-year-old girl from shasta county was found and her uncle was arrested. be careful tonight. a dense fog advisory is now in effect. what the communities are under this advisory. and more important, how long will it stick around. the pinpoint forecast is just seconds away. he was found hanging from a pipe in the living-room of the apartment. >> bernie madoff's son fell to pressure. the early sign that made his wife believe that there was something wrong. the first of its kind in the world. a bay area man gets the key now to new nissan. >> if you have plans to be out and about tonight, be careful,

drive slowly a dense fog warning is in effect for the bay area. robert is in for lawrence kyle. >> good evening, ann. that is exactly right. visibility is expected to be less than a half a mile. so the national weather service has issued a dense fog advisory. as we take a live look at the approach of the golden gate bridge, you can see that the fog is already beginning to envelope the coastline and it is quickly moving in towards the communities along san francisco bay. but this fog will be pretty insidious as we take a look. it is expected to move into the valleys, into north bay, the south bay and the east bay. and it is expected that this fog is going to last at least through 9 a.m. and with that much fog out there, it also means poor air quality. and that is signaling a winter spare the air alert for your

sunday. much more on what you can expect. and even some rain in the forecast when we come back in just minutes. ann, back to you. >> robert, thank you. what are the chances in just 24 hours two girls allegedly abducted in separate kidnappings both found case. the police got their first break. >> reporter: in two unrelated cases just 24 hours apart, two missing girls, both underaged and beth in the company of older men turn up safely in san francisco. the men they were with now both are in custody. today it was 15-year-old marie burlinghoff missing for a month from her shasta area seen by a sharp-eyed relative. >> a family member happened to be in the area and spotted the juvenile female victim. that's what prompted this relative to contact the police who obviously knew that their relative was missing out of

shasta. >> even more remarkable was the discovery yesterday of 12-year- old brittney may smith missing for a week from her home in ron observing, virginia. a long shot but a shopper in this safeway store near san francisco in ocean beach recognized the child from a cable t.v. program. >> this is one of those cases like yesterday where the right place, the right time someone very observant and atime active and the great work of the police department. >> the man and child apparently were living in an end camp the near ocean beach. roanoak says the two may have been living with the homeless. >> you are saying they were there with some type after cardboard sign. i understand that they were asking for money. >> reporter: brittney and 32- year-old jeffrey scott easely had last been seen december 3 railroad in a will with a mart store in salem, virginia, about five miles from roanoak. brittney's mother who was easely's girlfriend was found

dead in what police consider to be a homicide. easely is under arrest for kidnapping and awaiting extradition. brittney is safe and being cared for by child protective services. the relatives called this a ray of sunshine. >> now that we have her for christmas she will be here to tell her mother good by. she will be able to tell her mother rest in peace tonight. >> reporter: detectives have arrived in san francisco tonight to take over the case of jeffrey scott easely and brittney smith. while detectives from redding are here to investigate the case of marie burlinghoff and her uncle. thank you very much. two armed robbers wearing ski masks tied up a worker at a north bay college. the suspects broke into the barns and noble bookstore on the salem university campus at 7:15 this morning. the men were carrying handguns. after the robbery, the tied-up employee managed to call the police. the campus notification system

sent out alerts to 15,000 people notifying them of what happened and telling them stay inside. >> i was pretty scared because i didn't, like, i didn't know what was going on. we just get this random call telling us not to leave, that two people have just robbed our bookstore. and it was kind of crazy. >> 15 minutes later, the school sent out another alert saying it was safe to go out again. all classes and business resumed as scheduled. police searched the campus but did not find the suspects. no word yet on how much money was stolen. antioch police are looking for a hit and run driver who killed a woman in a crosswalk. investigators say the victim was crossing at the intersection of lemontree way and l street last night. she was hit when a minivan drove around a car that had stopped. the woman died of head injuries. witnesses say the minivan appeared to be dark blue or purple. a call to action in san francisco to curb the epidemic of gay bullying and suicides.

hundreds of students attended the youth empowerment summit today. the gay straight alliance network says it is not enough to say it gets better later. students, teachers and community members need to do something to make it better now for young gay people. >> it is shameful. no young person should have to suffer through middle school or high school and face name calling and bullying every single day and contemplate suicide as a result of it. so we are working to end the isolation and give everyone the tools so we can make it better. this year the conference featured the make it better project. young people making videos that include ways to make life easier for gay and lesbian students. those videos are then posted online. violent a parking law in the east bay and you will soon start paying more. fines in oakland will increase by $3 starting january 3rd. that will cover an increase in the state surcharge. just last year the oakland city council raised fines as well as the parking meter rates. the counsellors are waiting until next month to impose a

new fine so it can let people know about the increase. also in oakland, city workers who don't have direct deposit will get these instead of paper checks. debit cards that will have the amount of their paycheck loaded on each pay period. the city says it's doing this to go green as well as cut the costs. the debit card option has been available since last year. but now it's mandatory for those who refuse to use direct deposit. >> the son of disgraced financier madoff has committed suicide. mark madoff was upset over continuing press coverage of his father's case and an ongoing criminal case of family members, including himself. mark madoff killed himself on the second anniversary of his father's arrest. mark madoff took his own life exactly two years after his father's arrest. >> mark madoff was found hanging from a pipe in the living-room of the apartment. >> police say sometime

overnight the 46-year-old madoff e-mailed his wife who was out of town. she sent her father over to the apartment where he discovered the body. the couple's 2-year-old son was asleep in a bedroom unharmed. >> have you talked to your dad? >> no comment, i'm sorry. >> that was mark madoff in 2009. he and his brother andrew worked for their father's company but said they had no idea he was running a multibillion dollars poncy scheme. when it collapsed bernard madoff confessed to his son, who then called the fbi. he is now serving a 150 year sentence in federal prison. mark madoff and his brother were never charged. they were under investigation and victims of the madoff scam were suing them for tens of millions of dollars. a court appointed trustee was seeking to recover millions they had spent on luxury homes. another lawsuit filed just this week saw money from therapy young children. mark madoff's attorney released a statement saturday calling him an innocent victim of his father's crimes and blaming his death on two years of unrelenting pressure from false

accusations and innuendo. >> the federal bureau of prisons will have to decide whether to allowed bernard madoff to attend his own son's funeral. am brown, cbs news, new york. >> dip richard holbrook is in stable but critical after undergoing 20 hours of surgery for a torn aorta. he is the special envoy for afghanistan and pakistan collapsed during a meeting with secretary of state hillary clinton. president obama called him a towering figure in foreign policy and praying for his recovering. even if the surgery is successful recovery could take a long time. keeping kids safely from potentially harmful toys. what they are doing to keep tainted products out of childrens' hands. also ahead, the deadline looming if the bay area wants to host the america's cup re gat at that. a bay area man becomes the owner of the world's first mass produced all electric car. show you the new nissan leech.

over 20,000 with tax credits. he ordered it in august a. and last night it arrived in petaluma. >> just surreal. you almost have to pinch yourself wondering, am i really watching this? of course the key is keeping an electrical charge. the city of san francisco plans to have 100 of these charging stations in place within the next few months. >> reporter: are you ever concerned you are going to run out of a charge? >> i am thinking about it now. i have got to get it home. >> reporter: one charge lasts for less than 100 miles. the stations are funded through taxes and grants. drivers won't be charged for the juice or the parking. the rules are still being worked out. >> what we are doing now is really making the market ready for the electric vehicle technology. >> reporter: cars like the more extravagant tesla roadster the first all electric car which costs around $100,000. within the next few weeks more mass market competition for the leaf. the chevy volt uses gas when the battery runs down. as for the leaf if you join the

waiting list now you will be lucky to get one by the end of next year. in san francisco, this is cbs 5. >> a free screening today in san mateo for toxic metals in childrens' products. parents brought in childrens' jewelry, toys and other products with painted surfaces. these items were being tested for harmful levels of certain metals that can be hazardous to your childrens' health. representative jackie spear became involved when a constituent brought to her attention a shrek glass given away at mcdonalds that had toxic levels of cad many people. >> if i'm hearing about it i had my staff go out and buy these glasses. called the consumer product safety commission. they came and picked them up. within ten days mcdonald had decided to withdraw all of this product from their stores. she introduced legislation to protect children from hazardous levels of chemicals and toxins. the clock is am ticking on

america hosting the next america's cup. the sailing is currently held by oracle ceo barry ellison. he gets to pick the next city. san francisco is lobbying hard but so is newport rhode island and at least one other venue. san francisco has been told it will lose the right to host the next america's cup unless an agreement is signed by next friday. robert is back talking about the fog and some rain in the forecast. >> that is exactly right. as a matter of fact, a very warm day has revealed a very mild night. as we take a live look behind us at the embarcadero, the fog is already moving in. and that's truly the news story tonight. it's all been courtesy of a lot of warm temperatures out there and some still very soggy soil. just how mild is it? 55 in san ramone. 52 for napa. and 51 in palo alto. combine those are soggy soil left over from last week's rain

and that's why we are seeing the fog. here is the pinpoint weather. we talked about that dense fog advisory. and it is going to remain in place first for the coastline. then along san francisco. and then easily making its way into the valleys of the north, south and east bay and will remain in effect until 9 a.m. because of all of that fog out there, we are expecting very poor air quality. so a winter spare the air day is in effect throughout sunday. the worst air quality in the santa clara valley where it will be incredibly unhealthy. looking at a building ridge of high pressure. a low pressure is staying well to the pacific northwest. as that high pressure begins to build over the bay area, we will begin to see a little bit more clearing first in the morning. if you are living out in the tri-valley area begin to see some hazy sun probably around

11 is:00. wait until tomorrow morning expected to be completely draped with fog. as we get the clock rolling slowly it begins to start burning off for the tri-valley, north bay. see some fog along the coastline. that will be the weather story for tomorrow. with the exception of some very mild temperatures. 66 in oakland. 65 in san francisco. 65 in livermore as well. i talked about the rain. we will begin to see the march of clouds late monday into tuesday. the temperatures also begin to drop. by wednesday, however, we expect to see some more clouds. clearing conditions. but by thursday, expect the march of clouds to return. that means for friday the end of your business week, we are lacking at the likelihood of a possible rain-out. the showers we expect on tuesday will likely be in the north bay and might make their way down to the south bay but the computer models aren't sure yet. >> the weekend could be really bad. >> it looks like it will be. >> thank you, robert.

>> absolutely. >> our weather of course a far cry from what's going on in the upper midwest. roads are closed in tie states because of a powerful winter storm. up to 20 inches of snow has fallen in many areas. temperatures near zero could be right around the corner. liz colins shows us the white pre christmas. liquor liquor a large and powerful storm is blanketing the upper midwest with nearly two feet of snow. strong winds are gusting at 50 miles per hour are creating blizzard-like conditions from south dakota to minnesota. residents here in minneapolis are trying to stay ahead of the 18 inches expected to pile up by the storm's end. >> it's rough. it's really rough. and all of this snow doesn't make it any better. >> reporter: it's complete white-out conditions. officials have ordered snowplows off the streets and are warning people to stay inside. three major highways are closed. along i-29. winds and icy roads caused dozens of spin-outs and accidents. in duluth, tugboats are desperately breaking up a freezing lake superior. minneapolis international is

shut down. and more than 600 flights have been cancelled. >> it's just getting from bad to worse right now. >> reporter: chicago is expected to get hit with three inches as the storm heads east, dumping more snow along the great lakes and rain along the east coast. but an arctic blast is not far behind. starting tomorrow across the plains and upper midwest, the temperatures will be near zero with wind chills making it feel like 30 below zero in someplaces. >> a quick freeze-up. so we will go from wet and slushy conditions to just pure ice. and then the blowing snow will add to the problems. >> reporter: already this storm will go down in the top ten in state history. it's been 11 years since minnesota has seen this much snow from one storm. in minneapolis, liz colins, for cbs news. up next, two bombings in sweden. and they are being called terrorist attacks. . an emotional farewell today to elizabeth edwards. the estranged wife of former presidential candidate john edwards lost her six year battle with breast cancer on tuesday. the funeral for a woman who endured so much and lived through so much. >> reporter: her oldest daughter 28-year-old kate give an emotional eulogy. >> she has been a lighthouse to all of us a point of guidance when we feel lost or don't know what the right thing to do is. >> john attended the funeral but did not speak at the service. he tried to comfort their two- year-old children. in recent years the family has weathered two failed presidential campaigns, elizabeth's battle with breast cancer and her husband's very public affair. through it all, friends say elizabeth edwards hung on to her positive outlook on life. >> elizabeth remained the same wonderfully authentic person, a

pro at staying true. [ music ] >> reporter: her funeral took place at the same church where the family mourned their oldest son wade who died in a car accident in 1996 when he was just 16. four of wade's friends served as her pal bearers. after the family said their final good-byes. >> emma, jack and i ended every conversation with our mom by saying i love you more. she always responded no, i love you more. and as you can imagine, none of us ever won that battle. but today i have the honor of being the last to say, mom, i really, really love you more. >> reporter: among the hundreds of mourner where is some who never met elizabeth but said they were touched by the way she lived her life. cbs news. sarah palin is in haiti tonight in a tightly staged managed visit. avoiding the crowds and the media. the former alaskan government

and 2008 vice-presidential president visited cholera clinics. it is amid a cholera visit that has killed 200,000 people and sickened 100,000 others. haiti has recovered from the earthquakes and now there are riots from the presidential election primary results. swedish officials are calling two explosions that shook stock home a terrorist attack. one person was killed in a second blast and two people were wounded. police believe the man found dead at the site may have accidentally blown himself up. the explosions happened after a swedish news agency received a threatening letter from about sweden's military presence in afghanistan. and a caricature of the prophet mohamed. >> they handed out the award of the hesman's to andrew luck. you got to love it. looking for another title and berth to the open bowl. sports is up next. le do you have to save?
