a tree falls into a house on the peninsula-- and roads are flooded in most every region. torrential d a messy day. roads are flooded in most every region. tensionalneighborhoods under water. >> everybody had to unload and we were late for the game. >> what caused a closure of the transbay tube today that made fans late for the raider game. history is made tonight with the uconn women's basketball team. the winning streak that is staggering. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. still some heavy downpours out there. even some reports of thunder and lightening. marin county earlier this evening. we can expect a break in the rain through most of tomorrow but get ready. another gully washer is on the way. earlier today around the bay area the heavy rain caused

flooding, power outages downed trees and accidents. don knapp is along the embarkadaro in san francisco where the rain has really been heavy at times. >> reporter: that's right, ann. this on again, off again storm keeps catching us by surprise. it is almost perfectly dry here the next minute wham. the rain came in fits and starts sometimes so heavy windshield wipers and storm drains couldn't keep up. flooding low lying areas that usually ends up under water in heavy rains. the storm and lightening caught us by surprise as we waited to do a live report later in the evening. we are dropping the mass. we are dropping the mass. we are in a lightening storm here. >> reporter: earlier in the day rain backed up water in bay shore and redwood city cutting off access to residents who waited for fire department pumps to clear the flood. tree branches came down on fire

lines in other areas as well. while the san francisco peninsula, this tree came down not only bringing down the power lines but slammed into this home. there were no injuries. water that came up fast was trouble for motorists all around the bay. this low lying area in marin county always seems to flood in heavy rain. highway patrol officers spotted this stranded motorist, hit the flashers came around an got the car out of the water. eventually taking off like a speed boat to answer more serious calls. here in west marin at shore lion wind brought down a tree and the tree brought down a power pole. the company should have all the homes back online about 3:00 a.m. or 4:00 a.m.

>> don, we will check with you at 11:00 p.m. on cbs5 to see if you are in a downpour or not. >> i think if you wait a few minutes i will be. flooding is doing more than cause headaches in the east bay, it is causing major damage to one homeowner's property, so much so, we are told it is causing the home's value to plummet. >> 15 inches. over 15 inches right there. >> reporter: jason myers' wife captured this home video of water more than a foot deep outside their house in richmond. >> what are you going to do but laugh? maybe it will bring attention to the city. >> reporter: a homeowner horror store myers and his family have been dealing with every time it rains due to a faulty drainage system. >> do we want to go through another winter? i don't think so. but what are you going to do? >> reporter: stormy weather caused other problems around the bay area. strong winds and rain took down

this tree on battery street in san francisco and a huge puddle of standing water partially flooded this on ramp in richmond. in berkeley some folks took advantage of a break in the rain to get outside for a walk on the beach. the wind is kind of hard. it is kind of hard core. kind of hurts the eyes. >> reporter: over in oakland there was still a lineup to grab three sandbags and plastic sheeting. joseph woke up to a flooded basement. >> and as you can see i have been dealing with it all night. i lost my voice. i hope i don't get sick again. >> reporter: it is a problem myers knows all too well. >> here are some of the shoes that we have lost due to mold. >> reporter: although the water has never seeped into his living area he says the moisture has caused damage. he estimates his home has flooded 30 times. >> all the way up to the end of the sandbags. >> reporter: he bought the home

for $260,000 almost eight years ago at an estate sale but a recent assessment valued it at only $4000. >> we expected some dry rot, so on, so forth, but no one ever expected this. >> reporter: in the east bay, cbs5. >> jim is in for lawrence karnow tonight. >> kind of hit or miss rain activities as don mentioned. we will look for isolated cells with thunderstorm buildups. tonight periods of heavy downpours but should be brief as those cells will move off quickly. it crossed he remember this morning left an inch or two and now sinking to the south. here is a look at the computer model expectations for the returns over the next 24 hours. as you can see moderate cells still crossing the north bay with light returns showing up in the greater bay area however

a few isolated cells are roaming around that will produce some heavy downpours in and around the bay area into tomorrow morning. so be prepared for this activity to continue through the evening hours. tapering off a bit through tomorrow afternoon and tuesday and then by tuesday night into wednesday comes the next round of some measurable rain for the area which could amount to an inch or two for the greater bay area. after that another one come christmas. we will take a look at that coming up in your complete forecast in just a few minutes. >> thank you, jim. well, southern california is getting hit hard too. severe weather and flood warning is in effect in bakersfield and the rain is expected to continue through tuesday morning. more than two days of steady rain left many residential areas flooded. one neighborhood is under 3 feet of water. several communities in the area opened emergency operation centers for people who need help. and there are still delays

on barr tonight after electrical problems created spoke in the transbay tube. the malfunction forced the closure of two for inspection and right now b.a.r.t is single tracking trains through the tube. riders can still expect delays heading to the east bay. >> we always enjoyed b.a.r.t but that was the first time it stopped. one stop before the coliseum. we had nothing but raider fans. we were wondering why in the heck can't they just drop us off at the coliseum and then back up. you know what i mean? >> they made it to the game a bit late but they say their ride back was more enjoyable since the raiders won. it is still not known when b.a.r.t will be back to normal. in san bruno today a community meeting to keep residents informed about the

investigation into the september pipeline explosion. congresswoman jackie spear and members of the city council hosted this meeting. representatives of pg&e and ntsb were there to answer questions. before the meeting some neighbors said they had plenty of questions and that pg&e was avoiding answering them. >> pg&e guys say last month we can talk to them and now they say it is two weeks. don't tell me one thing and say another thing. this is over and over again. >> we would have like more answers from the ntsb as to of course what happened on the pipeline. >> the san francisco chronicle reported today that an audit of pg&e pipelines was performed four months before the september explosion saying they took shortcuts on the high pressure natural gas pipeline. a storm is brewing in the

california school system. just as the population is growing a wave of teacher is leaving and fewer people are seeking credentials to fill those vacancies. lots of current teachers are retiring and it will mean a shortage of students that can teach science and math in elementary school. this morning a magnitude 3.1 in the area in the 6:00 p.m. hour this evening there was a 2.4 and 2.6 in the same area all too small to cause any damage. >> so we are getting back to our storm coverage in just a minute. we will take it to the sierra. with a look at all that snow. >> it is not just california bearing the brunt of the storm. a number of cars slipping and sliding into each other. the uconn girl's basketball

sliding into each other on an ice- covered road. this is spokane, washi we are so lucky not to have to deal with this. several cars slipping and sliding into each other on an ice covered road. this is spokane, washington. drivers were trying to go up a hill. as you can see they are not quite making this. this bumper car session went on for several hours until people in the area closed the street down themselves and they waitedded for city crews to come and clear the street. road conditions in the sierra were treacherous as well today. blue canyon drivers were inching along cautiously. >> reporter: the roads remaining treacherous tonight. >> it is slippery. it is slidey. very icy. >> reporter: dealing with icy

surfaces and dealing with visible forcing them to make the crawl up and down many scrambling like this gu for their chains. >> i'm going to do it now before the next set of storms come in. >> reporter: this man from oak realizing he should have gotten a better set. >> trains on the truck kept slipping stuff like that. that's what i get for getting crappy chains. >> reporter: while it was snow and ice up the hill earlier down the hill made for a nasty ride as well. slushy wet runoff hitting the pavement sending a number of cars spinning as is the case with this so-called pile up. >> and then they got crashed into each other and we had no option other than pull off the road. so that's how we got stuck in there. >> reporter: so some advice. if you want to come up here know what you're in for. like this man who actually just came from australia. >> 24 hours ago i was on a beach in 100 degrees and now it

is, what, 28 degrees right now. bit of a change of climate. >> all right. jim, you said earlier this weekend that it looked like we were going to get snow in epic proportions. >> they are talking 8 to 10 feet in the high country just this weekend. as you noted there it is wet snow which means high avalanche danger will likely prevail into the week and also travel over there is a crawl across i-80. so not the best of conditions but there is plenty of snow on the ground and it will be around for a while i'm sure. as we see a break in the rain action across the bay right now. high-definition doppler. a few returns showing up on radar. this is again the isolated thunderstorm activity that we witnessed here through the night as we will see these roaming cells hit or miss type activity crossing the region. could be some heavy downpours within these cells but they won't last long they will be brief as they move through the area. a few showing up in the south bay down around san jose as well.

so far most of the activity has been in the north bay where we saw some cells cross earlier in richmond out towards concord and we have got a couple more headed our way out there this evening. we are seeing a bit of a change in our position in this pattern if you will. the river of warm moisture has moved off to the south and as we take a look at the satellite image here which we will go to right now you see that that extensive band extends 1000 miles wide and within that band there is definitely heavy rain which has been wandering around the bay area on and off through the week. we got hit with it this morning, left an inch or two in its wake. now we are kind of on the northern edge of it as that river of moisture sinks to the south leaving us in the cold air mass behind it which in this kind of an unstable pattern is where you tend to see the scattered showers and

isolated thunderstorm pattern. that will be tonight into tomorrow. then come wednesday we will see moisture move our way with steadier rain expected. as i said earlier we will hang on to the scattered activity. could be moderate snows in there but should be brief as they move through the region and we will keep this type of pattern in place right on through tomorrow with temperatures staying pretty flat. mid-50s here for the next few days as we won't see much of a warm up at all until we get a little more sunshine which we should see by thursday into friday. but by late friday night into christmas day comes another wave of moisture that promises to bring some measurable precipitation into the region so looks like we have got basically three waves here. one for tomorrow and then wednesday and saturday we will see the next rounds of rain.

the outskirts of town in part to deflect efforts to build a facility in downtown. the offer is only good until wednesday. residents have protested constructing a 768-bed jail downtown because there is already one downtown. the america's cup regetta may not happen. san francisco put in its bid last week and is considered a favorite since ellison will decide the next venue. that injured sea line named silent knight is no longer silent. the six-year-old is recovering from pellet gun wounds to its face. silent knight is responding to his care takers and the swelling on his head is going down. they are still concerned though about his appetite. the silent knight was found on december 8. he got his name for

being a strong silent type when he was found. the university of conneticut women's basketball today won its 88th game in a row. and that win puts the team in some very select company. this week the teen could make history. >> reporter: uconn took the early lead with a three-pointer and never looked back. the huskies rolled over ohio state for their 88th straight victory tying the record for most consecutive wins set by ucla's men's team almost four decades ago. >> today was an opportunity for them to do something that everybody is going to remember including them. >> especially them. >> leading his team to seven national championships but his players know this win will be remembered. >> we knew, i think, that this was a special game. and we used it and we used it

at $2.68 a gallon. the u.s. postal service is preparing for its busiest day of the year. tomorrow. monday is also the recommended deadline for sending greeting cards and holiday letters if you want them to arrive in time for christmas. if you can't make tomorrow's deadline priority mail can be sent tuesday. express mail can be sent wednesday and still make it in time they say. they expected 800 million pieces of mail, a 40% increase in the average daily volume. this is an implosion that almost didn't go off as planned. >> two buildings at the historic imperial sugar refinery in sugarland, texas, came down as expected but as you can see the other building it didn't move. in fact, two attempts to implode it failed.

after a few minutes it did come down on its own but here is the really scary part. the investigators went into the second building to figure out what went wrong. they started to hear some creeking. they ran out and they did make it out in time. like the 49ers you keep waiting for them to implode but the building never comes down. it is incredible. niners making the playoffs. raiders try and keep their playoff hopes alive at the coliseum next. le do you have to save?
