you're watching cbs 5 eyewitness news on the cw. he has kind of a troubled past, i can tell you that. and we're not convinced that he acted alone. >> the search for a second person of interest in the attempted assassination of a congresswoman. what we now know about the gunman. and we stand before you in the -- with the deepest sadness for the act of violence. >> members of congress shaken by the attack, their reaction to the shooting and gunfire up in the east bay. a young boy is found shot to death. good evening. paying tribute to the victims of the killing spree in arizona. tonight, well-wishers are empathering outside the hospital where congresswoman gabrielle giffords is recovering. she was shot in the head today. gunfire struck 18 others, killing six of them. we are joined by tucson w very

latest. what are you learning tonight? >> all evening long, there have been vigils for congresswoman giffords. all the way from here to washington, d.c., she is a very, very popular politician, and we are also learning more this evening about the suspect. we are told by neighbors that he was a loner who lives with his parents and kept to himself. >> reporter: paramedics rushed the victims of the shooting rampage to waiting helicopters, the devastating result after a gunman opened fire at a town hall meeting held by u.s. representative gabrielle giffords. >> i was 3 feet from her. >> the gunman began just spraying everybody at pointblank range. >> reporter: the sheriff says giffords was the target of the shooting that happened just after 10:00 this morning outside a grocery store in northwest

tucson. doctors say the bullet that hit her went in one side of her head and out of the other. >> she is in critical condition. i'm very optimistic about recovery. >> reporter: those who died include an aide to giffords and a federal judge who had stopped by to say hello to giffords. the gunman is identified as 22-year-old jared layoffner of tucson. he was tackled by two bystanders, which ended the gunfire. >> law enforcement described the suspect as a troubled man with a criminal background. he used a semiautomatic pistol to take down as many people as possible. >> reporter: layoffner posted videos of the abuse of power and may have left goodbye messages on the internet. a large crowd gathered at the hospital in tucson for a vigil to mourn the victims.

>> i can't believe that this could happen. >> reporter: authorities are searching for a person of interest who may have gone to the supermarket with the suspect. >> and investigators are confirming to cbs news that weapon used in the attack was a glaucsemiautomatic pistol with an extended capacity magazine, which means he had about 30 rounds to use. it was purchased legally at a local gun store just five weeks ago. reporting live in tucson, arizona, i'm karen brown, back to you. >> what do you know about this myspace page. there was a goodbye message posted on it. >> you know,, in fact, federal officials confirmed to us that they are looking at the so-called goodbye messages that he had posted. he apparently said goodbye to his friends and asked them not to hate him, so they're poring over that information as well as some videos posted to

youtube where he went on antigovernment rants about currency and literacy and power, so they are looking into the social networking sites and the internet to piece together how this happened, when it came together and if he did have an accomplice. >> any word tonight whether or not it's a friend, a relative? >> the police are being a little bit cagey. they say that they know who he is, they have a name, they have a picture that he's a white male in his 50s, but they say they are not releasing that information, and what was interesting in the beginning of the investigation, they said he was a suspect spen a person of interest. they don't believe that the shooter showed up at the store that you see here behind me alone. >> there's a lot of information coming in. i don't know the validity of this. supposedly there was a suspicious package found at the congresswoman's office after the shooting. is that true? >> in fact, the sheriff said

that indeed there was an emergency evacuation of the congresswoman's office after a suspicious package was found. they considered it a bomb threat, so at this point, that has been over with. they haven't really given us any more information about what they found and why they felt there needed to be that evacuation other than the suspicious package. >> thanks for keeping us up to date. a former classmates of the alleged gunman described him as a pot-smoking loner. they said he was obviously very disturbed and the army said that he tried to enlist in december of 2008, but he was rejected. they didn't say why. a year before that, layoffner was cite -- giffords has said that she believes gun ownership is a

right, and she objected to a proposed gun ban in washington, d.c. in a case taken up by the supreme court. she narrowly beat a tea party favorite. house minority leader nancy pelosi led a moment of silence. and in san francisco, we have reactions from pelosi and other local representatives. >> reporter: what was to be a bright new year's celebration began under a cloud. >> and we stand before you in the -- with the deepest sadness for the act of violence that was committed against our colleague, congresswoman gabrielle giffords, her staff, her constituents, and now we know a federal judge, as well. >> reporter: former speaker nancy pelosi told the gathering that giffords is a great

patriotic american. >> as i thank all of you, my constituents, let us join in prayer with gabrielle giffords' constituents and arizona as well who have suffered a terrible loss today. >> reporter: congressman george miller told us americans do differ politically. >> but we also maintain that that's the distinction that you can go from president clinton to president bush to president obama to speaker pelosi to speaker boehner and nobody fired a shot. >> reporter: congressman john garamendi suggests the motive may be political. >> emotions are hot in arizona, they are across the nation, but during the last campaign and the runup to the health care bill, the office was attacked, and he was threatened. many others across the nation, democrats that voted for that were threatened. >> reporter: he says he saw first-hand the change of politics during the fight over

health care reform in washington. >> and there are several hundred people outside with signs saying kill pelosi. out of the chamber, several members of congress went out on the balcony and cheered them on. >> reporter: it is he says time for america to reflect. >> as elected members of congress, those that went out and rallied increased the heat amongst that crowd, should also reflect. >> pelosi praised fellow democrats for striking down don't ask don't tell, and health care reform. while she did not suggest any motives for the shootings, she says she will fight any effort to overturn the health care law. well, reaction from the rest of the bay area area. spiers called her a talented and rising star. she said this is unspeak only

-- unspeakable. barbara lee called it a reprehensible act of violence. their thoughts and prayers are with congresswoman giffords and her family and staff. u.s. chief justices condemned the loss of john rules. in a statement from the supreme court justice, they said his death is a somber reminder of the importance of the rule of law. and the 9-year-old girl killed in the shooting is identified as christina green. a neighbor took her to the event, because she thought christina would enjoy it. she was involved in many activities from ballet to baseball. crowds are gathering tonight at the scene of a fatal shooting in oakland that claimed the life of a teenager. police said the victim was shot and killed this evening at the

corner of 67th and saganaw. they believe he was 15 years old. police are looking for a male suspect with a gun. police say alcohol may have played a role in a hit-and-run accident that put a 15-year-old girl in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. the victim's girlfriend was arrested for being drunk in public. police say the couple was in a crosswalk after 1:00 a.m. when she was hit. and police now are looking for a silver or gray japanese make vehicle. police say it's unclear if the unidentified victim had the right of way. it appears she was under the influence when she was hit. taking a stand in her own city. jean quan walks the streets to take back the streets. oakland's new mayor gets down to work on her first weekend on

mayor jean quan and the assistant police chief went door to door. >> it's one of our toughest weeks. >> reporter: it's where six people were shot earlier this week at 89th and b. street, a block from where we met her. >> i think it's very scary because all the shooting is scary to me so every time i hear bullets, i hide in my room. >> reporter: the area is racked with poverty. only three out of 10 boys graduate high school. >> our goal here is to get the neighborhood itself organized so that i don't have to come out here and knock on their doors every day. but, you know, if i have to, i will. >> reporter: quan's letting people know about a new library, though, it already has a broken window. she's starting a school for new parents and opening a free clinic paid for with grants. >> it makes a difference. something that can change the way things are. >> you've got to have a clean heart, and really want to do

have made me a part of their community and their family. >> one of the board's first orders of business will be to vote on the city's interim mayor. ed lee is expected to be formally approved after newsom is sworn in on monday. home-owners in orange county are literally on edge while grabbing stuff from their red-tagged houses. the hillside behind six homes gave way two nights ago, and today, they allowed supervised trips into the home. more land might crumble. our meteorologist joining us with i hope there's some sunshine somewhere in that forecast of yours. >> but oddly enough, we're going to need the rain in here. but tonight, we've got that soupy mix out there again. some dense fog, not much in the way of wind and, of course, the

moisture. so things pretty stable in the atmosphere, that fog widespread all across the bay area. it looks like it's going to clear out a little bit earlier tomorrow afternoon, cold front diving in across the bay area today, not strong enough to mix out the low clouds, but we are going to see some drier air shift in behind this it looks like by tomorrow afternoon. so with that in mind, tomorrow, it will be a little bit warmer in spots, still cool i think inland, highs in the 40s and 50s with that patchy, dense fog. by the afternoon, we're going to sneak in a little bit more sunshine, especially in the bay and the coast line. 39 degrees, 45 in san francisco right now, but high pressure looks like it's breaking down just a little bit as that trough moves on through here, that cold air going to start to move in, but we've got some dense fog to deal with tonight, and these visibilities like to drop down to less than a quarter of a mile. 7:00 a.m., the fog is the story. but in the afternoon, maybe a little bit more normal pattern.

well, try to squeeze in a little bit more sunshine, and if that happens, and temperatures warm up, about 55 degrees in san jose, 54 in freemont, and some cool 40s in the valleys. next couple of days, i think a little more sun on the way. a little less fog and by tuesday, there's a chance of rain returning to the bay area. that will get rid of the fog, and it looks like it could stay unsettled and wet not only tuesday, but about for the remainder of the week after that. >> all right. thank you. well, the annual consumer electronics show in las vegas is winding down. you like that? well, one thing is clear, it's a big year for 3d tvs. we hear what other trends emerge for this year. >> reporter: you can't walk anywhere at the show without catching a glimpse of a 3d tv. they're one of the biggest crazes at this year's event. >> the tv manufacturers have built these fantastic-looking

tests. they replicate the theater experience. >> reporter: they are designed to wow. check out this 3d tv. 152 inches. panasonic won't tell us the price, but it's large, as well. until recently, you had to watch 3d tvs with expensive glasses, but you'll find cheaper ones, and even 3d tvs that don't need glasses at all. >> you can watch regular content. >> reporter: some technology is close to a year away from hitting the market and analysts say they're still working out the kinks. >> until they change the law of physics or how humans perceive 3d i think we're going to be stuck with you have to wear the glasses or exactly within this one or 2 degrees to enjoy the content. >> reporter: but consumers seem hesitant. >> i think it will be a niche market. >> i hope it takes off. >> reporter: it's going to be

the former cal star took it 67 yards, pete carol called it the greatest run he had ever season, the seahawks win. payton manning could do nothing but stand on the sidelines. a 32-yarder, his time expired, sending the jets to the second round. they beat the colts 17-16. the gales knock down 15 threes, they blow out the waves to improve to 14-2. cal jumped out to an early lead against arizona state and hung on down the stretch for their first win, they beat the sun devils 65-71. and the sharks lost their fourth straight game at the tank. what's going on? nashville beat the sharks by the count of 2-1. there you go. caught up on everything. one major upset in the nfl. >> are they going to win the super bowl, the seahawks?
