>> i walked up. all i saw was chaos. lots of people moving around. people on the ground. first responders to the tucson shooting tell us their reaction when they got there and today that safeway store reopens one week after the mass err -- after the massacre. the sight few will ever forget. a passenger plane floating on the hudson river after a successful splashdown. what captain scully now says about the miracle on the hudson two years to the day. how crews rescued dozens of chilly people from a ski lift that got stuck. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. robbery and ended with one man being killed. bank the west was being robbed. the suspect left the bank and was chased by police. now, officers say the two suspects in the car were firing at police. the chase ended after arizona street and dow avenue. the driver was arrested. but police say the passenger ran into the backyard of a home while shooting at police. he was later found dead of a gunshot wound to the head in that yard. right now it is not clear if he was hit by police or if he shot himself. well, one week after last saturday's deadly shooting in tucson there are signs of remembrance and moving forward. the tributes to the victims and heros of the tragedy now. >> reporter: at the scene of the shooting outside a tucson supermarket employees and shoppers paused for a painful moment of silence. exactly a week after the gunfire and blood shed.

>> i'm sorry. i was thinking of all the heros that were here that day and in our store. >> reporter: the supermarket reopened this morning for the first time since the shooting and for employees returning to work meant confronting disturbing memories. when she heard the gunfire sheila ran out of the store and found 9-year-old christina green near death and the woman beside her severely wounded. >> she was bleeding. i could just see the blood coming out of her stomach. still can see that. and i told her you need to lay down. your little girl is going to be fine. lay down. you shouldn't be moving. >> i walked up and all i saw was chaos. lots of people moving around. people on the ground. >> reporter: the paramedic one of the first on the scene and had to separate the living from the dead. >> it was tough. it was very tough. i'll admit it right now when i got up there my mind went a little bit blank for awhile. >> reporter: what liz garrett chose to remember was not the alreadior but the heroism. >> there were people that were

elderly that jumped in to could so much. that just spoke volumes about people and what they are willing to do to help others. >> reporter: friends and family today remembered another of the six who were killed. funeral for 79-year-old mother of three and grandmother of seven. a week later more pieces are being added to the disturbing profile of the accused shooter jared lee loughner. in a video he walks through his community college talking behind the cam roo. >> this is my genocide school where i'm going to be homeless because of the school. >> we are still trying to find out as much as we can about him. >> reporter: a long planned gun show went on as scheduled in tucson today but in this western city there has been no apparent backlash against firearms. in another twist in this story one of the shooting victims eric fuller who was hit in the leg was arrested at a town hall meeting organized by abc news after a discussion of gun

rights he held up his cell phone and told one of the other people at the meeting "you're dead." he was arrested, charged with intimidation and threats and committed. john blackstone, cbc news, tucson. gun advocates defending their right to bear arms at the cal palace. >> hold the trigger with this hand and... >> reporter: john kellyly enjoys a sport called cowboy action shooting. he says the tucson carnage is being used by gun control advocates to try to take away his guns. >> there there a whole bunch of people that do not like guns, do not think that anybody should own a gun and they want to take away guns from everybody. irregardless. and they are using it as an execution. >> reporter: on february 1st a new california law will require a thumb print, photo i.d,

address and birth date to buy bullets. members of congress are talking about such things as making it a federal crime to carry a gun within 1000 feet of a member of congress. mandatory background checks at gun shows. and banning the sale of gun clips or magazines that hold more than 10 rounds. >> i think it will make a difference. >> reporter: guns are part of the culture of southern arizona much the wounded congresswoman owns a glock, the same type of gun that was used to shoot her. since the shooting there has been a run on glocks in arizona. january 10th sales reportedly doubled those of a year ago. but those we talked with at the cal palace gun show say don't blame the gun. >> we believe in our 2nd amendment. we have rifles hanging inside the capitol so we believe in our second amendment right. it is a tragedy what happened in arizona. i think he was a crazy

individual but i think being a citizen in the united states we have a right to keep and bear guns. >> reporter: gun sales up 65% in ohio. 33% in new york and 16% here in california. bloomburg nurse citing fbi stats saying the 5% national boost in sales amounts to nearly 8000 guns. >> wow. all right. don, thank you very much. many public officials are evaluating the their own security after the shooting of gabrielle giffords. some politicians are struggling with balancing safety concerns. congressman mcne nary saying they may coordinate. >> i need to be able to reach out to the community and communicate with people. whether i agree with them or not or they agree with me or not. i need to hear from my constituents. anything that would make that more difficult is going to be a

problem. >> congressman mcnary said although he is concerned about his safety and safety of his staff he still wants people to feel comfortable in public meetings. mayor jean quan is rolling up her sleeves to help rid oakland of crime. today she led a block by block cleanup effort. quan hopes it will spark a renewed sense of pride in the community. >> it is a spirit of the citizens and residents of oakland that says we can make this the safest place in the country. >> reporter: right now it is far from it. this neighborhood has seen about a dozen shootings in just the past two weeks. >> at night we don't go out. we just stay at home. >> this neighborhood has been down awhile and it needed a cleaning up. >> reporter: and mayor quan says this will make it safer the broken window theory. >> neighborhoods where there is public abuse of facilities and

there is garbage that people think they don't care. >> save a life, don't take a life. >> reporter: a few blocks from the mayor a more global crowd. >> we are sick and tired of our young people dying in the streets. >> reporter: they do this every saturday and are glad to have the help. >> everybody who is out on the block right now telling the community we want to stop, we are all needed. >> reporter: but a few blocks from there skeptisism. >> things like this for show. the place is kind of clean maybe because you guys are here. >> reporter: curb sides like this one on walter street in east oakland have long been known as dumping grounds. people coming from the outside and dumping in their very own neighborhood. >> we have seen some condoms so i'm guessing at nighttime there is probably prostitution and nickel bags so drug selling going on. >> i believe this neighborhood would not be as bad as people think. >> reporter: in east oakland, cbs5. >> jean quan is among two of

the bay area's most prominent chinese american politicians who will be guests at the white house next week. quan and san francisco mayor ed lee have been invited to a state dinner honoring china's president. they have received international attention since being sworn in earlier this month. the dinner will be held on wednesday. it is the first sign that devastated neighborhood in san bruno is ready to rebuild. the pipeline explosion in september killed eight people and destroyed 38 homes. now the first of the residents has filed plans to rebuild. their home was on clairemont drive just feet from the source of the explosion. the city is fast tracking the permit process even waiving some of the fees to help the family break ground. one resident said you do your best healing at home and this is home. a progress report today on the recovery efforts for dozens of tenants of a burned out apartment building. the new year's day fire gutted

the building in san francisco. four dozen people were left without a home. the landlord said the power had been off and someone may have been using a candle. today mayor ed lee said all the tenants had been placed in temporary housing at a nearby hotel. >> they will be there for a little while. they are existing on red cross and city funded vouchers and we will extend those to the extent that we can to make sure that their temporary housing needs are met. >> reporter: the mayor said it is important that the building be rebuilt quickly because there is so little affordable housing available and he urged tenants to clear out their belongings to expedite settlements and the city to issue building permits quickly. they called it the miracle on the hudson and now the captain of flight 1549 has some new thoughts about what happened. two years ago today captain chesley sullenberger

successfully ditched his airplane into the hudson. he became a hero. the danville resident retired last week. in an interview on kcbs radio he said his gratitude for what happened has increased. >> for everyone on the airplane and their families i think we have gained a greater appreciation for what we were able to accomplish that day. for what happened that day and for what didn't happen that day we are all very grateful. >> he is writing a book about his experiences and has used his fame to lobby for airline safety and says he is still in touch with the crew and passengers of the fateful flight. one of the world's most popular websites is celebrating tonight. wikipedia turns 10. how the web encyclopedia founder plans to expands it to a billion users. they were answering complaints about a barking dog.

♪ oh, oh, oh wikipedia is celebrating its 10th birthday. the online free encyclopedia is based in san ogs fifth most popular website and today wikipedia is celebrating its fifth year. it is based in san francisco. it logs 450 million visitors every month. wick media is written by volunteers all around the world. anybody can edit most of the articles. at a birthday party in london the founder recalled how the company began and talked about his plans for the future. >> when i started wikipedia i was just basically a guy at

home in my pajamas like everybody else typing on the internet saying this seems like it could be fun, a cool idea. and people came. responded. and it grew and grew and grew. >> he hopes to attract a billion users through international expansion and diversifying the kind of people contributing especially women. they announced its first office outside of the u.s. will open in indiana. well, quite an ordeal for rescuers in southern california. animal control answered a call of a dog barking and what they found was a four-year-old puppy trapped inside a wall. it took rescuers to tear through the concrete to free him. it is not clear how long he had been trapped or how he got there. he was a little dehydrated and hungry but otherwise okay. his nickname? wally. well, more than 80 skiers are safely on the ground tonight after they spent hours stranded on a broken ski lift at an ohio resort.

the skiers were given blankets to keep them warm until they could be rescued. emergency crews used ropes to lower them to the ground and took hours to get the skiers to safety. luckily no one had any problems with hyopthermia. speaking of no problems. other than the fog, lawrence, a pretty day today? >> it was. pretty warm in some spots. santa rosa snuck to 70 degrees today. but that fog will be the real concern. seeing it right now over the golden gate bridge. down to a quarter mile visibility in concord. inside the bay into the delta into the strait. still, we will watch high pressure continue to sit overhead and that will keep at least the storm track to the north of the bay area. you can see some rainfall as you make your way into far northern california. just the far northern portions there and also up in oregon. looking at that dense fog early on. then giving way to sunshine as we head towards the afternoon. a little luck we will clear people out pretty nicely everywhere we go. temperatures up into the 50s

and 60s. bay area. chilly this spots. vallejo 45. 50s inside the bay and 44 in the napa valley. high pressure is in control for now. looks like it will sit here, folks, for quite awhile now. jet stream going to stay well to the north. that means we will stay high and dry now for the foreseeable future. some very mild temperatures all around the bay area especially in those places where you see that fog clear out. those temperatures going to be moving well into the 60s as we look toward tomorrow afternoon. fog will be the big story again for tomorrow. around the bay area. early on. 7:00 a.m. you've got a lot of fog early. especially in the north and east bay valleys and also into the bay. so we head toward the afternoon should begin to mix out and we will see a lot of sunshine showing up and temperatures not that bad. we will bring some numbers up well into the 60s by tomorrow afternoon in the santa clara valley. about 64 degrees in san jose. 65 in morgan hill and. coastline looking at a couple 50s. here is the tricky part of the

forecast. inland valleys if you clear out get the fog out thereof you'll see temperatures really pop. easily into the 60s. if it doesn't clear out like it didn't clear out very well in concord today temperatures in the upper 40s and low 50s. right now we are looking at hopefully clearing things out as we head in toward the afternoon. north bay also going to see those temperatures running up in the 50s and 60s by tomorrow afternoon. how about we go over the next couple days. we are going to see more fog and low clouds as we head towards the nighttime hours and early morning specially in parts of the north bay and east bay. those temperatures going to cool down i think as we head throughout the week but otherwise we are looking at some dry conditions through friday and saturday right on through the weekend. i think well beyond as high pressure is going to be out of the way. did you know we have a holiday. even though some people have to work. some do. yes, martin luther king holiday. if you've got the day off expert morning fog giving way to plenty of sunshine in the afternoon and temperatures not looking too bad. >> that's good. may as well be able to enjoy it. >> it will be dry. >> thank you, lawrence. politicians may have toned

down some of their language this weekend in the wake of that shooting in arizona but the business of politics still goes on and plans to chip away at president obama's signature health care law have renewed focus. >> we are a renewed and energized republican majority looking to do some great things this year. >> reporter: following a week of pause in washington, a regrouped gop is again focusing in on president obama's signature health care law. tuesday house republicans will introduce a measure to repeal it with a final vote shortly after. other priorities which include taking back the white house in 2012 fall on the new chairman of the republican national committee. >> how is everyone doing? >> the outspoken and controversial michael steele is out. in is a former party chair from wisconsin. he was voted to the post just as president obama was attending a memorial service for ambassador richard holgrel.

>> we received a tragic reminder we must never take our plug servants for granted. >> reporter: it was his second memorial in just three days capping off a somebber week in which the president led the nation in a call for calm. from monday's moment of silence to wednesday night's speech in arizona, the president pleaded for civil discourse. >> if this tragedy is prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let's make sure it is worthy of those we have lost. >> that was wit johnson reporting. president obama's state of the union address is coming up on january 25th and typically republicans and democrats sit on opposite sides of the house chamber during the speech but this time congressional leaders from both parties are proposing a mixed seating arrangement as another show of solidarity. turns out to be more of a problem than previously thought. what caused more than 100,000-

a sewage leak in december may have dumped a lot more raw sewage in lake tahoe that originally believed. the leak happened after a power outage at a sewer pump station during a storm. officials initially reported the lake was polluted by only a small amount of the estimated 61,000-gallons that seeped out of the manhole, but new reports show the discharge was closer to 150,000-gallons and a "significant amount reached the lake." depending on the outcome the north tahoe public utility district could be subject to a $10,000 fine. a popular 96-year-old tourist attraction that is the backdrop for many wedding parties is just like new again. san francisco's 96-year-old palace of fine arts has been restored to its former glory. sonja shin gives us a tour. transformation. there was a lot of overgrown vegetation and the building was falling into disrepair. and chunks of it falling down on people below. it is just beautiful now. >> they have done a terrific job. it really is -- it looks well. >> reporter: major repairs were done in the 1930st and again in the 1960s. a $21 million project for the new face lift. >> i encourage everyone in san francisco to come down and reexperience the palace. it has gone from a little bit of a shabby place to a spectacularly sparkling new, revived landmark. >> reporter: the restoration includes fresh paint, several seismic upgrades and even new walking paths. it was built to be part of the 1915 panama pacific international exposition. the palace of fine arts is located in the mannera -- it
