protesting around the world. >> reporter: a police van pushed protestors back in alexandria, egypt, but nothing has contained the anger spilling out all over the city. they lit vehicles on fire. attacked police stations. and rioted in the streets. >> they are doing this because they feel that this is their country. this is what they have to do. >> reporter: an army commander warned a crowd of thousands in cairo to stay inside once night fell. but many ignored the 4:00 p.m. curfew. >> reporter: the president swore in a vice president for the first time in 30 years. suggesting that the violent protesting may have made him revise success plans. he was urged to take steps before the new vice president was announced. hundreds of protestors gathered at the united nations saturday afternoon. one of more than a dozen

demonstrations across the u.s. >> the protestors say they came here to express solidarity with the people protesting on the streets in egypt and to call on the obama administration to take a tougher stand. >> should tell him to step down. obama, he should tell hosni mubarak to step down. >> reporter: more protestors gathered in boston. chicago. and washington. at the white house, president bush met with his national security team. the president reiterated the need for egypt to use restraint against the uprising. at the united nations, scott goldberg for cbc cbs news. >> several hundred people gathered at market and montgomery waving egyptian flags and chanting in english

and arabic against hosni mubarak. demonstrators calling for his resignation and said their rally had two other goals. >> one to show egyptian people there are people in the western world who are standing side by side with them. and two, to demand the united states and u.s. aid to egypt. >> 1.3 billion is given to security aid given to egypt for tear gas and weapons to keep egyptian demonstrators in line. for the third time in a week oakland police officers have shot and killed a suspect. the shooting happened this morning at a home in the 5500 block of taft avenue in the city's upscale rockridge district. don knapp on what police are saying about the incident. >> reporter: police shot and killed a man wielding what they call a replica assault weapon. one apparently not capable of firing a shot. the shooting came when police answered a call on taft avenue

between college and broadway. as they approached a home they saw a man. >> as they got upstairs, a gentleman, we have not confirmed his name yet, exited the home and confronted the officers armed with an automatic rifle. the officers immediately opened fire on the gentleman which ended his life. there were three officers involved in the shooting. we determined later on that the weapon was a replica assault weapon. >> reporter: while it may have been a difficult call for officers facing what they thought was an armed man, a visitor to the neighborhood saw it differently. >> it was a calm, quiet morning for the block to suddenly fill up with 10 police cars and policeman out on the sidewalk with shot guns pulled and raised pointed out in a residential neighborhood seems totally inappropriate. >> i don't like it.

it is very scary and very upsetting. i don't know. there are just too many criminals on the street is what it is. and police. >> reporter: it is the second oakland officer-involved fatal shooting in three days. they killed a man following a chase in east oakland. the police say the suspect ran from the car and showed two guns. last weekend a police officer with the oakland schools shot and killed 20-year-old rahim brown as he sat in a stolen vehicle. the schools say brown was shot as he stabbed at a police officer with a screwdriver. besides the trauma to the families of those directly involved and every neighborhood where violence happens the scar lingers for a long time. these girls won't soon forget what they saw. in oakland, don knapp, cbs5. investigators have ended their search of a missing 4-

year-old and his alleged kidnapper. they looked for juliani cardenas and jose rodriguez. two different sonars were sent in to help in the search. the boy's family says rodriguez snatched the child from his grandmother's arms in patterson 11 days ago. >> i'm fine, yes. i'm waiting for my grandson. >> i had to just keep waiting. a miracle has to happy because god is all mighty. >> they are pretty confident that there are no objects in there. no other cars or anything else. or bodies for that matter. >> investigators say they will turn their search to other parts of the san joaquin valley in san jose where rodriguez had family and friends. the body of a missing san rafael high school teacher has been found. 53-year-old debra schmitt disappeared ten days ago leaving behind a note on her classroom chalkboard that said thank you, everyone. today her body was found in a

creek bed. an autopsy will determine the cause of death. soggy and foggy. not the kind of saturday most of us wanted to see especially after such a sunny week. meteorologist lawrence karnow is here to tell us if things will clear up tomorrow. >> it is nice to have the rain back. winter for that matter and we would like to see the showers showing up and we have got more of that right now. and folks, it is coming down in parts of the bay area. taking a look in towards san jose. you've got pockets. modern amounts of racism. heading in towards sunnyvale and santa cruz mountains. another batch coming in over the peninsula. making its way onshore right now. the rain already beginning. watch out in pacifica. heavier band off the coastline. hayward getting hit by showers right now. more rain continues to fall across the rest of the bay area but this becoming more widely scattered. pretty good cell into this area right now. more widely scattered in this direction but looks like we will see pockets of this modern amounts of rain. even the possibility of some

they were hiking in northern iraq. iranian authorities say they crossed into iran illegally. a dog that was beaten, shot and left for dead got a joyful welcome home today. kevin got out of the house last month and was found near death on the side of the road. he ran up vet bills of $10,000. so many people wanted to help that his owners decided to hold a welcome home party and fund- raiser for him. >> you have a stranger come into your life and just really reek havoc and turn it upside down and then just to see the outpouring of support as the community, not even just here but in the entire country. >> kevin is still limping because he is still recovering from surgery but he is improving and he should be okay. any donations left over from his medical expenses will be donated to an animal shelter and s.p.c.a. a huge budget roadblock could cripple service. a proposal to prevent drastic

is about to declare another fiscal emergency for the third straight year. this time it is a record deficit of $30 million. one third of its operating budget. >> if they raise the prices and everything, and now they say they have no money. >> reporter: prices did rise january 1st. >> raising fares doesn't close a $30 million gap. >> welcome to caltrain. >> reporter: most of the budget comes from san francisco, san mateo and santa clara county agencies which are hemorrhaging money themselves. one solution, a new tax. >> convincing the electorate in three counties to say yes to a tax that's a very steep thought. >> even if you don't ride a bus or train you want to make sure the transit system works. >> reporter: there could be about 20,000 more vehicles a day on 280 and 101. more about the cuts and the public hearings to come. on the peninsula, cbs5. chuck read, san jose mayor, reached out to the community to

get input on the budget priorities for the fiscal year. members of neighborhood associations and youth commission were invited to give their suggestions at today's meeting. organizers used a board game to help those in attendance come up with possible solutions to the city's budget deficit. >> they are grappling with the same issues that the city officials have to gapple with except we have designed it as a collaborative gain. so the decisions made are not made solo they are made with the other players at a given table. >> suggestions from the game will be passed on to city officials. san jose faces a projected $110 million deficit in the general fund in the next fiscal year. local congresswoman won't let the recent tucson tragedy change how she holds public meetings. jackie spear met with people on the streets in san carlos in a congress on your corner meet and greet. she says the shooting at a similar event in arizona that left six dead and her colleague recovering from a gunshot wound

new spot every two hours so they don't leave kids unattended. lawrence in the rain. you want one of those permits? >> yes. i could use a permit like that. especially on a day like today. showers showing up. you've got to be careful on the roadways. we haven't had a whole lot of rain. sky still mostly cloudy all around the bay area. pockets of moderate amounts and heavier amounts of rainfall showing up as well. see how things are working out outside. more rain. pretty good cell. moving in that direction right now. you've got yellows and oranges showing up as well. moderate amounts of rainfall. kind of drying things out just a little bit in toward palo alto but more beginning to move in along the peninsula. here is that cell that moved onshore bringing heavier amounts of rainfall into pacifica sliding in toward half moon bay in the next few minutes here. hayward trying to dry out a bit. danville more showers coming in

your direction. and we have got this cell probably the most impressive one moving through right now that is bringing with it moderate amounts of rainfall. looks like it will be on and off throughout the night tonight. probably heavier amounts of rain coming as we head into early tomorrow morning. a cold front actually slid through the bay area early on and brought with it scattered light showers and sprinkles as we head into the afternoon. rain in the morning tomorrow but by the afternoon things drying out. we will see a little sunshine and skies should clear up but temperatures will stay fairly cool. numbers out there right now. we have got 40s and 50s with the scattered showers continuing at this hour. i think if you travel around the state plan on wet weather in towards the monterey bay area, fresno as well. the high country you're looking at more snow up there and haven't seen snow in quite awhile now. winter weather advisory going up to 4500 feet. be careful. expecting a foot of snow in higher peaks there. storm system finely break being down the ridge of high pressure -- finally breaking

down the ridge of high pressure. we will see rain and possibility of some isolated thunderstorms will continue tomorrow as well. as we head throughout the night tonight, midnight hours, scattered showers up to midnight. we will see heaviest amounts of rainfall outside. looks like a little bit wet to start with but if you sleep in you may miss most of this as we head towards the afternoon. things tapering off quite a bit and we will sneak in a little bit of sunshine. temperatures going to stay on the cool side. plan on highs mainly in the 50s all around the bay area. next couple days things settle down and wouldn't you know it we get one storm system and then they are all gone again. doesn't look like we have got any more rain in the forecast for probably the six, seven days after that, maybe even longer but then the long, long range we are talking about a pretty good series of systems coming towards the bay area as we head in towards the seconds week of february but that is still wait out there. so enjoy it. >> thank you, lawrence. >> you're welcome. well, she snapped thousands of beautiful pictures but she

annual flower fair. the event is the weekend befor the celebration of chinese newer kicked off today in san francisco's chinatown with its annual flower fair. the event is held the weekend before the lunar new year's so families can purchase their holiday plants, flowers and fruits, oranges and tangorins are symbol of abundant happiness. flowers symbolic of wealth. the fair runs from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. tomorrow. she had an amazing talent, thing is she kept it a secret. no one knew about it until a chance discovery after her death. we look at this one woman's eye opening snapshot. >> reporter: she was a very private person by all accounts. a nanny and house keeper but

her passion was taking pictures. with a camera dangling from her neck she took thousands of them. street scenes. intimate moments. anonymous portraits. pictures she apparently never shared with anyone. >> it was interesting. >> reporter: until john maloof accidentally stumbled on them. >> this is up in your attic? >> most of her personal belongings are up there. >> reporter: a few years ago, a real estate agent and flea market fan saw a box of negatives at a chicago auction house. >> her storage locker had delinquent payments. so what they do is auction the stuff off. >> reporter: he bid about $400 hoping to pick up some shots of the city for a book he was writing. what he found in the box has literally changed his life. >> i didn't know how big this would get. >> reporter: when he posted some of the pictures on a photography website, myer became an internet sensation. this month an exhibition of her work opened at the chicago

cultural center. but the picture of viviene herself is still developing. >> this is her audio cassette recorder. >> reporter: born in new york in 1926 to a french mother, myers' own tape recordings show her speaking with a slight french accident. >> well, i suppose nothing is meant to last forever. >> you can see myer on here. >> reporter: he traced her from a name on a film envelope to a 2009 obituary in the chicago papers. >> she was known for wearing these big floppy hats. >> are these her shoes? >> almost like mary popins. >> i met her in a diner as i recall. >> reporter: myer took this picture of the talk show host the day he hired her in the late 70s to care for his four sons. she worked for donohue for nearly a year. >> i remember i called her mrs. once and she said miss myer and i'm proud of it. >> reporter: in the late 80s this woman's husband hired her

to care for his disabled daughter. >> did she ever get a personal phone call? >> never. >> i don't think she had a friend. >> reporter: slee kept all these images to herself? >> mm-hmm. >> reporter: do you think she would appreciate them being made public? >> i think it would be a shame if they stayed in a dark closet because we just don't if she would like it or not. my mission is to put viviene in the history books. >> i like this picture. >> reporter: and joel mirowitz says she may well belong there. he is co-author of bystander, a history of street photography. >> she is not trying to charm anybody. she is ruthlessly honest and she should be taken seriously. >> reporter: he is still working his way through myers' negatives. he has 90 more he hasn't even seen. >> it is fair to say in many respects you don't know what you have yet. >> no. >> reporter: shot by shot we are finally coming to know the elusive viviene myer through
